KDAC, backed by Shinhan Bank, has been providing virtual asset custody services to businesses seeking safe asset management.

Collaboration plans between Fobl and KDAC

With the partnership, the two sides will store a portion of Fobl customers’ assets in custody, build a systematic process for custody of projects’ virtual assets and their pre-disclosures, and seek out new business opportunities in the Korean security token market.

Fobl’s potential transformation to fiat exchange

Previously, it was reported that Fobl is set to face a comprehensive inspection next week from the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) under the Korean Financial Services Commission (FSC).

This move from the FIU suggests that Fobl may soon become a fiat crypto exchange in the near future, as the financial regulator has announced that it will first inspect non-fiat exchanges that are preparing to allow fiat trading.

According to Animoca's executive chairman and co-founder Yat Siu, Bitcoin is now primed for Web3, transitioning from a mere store of value to a store of culture for the Web3 age. Six of Animoca Brands' portfolio companies have already joined as Genesis members, signaling a strong start for the Opal Protocol. Additionally, all future Bitcoin-based projects from Animoca Brands will collaborate with the Opal Foundation. Launched in 2024, the Opal protocol positions itself as a decentralized ecosystem protocol on Bitcoin, powered by BLIF. Its litepaper describes it as a seamless blend of virtual and real-life experiences, offering digital extensions of reality across various domains such as banking, entertainment, education and social interactions. The launch date of the Opal protocol and BLIF airdrop is yet to be announced, but Opal's Telegram group has hinted at its impending arrival. Despite not being operational, Opal's X profile already boasts over 270,000 subscribers. Strategic partnershipAnimoca Brands is hailed as the first strategic launch partner for the Opal Foundation. The company's collaboration aims to integrate its vision into the open Opal protocol on Bitcoin and ordinals. Animoca's venture into Bitcoin coincides with the recent trading debut of spot Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded funds (ETF) in Hong Kong. However, the initial trading volumes of these ETFs were relatively modest compared to spot Bitcoin ETFs launched in the United States in January 2024.

Korean Financial Watchdog: Investor Protection Boosts Crypto Market

Korean Financial Watchdog: Investor Protection Boosts Crypto MarketLee Bok-hyun, Governor of the South Korean Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), addressed the issue of investor protection measures in the cryptocurrency market during his speech at the fourth Blockchain Leaders’ Club in Seoul. According to a report by local news agency News1, Governor Lee emphasized that these measures would not hinder the market but instead establish a positive cycle by increasing market confidence and driving industry growth.Photo by Joshua Miranda on PexelsCrypto user protectionTo underscore the importance of safeguarding users in the crypto industry, Governor Lee referred to recent incidents such as the collapse of stablecoin Terra and the failures of Silvergate and Silicon Valley Bank. He highlighted how these examples demonstrate the need for protective measures as the influence of the crypto market extends beyond the financial sector and impacts the real economy.Governor Lee further emphasized the FSS’s commitment to maintaining ongoing communication with the crypto industry and adapting the regulatory system to accommodate the changing landscape. He stated that the FSS would assist the industry in establishing its own self-regulatory system, which includes monitoring suspicious transactions and transparent procedures for virtual asset listing. Additionally, the FSS plans to collaborate with industry insiders to prevent misunderstandings when formulating relevant rules and regulations.Governor Lee also touched on the Virtual Asset User Protection Bill, stating that he expects to see the final draft this summer as it is currently undergoing a legislative process in the National Assembly. He highlighted the government’s commitment to improving market order and minimizing investor losses before the law’s implementation. The government is taking a “same risks, same regulation” approach to prevent regulatory arbitrage and establish effective monitoring systems for virtual asset transactions and on-chain data.Unfamiliar but importantMeanwhile, Lee Yong-woo, a member of the opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), echoed the importance of establishing and improving a regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency industry. He drew parallels between the current situation and the dot-com bubble era, emphasizing the significance of not disregarding the potential of the crypto market due to unfamiliarity.Communication channelLawmaker Lee expressed hope that the Blockchain Leaders’ Club would contribute to shaping a stable crypto market by providing opportunities to listen to the opinions of market participants, which can then be reflected in managing and revising laws and regulations.Today’s event, hosted by News1, saw the gathering of lawmakers, government officials, crypto industry leaders, and academics. Among the participants were People Power Party Lawmaker Yun Chang-hyun, the top executives of the five major Korean crypto exchanges (Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit, and Gopax), and the CEO of blockchain gaming company Wemade.

South Korean crypto exchanges list USDT

South Korean crypto exchanges list USDTBithumb and Coinone, two of South Korea’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, have recently listed Tether (USDT) — the USD-pegged stablecoin issued by Tether Limited — according to an article by local news outlet Kyunghyang Games on Thursday (local time). Both exchanges support Tether trading on the TRON network.Photo by DrawKit Illustrations on UnsplashTether gains momentum in South KoreaBithumb listed the currency today at KRW 1,316 in response to high investor demand. Meanwhile, Coinone, which listed Tether on Nov. 30 to become the first fiat-to-crypto exchange in the country to facilitate USDT/KRW trading, cited reasons such as Tether’s reliability and transparency, demonstrated by regular updates on its audits and reserves. The listing price was KRW 1,289.Industry sources anticipate that USDT/KRW trading in South Korea will eventually lead to reduced transaction fees and a simplified transaction process for domestic traders. Previously, in order to access most overseas markets where USDT is used as the default currency, users have had to sell their assets overseas first and then repurchase USDT to participate in trading.Simplified transactions are also expected to contribute to balancing pricing across different markets and reducing the Kimchi premium — a term used to describe the difference between trading prices of cryptocurrencies in Korea and in other foreign exchanges.Promotional eventsTo mark the occasion, Bithumb is offering a promotional event where 0.02% of the price of maker orders placed by Dec. 11 will be distributed to users in Bitcoin on Dec. 14. Maker orders are those that are placed at an asking price that differs from the current price, which means it is added to the order book instead of being matched or executed immediately. These orders add liquidity to an order book.Bithumb users can also make USDT withdrawals free of extra fees until Dec. 11. Coinone, on the other hand, requires a withdrawal fee of 1 USDT.According to CoinMarketCap, Tether has the third-largest market capitalization at approximately $90.1 billion as of this writing. The token’s trading volume in the last 24 hours was $49.3 billion.
