Hong Kong’s first tokenized notes

This marks the first instance of a Chinese financial institution issuing a tokenized note in the region. Leveraging the power of blockchain technology, the notes were tokenized on the Ethereum blockchain. UBS announced the milestone development via a press release published to its website on Friday.

The Swiss banking giant has some expertise in this area, having first issued a tokenized fixed rate note in December 2022, recorded on a permissioned blockchain and established under English and Swiss law. On this occasion, the Hong Kong-issued tokenized notes will be compliant in terms of both Swiss and Hong Kong law.

The issuance of these tokenized notes involved a significant amount, with BOCI issuing 200 million Chinese yuan worth of notes, equivalent to approximately $28 million. The collaboration with UBS aims to simplify digital asset markets and products for customers in the Asia Pacific region, specifically by developing blockchain-based digital structured products tailored to their needs.

Ying Wang, Deputy CEO at BOCI, expressed enthusiasm for the digital transformation and innovative development of Hong Kong’s financial industry, recognizing the evolving digital economy in the region. Wang expressed the view that the development puts BOCI “at the forefront of innovation in technology finance and digital finance.”

She sees the UBS collaboration as a means of driving “the simplification of digital asset markets and products, for customers in Asia Pacific through the development of blockchain-based digital structured products, designed specifically for customers in Asia Pacific.”

Embracing digital assets

Hong Kong has been actively working towards establishing itself as a hub for cryptocurrencies. Paul Chan Mo-po, the Chinese autonomous territory’s Financial Secretary, has emphasized the region’s intention to embrace regulation in this domain. Despite recent fluctuations in the virtual asset market and the closure of certain virtual asset exchanges, Chan remains optimistic about the prospects of Web3 and believes it is the opportune moment to drive its advancement.

This month, Hong Kong lifted its ban on crypto retail trading and encouraged crypto exchanges to seek licenses within the region. The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) has introduced exchange guidelines, leading firms such as Huobi, OKX, and BitMEX to express their intentions to apply for licenses in Hong Kong. Furthermore, in light of the recent lawsuit filed by the SEC against Coinbase, Hong Kong legislator Johnny Ng extended an invitation to the exchange to establish a hub in Hong Kong.

The collaboration between BOCI and UBS is significant as unlike UBS’ previous tokenized note project which was established on a permissioned blockchain, this Hong Kong-based project is making use of Ethereum. By issuing tokenized notes on the Ethereum blockchain, these institutions are exploring the decentralized potential of digital assets and paving the way for further innovation in the Asia Pacific region.

China’s Bitmain Makes Plans to Unveil World’s First 1XJ/T Bitcoin Miner

China’s Bitmain Makes Plans to Unveil World’s First 1XJ/T Bitcoin MinerBitmain, the leading player in the cryptocurrency mining equipment business, is set to host the upcoming 2023 Global Digital Mining Summit (WDMS 2023) in Hong Kong, using the event as a springboard to launch its latest Bitcoin miner. The Beijing-headquartered mining equipment manufacturer set out its summit and equipment launch plans on Chinese social media platform WeChat on Monday.Photo by Dmitry Demidko on UnsplashIntroducing the ANTMINER S21With the theme “Empower the Bull Market, Mine with Timing,” the summit will aim to assist clients in strategically positioning themselves in the mining sector to reap the rewards of the next crypto bull market. During the event, Bitmain will introduce its latest research and development achievement — the ANTMINER S21 mining machine. The ANTMINER S21 is likely to take its place at the forefront of Bitcoin mining, given that Bitmain’s ANTMINER series has dominated the mining sector in recent years. Bitmain claims that with the S21, it is introducing a miner with unmatched computing power and efficiency, ushering the global mining industry into the 1XJ/T (Joules/Terahash) era.Ever greater efficiencyBitmain has consistently led the industry’s technological innovations, starting with the S9 model, which first broke the 100J/T barrier, to the S19 series with efficiency ratings of 34.5J/T, 29.5J/T, 21.5J/T, and 20.8J/T. The upcoming S21 is expected to continue this track record of ever greater Bitcoin miner efficiency. In addition to technological advancements, Bitmain is using the summit as a mechanism to offer benefits to attendees. The company will launch a customer points system, allowing clients to apply for credit limits for S21 miners based on their points, enabling them to mine first and pay later. Moreover, the points system will facilitate conversion of points into exclusive coupons for the ANTMINER S21.Hong Kong venueHong Kong has been chosen as the venue for this summit and that’s likely by design rather than by coincidence. Over the course of the past twelve months, the Chinese autonomous territory has been making huge strides in its efforts to become a center for blockchain and crypto-related business. In recent months, Hong Kong has announced several supportive blockchain policies, attracting a significant pool of Web3 talent. The summit will also feature keynote speeches from local government officials, indicating the willingness of the local administration to take every opportunity to further Hong Kong’s strategic objective of furthering crypto, blockchain, and Web3 in the city.Bitcoin mining has proven to be ruthless in its drive towards ever greater efficiency. This is playing out mainly on two different fronts. Firstly, in terms of the cost of the energy input. Miners continue to innovate in this area, to the extent that at this point, it’s difficult to remain competitive if an operation is not tapping into an energy source with a near zero input cost. This is being exploited by sourcing energy that is surplus to energy grid requirements, oftentimes renewable energy, that would otherwise be wasted. The second major factor is the efficiency of the miners themselves. Entities that gain early access to the latest generation of miners from Bitmain and other mining equipment manufacturers immediately become more efficient than the other mining outfits that they compete with to unlock Bitcoin mining rewards on the Bitcoin network.

