Singapore Elects Crypto Skeptic as President

Policy & Regulation·September 05, 2023, 12:40 AM

Garnering 70.4% of all votes cast on Saturday, Singaporeans chose to elect Tharman Shanmugaratnam as their next president, a move that may have implications for Singapore’s outlook when it comes to digital assets.

While many had hoped that he would be the nation’s first non-Chinese prime minister, the crypto industry has greeted his rise to this largely ceremonial role with mixed feelings. Shanmugaratnam’s previous stances on cryptocurrency and digital assets have been predominantly critical.

Former MAS Chairman

In the past, the president-elect has referred to cryptocurrency as “slightly crazy” and “purely speculative.” His ascent to the presidency comes after a distinguished career that includes serving as the former finance minister, deputy prime minister, and chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), the country’s central bank, from 2011 to 2023.

Crypto platform collapses

It was during his tenure at MAS that two prominent crypto companies, Three Arrows Capital (3AC) and Terraform Labs, faced catastrophic collapses.

The demise of Terraform Labs, along with its TerraUSD (UST) stablecoin, triggered a severe “crypto winter” in May 2022, from which the industry is still struggling to recover. This downfall wiped out a staggering $500 billion in value over just two weeks, devastating the portfolios of numerous retail investors.

The ripple effect of TerraUSD’s fall also engulfed 3AC, a significant cryptocurrency hedge fund headquartered in Singapore. The contagion spread across the cryptocurrency market, leading to the downfall of other major entities like crypto lending platforms Celsius Network and Voyager Digital, alongside Singapore-based Hodlnaut.

Given that these catastrophic events unfolded during Shanmugaratnam’s tenure at MAS, it’s plausible that he bore the brunt of the consequences. That might explain why in speaking on the subject in 2021, he appeared to be more accommodative, suggesting that there may be a useful role that crypto could play and highlighting that Singapore had allowed crypto businesses to develop within the city-state.

In June of last year, MAS reprimanded 3AC for providing misleading information and exceeding the allowed assets under management (AUM) threshold, thereby breaching its status as a registered fund management company.

In January, Shanmugaratnam said that regulating the crypto sector would give credibility to speculation and on that basis, it would be best to leave it unregulated. He went on to suggest that crypto should be subject to existing regulation as laid down for traditional finance.

Early stage concerns

Back in 2018, when he was Singapore’s finance minister, Shanmugaratnam questioned the wisdom of broad regulation potentially legitimizing a speculative and “slightly crazy” market. During the 2018 World Economic Forum, he emphasized the importance of anti-money laundering measures and advocated for educating consumers about the risks inherent in the unregulated crypto sector.

Although he acknowledged blockchain’s potential to enhance global payment systems, Shanmugaratnam favored integrating existing traditional payment mechanisms as an alternative to blockchain innovations.

Singapore’s new president brings with him a history of skepticism towards cryptocurrency and digital assets. However, with a largely ceremonial role relative to day-to-day governance, he’s not in a position to take direct action that could hold the sector back although he will have the power to initiate corruption investigations upon the advice of the Singaporean cabinet.

Exploring the motivations behind Crescendo’s multi-million dollar investment in LINE NEXT

