Korean financial holding company Hana Financial Group has formed a strategic partnership with game publisher Netmarble, aiming to capture the attention of digitally savvy youths in South Korea. Their strategy involves introducing innovative financial services and identifying opportunities for joint business projects, as reported by local news outlet Consumer Times.

The two sides intend to launch Hana Financial Group’s services within the realm of Grand Cross: Metaworld, a 3D animated massively multiplayer online (MMO) game. Grand Cross is being developed using Unreal Engine 5 and is a project led by Metaverse World, an affiliate of Netmarble.

While the companies strive to collaborate on joint marketing promotions that encompass both gaming and financial aspects, the specific plans for executing these initiatives are still in the process of being developed.

Some industry experts anticipate that the two entities will leverage their respective strengths within the virtual world to create synergistic outcomes.

 

User interaction and advertising benefits

According to a tech insider who spoke to Consumer Times, there are indications that Netmarble will initially empower Hana to feature the financial group’s affiliated entities on the gaming company’s metaverse platform. This strategic step holds the potential for fostering user interaction and reaping advertising benefits. Additionally, the source mentioned that subsequent to this phase, Hana might take steps to enable customers to access banking services within the virtual domain.

If, in the future, in-game goods were to establish themselves as a dependable form of currency due to potential policy reforms, it’s believed that Hana Financial Group would play an even more substantial role, leading to increased business opportunities for both partners, the source noted. These offerings would primarily cater to digital native generations.

The United Arab Emirates, a neighbor to Oman, has notably begun to accept applications from Web3-related companies. The Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), the local regulator in Dubai, has rolled out comprehensive regulatory directives that govern licensing requirements, company operations, and compliance.Oman, for its part, is not just focusing on infrastructure. It is also addressing regulatory aspects by requiring registered digital asset firms to establish a presence within the country. Evidence of those efforts emerged earlier this month when the Omani regulator, the Capital Market Authority (CMA), invited public feedback on a consultation paper that feeds into the development of a virtual asset regulatory framework in Oman. Tiger Brokers subsidiary awarded crypto license in Hong Kong

A subsidiary company of Tiger Brokers, a Singapore-based online brokerage firm with nine million users, has been awarded a virtual asset trading license in Hong Kong. The subsidiary, YAX (Hong Kong) Limited, has been added to a list of licensed virtual asset trading providers (VATPs) on the website of the local regulator, the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC). Photo by Simon Zhu on UnsplashSeven platforms licensedBack in August, YAX found itself among a list of 11 VATP applicants that had been provided with feedback with regard to issues that needed to be addressed following inspections carried out by the SFC. Evidently, those issues have been resolved given that the company has now been awarded a trading license. YAX is now just one of nine trading platforms that have obtained licenses in the Chinese autonomous territory. These include OSL and HashKey, who were the first entities to be licensed in Hong Kong. HKVAX followed with approval granted in August 2023. Last October, SFC CEO Julia Leung told local news media that the regulator was dealing with 11 applications and that four approvals were imminent. In December, four additional exchanges, namely HKbitEX, Accumulus, DFX Labs and EX.IO, were awarded licenses. Bixin.com, WhaleFin and Matrixport HK are among the eleven applicants that have yet to receive a license. Alongside YAX, Panthertrade (Hong Kong) Limited was issued a license on Jan. 27, meaning that seven platforms have now been licensed. Panthertrade is a subsidiary company of Chinese mobile internet firm Cheetah Mobile.  Crypto trading and custodyOnce launched, YAX intends to extend crypto trading services alongside crypto custody to its clients. The company’s CEO, Kelvin Liu Kai, has said that as it rolls out its service offering, YAX will look to enhance speed trading, focus on transparency and security relative to the trading process and reduce custodial risks.  Tiger Brokers CEO Wu Tianhua has suggested that the virtual asset sector has grown rapidly on a global basis and with that, he sees “immense potential” for further growth. He added:“Cryptocurrencies are a key future investment trend. The establishment of YAX not only demonstrates our confidence in the potential of the market, but also showcases our firm commitment to creating a transparent and secure trading environment.” Swift licensing processThese latest licensing applicant approvals follow confirmation earlier this month that the SFC had extended access to its swift licensing process to all new VATP applicants. The four applicants approved in December had been the first to be put through the process.  In December, Joseph Chan, Acting Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury (FSTB), confirmed to Hong Kong’s Legislative Council that in addition to the swift licensing process, a consultative panel for licensed trading platforms will be established in early 2025. It emerged in October 2023 that both YAX and Panthertrade were planning on submitting applications for VATP licensing in Hong Kong. With licensing pending, YAX parent company Tiger Brokers partnered with HashKey Exchange in May 2024, in order to launch a virtual asset trading service.  The service was made available to retail investors through the Tiger Trade platform the following month, enabling the platform’s 800,000 users to trade Bitcoin and Ethereum.

High-profile sports sponsorships driving Crypto.com user base expansion

Crypto.com, the Singapore-headquartered cryptocurrency exchange platform, has outlined that it has seen significant growth thanks to high-profile sports sponsorship and advertising. Reaping the rewardsThe company has established advertising partnerships with Formula 1 (F1) motor racing and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). These lucrative sponsorship deals have propelled the exchange into the spotlight of two massive fan bases, contributing to its expansion. In an interview with Cointelegraph last week, Eric Anziani, president and chief operating officer of Crypto.com, discussed the company's successful advertising campaigns with F1 and the UFC, as well as its naming rights deal for the Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles. In 2021, what was then the Staples Center was renamed to the Crypto.com Arena in a $700 million naming rights deal. Anziani expressed gratitude for these partnerships, emphasizing the importance of staying top of mind for users in the competitive cryptocurrency market.  That same year, the company signed a multi-year partnership deal with leading French football club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), rolling out various PSG-related marketing activities since then.Photo by Austin Loveing on UnsplashBrand recognition benefitsMarket surveys conducted by Crypto.com indicate a high level of global awareness and brand recognition among retail cryptocurrency users. The exchange's logo prominently displayed during F1 races and UFC events has helped it reach millions of fans worldwide. ESPN reports an average of 1.11 million viewers per race for the 2023 F1 season in the United States alone, with global viewership exceeding one billion over the entire race calendar. Similarly, the UFC boasts a global audience, with some of its biggest fights attracting millions of pay-per-view viewers. Anziani highlighted the effectiveness of these partnerships in bringing people into the cryptocurrency space.  User base approaching 100 millionThese partnerships have significantly contributed to Crypto.com's growing user base, which is approaching 100 million users in 2024, up from an estimated 80 million in the previous year. Anziani discussed the factors that drive users' choice of exchange platforms, emphasizing the importance of compliance, security, convenient access to cryptocurrency and competitive fees. He noted that different users prioritize different aspects based on their trading preferences and requirements. The firm is not alone in pursuing high-profile sports sponsorship deals. Rival platform OKX has an ongoing sponsorship deal in place with Manchester City Football Club in the English Premier League (EPL). It also has doubled down recently on the sponsorship of F1 racing team McLaren. Other notable partnerships include crypto gambling platform Stake.com’s sponsorship of Sauber F1, crypto exchange platform Kraken’s deal with Williams F1 and BingX’s sleeve sponsorship agreement with Chelsea football club in the EPL. High-profile marketing initiatives are alive and well, although in a much more sober way than in 2022 when six crypto companies featured in Super Bowl advertising in the United States. Kraken’s chief marketing officer, Mayur Gupta, recently stated that the Super Bowl is no longer an effective means of promotion for crypto companies.
