Bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrency, exceeded the KRW 60 million (approximately $45,700) mark in the South Korean market on Wednesday (local time), reaching its highest value of the year.

So far today, the nation’s leading crypto exchange, Upbit, saw Bitcoin’s price soaring to a daily peak of KRW 60,642,000. Meanwhile, another major trading platform, Bithumb, observed Bitcoin’s value touching a daily high of KRW 60,775,000.

Highest since November 2021

This is the first time Bitcoin went above the KRW 60 million mark since November 2021. Amid this development, the Kimchi premium, a term indicating the gap in crypto prices between Korean exchanges and their foreign counterparts, has exceeded 4%. According to data from crypto information platform CoinNess, at the time of publication, the average price of Bitcoin on Korean platforms is KRW 59,986,250, while the average price of Bitcoin on foreign platforms is KRW 57,605,406.

Ethereum prices are also on the rise. On Upbit, Ethereum reached its highest point of the day at KRW 3,163,000, and on Bithumb, it peaked at KRW 3,162,000.

Rate hike halt and Bitcoin halving

The ongoing surge in Bitcoin’s value is widely believed to be influenced by a halt in global interest rate hikes and the anticipated Bitcoin halving event scheduled for April 2024. Additionally, the potential approval of spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is seen as another significant factor contributing to the rise in the digital currency’s prices.

Meanwhile, the Crypto Fear and Greed Index from software comparison platform Alternative.me currently indicates a sentiment of “Greed” with a score of 72. This index assesses various factors, including volatility, market momentum and volume, social media buzz, market dominance and trends. The scale ranges from 0 to 100, where 0 signifies “Extreme Fear” and 100 represents “Extreme Greed.” Scores nearer to 0 suggest increasing fear among investors, potentially signaling a buying opportunity. On the other hand, scores approaching 100 imply growing greed, hinting at the possibility of a market correction.

Korean won as the top fiat trading pair

During this latest Bitcoin rally, where the cryptocurrency climbed to over 50% of its highest price in almost two years, South Korean crypto traders have played a significant role, Bloomberg reported, citing data from CCData. In November, the South Korean won exceeded the U.S. dollar as the top fiat trading pair in the crypto market for the first time.

Hong Kong Authorities Unite to Form Crypto-Centric Taskforce

Hong Kong Authorities Unite to Form Crypto-Centric TaskforceAuthorities in Hong Kong are taking action to address recent mounting concerns surrounding illicit cryptocurrency activities, particularly in light of the recent JPEX scandal. The Hong Kong Police Force and the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) have come together to establish a specialized working group dedicated to closely monitoring and countering suspicious activities connected to virtual asset trading platforms (VATPs).In a statement published by Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) on Wednesday (local time), the agency set out details of a collaborative task force which has been formed in the wake of a high-level meeting held on September 28.The collaboration draws on input from the SFC as well as a number of law enforcement divisions within the Chinese autonomous territory, including the Commercial Crime Bureau, Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau, and Financial Intelligence and Investigations Bureau.Photo by Cheung Yin on UnsplashGreater coordination and information sharingThe primary objectives of this alliance are to enhance coordination, foster information sharing, assess risks tied to VATPs, and, above all, safeguard the interests of the Hong Kong public.Christopher Wilson, Director of Enforcement at the SFC, underscored the regulator’s commitment to allocating resources to combat problematic VATPs and safeguard investor interests. Eve Chung, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) at the Hong Kong Police Force, emphasized the significance of intelligence exchange and collaborative efforts in responding to the challenges posed by VATPs to protect the Hong Kong public.Knee jerk response to JPEX scandalIt would appear that the necessity for such a concerted effort became patently clear as a direct response to the errant activities of Dubai-based crypto platform JPEX within Hong Kong.Issues with the exchange first emerged in September when the platform outlined that it was having liquidity issues as a consequence of some third party market makers having withdrawn their services. JPEX subsequently raised withdrawal fees to an unreasonable level to deter customers from withdrawing funds from the platform. The saga has affected over 1,600 investors with more than $150 million in assets becoming unavailable to them. The case resulted in the arrest of at least 20 individuals, with local telecom providers blocking online access to the platform as requested by law enforcement.Earlier, on September 13, the SFC had issued a warning accusing JPEX and crypto influencers of disseminating false or misleading information on social media about their application for a virtual asset trading license in Hong Kong. The ongoing JPEX controversy has prompted regulators in Hong Kong to explore measures to strengthen regulations governing the cryptocurrency market. The establishment of the task force signifies a proactive stance to address these concerns and ensure swift, effective action against illicit activities in the crypto sector. In addition to the joint task force, the SFC has taken steps to enhance transparency by publishing a comprehensive list that includes licensed, deemed licensed, closing down, and application-pending crypto exchanges, along with a list of “suspicious VATPs.” This transparency initiative aims to provide clarity and protect investors by offering insights into legitimate and questionable cryptocurrency trading platforms operating in Hong Kong.

