KuCoin Thailand moves to full platform launch

Seychelles-headquartered global crypto exchange KuCoin has announced the full launch of its affiliate in Thailand. KuCoin Thailand was first presented by KuCoin back in April. The affiliate company emerged through a rebranding of local digital asset exchange, ERX. The renamed entity continues to be operated by ERX Company Ltd., while benefiting as a KuCoin affiliate from its global market presence and global exchange infrastructure.Photo by Bradley Prentice on UnsplashERX platform users onboardedSince that initial announcement, the exchange has been operated by onboarding users on an invite-only basis. All of the original ERX platform users have been ported across to KuCoin Thailand. In a statement published to its website on June 13, KuCoin Thailand pointed out that it is moving on from that invite-only phase to fully launch the platform.  It asserted that the platform is fully licensed by Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and it has now proceeded to full launch with no further access restrictions. In tandem with the full public launch of the platform, the company indicated that it was running a special rewards initiative with a prize pool of one million Thai Baht ($30,845) and introducing a new brand mascot named “Kuku.” In a press release, KuCoin claimed that “this marks the first fully regulated local digital asset exchange under KuCoin's brand,” contributing towards the company’s goal “to build fast, secure, and user-friendly infrastructure for crypto users” globally. Strengthening KuCoin’s presence in Southeast AsiaKuCoin CEO BC Wong described the launch as “a significant milestone in [the company’s] global compliance journey.” He added: “From being the first global exchange to register with India's FIU to now launching the first local compliant platform in Thailand, this marks a significant step toward strengthening our presence in the fast-growing markets of South East Asia.” In discussion with Cointelegraph, the KuCoin CEO provided an insight into how the company is approaching global growth while focusing on local market considerations. He stated: “While KuCoin Global supports a wide range of products for international users, we plan to expand locally in line with regulations and market demand.” Wong confirmed that the newly branded entity facilitates crypto spot trading for its users, with Thai Baht-based on and off ramps. Regulator & police enforcementThailand’s SEC moved to block five cryptocurrency platforms from accessing investors resident in Thailand late last month. The exchanges, OKX, Bybit, CoinEx, XT.com and 1000X.Live, were deemed to have been offering their services in Thailand on an unlicensed and unauthorized basis. In addition to blocking access, criminal complaints have been filed against all five exchanges. Thai police have also been busy recently with crypto-related enforcement. Last month, a Vietnamese woman was arrested on the basis of her alleged involvement in a crypto-related scam that saw 2,600 victims lose a total of $300 million. On June 12, Bangkok-based news platform Khaosod English reported that a Chinese man had been arrested in connection with a $6 million Bitcoin fraud case.

