Metaverse gaming company Animoca Brands has recently announced a strategic partnership with Saakuru Labs, aiming to drive the adoption and integration of blockchain technology within Saakuru Labs' ecosystem. The collaboration is expected to bolster the expansion of the Web3 gaming industry, particularly in Southeast Asia, where the partnership officially kicks off. The initiative involves the incorporation of Web3 games developed with the Saakuru Protocol into the Animoca Brands ecosystem.

 

Gasless transactions

Animoca Brands will play a crucial role by providing gaming titles to its partners, while Saakuru Labs will facilitate Animoca Brands' expansion efforts in Southeast Asia. Developers stand to benefit from access to accelerated development processes and gasless transactions.

 

Gasless transactions are particularly significant in regions like Southeast Asia, known for lower-income demographics. The market has shown a keen interest in blockchain technology and Web3 games, indicating promising growth potential. The partnership between Saakuru Labs and Animoca Brands aligns with Saakuru Labs' recent collaboration with cloud computing infrastructure platform Aethir, aimed at enhancing blockchain gaming through GPU infrastructure. Notable partners of Animoca Brands, including GameGPT, W3GG and GameFi.org, have already expressed their commitment to adopting the gasless protocol.

It offered a total prize pool of KRW 150 million attracting 417 participants who made up 115 teams.However, although over two months have passed since then, the winners are yet to be paid their prize money. “Baobab Partners initially proposed the SWF2023 event, and they were responsible for gathering the necessary sponsorship funds to run the event,” said a city representative.According to industry sources on Monday, the company’s CEO, Choi Jin-beom, issued a handwritten apology last Friday regarding the incident. “We promised to pay the winners by today, but we were unable to deliver on that promise. We explored multiple avenues, including investors, new contractors, and other assets, but were ultimately unable to secure the funds to do so,” he said. “The narrative that the funds were diverted elsewhere or invested in cryptocurrencies or stocks is untrue,” he added, clarifying that related information was transparently disclosed to the city of Seoul.Baobab Partners’ swift rise raises industry eyebrowsBaobab Partners had previously participated as an event planner at last year’s Blockchain Week in Busan, which turned out to be a success. “We also spoke with the Busan city government, who gave a positive opinion of the company,” the representative added. It was under this context that Seoul entered into a naming rights agreement with Baobab Partners. The agreement stipulated that the company would be in charge of attracting and managing sponsorships, and the prize money and operational costs would be covered by corporate sponsorship funds.Nevertheless, questions have arisen within the industry about Baobab Partners’ short track record and its successive collaborations with public organizations. Baobab Partners is a startup that was founded in May 2021. In November of the same year, the firm signed memoranda of understanding with three blockchain companies during NFT Busan 2021, a large-scale NFT fair held in the southern port city to share the latest blockchain trends. As a result of its efforts, it was listed alongside prominent companies such as Coinone and Onther despite only six months passing since its establishment. Subsequently, Baobab Partners relocated from Seoul to Busan, and the following year, it participated as an event planner at Blockchain Week in Busan.Accumulating allegationsSpeculation suggests that this success was not solely due to Baobab Partners’s capabilities. The company’s CEO is believed to have political connections, according to an anonymous industry insider. Choi denied such claims and stressed that its technical expertise should not be downplayed, citing the fact that Baobab Partners was the first entity in Korea to develop virtual reality (VR) banking technology and had received a KRW 15 billion investment from Finger, a KOSDAQ-listed company.Baobab Partners has also been mired in controversy over supposedly unpaid wages. In response to a claim made by an industry source that many former employees of Baobab Partners have still not received their due wages, a Seoul representative stated that there is no such dispute according to conversations with company representatives, seeking to dispel the dispute. Choi further explained, “We didn’t have wage disputes until last year. The difficulty in paying wages began in January this year due to the failure to execute promised investment funds.”The city said that it is currently conducting legal examinations and looking into necessary measures for two matters involving Baobab Partners, including the handling of hackathon winnings.

Notably, the platform facilitates direct communication between Web3 wallet owners and allows them to conduct non-fungible token (NFT) and peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions.Incentivizing community engagementThe Beoble team explained that the ongoing beta test will be an opportunity to incorporate user feedback and improve services. It will also be a period during which users can receive rewards based on their chat room engagement.“The more active users are in the community, the higher their rewards. Rewards can be obtained through activities like completing quests, following others, reacting to messages and logging in,” the firm explained. It aims to reach users with 2G phones who were previously unable to access digital currency.Currently, this feature is only available for Android phone users with NFC functionality, as no details have been given for iOS users or 2G phone owners. This innovation is part of the central bank’s efforts to expand the reach and usage of its digital currency, especially for users with 2G phones who were previously unable to access it.Earlier this year, the PBoC launched a similar solution for smartphone users, using near-field communication (NFC) technology. However, the latest solution relies on hardware embedded in SIM cards, which can act as a “hard” (offline) central bank digital currency (CBDC) wallet.Partnership with telecoms giantsThe central bank’s partners relative to this particular project include major telecom operators China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom, as well as state-owned commercial banks Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and Bank of China, who have also introduced SIM card-based “hard wallet products.” These developments are expected to significantly improve the payment capabilities and network-free functionality of the digital yuan.To use this feature, citizens have to get a “super SIM card” from their carriers. After they have replaced their existing SIM cards and opened the digital yuan app on their phones, they will see an option to “open a SIM card hard wallet.” This will enable them to make touch-based payments to merchants even when their devices are powered off or lack network connectivity.SIM-based wallets are likely to be particularly useful for those using 2G devices or smartphones without NFC capabilities. Considering that about 20% of Chinese mobile users still use 2G phones, it would make sense for the PBoC to continue working in this direction with future updates.Driving adoptionThe ultimate plan of the PBoC regarding SIM-based wallets is not clear yet. However, recent developments, such as the pilot project in Qingdao where CBDC payments were tested on the metro system without electricity or network, indicate a strong push toward increasing the accessibility and adoption of the digital yuan.Frankly, moves to bring about adoption of the e-CNY have been nothing short of relentless. These measures have varied from paying state employees in e-CNY in Changshu, collaborating with French bank BNP Paribas so that its corporate clients start to use the digital yuan and enabling e-CNY bus fare payments on public transport in Jinan.China’s Jiangsu Province has integrated the digital yuan into its education system, while the resort city of Sanya recently introduced e-CNY ATM machines so that foreign tourists have a means through which they can access the digital currency. These developments demonstrate a clear commitment by the Chinese authorities in advancing the rollout of its central bank digital currency.
