OKX Ventures broadens portfolio to include Orbiter Finance

Web3 & Enterprise·January 30, 2024, 2:27 AM

OKX Ventures, the investment arm of the well-known crypto exchange and Web3 technology company OKX, has recently disclosed a strategic investment in Singapore’s Orbiter Finance.

Developing ZK-proof technology

The investment marks a significant step forward in advancing the evolution of blockchain infrastructure, given that Orbiter Finance has achieved recognition for its innovation in the process of developing its zero-knowledge (ZK) technology-based omni-chain rollup on the Ethereum network.

This initiative goes beyond Orbiter Finance's initial role as an asset cross-rollup bridge. Over the last two years, Orbiter has processed over 12 million transactions with a total transaction volume surpassing $7.8 billion. The protocol has amassed a user base of over three million and cultivated a community exceeding 700,000 users and enthusiasts.

Orbiter Rollup announcement

According to a series of posts on the X social media platform over the course of the weekend, the project is gearing up to launch a ZK-tech-based instant omni-chain rollup on Ethereum. A standout feature of the protocol is the integration of ZK Simplified Payment Verification (SPV) to authenticate Layer 2 transactions on the mainnet and combat fraudulent re-layers via the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).

This development introduces a secure, efficient, low-cost and rapid communication mechanism for Ethereum, with the added security benefits of ZK-SPV enabling Orbiter Finance to grant complete access to the "Maker" role. This marks a significant milestone in achieving decentralization within blockchain infrastructure.

Dora Yue, founder of OKX Ventures, expressed enthusiasm about spearheading the strategic investment in Orbiter Finance. She highlighted the protocol's ability to overcome traditional bridge limitations, specifically in terms of speed, and its crucial role in enhancing the efficiency of cross-chaining between various Layer 2s and the Ethereum mainnet.

Other investors in the project include Redpoint China, Hash Global and Skyland Ventures.

Supporting 19 networks

Currently supporting over 19 Layer 2 rollups and a multitude of native Ethereum assets, Orbiter Finance is positioning itself as a vital infrastructure component for the Layer 2 ecosystem. Yue commended the team's ongoing commitment to product upgrades and their dedication to ensuring a more decentralized and trustless foundation for the Layer 2 ecosystem's growth in 2024.

With an initial capital commitment of $100 million, OKX Ventures is focused on exploring and supporting the best global blockchain projects, fostering cutting-edge technology innovation, and investing in projects that provide long-term structural value. The venture aims to nurture innovative companies by offering global resources and leveraging historical experience in the blockchain industry.

Orbiter Finance also maintains an openness to incorporating additional networks. It has established strategic partnerships with key players such as Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, Linea, zkSync, Base, Starknet, Scroll, Manta Network and others. In this manner, it has solidified its position in the ecosystem.

Notably, the protocol announced a collaborative strategic partnership with Ingonyama earlier this month, taking a step forward in advancing ZKP acceleration. Ingonyama is a next-generation semiconductor company specializing in ZK-proof technology. With that, it is actively exploring the integration of ICICLE, a GPU library for zero-knowledge acceleration, into Orbiter's ZKP system through multiple meetings and code-sharing initiatives.

