Binance Labs Invests in GOMBLE

Web3 & Enterprise·May 02, 2023, 1:37 AM

Binance’s venture capital arm, Binance Labs, has made an investment in South Korean blockchain games developer, GOMBLE. Binance Labs is a division of the global crypto exchange entity that identifies, invests, and empowers viable blockchain entrepreneurs, startups and communities.

In a blog post published by the company late last month, Binance Labs outlined that it has participated in funding GOMBLE at a seed funding round stage. GOMBLE  is an affiliate of South Korea-based 111Percent, a casual mobile game publisher.

Sustainable blockchain gaming

For its part, GOMBLE’s objective is to enable the global casual gamer community to experience blockchain games through reward mechanisms that are sustainable. An additional focus for the project is advancing NFT interoperability, through the development of mobile-based blockchain.

The start-up plans to use the funding in order to develop and release its first mobile game, RumbyStars. Furthermore, it will continue to pursue a games-as-a-service (GaaS) model, with funding also being used to expand that GaaS-based platform.

While blockchain-based gaming had something of an initial breakthrough through the emergence of Axie Infinity, that success was secured with a focus on blockchain rather than gaming, attracting participation via a play-to-earn approach from those already focused primarily on blockchain. Subsequently, many have questioned the sustainability of this approach from the perspectives of gameplay and the tokenomics that support it.

A $25 billion market opportunity

GOMBLE is focusing on addressing these two factors through its approach. Casual games in the Web2 sphere have seen an uptick in popularity. The casual games sector has the potential to reach a $25 billion market volume within four years. Bringing that Web3 focus on enjoyable game play to Web3 gaming extends that opportunity to blockchain-based gaming.

Additionally, GOMBLE is working towards mistakes made with blockchain based gaming tokenomics in the past. It will focus on more balanced tokenomics using its $CRT token for governance. $CRT can be earned by players through a tournament prize system. From the other perspective, it can be spent on NFT purchases, tournament passes and in buying in-game items.

This is how Yi He, Head of Binance Labs interprets GOMBLE’s approach: “Blockchain gaming needs to move away from the concept of ‘earning’ to what truly captures the hearts of billions of gamers: entertaining gameplay. GOMBLE’s experienced team and focus on building engaging, social, and sustainable blockchain games with flexible governance offers a pathway for delivering the value of Web3 to existing casual gamers, thus welcoming new users to the BNB Chain ecosystem.”

RumbyStars

The blockchain gaming start-up is planning for a soft release of its first game, RumbyStars within SouthEast Asia in Q2, 2023. Following that limited regional launch, the project will then broaden the offering to North America, South America, East Asia and Europe.

Gomble’s CEO Jihoon Byun said that “Unlike existing blockchain games that focus on core games, GOMBLE aims to target the global market with easy and fun casual games that even non-gamers can enjoy. Starting with RumbyStars, GOMBLE is focused on building to provide users around the world with a pleasant experience and a greater diversity of games in the future.”

In order to execute on the roadmap the project has set out for itself, it will recruit more development and design manpower. Furthermore, investment will be made in infrastructure in order to enable real-time service.

Bitget Launches Crypto Loans Product

Bitget Launches Crypto Loans ProductBitget, the Seychelles-based platform known for its crypto derivatives and copy trading services, is venturing into the cryptocurrency loan market with the introduction of its Crypto Loans product. The move, which the company announced via a press release published on Tuesday, is aimed at attracting users who are seeking alternative funding solutions backed by digital assets, as an option beyond traditional credit institutions.Photo by Traxer on UnsplashDual coin approachThe Crypto Loans product employs a dual-coin approach, allowing users to stake one digital asset as collateral and borrow an equivalent amount in another asset. Bitget believes that crypto loans have been gaining popularity in recent years, with the overall digital lending sector surpassing $8.5 billion in 2022 and experiencing a compound annual growth rate of 20.5%, as reported by Global Market Insights.Despite the overall growth in the digital lending area, the crypto loan sector faced significant setbacks in 2022, particularly with the troubles surrounding centralized crypto lending services. Major firms like Celsius, BlockFi, and Voyager Digital suffered collapses and bankruptcy, raising concerns about the trustworthiness of such services in the future.Bitget, however, is confident in its Crypto Loans product, emphasizing that it has streamlined the loan process to ease user onboarding. The amount users can borrow is determined by the market value of the collateral staked, and the loan is automatically disbursed with a specific interest rate. Borrowers have the flexibility to utilize the funds as needed and adjust the collateral based on their requirements.Swift loans processIt also has the option to repay the loan before or at the predetermined deadline. To further encourage user adoption, Bitget promises support for withdrawals and a swift review process for loan applications. The feature is expected to provide added convenience and ease of use for users.Bitget’s Managing Director, Gracy Chen, highlighted the advantages of the Crypto Loans product, noting that users can now stake less-demanded coins and obtain loans in more liquid assets for investment purposes. The platform’s flexible borrowing and repayment mechanism is designed to accommodate the needs of all users, ensuring convenience and accessibility.Notably, Bitget has been expanding its presence in the crypto market. In March, the platform acquired a controlling stake in BitKeep, a crypto wallet that has been rebranded as Bitget Wallet. Additionally, Bitget unveiled a $100 million venture fund in April, following a $10 million investment from Dragonfly Capital. In May, it announced the launch of its Blockchain4Youth program, recognizing the importance of the younger demographic in achieving crypto mass adoption. As Bitget ventures into the crypto loan market, it’s aiming to go one further than previous crypto lending providers who have largely failed, to provide a secure and user-friendly platform for borrowing and lending digital assets. The success of the product will depend on user trust and confidence, especially given the setbacks experienced by those other players in the sector in the past. Nonetheless, with its growing user base and strategic investments, Bitget is certainly showing some potential relative to making a mark in the cryptocurrency loan market.

