It is divided into two parts: an entrepreneurship competition and an investment of KRW 30 billion (approximately $22 million) to support early-stage startups.

Program details

The entrepreneurship competition is open to individuals, groups, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) based in Korea that are planning to start a business or have been in operation for less than three years. Participants in any and all fields of business are eligible to enter. It offers startup grants of KRW 100 million ($74,000) for one first-place winner, KRW 70 million for three second-place winners, and KRW 30 million for six third-place winners. Winners will also receive investor relations (IR) consultations and marketing opportunities to attract future investments.

Meanwhile, the KRW 30 billion investment project is open to local startups in any field that have been in operation for less than three years. Evaluators will place emphasis on how innovative or profitable the businesses are deemed, Bithumb said.

“Our entrepreneurship support program is not limited to one-time support. We will strive to contribute to society by supporting entrepreneurship in various fields — not just the crypto industry — for sustained mutual growth,” Lee added.

Application process dates

The application period is from November 1 to 30, and the results of the first round of applications will be announced on January 4. Those who pass the first round will be called in for an on-site evaluation. The final pool of applicants chosen for participation and investment will be announced in February.

JPMorgan Adopts Blockchain for 24/7 Interbank Transactions in India

JPMorgan Adopts Blockchain for 24/7 Interbank Transactions in IndiaAmerican multinational financial services company JPMorgan Chase has partnered with six major Indian banks to introduce a blockchain-based platform that leverages the technology’s benefits to address the restraints of traditional finance.Photo by Naveed Ahmed on UnsplashInterbank settlementThe collaboration aims to enable interbank settlement of US dollar transactions in India’s Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), positioning it as an alternative trading center to Singapore and Dubai. That’s according to a report from Bloomberg, published on Monday. The participating banks in this pioneering initiative include HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Yes Bank, IndusInd Bank, and JPMorgan’s own banking unit at GIFT City.Onyx blockchainThe blockchain project, utilizing JPMorgan’s Onyx platform, aims to expand the capacity of the existing settlement system. Kaustubh Kulkarni, JPMorgan’s senior country officer, stated that the platform will enable the participating banks to process instant transactions 24 hours a day, seven days a week. By leveraging blockchain technology, the interbank settlement process will become faster and more efficient, overcoming the current limitations of time and availability.Onyx blockchain was established in 2020 and serves as JPMorgan’s digital assets network. It was specifically designed with interbank settlement and wholesale payment transactions in mind.Reduced settlement timeUnder the prevailing interbank settlement system, transactions could take several hours to complete, and settlement is not available on weekends or public holidays. JPMorgan’s blockchain pilot, however, will remove these barriers, as Kulkarni explained: “By leveraging blockchain technology to facilitate transactions on a 24x7 basis, processing is instantaneous and enables GIFT City banks to support their own time-zone and operating hours.”This initiative not only addresses the operational challenges of interbank settlement but also serves New Delhi’s strategic goal of positioning GIFT City as a prominent alternative trading center. With the implementation of blockchain technology, GIFT City can provide a competitive advantage by offering efficient, real-time transaction capabilities. The success of Onyx is evident, as the bank reportedly processed nearly $700 billion in short-term loan transactions through the platform as of April 2023. The utilization of Onyx for the interbank dollar transfers in India further demonstrates JPMorgan’s commitment to exploring the potential of blockchain technology in the financial sector.Positioning for de-dollarizationAdditionally, JPMorgan’s involvement in this initiative aligns with the evolving landscape of global finance. The bank’s currency strategists have highlighted signs of emerging de-dollarization, with the US dollar’s share declining in foreign exchange reserves and exports. The adoption of blockchain technology for dollar transactions not only improves efficiency but also aligns with the changing dynamics of the global financial system. As JPMorgan launches the pilot project in collaboration with the Indian banks, the coming months will be crucial for analyzing the experiences and outcomes. This initiative marks a significant step towards streamlining financial operations, embracing innovative solutions, and strengthening India’s role in the adoption of blockchain technology within its financial infrastructure.

Forkast Labs streamlines operations following merger

Forkast Labs streamlines operations following mergerForkast Labs, a crypto media and data intelligence firm, has streamlined and consolidated its operations in the wake of a merger which was carried out earlier this year.CryptoSlam mergerIn January, Forkast News, a Web3 media publication which had been founded in Hong Kong, merged with United States-based blockchain analytics firm CryptoSlam. The merger led to the formation of a newly branded entity known as Forkast Labs — a “Web3-focused data intelligence and media platform.”Forkast Labs’ merger with CryptoSlam brought together their respective strengths, with CryptoSlam specializing in non-fungible token (NFT) data tracking since its establishment in 2018. In January 2022, CryptoSlam secured $9 million in funding, led by Animoca Brands. It is worth noting that Forkast.News is also a portfolio company of Animoca, with Yat Siu, the founder and executive chairman of Animoca, overseeing the merger process.Photo by Possessed Photography on UnsplashStrategic pivotThe tie-up aimed to create a synergy between data intelligence and media in the cryptocurrency space. According to a report by The Block on Friday, recent developments suggest a potential pivot away from traditional editorial operations. Citing a Forkast Labs internal memo that the publication claimed had been shared with it, the memo stated:“There will be an increased focus on the data side going forward, and the collective team will be focused on launching new data products.”With that change of direction, it’s understood that some editorial staff have been laid off. The internal company memo went on to state that “the majority of editorial operations have been incorporated into Forkast Labs as a result of the merger between Forkast and CryptoSlam earlier this year.”The original crypto news site Forkast.News was co-founded by former Bloomberg anchor Angie Lau and former McKinsey consultant Sarah Chang in Hong Kong in 2018. The company raised $1.7 million in a seed funding round in 2021. In the wake of the January merger, the company had expanded its offerings in subsequent months with the release of indices, including the Forkast 500 NFT Index. Additionally, a partnership with The Sandbox in June aimed to “index the metaverse.”Consolidation trendThe changes effected by Forkast News and subsequently Forkast Labs are very much in line with a recent trend evidenced relative to crypto media. The Block carried out a reorganization in March that saw the firm layoff 27 staff, accounting for around one-third of its workforce. Last month, the media outlet was sold to Singapore-based venture capital group, Foresight Ventures, with a valuation of $70 million.Another prominent crypto media platform, CoinDesk, carried out an editorial staff reduction in August. It was subsequently acquired last month by cryptocurrency exchange platform Bullish in an all-cash deal led by former New York Stock Exchange President Tom Farley. Bullish is also one of three bidders in the running to buy out failed crypto exchange FTX.The evolving dynamics in the crypto media sector underscore the industry’s adaptability and pursuit of new avenues. In this instance, it demonstrates the pursuit of a data-focused business proposition amid changing market demands.