Exploring the motivations behind Crescendo’s multi-million dollar investment in LINE NEXTIn a move that has made headlines as the largest investment made in the Asian blockchain and Web3 industry this year, Seoul-based private equity firm Crescendo Equity Partners has decided to invest $140 million in LINE NEXT, the NFT business arm of Tokyo-based Internet giant LINE Corporation. According to South Korean news outlet DealSite, this can be seen as a strategic decision to leverage LINE’s global network, which dominates the Japanese market. Considering Crescendo’s track record of successful investments in various IT companies, the industry is keen to see whether the firm can replicate this success in the rapidly growing blockchain sector.Photo by Pepi Stojanovski on UnsplashConsortium takes controlAccording to the South Korean Financial Supervisory Service’s (FSS) Data Analysis, Retrieval and Transfer (DART) System on Thursday (local time), Crescendo’s special purpose company (SPC) established to manage the LINE NEXT investment dubbed Ludwig Holdings will act as a third party in the investment by providing KRW 130 billion in paid-in capital. Other financial investors will also contribute KRW 52 billion through a consortium formed with Crescendo, bringing the total investment amount to KRW 182 billion, or approximately $140 million. As a result of this capital increase, 795,401 new shares will be issued. Crescendo’s consortium will thus secure a 50% stake plus one more share, making it the largest shareholder group. However, among individual shareholders, LY Corporation will maintain its position as the single largest shareholder. The existing number of shares was 795,400. Crescendo plans to utilize its third fund, which raised KRW 1.1 trillion in 2021, to provide the funds by next February.Smooth transitionAlthough the consortium has become the largest shareholder group, there is no indication of an immediate change in LINE NEXT’s current management board. This decision is likely because blockchain development companies should be run by executives who are familiar with the unique ins and outs of the blockchain industry. The firm’s current CEO, Ko Young-su, is an IT expert who had been responsible for financial technology (fintech) operations at LINE Corp.Web3 expansionThrough the investment, LINE NEXT plans to popularize Web3 by expanding its global platform and developing new services. This includes DOSI, a global mobile NFT marketplace app for trading digital products, which will be integrated with LINE’s Japanese NFT marketplace LINE NFT. DOSI’s launch is scheduled for January next year.Navigating uncharted territoryMany believe that LINE NEXT’s ambitions for dominating the blockchain sector aligning with Crescendo’s tradition of investing in promising IT companies is sufficient justification for the major funding decision. However, some observers find the development surprising, considering the fact that it is rare for private equity firms in Korea to make such large investments in blockchain firms — an industry that has mostly been an unpopular choice for investors, likely due to its close association with crypto assets. Indeed, Crescendo’s interest in the company may have been partly driven by the fact that it is more focused on blockchain technology itself rather than crypto.“Crescendo seems to have focused on LINE’s global network, which pushed it to invest in its subsidiary. Considering the popularity of NFTs and other related projects last year, expanding this area of business seems plausible,” said an anonymous source from the investment banking industry. “Peter Thiel [the billionaire entrepreneur and venture capitalist who sponsored Crescendo] is known to have a keen interest in blockchain technology and is actively making investments in the sector, which probably made the decision-making process much smoother.”This development signifies yet another shift in the evolving business landscape, where parts of the industry that have not been traditionally associated with blockchain are increasingly recognizing the potential of its role in the future of industry and technology.

BIT Exchange Unveils XRP Options Trading

BIT Exchange Unveils XRP Options TradingBIT Exchange, a cryptocurrency derivatives platform, has announced the introduction of XRP options trading in a move that provides for more advanced trading dynamics within the digital assets space. The development, disclosed via a blog post published to the company’s website on Thursday, offers users the unprecedented opportunity to engage in XRP options trading without the need to possess the actual cryptocurrency.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashUS dollar settlementA distinguishing feature of this initiative is that profit and loss settlements will be conducted in US dollars. To ensure a seamless experience, BIT Exchange has partnered with OrBit Markets to maintain robust order book liquidity. This expansion of offerings complements the exchange’s existing suite, which already includes stalwarts like Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Cardano (ADA), Toncoin (TON), and Milady (LADYS).Facilitating hedgingFor the uninitiated, options are derivative contracts that empower the holder with the right to buy or sell the underlying asset at a predetermined price before a specified date. Call options grant the holder the buying privilege, while put options provide the selling prerogative. Typically deployed for hedging purposes, options play a pivotal role in mitigating bullish or bearish risks, and they can also act as a supplementary revenue source when traders “write” options alongside their spot market holdings.Justin Buitendam, BIT Exchange’s Global Head of Institutional Sales, remarked on the milestone, stating: “We’re excited to be among the early platforms offering XRP options trading to institutional and retail traders, providing both long and short options trading opportunities.”XRP boostAs of now, XRP boasts a market capitalization of $26.5 billion, positioning it as the world’s fifth-largest cryptocurrency. Notably, XRP, akin to several other alternative cryptocurrencies, exhibits greater volatility compared to the more established Bitcoin and Ether. The native token of the Ripple global payments network has experienced a market resurgence in recent weeks, following a positive outcome to a lawsuit taken by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) against Ripple Labs in the United States. In the wake of that decision, many cryptocurrency exchanges that had delisted the token immediately reinstated it. BIT Exchange’s strategic move to introduce XRP options aligns with those recent legal developments.Ripple, as the issuer of the XRP token, garnered a partial victory in its ongoing legal battle against the SEC. The court ruled that XRP is not classified as a security when traded on centralized exchanges. However, a different classification may apply when XRP is directly sold to institutions. The matter is far from settled, however. More recently, the SEC has sought permission to challenge the court’s verdict, underscoring the dynamic and evolving landscape of cryptocurrency regulations.BIT Exchange was spun out of Singapore-based crypto financial services platform, Matrixport. Both have been co-founded by Jihan Wu, better known for having founded leading Chinese crypto mining outfit Bitmain.