Bitget pledges $10 million to empower women in Web3

In a bid to foster gender diversity and inclusivity within the blockchain industry, cryptocurrency exchange Bitget has committed $10 million to invest in women-led startups in the Web3 and blockchain sector. Blockchain4HerThe announcement, made at the Web3 Hub Davos event on Tuesday, a part of the World Economic Forum 2024, highlights Bitget's initiative in promoting equality in a rapidly advancing sector. Bitget's research reveals a stark gender bias within the blockchain sector, with only 6% of startup funding directed towards female-led projects. Bitget’s Blockchain4Her project has been established as a direct consequence, in order to address this imbalance. Blockchain4Her has been designed to provide crucial support, mentorship and recognition to women in the industry. The initiative will include tailored incubation programs, pitch competitions exclusively for women-founded startups and the Women in Blockchain Summit & Awards, aimed at acknowledging outstanding achievements by women in the blockchain space. Recognizing the need for comprehensive measures, Bitget aims to confront the gender disparity by creating a nurturing environment through these multifaceted efforts. By offering specialized support for female entrepreneurs, the initiative aims to encourage greater involvement and leadership roles for women in the blockchain space.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashIndustry ambassadorsAs part of the Blockchain4Her program, Bitget plans to invite industry leaders to serve as ambassadors, supporting gender diversity in the blockchain industry. These ambassadors will play a crucial role in advocating, engaging and driving positive changes, fostering an inclusive environment for women in the blockchain sector. Bitget's commitment to addressing gender disparity in the blockchain industry is further underscored by its recent report on Web3 venture capital funding by gender. The report, published on Jan. 11, revealed that less than 7% of VC funding in the industry went to female-led startups, emphasizing the need for comprehensive measures to increase inclusiveness and accessibility for women in the blockchain sphere. The company is itself leading from the front on the issue, with Gracy Chen as managing director, one of the few crypto exchange platforms headed up by a female executive. Blockchain4YouthIt’s not the first time that the company has embarked upon a corporate social responsibility-themed project. It follows Bitget's earlier commitment to nurturing talent through the “Blockchain4Youth” initiative, which was announced in May of last year. The $10 million initiative set out to serve the objective of “empowering and inspiring younger generations to use Web3 and crypto tools to create and engage in a decentralized space.” It focuses on providing courses through Bitget Academy, hosting university lectures on Web3, incubating innovative projects by young entrepreneurs and organizing hackathons for individuals under 30 to identify promising leaders. A by-product of Blockchain4Youth also involved the company commencing to invest in Indian blockchain startups in November. Bitget's Blockchain4Her initiative represents a significant step towards fostering a more equitable blockchain space. By championing inclusion and diversity, Bitget not only contributes to a fairer industry but also supports the sustainability and growth of the broader technology sector.
