BitMEX Chalks Up Two New Perp Contract Listings

Web3 & Enterprise·May 08, 2023, 12:08 AM

Seychelles-based cryptocurrency exchange and derivative trading platform BitMEX announced recently that it has added perpetual contracts relative to two additional digital assets.

A perpetual contract is a crypto futures contract without an expiry date. Just like with a more conventional futures contract, a perpetual contract is a derivative product, deriving its value from the underlying crypto asset.

$SUI token

Taking to Twitter, the company outlined that it has added perpetual contracts for the $SUI token. The contracts will be available in $SUI/USD and SUI/USDT pairings. Leverage relative to the contracts is being made available up to a maximum of 50x.

$SUI is the native token of the Sui blockchain platform. Sui is a layer one blockchain which launched earlier this week. It’s a smart contract platform maintained via a network of permissionless validators. The blockchain network claims to offer a scalable network with ultra low latency. Such low latency can enable diverse use cases such as retail point of sale payment systems and gaming.

The contract allows users to post bitcoin as collateral, earning or losing in bitcoin as the SUI/USD rate changes. Maximum risk limit is set at 50 bitcoin. Meanwhile maker and taker fees have been set for the product at 0.02% and 0.075% respectively. A base initial margin of 2% applies while base maintenance margin of 1% applies.

$PEPE token

On Wednesday, BitMEX also launched perpetual contract products relative to the $PEPE token at 04:00 UTC. There are two listings, PEPE/USD and PEPE/USDT. Pepe coin is a meme token project, inspired by the Pepe the Frog meme. The origins of the cartoon character stem from the Boy’s Club comic in 2005. It later became an internet meme, and later still it was adopted as a meme within the crypto space.

The token itself was launched in April, sky rocketing to a $502 million market capitalization since then, representing a 2,100% rise in the token’s unit price since its launch.

As in the case of the $SUI token, $PEPE is also available to trade on BitMEX with leverage as high as 50x. In an interview with one crypto news publication, a representative of BitMEX commented on the launch as follows:

“PEPE needs a Perp! Perpetual Contracts are the most traded product in crypto and offer all investors taking a long or short position on tokens with better liquidity and fewer network risks. At BitMEX, we offer Tether-margined and Bitcoin-margined perpetual contracts. We are proud to be the inventor of the Perpetual Swap and have long been a leading trading venue for crypto derivatives, offering uncompromised security, a reliable platform, and deep liquidity — as professional traders deserve.”

Many commentators in the crypto space have repeatedly pointed to the high risks involved with leverage. In this instance 50x leverage is incredibly high risk, making the product suitable only for those traders that fully and thoroughly understand the risk that comes with such leveraged trading.

Kazakhstan Launches NPC With CBDC Implementation by 2025

Kazakhstan Launches NPC With CBDC Implementation by 2025Kazakhstan’s National Bank (NBK) has unveiled the National Payment Corporation (NPC), a dedicated entity responsible for spearheading the development and launch of the country’s central bank digital currency (CBDC), known as the digital tenge. In a press release published last Friday, the NBK set out that the launch of the NPC is effectively a restructuring of the Kazakhstan Center for Interbank Settlements. The new entity has been entrusted with overseeing the national payment system. This mandate includes overseeing critical functions like interbank clearing services, facilitating money transfers, and managing digital identification. However, the NPC’s central mission revolves around establishing a robust “digital financial infrastructure” with a primary focus on realizing the digital tenge.Photo by Uladzislau Petrushkevich on Unsplash2025 targeted launch dateThe journey toward the digital tenge began in February of this year, with an ambitious launch date set for 2025. Deputy Governor of the NBK, Berik Sholpankupov, initially articulated a vision centered on a “collaboration between traditional finance and DeFi,” aimed at significantly improving financial inclusion and strengthening international trade. As of now, the CBDC pilot in Kazakhstan has advanced to a controlled environment pilot phase involving actual consumers and merchants. One of the key partners in this venture is Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange. Binance is actively supporting the pilot through its technical solution, BNB Chain, marking a convergence between traditional financial institutions and the blockchain-based cryptocurrency sector.Kazakhstan’s pursuit of CBDCs aligns with a global trend as numerous countries worldwide explore the potential of CBDCs. An astounding 105 countries, representing a substantial 95% of the global gross domestic product (GDP), are currently exploring the concept, highlighting the collective recognition of the transformative potential of digital currencies in shaping the future of finance.Last week it emerged that the NBK had entered into a collaboration with the global financial messaging service SWIFT relative to the beta-testing of a CBDC.Attracting global exchangesIn a move that bolsters the development of crypto in the central Asian country, Binance launched a regulated digital asset platform in collaboration with the local Freedom Finance Bank. Around the same time, Bybit secured in-principle approval to trade within the country from the local regulator.Kazakhstan’s proactive stance toward cryptocurrency is also evident in its taxation policies. In 2022, the government collected approximately $7 million in tax payments from cryptocurrency mining entities following the implementation of revised regulations governing the fiscal responsibilities of cryptocurrency mining.Additionally, the government introduced legislation aimed at curbing excessive energy consumption by domestic crypto miners, instituting licensing requirements, and making minor adjustments to the taxation framework.Kazakhstan’s steps in establishing the National Payment Corporation and venturing into the realm of CBDCs reflect the country’s interest in embracing the digital era and staying at the forefront of financial innovation. As the industry looks on, Kazakhstan’s digital tenge project could serve as a model for others seeking to bridge the gap between traditional finance and the exciting possibilities of DeFi.