Indian Crypto Platform Mudrex Expands Operations in ItalyMudrex, the Indian cryptocurrency investment platform, has achieved a new milestone by successfully registering to operate in Italy.News of Mudrex’s move into the Italian market emerged via a press release published on Tuesday, as well as through an interview given recently by CEO and Co-Founder Edul Patel to CoinDesk. The expansion into Italy marks a rare international move for Indian crypto entities, which have faced challenges due to stringent taxation policies and the global crypto market’s fluctuations.Photo by Mathew Schwartz on UnsplashGlobal expansion planPatel unveiled Mudrex’s ambitious plan for global expansion, with half of the team actively working on international initiatives. The firm’s journey into the Italian market involved gaining approval for registration with Italy’s Organismo Agenti e Mediatori (OAM), a crucial step for crypto firms operating in the country. This registration, granted on September 1, was a strategic move that the company had been carefully planning. Patel explained:“We just wanted some time to pass after the approval before we made the news public.”Coin Sets and thematic indexesDespite having only one million registered users, Mudrex stands out as one of India’s largest crypto platforms. It offers a unique investment approach, focusing on index investing through Coin Sets, an innovative alternative to speculative trading. These Coin Sets encompass various categories, including small, mid, and large-cap assets, as well as Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH). Additionally, Mudrex provides thematic indexes that cover layer one and layer two solutions, NFTs, metaverse projects, and Dow trackers.“While India is our home and where we initially grew, our international customers have told us that investment products in their regions lack diversity,” Patel noted. “We believe that our product is unique and offers distinct advantages.”Mudrex was established in 2018 in Bengaluru while also establishing an office in San Francisco. Alongside Patel, its other Founders included Alankar Saxena as CTO, Rohit Goyal in the role of VP of DeFi, and Prince Arora as VP of Engineering. In 2021 it raised $2.5 million in funding with a view towards launching crypto mutual funds and ETFs. It followed that up in 2022 when it raised $6.5 million in a pre-series A funding round, supported by Y-Combinator, Arkham Ventures, and Tribe Capital. The firm participated in what has become a crypto platform trend over recent months by incorporating an AI chatbot into its platform in June to assist platform users when it comes to learning about crypto.Lithuanian trading licenseMudrex’s expansion into Italy was facilitated by the company’s prior fulfillment of EU operating requirements. The company had obtained a license in Lithuania less than a year ago, enabling it to navigate the EU regulatory landscape efficiently. During the six months of pursuing registration in Italy, Mudrex’s presence in the EU grew substantially, with user numbers increasing from approximately 5,000 to 17,000.With its foothold established in Italy, Mudrex now seeks to make its investment products accessible through various registered entities, including banking partner apps. Patel confirmed ongoing discussions with potential partners, further signaling the company’s commitment to expanding its global footprint.