Metaplanet aims for 10K Bitcoin stockpile

Metaplanet, a Japanese Bitcoin treasury company listed on the Tokyo stock exchange, is targeting a holding of 10,000 BTC in 2025.2025 targetTaking to the X social media platform on Jan. 5, the company’s CEO, Simon Gerovich, set out a number of objectives which the company will strive to reach in 2025. Among them is the objective to expand the company’s Bitcoin holdings to 10,000 BTC. Gerovich said that the expansion of the firm’s Bitcoin holding would be achieved “by utilizing the most accretive capital market tools available to us.” He followed up on Jan. 6 with an announcement that Metaplanet has completed its 12th series stock acquisition rights. Gerovich claimed that the successful completion of the stock issuance marked “a milestone in Metaplanet’s financing and Bitcoin acquisition strategy.” The 12th series stock issuance was first announced back in November, with a six-month exercise period opening on Dec. 17. Additionally, the company issued 4.5 billion yen ($28,562,451) and 5 billion yen ($31,736,057) in ordinary bonds, with a maturity date of June 2025. Other objectives the company has set out for 2025 include enhancing transparency and shareholder engagement through new initiatives. Furthermore, Metaplanet intends to leverage its partnerships to advance Bitcoin adoption in Japan and further afield. Gerovich said that Metaplanet will explore innovative opportunities to grow the firm’s impact in Japan and within the Bitcoin ecosystem.Photo by Vasilis Chatzopoulos on Unsplash2024 ‘transformational’The Metaplanet CEO claimed that 2024 had been “transformational” for the company. He added: “We broke records, expanded our Bitcoin treasury, and reinforced our position as Asia’s leading Bitcoin Treasury Company.” Shifting its attention to 2025, the firm is focused on its efforts to drive greater value for shareholders. Metaplanet’s fortunes are now heavily dependent upon the performance of Bitcoin. In an interview at a New Year’s Eve party held in Miami by Microstrategy founder Michael Saylor, Gerovich commented on Bitcoin adoption, stating:"I’m slowly but surely seeing Bitcoin becoming a topic of discussion at the highest levels of government. Corporations around the world are beginning to adopt it as a Bitcoin standard." The Metaplanet CEO is optimistic that the U.S. will adopt a strategic Bitcoin reserve once the Trump administration commences. Should that happen, he believes that other countries will follow. He sees Japan as one of those countries where they do look to the U.S. as a guide on such matters. “So I think if President Trump does adopt it as a strategic reserve, then Japan and many countries in Asia will do the same,” he stated. Metaplanet is understood to be pursuing a business model very similar to the one pioneered by Microstrategy in the United States. The company increased the rate at which it acquired Bitcoin in H2 2024. Metaplanet made its first Bitcoin purchase in April 2024. At that time, its stock was trading at $1.90. Just as the Bitcoin unit price surged, so too did Metaplanet stock, closing the year at $22.05 per share.

Artifact Labs Raises $3.25M

Artifact Labs Raises $3.25MArtifact Labs, a Hong Kong-based start-up company that concerns itself with Web3 and metaverse products from leading brands, has raised $3.25 million in a recent funding round.Photo by Pixabay on PexelsThe NFT-focused company, which was spun out of Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP) in 2022, has received funding from Blue Pool Capital and Animoca Ventures, with Blue Pool leading the funding round. Blue Pool Capital is the investment vehicle of Alibaba founders Jack Ma and Joe Tsai. The company was borne out of a decision taken by the SCMP in 2021 to launch an NFT standard called artifact, which was geared toward recording historical data. Its starting point in that endeavor was the sale of NFTs of its very own historical front pages. That included iconic historical snapshots such as the return of Hong Kong to the Chinese in 1997, the outbreak of avian flu, the onset of the Asian financial crisis and the death of the UK's Princess Diana in 1997.Expansion of operationsArtifact Labs has said that it intends to use the funding to expand company operations. Executing on that, the firm intends to fill multiple developer positions.Phillip Pon, CEO of Artifact Labs commented on the development via a press release:“It’s not about creating new IPs for speculation — for example NFT hype projects — it’s about driving new engagement with historically significant collections by using Web3. We want to carve new space in the younger public’s consciousness for historical brands and artifacts, while supporting these important organizations with new revenue streams to fund their preservation work, we are also solidifying immutable on-chain data preservation through NFTs.”It appears that the firm will release NFT collections on behalf of preservation organizations, while at the same time developing technology to assist institutions in preserving their archives on the blockchain.NFTs with inherent valueLast year, Artifact Labs Founder and former CEO of the SCMP, Gary Liu, said in an interview that NFTs need to contain a certain inherent value beyond just being endorsed by a number of people. Liu stated: “There has to be intrinsic value in the asset itself or the underlying asset that it represents. That’s what is going to drive NFT innovation.”That philosophy is borne out by one of Artifact’s recent collaborations. In February, the firm partnered with RMS Titanic, Inc, a company that’s dedicated to preserving the legacy of the infamous sunken ship. Central to the partnership was an intention to mint NFTs based upon over 5,500 artifacts that have been recovered from the sunken wreckage. In January Artifact Labs partnered with Dubai-based data intelligence and marketing technology firm, MEmob+. The objective of the firms in teaming up is to have the complete range of expertise necessary between them in order to offer brands and companies a strategic advisory service when it comes to delving into the metaverse. Artifact’s art platform Materia, will be harnessed by MEmob+ to assist brands who want to develop art projects in the metaverse.