BSN Foundation launches in Singapore with five global members

BSN Foundation launches in Singapore with five global membersThe BSN Foundation, a Singapore-based organization dedicated to building global blockchain infrastructure, on Thursday officially announced its five founding members from different regions and sectors.Photo by Julien de Salaberry on UnsplashBroad representationThe founding members of the BSN Foundation include Blockdaemon, a leading institutional digital asset wallet provider; Zeeve, a Los Angeles-based blockchain infrastructure automation platform; TOKO, a Hong Kong-headquartered digital asset creation platform; GFT Technologies, a German tech firm specializing in financial services and Red Date Technology, a tech firm behind the BSN Spartan Network located in Hong Kong.Representatives from these entities gathered at the Pan Pacific Singapore on Thursday for a launch event. The BSN Foundation will act as the governing body of the BSN Spartan Network, a public infrastructure network based on open-source virtual data centers. The launch of the foundation marks a major milestone in the BSN’s global expansion and its vision to establish a decentralized public layer of the internet. In discussion with Cointelegraph, Tim Bailey, the Vice President of Global Business at Red Date Technology, stated:“The BSN Foundation launch is a vital step in our global expansion, demonstrating the international recognition and support for the BSN Spartan Network’s concept and goals.” He added:“These organizations bring expertise in areas like blockchain-as-a-service, asset tokenization, financial services, and consulting, highlighting the wide applicability and potential of the BSN Spartan Network.”Bailey emphasized that the BSN Spartan Network is designed to change the application and governance of public chain technology. “By focusing on non-cryptocurrency public chains and a decentralized governance model, we’re not just innovating in technology but also in how global collaborations can shape the future of IT infrastructure,” Bailey stated. BSN’s strategy is focused on creating a “more stable and accessible network” for businesses around the world, distancing itself from the volatility related to traditional cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.Chinese originsThe BSN Spartan Network, launched in September 2022, features a non-tradable token (NTT) issued on its default chain. Each of the network’s data centers is equipped with a single registered NTT wallet for managing and holding these tokens. NTTs can be acquired using fiat currency, selected stablecoins or through various incentive programs. The BSN Spartan Network, which originated in China as the “Blockchain-based Service Network” in early 2020, was developed with the backing of the Chinese government.“BSN was indeed originally initiated in China. However, the BSN Spartan Network, governed by the Singapore-based BSN Foundation, is distinct from the BSN Networks in mainland China,” Bailey stated. He highlighted that the BSN Spartan Network is constructed following global standards, is entirely open source and maintains independent operations from the BSN Networks present in mainland China.UDPN proof of conceptBSN, driven by Red Date Technology as its lead developer, had outlined plans to develop a universal digital payments network (UDPN) as early as 2021. That project continues to progress. Last month, it emerged that SC Ventures, the Singapore-based fintech investment subsidiary of British banking conglomerate Standard Chartered, had partnered with Deutsche Bank in a first proof of concept (POC) of the UDPN. That POC resulted in real-time transfers and swaps of synthetic USDC and EURS stablecoins between the two banks.

Hong Kong financial services platform plans spot Bitcoin ETF launch for Q1

Venture Smart Financial Holdings Ltd. (VSFG), a Hong Kong-based financial services company, is gearing up to initiate an exchange-traded fund (ETF) directly investing in bitcoin in the first quarter of this year.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashThat’s according to a report by Bloomberg on Friday. The move aligns with Hong Kong's strategic efforts to establish itself as a digital asset hub, and with that, the company plans to submit an application to the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) for ETF approval. Brian Chan, the group head of investment and product at VSFG, expressed optimism about the potential of this market, setting a goal of achieving $500 million in assets under management by the end of the year. Long-term objectiveWhile the firm has taken the decision to focus on spot crypto ETFs amid a backdrop of spot bitcoin ETF approval in the United States earlier this month, it’s an objective the firm has been working on for some time. In June of last year, crypto media reported that VSFG were planning the launch of such a product. Notwithstanding that intention, the recent launch of several high-profile bitcoin funds in the United States, including offerings from BlackRock and Fidelity Investments, will likely assist the company in getting product approval in Hong Kong. Immediately following U.S. approval, a Hong Kong lawmaker suggested that the Chinese autonomous territory should respond proactively. Johnny Ng outlined that Hong Kong had to respond to secure its global position in developing the digital assets space in Hong Kong. Positive soundingsTowards the end of December, there appeared to be positive soundings on the possibility of spot bitcoin ETF approval in Hong Kong emerging from the local regulator. SFC CEO Julia Leung stated that the regulator was open to the notion of retail participation in spot crypto ETF products. Her comment was followed shortly afterwards by a joint announcement from the SFC alongside the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) that they were prepared to accept applications for such funds. The approval process for such products typically takes weeks to months, following the precedent of traditional ETFs. Hong Kong presently permits futures-based crypto ETFs, with three already listed: CSOP Bitcoin Futures, CSOP Ether Futures and Samsung Bitcoin Futures. However, these funds have a combined asset value of around $50 million. Samsung Asset Management has not ruled out exploring the launch of a spot ETF, while CSOP Asset Management remains silent on the matter. VSFG is one of Hong Kong's first SFC-approved virtual asset managers, offering both traditional and digital wealth management services. Aegis Custody, a digital asset custodian, is in discussions with four asset managers about listing spot crypto products in Hong Kong. The regulatory requirements in the city may lead issuers to impose higher fees compared to the low management levies seen in many new U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs. Although bitcoin experienced substantial growth in anticipation of these U.S. products, it has seen a 10% decline since their trading commenced on Jan. 11. Nevertheless, many industry commentators expect a stronger bitcoin unit price in the medium to long term as a direct consequence of these products.
