Web3 & Enterprise·May 03, 2024, 7:41 AM

Hong Kong-based game software company Animoca Brands has announced its foray into the Bitcoin industry by endorsing the Opal Foundation, a novel Bitcoin ecosystem protocol. The move involves the Opal Protocol and BLIF token, initiated by Animoca Brands and Darewise, a metaverse technology platform.

On April 30, Animoca Brands disclosed its plans to become the "largest Web3 ecosystem" for gaming, education and culture built on Bitcoin. The company aims to establish the Opal Protocol and BLIF token as key components of this ecosystem.

BLIF token and Opal Protocol

The BLIF token, also known as the Opal Protocol Runes token, is hailed by Animoca as a means to enable a "true digital life" on Bitcoin. According to Animoca's executive chairman and co-founder Yat Siu, Bitcoin is now primed for Web3, transitioning from a mere store of value to a store of culture for the Web3 age.

Six of Animoca Brands' portfolio companies have already joined as Genesis members, signaling a strong start for the Opal Protocol. Additionally, all future Bitcoin-based projects from Animoca Brands will collaborate with the Opal Foundation.

Launched in 2024, the Opal protocol positions itself as a decentralized ecosystem protocol on Bitcoin, powered by BLIF. Its litepaper describes it as a seamless blend of virtual and real-life experiences, offering digital extensions of reality across various domains such as banking, entertainment, education and social interactions.

The launch date of the Opal protocol and BLIF airdrop is yet to be announced, but Opal's Telegram group has hinted at its impending arrival. Despite not being operational, Opal's X profile already boasts over 270,000 subscribers.

Strategic partnership

Animoca Brands is hailed as the first strategic launch partner for the Opal Foundation. The company's collaboration aims to integrate its vision into the open Opal protocol on Bitcoin and ordinals.

Animoca's venture into Bitcoin coincides with the recent trading debut of spot Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded funds (ETF) in Hong Kong. However, the initial trading volumes of these ETFs were relatively modest compared to spot Bitcoin ETFs launched in the United States in January 2024.

SynFutures Completes Series B Funding Round and V3 Launch

SynFutures Completes Series B Funding Round and V3 LaunchSynFutures, the Singapore-based project behind the SynFutures Protocol and decentralized derivatives exchange (DEX) specializing in crypto perpetual futures, has successfully completed its Series B funding round of $22 million. In a big week for the DEX project, SynFutures also launched V3 of the protocol on public testnet, incorporating its updated automated market maker (AMM) model, Oyster AMM.Photo by micheile henderson on UnsplashPotential token launchThe Series B funding round was spearheaded by Pantera Capital, with participation from Singapore’s HashKey Capital, SIG DT Investments (a unit of the Susquehanna International Group), and other investors.Co-founder and CEO of SynFutures, Rachel Lin, stated that while the company is excited about its recent funding success, it is also open to the idea of launching a native token in the future. However, any such decision would be contingent on market conditions and regulatory considerations.Enabling decentralized crypto derivatives tradingThis Series B funding, which was initiated in 2022, marks a significant milestone for SynFutures, coming to a close nearly two and a half years after its Series A round that raised $14 million in June 2021. In total, the company has now secured approximately $38 million in funding to date. In an interview with The Block, Lin declined to indicate the company valuation associated with the recent funding round.SynFutures, established in 2021, serves as a decentralized exchange catering to the trading of crypto perpetual futures, a derivative product that allows traders to speculate on the future price of cryptocurrencies with leverage and without fixed expiration dates. This approach enables traders to rapidly profit or incur losses based on market price movements. While SynFutures operates on various blockchain networks, it currently ranks as the second-largest derivatives protocol on Polygon, with a total value locked (TVL) of over $6 million, according to data from DeFi Llama. The platform has facilitated over $22 billion in cumulative trading volume since its inception.Notably, SynFutures has introduced its latest platform public testnet version, V3, on the Ethereum testnet. The company aims to extend its support for multiple blockchains, including Polygon and zkSync Era, an Ethereum Layer 2 network, when the mainnet version goes live, scheduled for late this year to early next year. Previous iterations of the platform, such as SynFutures V2 and SynFutures V1, have been deployed on Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, and BNB Chain.V3 FeaturesOne of the standout features of SynFutures’ V3 platform is its proprietary AMM model called Oyster. Lin clarified that Oyster AMM combines concentrated liquidity AMM (offering up to 26,666x boost) with the traditional order book model (providing unlimited liquidity boost). With Oyster AMM, SynFutures aims to compete directly with centralized exchanges. The project’s Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Mark Lee maintains that the offering provides advantages over other decentralized platforms also. “While several projects, including dYdX, opt for a hybrid approach — integrating off-chain orders with on-chain settlements — the full on-chain methodology stands out for its inherent transparency and trustworthiness,” Lee told Blockworks.SynFutures currently maintains a team of approximately 20 individuals. With the latest funding infusion, the company plans to expand its workforce, particularly in engineering and business development roles, to further its mission of advancing decentralized derivatives trading.