Potential positive impact of monetary stimulus in China

Many commentators in the crypto space were pointing to a lowering of interest rates last week by the Federal Reserve in the United States as being a positive development for the pricing of digital assets. However, the introduction of a stimulus package to revive the Chinese economy may also have a role to play. Stimulus packageBloomberg reported on Sept. 24 that People’s Bank of China Governor Pan Gongsheng had cut a key short-term interest rate. Furthermore, the Bank of China governor plans to implement a reduction in the reserve requirements that are applied to the country’s banks. The Reserve Requirement Ration (RRR) will be cut by 50 basis points, which will mean that $142 billion will be freed up for new lending.  Additionally, a package of measures has been introduced to rejuvenate China’s beleaguered real estate market, lowering the borrowing costs related to $5.3 trillion in mortgages.Photo by Eric Prouzet on UnsplashBullish for crypto?Jamie Coutts, chief crypto analyst at financial research platform Real Vision, took to X to comment on the development. Coutts wrote: “The bottom is in for global central bank liquidity for this cycle. Sit back and watch the other CBs fall into line. In a credit-based fiat fractional reserve system, debasement is a feature, not a bug.” Coutts signed off with a “Bitcoin” hashtag, with the inference that the development will have positive implications for Bitcoin. Similarly, market analysts at Singaporean crypto-asset trading firm QCP Capital perceive the move as being bullish for crypto and risk assets more generally. QCP Capital analysts stated: "We believe more easing is coming from the People's Bank of China (PBoC), and they have communicated as much, and combined with the U.S. Federal Reserve joining the global cutting cycle, all major central banks, except Bank of Japan, are now ready to inject more liquidity into the market. The macro space continues to look more and more bullish for risk assets, including crypto."  Taking that consideration further, the QCP Capital analysts suggest that market participants in the crypto space may be caught off guard by a resultant uptick in crypto pricing, stating: "We know how explosive crypto prices can be, and with so many bullish catalysts, we think the next move higher will leave many people surprised and sidelined.” Fed rate cutsMany market commentators were similarly enthused last week following an announcement in the U.S. by Jerome Powell, Federal Reserve Chairman, of a 50 basis point rate cut, with the suggestion that further cuts may be implemented going forward. However, not all market pundits are of the same view. Some believe that small interest rate cuts occurring in an overall high rates environment won’t move the needle and that it’s only in a zero rates environment where Bitcoin and crypto skyrocket.  Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX and Chief Investment Officer (CIO) at the Maelstrom Fund, asserted in his keynote speech at TOKEN2049 in Singapore last week that he wasn’t enthusiastic about rate cuts driving crypto.  “While I think a lot of people are looking forward to a rate cut, meaning that they think the stock market and other things are going to pump up the jam, I think the markets are going to collapse a few days after the Fed’s rates,” he stated. Markets didn’t collapse subsequently although it seems that they are responding to this latest monetary stimulus introduced by China.

Tokyo's Relic launches fan-driven anime project using NFT and blockchain

Relic, a Tokyo-based provider of business co-creation services, has launched a fan-driven short anime project using NFT and blockchain technology in collaboration with MetaMe, a metacommunication service developed by mobile carrier NTT Docomo.Photo by Dex Ezekiel on UnsplashFan empowerment through DAO and NFTsAccording to a press release on PR TIMES, the project, set to officially launch on June 19, 2025, aims to be accessible even to newcomers to NFTs or Web3. It will strive to ensure sustainability through transparent fund management and community-driven decision-making. The project introduces a new anime production model called "Anime DAO," starting with a near-future anime set in Neo Tokyo in 2050 that features characters and the world of the popular NFT collection "NEO TOKYO PUNKS." Funding will be raised through crowdfunding and the sale of celluloid art NFTs. Supporters will have the opportunity to vote on production decisions and own iconic scene NFTs once the anime is completed. The finished anime will premiere on MetaMe, followed by exclusive streaming on d-anime Store, while also integrating with the blockchain game GT6551, where fans can use anime characters and vehicles. This cross-media project combines anime, NFTs and e-sports, enhancing both fan engagement and user experience. Growing blockchain adoption in animeThis further demonstrates how the animation industry is embracing blockchain technology. In January, the Animecoin Foundation—whose early key contributors include Los Angeles-based NFT project Azuki—introduced the ANIME token on Ethereum and Arbitrum. Its tokenomics indicate a total supply of 10 billion tokens. The Foundation aims to connect the global anime fan base to blockchain, enabling creators to gain clearer insights into fan engagement and attribution, potentially unlocking new revenue models to support their intellectual property (IP). Although established in March 2024, the Animecoin Foundation traces its origins to Azuki’s mission of building an open anime universe. Azuki focuses on using blockchain technology and community involvement to develop decentralized anime IP and enrich the fan experience.  In a separate development, South Korea’s blockchain gaming platform WEMIX inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Japan’s Toei Animation late last year. Known for producing iconic titles such as Dragon Ball, One Piece and Slam Dunk, Toei Animation brings its storytelling and IP expertise, while WEMIX provides blockchain technology. The partnership aims to create an innovative blockchain-based gaming experience for a global audience.
