Subreddit Token Price Slide Following Surge

Web3 & Enterprise·July 25, 2023, 1:06 AM

Reddit’s subreddit community tokens, Moon and Brick, having experienced a remarkable surge in prices last week fueled by a significant increase in trading volume, have taken a downward trajectory, plummeting in price.

Crypto.com token listing

The Moon token, associated with Reddit’s r/CryptoCurrency community boasting over 6.5 million members, shot up from approximately $0.09 to nearly $0.58 on July 19, just after Singapore trading platform Crypto.com listed the token.

Concurrently, trading volume spiked to around $3 million on Wednesday, marking an impressive boost.

Similarly, the Fortnite subreddit community token, Brick, which Crypto.com distributes as a reward to contributors of r/Fortnite, also witnessed a substantial price surge. The token’s value surged from $0.01 on July 17 to approximately $0.10 on July 19, according to data from CoinGecko.

Surge acknowledged

In response to the sudden price surges, Crypto.com released a note early on Monday, acknowledging the surge both tokens had experienced recently. However, in a swift turn of events, both tokens experienced a significant downturn in the past 24 hours, with their prices plummeting by over 20%.

As of midday (ET) on Monday, Moon was trading at $0.33, while Brick was valued just under $0.05, as reported by CoinGecko data. Moreover, trading volumes for both tokens have significantly contracted during this period of volatility. Moon’s volume shrank from over $1 million on July 23 to approximately $200,000 on Monday. On the other hand, Brick’s volume saw an even more drastic decrease, falling from approximately $210,000 on July 23 to a mere $26,000 on Monday.

Terms of service change

Market analysts speculate that the recent change in Reddit’s Terms of Service might have been the catalyst for the initial price increases. Reddit’s alteration of its Terms of Service on July 16 to permit users to trade community tokens and avatars potentially triggered the surge in token prices. It appears that Web2 centralized virtual goods such as coins and awards are making way for tradable Web3 community points.

Speculating on the token price surge, Bobby Ong, the Co-Founder and COO of Malaysia-headquartered cryptocurrency data aggregator CoinGecko, wrote via Twitter last week: “Both tokens increased at the speculation of the changes coming at Reddit. No one knows exactly what is happening but Reddit deprecating Web2 Coins & Awards while allowing trading of their Web3 CPs could be something to monitor in the coming months.”

Despite the recent downturn, the overall crypto space remains highly dynamic and unpredictable. Events such as the listing of tokens on prominent trading platforms can cause rapid price fluctuations. As always, that scenario makes it essential for investors to approach these assets with caution.

While Moon and Brick may have encountered a sharp decline, the cryptocurrency market, in general, has proven its resilience and ability to rebound with Bitcoin currently holding a unit price of $29,125. As the market continues to evolve and gain wider acceptance, investors will need to continue to exercise caution and consider the volatility inherent in digital assets.