Solomon Islands partners with Soramitsu on CBDC pilot

Solomon Islands partners with Soramitsu on CBDC pilotCentral bank digital currency (CBDC) development has been ongoing globally at a brisk pace in 2023 and smaller nations, like the Solomon Islands with a population of over 700,000, are no exception when it comes to that process with the introduction of Bokolo Cash.Photo by Gilly Tanabose on UnsplashIntroducing Bokolo CashSolomon Islands Central Bank (CBSI) has officially unveiled the proof-of-concept for its CBDC named Bokolo Cash, with support from Japanese blockchain firm Soramitsu. Bokolo Cash is pegged to the value of one Solomon Islands dollar. The proof-of-concept pilot was launched on Tuesday by way of a keynote speech given by Manasseh Sogavare, the prime minister of the archipelago. In that speech, Sogavare highlighted that the CBDC would lead to reduced transaction costs for citizens and businesses. Users can rely on transactions to be both secure and transparent, given that the network will be blockchain-based.The prime minister also articulated that the CBDC pilot project would be a catalyst for financial inclusion relative to the Island nation’s remotest communities.Pilot scheme use casesParticipants in the project will have the opportunity to use it in various scenarios. From retail transactions in the capital city, Honiara, to person-to-person transfers, the CBDC aims to demonstrate its versatility. The proof-of-concept will also assess wholesale transfers between commercial banks, simulate cross-border payments and examine remittances. To ensure security and compliance, users will undergo a “two-step” Know Your Customer (KYC) verification process, as outlined by Soramitsu.Operating on a customized blockchain based on Hyperledger’s Iroha, Bokolo Cash is designed for local use. However, it will also integrate with Soramitsu’s public Sora blockchain. This connectivity will enable users to engage in transfers using QR codes and the self-custody Fearless Wallet, a creation of Soramitsu.Legislative changeAlthough the project commenced at the beginning of November, the official announcement was made earlier this week. The legislation required to enable the CBSI to issue the CBDC — CBSI (Amendment) Act 2023 — was enacted on Nov. 3.The Solomon Islands, a collection of over 900 islands situated west of Papua New Guinea, now joins a group of island nations, including the Marshall Islands and Mauritius, actively experimenting with CBDC. Palau collaborated with Ripple Labs back in July to introduce the Palau Stablecoin (PSC). Interestingly, Tonga has contemplated adopting Bitcoin as legal tender, while Vanuatu hosts Satoshi Island, known for its Bitcoin-friendly environment. Meanwhile, Eastern Caribbean countries have already implemented an official CBDC called DCash.Soramitsu has been active in collaborating with central banks relative to the introduction of CBDCs, particularly in Asia. It has played a key role in facilitating the issuance of the Cambodian Bakong and the Lao DLak in Laos. Furthermore, it has initiated a project for regional cross-border payments using the Bakong and a stablecoin. In 2022, Soramitsu completed CBDC-related feasibility studies in conjunction with the relevant authorities in Vietnam and the Philippines. The Japanese fintech company has also participated with the Asian Development Bank and Tokyo-based global information technology solutions firm Fujitsu on a Web3 development project.
