$500 million valuation

The funding round, led by Polychain Capital and Shanghai-headquartered Qiming Venture Partners, has resulted in a valuation of $500 million for p0x Labs, according to a blog post published by the project on Wednesday. This equity-based investment demonstrates a growing interest in not only the project’s token but also the team behind it.

Manta Network aims to leverage zero-knowledge (ZK) technology to address the scalability challenges and privacy concerns prevalent on the Ethereum network. By harnessing zero-knowledge proofs, Manta enables users to verify the authenticity of information without disclosing the underlying data.

This approach provides individuals with complete control over their identities while mitigating the risks of surveillance. Consequently, Manta Network is seeking to attract users who have reservations about utilizing DeFi protocols due to the transparent nature of transactions on public blockchain networks.

At the recent EthCC event held in Paris, the project unveiled the testnet for its Layer 2 network, known as Manta Pacific. This testnet operates in an environment with low gas fees, fostering cost-effective transactions for users. Manta Pacific is designed to complement the existing Layer 1 solution, Manta Atlantic, which focuses on achieving compliant on-chain privacy.

VC support

Luke Pearson, an investor at Polychain Capital, expressed his enthusiasm for Manta Network’s expansion within the Ethereum ecosystem and confirmed Polychain’s continued support through this Series A funding round. Meanwhile, Yi Tang, Principal at Qiming Venture Partners, believes that their contribution will not only help Manta Network penetrate the Asian market but also attract the attention of Web2 brands.

With the additional funding, p0x Labs aims to establish a global presence for Manta Network. Kenny Li, a core contributor at Manta Network, emphasized the significance of partnering with one of China’s largest investors to gain a stronger foothold in Asia, particularly China. The team is enthusiastic about the opportunities this collaboration will bring.

Industry partnerships

Manta Network has already witnessed substantial demand for its offerings, with partnerships with projects such as Arbitrum and Linea resulting in the creation of over 300,000 zero-knowledge soulbound tokens. These tokens enable the verification of on-chain identities without compromising data confidentiality. Additionally, the native Manta Wallet has garnered more than 200,000 installations, and innovative features like email-based notifications have contributed to a collective user base exceeding 1.5 million users.

Looking ahead, the newly launched testnet with its plug-and-play functionality is expected to streamline the development process for Manta Network’s ecosystem. Developers will be able to allocate their time and resources more efficiently toward building their core products, driving innovation within the zero-knowledge space.

The successful funding round and the launch of the Layer 2 testnet mark significant milestones for Manta Network and p0x Labs. With continued support from prominent investors, Manta Network appears to be setting itself up to unlock the true potential of zero-knowledge technology and drive adoption across various industries.

Binance partners with Bhutan on tourism payment system

The government of Bhutan, the Buddhist kingdom nestled in the Himalayas, has partnered with cryptocurrency payment service Binance Pay to launch the world’s first national-level crypto tourism payment system. In a recent blog post, Binance outlined details of the collaboration. Alongside the government and Binance, Bhutanese digital bank DK Bank will also play a role. The payment system enables international visitors to Bhutan who also happen to be Binance account holders to pay for a range of services within the kingdom.Photo by Mariia Shalabaieva on UnsplashFacilitating spending of over 100 cryptosUsing the Binance app, tourists visiting Bhutan can use dynamic or static QR codes in order to complete secure transactions via participating merchants in real time. The system supports users in spending over 100 cryptocurrencies to pay for goods or services, including hotel stays, tour guides and entrance fees to touristic sites. Payment using these digital assets will be settled instantly in Bhutan’s sovereign currency, the Ngultrum (BTN), with that settlement facilitated by DK Bank. Binance also asserted that the initiative facilitates inclusion and innovation by enabling small businesses in remote areas to accept crypto and in that way, to go digital. Bridging ‘cultures and economies’Binance CEO Richard Teng said that the initiative not only advances the use of crypto in the tourism sector, it also sets a precedent for “how technology can bridge cultures and economies.” Teng added:“This initiative exemplifies our commitment to innovation and our belief in a future where digital finance empowers global connectivity and enriches travel experiences.” Damcho Rinzin is also of the opinion that the initiative adds value beyond just being a tourism-related payment system. He stated:“This is more than a payment solution – it’s a commitment to innovation, inclusion, and convenience.” Binance described the new payment system as the first of its kind to offer end-to-end crypto-based payments at a national level, in a fully integrated manner. It added that previous systems established elsewhere had limitations and that by offering real-time confirmations, near-zero fees and a regulatory-compliant bank handling settlements, this system overcomes past limitations. Early adopterWhile Bhutan appears to have established a world-first with this system, it is no stranger to being innovative related to crypto. The kingdom has amassed a Bitcoin holding with a value in excess of $1 billion. It has collaborated with Bitcoin miner and Bitcoin mining equipment manufacturer Bitdeer on crypto-related ventures. In January it was announced that the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), a special administrative region within Bhutan, is moving forward with plans to hold Bitcoin, Ethereum and BNB, a digital asset that was created by Binance back in 2017, within its strategic reserve. Bhutan’s early interest in crypto hadn’t gone unnoticed by Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ). Last November, CZ commented on the X social media platform, in response to the news that Bhutan had accumulated in excess of $1 billion in Bitcoin, that many countries will use Bitcoin as a strategic asset going forward. The following month he visited the kingdom, meeting with the King of Bhutan.  During a panel discussion at Token2049 in Dubai in April, CZ commented that Bhutan is already advanced in its efforts to implement a national Bitcoin strategic reserve.

KuCoin Ups Compliance via Mandatory KYC

KuCoin Ups Compliance via Mandatory KYCKuCoin, the Seychelles-headquartered global cryptocurrency exchange, has unveiled plans to strengthen its Know Your Customer (KYC) system by introducing mandatory identity checks. In an official announcement on Wednesday, KuCoin stated that this upgrade aims to ensure compliance with global anti-money laundering (AML) regulations. Additionally, other available services for existing non-KYC users include redemptions at KuCoin’s staking and lending hub, KuCoin Earn, and exchange-traded funds’ redemption.Johnny Lyu, the CEO of KuCoin, explained the KYC process, stating: “A complete KYC process requires users to provide their name, identification number, and identification photo, and undergo facial recognition.” Lyu emphasized that KuCoin carefully verifies customer identification and collects the necessary data in compliance with the laws and regulations of applicable jurisdictions. He added: “Typically, we require customer identification information including information on the customer’s name and further identifiers such as a physical address, date of birth, and national ID number.”Risk profile data collectionIn accordance with regulatory requirements, KuCoin also collects additional information regarding a customer’s business and risk profile. He further highlighted that KuCoin’s KYC policy is designed to align with regulations in applicable jurisdictions, as there is no unified global KYC regulation at present.KuCoin has also made it clear that the exchange does not support the United States KYC requirements based on their current or updated KYC rules. This new mandatory KYC update will impact a significant number of cryptocurrency users globally. In May, Dubai-based Bybit restricted non-KYC users from withdrawing more than 20,000 Tether (USDT) monthly. It has been reported that cybercriminals have taken advantage of KYC requirements, selling hacked and verified crypto accounts on the darknet for as low as $30 as of April 2023.