Malaysian regulator seeks feedback on crypto framework enhancements

The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC), the statutory body tasked with regulating and developing capital markets within the Southeast Asian nation, has published a consultation paper in an effort to garner public feedback on potential enhancements to its crypto regulatory framework. In a press release published to its website on June 30, the SC claimed that its proposals seek “to enhance competitiveness of Malaysia’s regulated digital asset market, improve investor protection and strengthen the resilience and integrity of [Digital Asset Exchange] operators.”Photo by Vlad Shapochnikov on UnsplashEasing listing requirementsIn the event that the proposals are adopted, one key change would see a liberalization of the listing requirements for digital assets. Where certain key eligibility criteria have been met, the regulator would allow the listing of digital assets on digital asset exchanges without prior SC approval. The regulator stated that it wants to make this change in order to speed up the time taken to get digital assets to market as they emerge. By setting out additional criteria, there will be greater exchange operator accountability. Exchange operators would bear responsibility for listing tokens in compliance with the requirements set out by the regulator.  Assets could only be listed once those assets and the underlying protocol and network had undergone security audits which had been carried out by an independent and qualified blockchain security auditor, with the audit results made public.  For the purposes of the “Liberalised Listing Framework,” the asset must have been trading on a Financial Action Task Force (FATF)-compliant virtual asset service provider (VASP) platform for a minimum of one year. The regulator believes that easing the listing requirements will result in a broader digital asset product offering being made available in Malaysia. Last month, Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) started a public consultation process aimed at revising token listing rules. Coin listing processes have also come under scrutiny from the authorities in South Korea recently. Segregating client assetsAmong the proposals is a plan to oblige exchange platforms to properly segregate client assets from operational funds and assets held by the exchange business. In recent years, many failed crypto exchange platforms, most notably FTX, got into difficulty by co-mingling customer funds with operational funds. Furthermore, the regulator doesn’t want any cross-over of assets between the local exchange operator and any overseas affiliate companies it may have. The SC stated that it is cognizant of recent global exchange failures, which has led it towards further enhancing crypto exchange operational governance and controls. It suggests that only 10% of client assets should be held by a Malaysian exchange in hot wallets, with the remaining 90% held in cold or offline wallets. The SC said that it welcomes feedback from members of the various stakeholder groups on the proposals outlined. The public consultation period runs from June 30 through Aug. 11.  Malaysia is expected to have 4.74 million crypto users by 2026. That would equate to 13% of Malaysians using crypto by then.

Binance Japan now fully operational

Binance Japan now fully operationalGlobal cryptocurrency exchange Binance has officially commenced full operations in Japan through its locally incorporated Japanese entity, Binance Japan.Photo by Sora Sagano on UnsplashSetting off on a compliant footingFollowing a period of collaboration with regulatory authorities, Binance Japan is positioning itself firmly under the purview of clear regulatory frameworks set by the Japanese authorities. The Japanese government has instituted stringent regulations for cryptocurrency exchanges, aiming to bolster consumer protection, thwart money laundering and create a more secure trading environment. Binance Japan’s decision to align itself with these regulations comes in a year in which the leading crypto platform has encountered regulatory pushback in a whole host of jurisdictions around the world.Under the established regulatory framework, cryptocurrency exchanges in Japan are mandated to secure a license from the Financial Services Agency (FSA), the nation’s financial regulatory body. This licensing process ensures that exchanges adhere to rigorous security measures, maintain robust internal controls and implement protocols for the protection of customers.Phased market entryIt emerged back in May that the company planned to establish a separate Japanese entity. In August Binance Japan started to offer a limited service, enabling access to 34 token listings. In November the firm added 13 further digital assets, with the suggestion that it would eventually offer 100 tradable digital assets.Taking to the X social media platform on Sunday, Sota Watanabe, the founder of Polkadot-centric multichain dApp hub Astar Network and the CEO of Singapore-based Startale Labs, confirmed that Binance Japan is now in full operation. Watanabe wrote:”Binance Japan started its full operation yesterday under clear regulations set by the government, and they have listed Astar from day 1 as one of the first cryptos. I hope more and more Japanese people enter our ecosystem.”Focus on stablecoinsIn a virtual business discussion at the end of August, Head of Binance Japan, Takeshi Chino, set out the company’s vision going forward. Part of the business plans includes potential collaborations on the development of stablecoins. Further news on that pursuit became known the following month when Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation (MUTB), the trust arm of Japan’s largest bank, announced a collaboration with Binance Japan that will investigate the issuance of public blockchain stablecoins denominated in the local currency, the Japanese yen, as well as other fiat currencies. The full launch of Binance Japan signifies the increasing recognition of cryptocurrencies as a legitimate financial asset class. With a major global exchange like Binance willingly adhering to local regulations, it sets a positive precedent for other exchanges and entities in the region to follow suit.Furthermore, given Japan’s historical significance in the global cryptocurrency market, Binance’s operations in the country could contribute significantly to the broader acceptance and integration of cryptocurrencies into the financial ecosystem. This move aligns with the global trend of heightened institutional interest in digital assets.Binance Japan’s initiation of full operations within a clear regulatory framework marks a further stride forward for both the exchange and the Asian crypto market.
