Memeland Coin Launch Secures $10M for the Project

Web3 & Enterprise·October 27, 2023, 12:41 AM

Memeland, a Web3 venture studio, made headlines on Thursday as its token sale for MEME tokens reached $10 million in commitments just after going live. The people behind the project are the Hong Kong-based team that is also associated with the popular meme-sharing site, 9GAG.

Memeland represents a collection of 9,999 utility-enabled profile pictures (PFPs).

9GAG is a meme-centric Hong Kong-based entertainment website that gained a significant following since its launch in 2008. With millions of followers across various social media platforms, 9GAG’s foray into the Web3 space through Memeland was eagerly awaited. Memeland had already introduced several NFT projects, including Captainz, Potatoez, and MVP, prior to launching its native token on Thursday.

42 minute sell-out

Supporters of the project had joined a waitlist prior to them being granted access to the sale. Earlier in the week, the project had tweeted out that the MEME tokens that it was gearing up to sell had “No utility. No roadmap. No promises. No expectation of financial return. Just 100% memes.” In fact, this mantra has been etched into the project’s whitepaper from the outset. “$MEME is completely useless and for entertainment purposes only,” the whitepaper clarifies.

Even though the sale had already sold out in record time, it was scheduled to continue until Friday morning. During this extended period, those who have previously joined the waitlist can gain access to the tokens.

The team behind Memeland, having clocked up experience previously via 9GAG, has made them no strangers to the world of online humor and entertainment. The Memeland project introduces an array of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and innovative applications that fuse elements from the metaverse, gaming, and NFTs.

Project pipeline

Memeland is gearing up to launch various additional platforms in the near future. These include Holders.com, a travel service; GMGM.com, a video-sharing platform; Stakeland, which will be a crypto staking application; and Petsland, a service centered around pets.

MEME tokenomics

The MEME token has a total supply of 69,000,000,000 MEME, with an initial price per token set at US$0.001. According to the Memecoin team, 2.75% of the total supply will be unlocked on the first day, with the remaining amount unlocked daily over the next 18 months.

The token distribution breakdown is as follows:

Private sale: 6,900,000,000 (10%) — Exclusively for Memeland Captainz holders

Contributors: 13,800,000,000 (20%) — Partners and team members contributing to the Memeland project

Fire sale: 8,280,000,000 (12%) — Reserved for the allowlist and certain waitlist participants

Airdrops: 17,250,000,000 (25%)

Ecosystem fund: 22,770,000,000 (33%)

Those who possess specific NFTs from the Memeland ecosystem have received varying allocations during the Fire Sale, depending on the type, rarity, and quantity of their holdings.

With a strong foundation rooted in meme culture and a team experienced in delivering internet humor to millions, Memeland’s potential development going forward may be as exciting as the memes that inspired it.

Singapore Elects Crypto Skeptic as President

Singapore Elects Crypto Skeptic as PresidentGarnering 70.4% of all votes cast on Saturday, Singaporeans chose to elect Tharman Shanmugaratnam as their next president, a move that may have implications for Singapore’s outlook when it comes to digital assets. While many had hoped that he would be the nation’s first non-Chinese prime minister, the crypto industry has greeted his rise to this largely ceremonial role with mixed feelings. Shanmugaratnam’s previous stances on cryptocurrency and digital assets have been predominantly critical.Photo by Justin Lim on UnsplashFormer MAS ChairmanIn the past, the president-elect has referred to cryptocurrency as “slightly crazy” and “purely speculative.” His ascent to the presidency comes after a distinguished career that includes serving as the former finance minister, deputy prime minister, and chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), the country’s central bank, from 2011 to 2023.Crypto platform collapsesIt was during his tenure at MAS that two prominent crypto companies, Three Arrows Capital (3AC) and Terraform Labs, faced catastrophic collapses. The demise of Terraform Labs, along with its TerraUSD (UST) stablecoin, triggered a severe “crypto winter” in May 2022, from which the industry is still struggling to recover. This downfall wiped out a staggering $500 billion in value over just two weeks, devastating the portfolios of numerous retail investors. The ripple effect of TerraUSD’s fall also engulfed 3AC, a significant cryptocurrency hedge fund headquartered in Singapore. The contagion spread across the cryptocurrency market, leading to the downfall of other major entities like crypto lending platforms Celsius Network and Voyager Digital, alongside Singapore-based Hodlnaut.Given that these catastrophic events unfolded during Shanmugaratnam’s tenure at MAS, it’s plausible that he bore the brunt of the consequences. That might explain why in speaking on the subject in 2021, he appeared to be more accommodative, suggesting that there may be a useful role that crypto could play and highlighting that Singapore had allowed crypto businesses to develop within the city-state.In June of last year, MAS reprimanded 3AC for providing misleading information and exceeding the allowed assets under management (AUM) threshold, thereby breaching its status as a registered fund management company. In January, Shanmugaratnam said that regulating the crypto sector would give credibility to speculation and on that basis, it would be best to leave it unregulated. He went on to suggest that crypto should be subject to existing regulation as laid down for traditional finance.Early stage concernsBack in 2018, when he was Singapore’s finance minister, Shanmugaratnam questioned the wisdom of broad regulation potentially legitimizing a speculative and “slightly crazy” market. During the 2018 World Economic Forum, he emphasized the importance of anti-money laundering measures and advocated for educating consumers about the risks inherent in the unregulated crypto sector.Although he acknowledged blockchain’s potential to enhance global payment systems, Shanmugaratnam favored integrating existing traditional payment mechanisms as an alternative to blockchain innovations.Singapore’s new president brings with him a history of skepticism towards cryptocurrency and digital assets. However, with a largely ceremonial role relative to day-to-day governance, he’s not in a position to take direct action that could hold the sector back although he will have the power to initiate corruption investigations upon the advice of the Singaporean cabinet.