Avalon integrated with Bybit to offer Bitcoin yield

Dubai-headquartered global crypto exchange Bybit has integrated the Avalon Finance protocol within its platform to offer users greater opportunities to earn yield on Bitcoin. Avalon Finance is a decentralized lending protocol that offers a range of financial services on the Merlin Chain, a Bitcoin layer-2 network. It facilitates users to borrow stablecoins using their Bitcoin as collateral, while also providing opportunities to earn yield by contributing to digital asset liquidity pools.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashCeFi to DeFi bridgeAvalon Labs, the driving force behind the Avalon Finance protocol, took to X on April 14 to outline that the protocol had gone live on Bybit. It stated:”By integrating with Bybit Earn, Avalon unlocks new yield opportunities for Bitcoin holders by arbitraging our fixed-rate institutional borrowing layer — delivering predictable, enhanced returns through a seamless CeFi-to-DeFi bridge.” Avalon claims to offer a mechanism which brings Bitcoin into DeFi. It accepts FBTC, an omnichain digital asset with $1.25 billion in total value locked (TVL), pegged 1:1 with Bitcoin, as collateral, while lending it out at fixed interest rates. USDT stablecoin borrowed on the strength of that Bitcoin can then be deployed by platform users to execute high-yielding DeFi strategies via the Ethena Labs synthetic dollar protocol, implicating the use of Ethena USD (USDe) and Ethena Staked USD (sUSDE). In this way, the Avalon Finance protocol is providing a conduit between centralized finance and decentralized finance. Avalon Labs claims that the offering turns Bitcoin into a productive asset. It stated: “Returns are stable, secure, and passed back to Bybit Earn users—making Bitcoin a productive asset while maintaining simplicity and risk control.” More exchange collaborations plannedIt’s understood that Avalon plans to collaborate similarly with other crypto exchanges in the future. Towards the end of 2024, the firm raised $10 million in Series A funding, with the funding round having been led by Framework Ventures, with participation from UXTO Management, Presto Labs and Kenetic Capital. At the time, Avalon Labs asserted that the funding would be used to expand its Bitcoin-centric ecosystem.  BTC-backed public debt fundTaking to X in February, the project outlined that after years of research, it was working towards the launch of a Bitcoin-backed public debt fund that would fall within the parameters of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) regulatory framework. The firm stated:”By exploring regulated investment structures, we aim to bridge the gap between traditional finance and crypto, opening new opportunities for Bitcoin-backed financial products.” Regulation A is an exemption offered by the SEC enabling a company to sell securities to the investing public without full registration. Should it eventually take this path forward, the project would pioneer this approach to launching a public debt fund as little progress has been made by others in taking such a Bitcoin-related product forward to date. Towards the end of last month, Avalon Labs announced that it has added support for BlackRock’s “BUIDL” fund, a tokenized fund created by the world’s largest asset manager, which invests in short-term U.S. Treasury bills.

OKX Strengthens Partnership with Manchester City Football Club

OKX Strengthens Partnership with Manchester City Football ClubSeychelles-based crypto exchange OKX has announced the expansion of its sponsorship deal with Manchester City Football Club, the treble-winning English Premier League soccer champions. The announcement was made through a virtual reveal video featuring player avatars, presented at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium. News of the deal was also posted on the English club’s website on Friday. While the valuation of the deal remains undisclosed, the collaboration signifies a significant milestone for both parties. The new agreement, which spans multiple years, establishes OKX as the official sleeve partner on both the men’s and women’s first-team playing kits.Photo by Giero Saaski on UnsplashExtended partnershipUnder this extended partnership, the OKX logo will be prominently displayed on the sleeves of Manchester City’s playing kits, solidifying its position as a key sponsor. Additionally, OKX will retain its presence on the club’s training kit sleeve.City Football Group, the holding company that owns Manchester City and other soccer teams like New York City FC and Melbourne City FC, oversees the management and operations of the club.OKX initially became Manchester City’s official cryptocurrency exchange partner in March 2022. Subsequently, in July of the same year, the exchange secured a sponsorship deal to feature its logo on the front of the club’s training kit throughout the 2022/2023 season. At the time, the agreement was reported to be valued at over $12 million.OKX CollectiveIn February, OKX launched the “OKX Collective” alongside Manchester City players Jack Grealish, Rúben Dias, Ilkay Gündoğan, and Alex Greenwood. This immersive metaverse fan experience offered exclusive content and rewards, allowing fans to engage with the club in a unique way.OKX’s CMO Haider Rafique expressed satisfaction with the evolving partnership, stating: “Manchester City was our first official global brand partnership, and in just a year and a half, we have come a long way. We always intended to integrate with the sport and help the club lead on leaning into Web3. Fast forward fifteen months, we now have a metaverse, an NFT initiative, and a number of other new projects that we are excited about.”Additional sports sponsorshipsBesides Manchester City, OKX has also established partnerships with other prominent sports brands and athletes, including McLaren Formula 1, the Tribeca Festival, Olympian Scotty James, and F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo. While OKX’s partnership with Manchester City strengthens its global fan base, it’s worth noting that the sale of crypto derivatives, a product offered by OKX, was effectively banned by the UK’s financial regulator in January 2021. Consequently, OKX and other crypto exchanges have refrained from advertising such services in the country. As the Premier League clubs have collectively agreed to restrict gambling sponsorships on team shirts, there are concerns that similar restrictions may be imposed on crypto company sponsorships. However, any such developments are expected to be some years away, as the changes regarding gambling sponsorships are scheduled to take effect in the 2026/2027 soccer season.Marketing spend by crypto firms has sobered up quite a bit since the heady heights of the last bull run. However, OKX remains one entity which has been fairly consistent in continuing its marketing efforts regardless of market conditions.