CoinDCX Expands Okto Wallet’s Global Reach with Transak Integration

CoinDCX Expands Okto Wallet’s Global Reach with Transak IntegrationIndian cryptocurrency exchange CoinDCX has moved to broaden the accessibility of its self-custody wallet, Okto. The exchange recently announced the addition of Transak, a major on-ramp platform that enables a fiat-to-crypto payment gateway integration, to enhance the wallet’s global capabilities.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashBuilding on OktoThat’s according to a report published by Cointelegraph on Thursday. Okto was introduced by CoinDCX in August 2022, and the firm swiftly moved to expand its services. The integration with Transak represents a pivotal step in this direction. This strategic integration immediately expands the reach of the Okto wallet from supporting 60 countries to an impressive 155 jurisdictions. Neeraj Khandelwal, Co-Founder of both CoinDCX and Okto, emphasized the significance of this move, stating that it allows users in numerous countries to engage with cryptocurrencies directly through Okto. While Transak supports approximately 160 tokens, Okto goes above and beyond by allowing users to store more than 1,000 tokens across multiple blockchain networks, including Polygon, Fantom, Avalanche, and others. According to an Okto spokesperson, the wallet can accommodate up to 3,000 tokens, providing ample flexibility for cryptocurrency enthusiasts.Seamless fiat-to-crypto conversionKhandelwal also spoke to the value add that a more seamless asset conversion process will bring. He stated:“The integration of Transak now allows users to seamlessly convert fiat to crypto right within the app. Prior to this integration, users had to transfer funds from another decentralized wallet, such as MetaMask.”Transak’s integration brings a key feature to Okto — the ability for users to purchase cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) directly within the wallet. Notably, this functionality accepts a wide range of fiat currencies, including the US dollar, euro, Hong Kong dollar, and others. Prior to the Transak integration, users were required to transfer digital assets from external wallets like MetaMask. With this development, Okto streamlines the process, enabling users to seamlessly convert fiat into crypto within the app itself.Months-long integration processIt’s worth noting that although the announcement of Transak’s support on Okto was made on Thursday, the integration process began several months earlier. As early as August, some Indian users reported encountering Transak while Okto was in the testing phase. The integration process itself commenced in April, with the official roll-out to all customers occurring in mid-September.Transak, a global Web3 payment and onboarding infrastructure provider, plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between traditional finance and the digital asset ecosystem. It is a well-established on-ramp solution in the cryptocurrency industry, with platforms like MetaMask, Coinbase, and PancakeSwap among its clientele. In recent days, Okto has also announced a partnership with ReHold, a multi-chain protocol which has been developed to enable users to maximize their crypto earnings. In the coming weeks, Okto and ReHold will work towards integrating Okto’s wallet with ReHold. The Okto-Transak integration is in line with Transak’s mission to facilitate crypto adoption by providing easy access to digital assets. Earlier this week, Transak also announced its integration with The Open Network’s (TON) wallet, known as Tonkeeper. This collaboration opens up Toncoin (TON) purchases directly with fiat currencies to users in more than 150 countries, marking a significant milestone in expanding the TON ecosystem.

South Korea seeks buyer for NXC shares tied to gaming giant Nexon

The South Korean government has begun the process of selling its stake in NXC, the largest shareholder of Nexon, a video game company originally founded in South Korea and now headquartered in Japan. According to the Seoul Economic Daily, which cited industry sources, the Ministry of Economy and Finance began a public sale process on June 30 for its shares in NXC. These shares were received as payment for inheritance tax from the family of Nexon’s late founder, Kim Jung-ju. In February 2023, Kim’s widow, Yoo Jung-hyun—who also serves as chair of the board at NXC—along with other family members, transferred 851,968 NXC shares to the government to settle the inheritance tax liability.Photo by Kelly Sikkema on UnsplashEarlier failed sale attemptsThe government’s latest attempt to sell the shares follows two previous efforts that failed, primarily due to high asking prices at the time. The current estimated value of the shares stands at 4.7 trillion won (approximately $3.47 billion), reflecting a 20% premium over their net value due to the rights associated with company control. However, the shares are expected to sell at a lower price, since acquiring them would not lead to actual control of the company—Kim’s surviving family still holds a majority stake in NXC. Industry insiders view Chinese tech giant Tencent as a strong contender to purchase the shares. However, Tencent recently denied reports from last month that claimed it had approached Kim’s surviving family to discuss a possible acquisition of Nexon. The company had also expressed interest in acquiring Nexon back in 2019 but ultimately did not take part in the bidding process. According to Chosun Ilbo, a Tencent acquisition is being viewed as a possibility, as the Shenzhen-based firm continues efforts to secure overseas intellectual property. One industry source noted that Tencent tends to invest in Korean game developers every three to four years. The source also mentioned that Tencent had approached Korean venture capital analysts specializing in gaming last year to gather information for a potential acquisition shortlist. If Tencent were to purchase all of the government-held NXC shares, it would become the second-largest shareholder in the company. Given its ongoing investments in the Korean gaming sector, the source said it is likely Tencent will participate in the sale process organized by the government. Nexon’s blockchain pushNotably, Nexon has been expanding its presence in the cryptocurrency space. According to data from Bitcoin Treasuries, the company holds 1,717 Bitcoin (BTC), acquired at an average price of $58,226 per coin. Beyond its BTC investment, Nexon is actively exploring blockchain technology through its Web3 IP-expansion project, NEXPACE.  This initiative features the MapleStory Universe ecosystem, along with MapleStory N, a PC-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that incorporates blockchain technology. Both projects are powered by the NXPC token. MapleStory was originally developed by Wizet Studio in 2003 and became part of Nexon when the company acquired the studio the following year.
