Bithumb to Launch Entrepreneurship Support Program

South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb announced on Wednesday (local time) the launch of an entrepreneurship support program to commemorate its upcoming 10th anniversary. The initiative aims to discover and nurture promising young entrepreneurs with innovative ideas to grow the industry and drive business augmentation. It is divided into two parts: an entrepreneurship competition and an investment of KRW 30 billion (approximately $22 million) to support early-stage startups.

“It is time for us to support startups and bring them one step closer to success,” said the exchange’s CEO Lee Jae-won.

Program details

The entrepreneurship competition is open to individuals, groups, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) based in Korea that are planning to start a business or have been in operation for less than three years. Participants in any and all fields of business are eligible to enter. It offers startup grants of KRW 100 million ($74,000) for one first-place winner, KRW 70 million for three second-place winners, and KRW 30 million for six third-place winners. Winners will also receive investor relations (IR) consultations and marketing opportunities to attract future investments.

Meanwhile, the KRW 30 billion investment project is open to local startups in any field that have been in operation for less than three years. Evaluators will place emphasis on how innovative or profitable the businesses are deemed, Bithumb said.

“Our entrepreneurship support program is not limited to one-time support. We will strive to contribute to society by supporting entrepreneurship in various fields — not just the crypto industry — for sustained mutual growth,” Lee added.

 

Application process dates

The application period is from November 1 to 30, and the results of the first round of applications will be announced on January 4. Those who pass the first round will be called in for an on-site evaluation. The final pool of applicants chosen for participation and investment will be announced in February.

Bakkt takes stake in Japanese textile firm in pivot to crypto treasury strategy

Bakkt, an American digital asset custodian and trading firm, has acquired a stake in Marusho Hotta, a Japanese textile firm, as part of a new crypto treasury strategy which the company adopted recently. The firm, which was established in 2018 and is 55% owned by Intercontinental Exchange, the owner of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), published a statement on its website on Aug. 6, outlining that it had acquired a 30% stake in Marusho Hotta. The textile firm, a publicly-listed company on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE: 8105), is both a manufacturer and distributor of yarn and bedding, as well as Japanese and Western clothing.Photo by 🇸🇮 Janko Ferlič on Unsplash‘bitcoin.jp’As a result of the transaction, Bakkt International President Phillip Lord will become CEO of Marusho Hotta, and the company will be renamed as “bitcoin.jp.” Akshay Naheta, co-CEO of Bakkt, commented on the development, stating: "Japan's regulatory environment creates an ideal platform for a Bitcoin-centered growth business. We look forward to working with MHT's team to integrate Bitcoin into their operating and financial model and to establish MHT as a leading Bitcoin treasury company." Back in June, it emerged that Bakkt was working towards raising $1 billion from investors, providing the first indication that the firm was moving towards pursuing a crypto treasury strategy. A filing lodged with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) at the time stated:“We may acquire Bitcoin or other digital assets using excess cash, proceeds from future equity or debt financings, or other capital sources, subject to the limitation set forth in our Investment Policy.” The company went on to outline that the timing and magnitude of any such crypto purchases would depend upon market conditions at the time, capital market receptivity, the firm’s business performance and other strategic considerations. Given the credentials within traditional finance of the company’s owners, the arrival of Bakkt in 2018 was seen as a significant event within the crypto sector. However, the firm’s journey has not been an easy one. It started out by trying to appeal to retail users and bring about real-world use of cryptocurrency. It established an app and a partnership with Starbucks, which looked to bring crypto into mainstream use in terms of everyday payments.However, that partnership fizzled out and in 2024 a filing lodged by the company with the SEC revealed that the company’s position was challenging, with it warning that it “might not be able to continue as a going concern.” When the business first launched, it aspired to bring Bitcoin to 401(k) retirement accounts in the U.S. It may have been ahead of its time in that regard as it had to contend with Donald Trump’s first term as president when he wasn’t particularly pro-crypto and a distinctly anti-crypto Biden administration immediately afterwards. It is only now, seven years after the founding of Bakkt, that the current Trump administration is finally moving to allow crypto investment to form part of 401(k) plans. More recently the firm had concentrated on catering to the needs of institutional investors but faced further turmoil earlier this year when it lost two customers who allegedly made up 73% of Bakkt’s revenue.

Terraform Labs fails to halt class action lawsuitThe High Court in Singapore has dismissed an appeal filed by Terraform Labs and its co-founders, marking a significant step forward for the plaintiffs behind a class action initiated against the company.That’s according to a report published by Singaporean publication, the Business Times, on Thursday. The legal development follows the collapse of TerraUSD (UST) tokens in May of 2022, resulting in the loss of billions of dollars in market value. The collapse, in turn, has led to several lawsuits against Terraform, its founders and affiliated entities, with those court actions playing out in courtrooms in Singapore, South Korea, Montenegro and the United States.Photo by Wesley Tingey on UnsplashFraudulent misrepresentation allegedThe class-action suit, initiated in September 2022 by Julian Moreno Beltran and Douglas Gan on behalf of 375 others, alleges fraudulent misrepresentation by Terraform, Co-Founders Do Kwon and Nikolaos Alexandros Platias and the Luna Foundation Guard (LFG). The claimants argue that these misrepresentations induced them to purchase UST, stake the tokens and retain them as their value plummeted.UST had been designed to be pegged to the U.S. dollar with a 1:1 ratio. However, flaws in the tokenomics behind that digital asset meant that it faced a loss of confidence in May 2022, trading at around $0.05 when the court’s decision was released. The claimants collectively suffered losses of nearly $57 million.Terms of use cited in attempt to dismissTerraform attempted to have the lawsuit dismissed by invoking an arbitration clause in its website’s terms of use, asserting that users had waived their rights to a jury trial or participation in a class action. However, the Assistant Registrar (AR) rejected this application, stating that the defendants failed to establish an arbitration agreement.The AR highlighted that the terms of use were inconspicuous on the website, and there was insufficient effort to draw users’ attention to those clauses. Terraform, Kwon and associated entities appealed this decision, which was heard by Justice Hri Kumar Nair on Sept. 25.Despite establishing a prima facie case for an arbitration agreement, the court ruled that Terraform’s participation in the legal proceedings, including filing a defense and counterclaim, meant it could no longer seek a stay in favor of arbitration.Multiple actionsIt’s a busy time for all stakeholders relative to the Terraform collapse. Playing out within the same timeframe is a lawsuit in the United States taken by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) against Terraform and Do Kwon, where the SEC claims that crypto asset securities fraud has been carried out.The latest installments in that saga in recent weeks have seen both parties file to seek summary judgment. Last week, a court in New York approved the confidential treatment of specific documentation which had been produced by Jump Crypto, a division of proprietary trading firm Jump Trading.There are also criminal actions underway. In a South Korean court in October, Terraform Labs Co-Founder Daniel Shin denied wrongdoing in the Terra/Luna collapse. Meanwhile, a court in Montenegro has approved the extradition of Do Kwon, with a final decision to be made shortly as regards whether he should be extradited to the United States or South Korea.