Subreddit Token Price Slide Following Surge

Subreddit Token Price Slide Following SurgeReddit’s subreddit community tokens, Moon and Brick, having experienced a remarkable surge in prices last week fueled by a significant increase in trading volume, have taken a downward trajectory, plummeting in price.Photo by Mike Petrucci on UnsplashCrypto.com token listingThe Moon token, associated with Reddit’s r/CryptoCurrency community boasting over 6.5 million members, shot up from approximately $0.09 to nearly $0.58 on July 19, just after Singapore trading platform Crypto.com listed the token.Concurrently, trading volume spiked to around $3 million on Wednesday, marking an impressive boost.Similarly, the Fortnite subreddit community token, Brick, which Crypto.com distributes as a reward to contributors of r/Fortnite, also witnessed a substantial price surge. The token’s value surged from $0.01 on July 17 to approximately $0.10 on July 19, according to data from CoinGecko.Surge acknowledgedIn response to the sudden price surges, Crypto.com released a note early on Monday, acknowledging the surge both tokens had experienced recently. However, in a swift turn of events, both tokens experienced a significant downturn in the past 24 hours, with their prices plummeting by over 20%.As of midday (ET) on Monday, Moon was trading at $0.33, while Brick was valued just under $0.05, as reported by CoinGecko data. Moreover, trading volumes for both tokens have significantly contracted during this period of volatility. Moon’s volume shrank from over $1 million on July 23 to approximately $200,000 on Monday. On the other hand, Brick’s volume saw an even more drastic decrease, falling from approximately $210,000 on July 23 to a mere $26,000 on Monday.Terms of service changeMarket analysts speculate that the recent change in Reddit’s Terms of Service might have been the catalyst for the initial price increases. Reddit’s alteration of its Terms of Service on July 16 to permit users to trade community tokens and avatars potentially triggered the surge in token prices. It appears that Web2 centralized virtual goods such as coins and awards are making way for tradable Web3 community points.Speculating on the token price surge, Bobby Ong, the Co-Founder and COO of Malaysia-headquartered cryptocurrency data aggregator CoinGecko, wrote via Twitter last week: “Both tokens increased at the speculation of the changes coming at Reddit. No one knows exactly what is happening but Reddit deprecating Web2 Coins & Awards while allowing trading of their Web3 CPs could be something to monitor in the coming months.”Despite the recent downturn, the overall crypto space remains highly dynamic and unpredictable. Events such as the listing of tokens on prominent trading platforms can cause rapid price fluctuations. As always, that scenario makes it essential for investors to approach these assets with caution. While Moon and Brick may have encountered a sharp decline, the cryptocurrency market, in general, has proven its resilience and ability to rebound with Bitcoin currently holding a unit price of $29,125. As the market continues to evolve and gain wider acceptance, investors will need to continue to exercise caution and consider the volatility inherent in digital assets.
