Bakkt targets business expansion in Asia

Web3 & Enterprise·January 26, 2024, 3:58 AM

Bakkt Holdings, a software as a service (SaaS) and API platform for owning and trading cryptocurrency, has unveiled its plans for an extensive expansion into Asia and other crypto-friendly international jurisdictions.

Focus on Hong Kong and Singapore

According to a recent press release, Bakkt has broadened its footprint into two additional Asian markets, namely Hong Kong and Singapore. This strategic expansion aligns with the company's key objectives for 2024.

Data from South Korean Web3 advisory and research firm Tiger Research suggests that Asia is poised to become the epicenter of the global crypto landscape within the next five years.

In particular, Singapore and Hong Kong have emerged as dominant forces in the Asian crypto landscape. Their well-defined regulations, favorable tax structures and status as international financial hubs have attracted major players in the crypto industry.

The announcement emphasizes Bakkt's commitment to making cryptocurrencies more accessible globally. The company envisions that crypto has the potential to enhance financial inclusivity and connect communities within the global economy. CEO Gavin Michael expressed excitement about the opportunities these regions present, highlighting the company's dedication to reaching millions of people through its crypto services.

Broader global expansion

Bakkt's international expansion is not limited to Asia. Additionally, the company is targeting Latin America. Brazil, Argentina and Mexico lead the way in the adoption of crypto assets in Latin America.

The digital assets solutions firm has successfully established crypto trading and on-ramp capabilities in Brazil and Guatemala, adding to its existing operations in Argentina and Mexico.

Furthermore, Bakkt has plans to establish a presence in the United Kingdom and Australia in the coming months.

The decision to expand into these specific jurisdictions is influenced by the rapid growth of the crypto economy and the regulatory clarity observed in these regions. Despite global market fluctuations and recoveries, certain countries continue to welcome crypto-related businesses with robust regulatory frameworks.

In collaboration with Bakkt Holdings, Hapi and SogoTrade have launched new crypto trading capabilities, expanding their offerings across Asia, Europe, North America and South America. Hapi, a stock trading platform, has extended its crypto trading services to Brazil, Guatemala and Spain, deepening its relationship with Bakkt. On the other hand, SogoTrade, a digital brokerage, has initiated crypto trading in Hong Kong and Singapore, marking the beginning of its foray into Asian markets.

Bakkt, established in 2018, is focused on providing institutional-grade custody, trading and on-ramp capabilities. The company positions itself as a partner for sustainable, long-term crypto involvement. The firm was established with Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the owners of the New York Stock Exchange, having a 66.7% controlling interest in the company.

Bakkt's strategic expansion into diverse international jurisdictions, including the Asian region, underscores its intention to enable global platform accessibility, together with its belief in the transformative power of cryptocurrencies within the financial landscape.

Euroclear takes stake in Marketnode entering Asian market

Euroclear, a Belgium-based financial services company that specializes in post-trade services relative to the clearing and settlement of securities, has announced that it has invested in Singaporean digital market infrastructure firm Marketnode. The investment, which the firm announced via a press release published to its website on Oct. 17, is the company’s first in the Asian market. Established with a distributed ledger technology (DLT)-based financial infrastructure, Marketnode offers its services via two distinct platforms. The company claims that through its Gateway platform it offers a one-stop issuance, data, workflows and tokenization services.  Meanwhile, Fundnode streamlines fund transactions, processing and record-keeping, while using blockchain technology in doing so. Euroclear’s CEO for the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, Philippe Laurensy, set out the company’s thinking in making this strategic investment, stating: “Partnering with Marketnode demonstrates our shared commitment to developing a new generation of funds market infrastructure by leveraging Euroclear’s global footprint, established fund infrastructure and digital capabilities. This first strategic investment in Asia also reinforces the region’s importance to Euroclear’s positioning and business growth. We are excited to join Marketnode’s pioneering journey in the rapidly growing area of digital assets and support the company’s international service expansion.”Photo by Thomas Somme on UnsplashProminent backersMarketnode is backed by Temasek and the Singapore Exchange Group (SGX), having been established in 2021 as a joint venture by the two firms. Notable financial firms such as Citi, HSBC, Deutsche Bank and State Street joined the pilot phase of Marketnode’s Fundnode platform in 2022.  Back in May, HSBC doubled down on its involvement, leading Marketnode’s Series A investment round. HSBC also partnered with Marketnode and Singaporean bank UOB in 2023, in the build-out of an end-to-end, issuance-to-distribution wealth management product infrastructure, run on blockchain rails. That project formed part of Project Guardian, a collaborative initiative led by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), designed to explore tokenization and network interoperability. Marketnode CEO Rehan Ahmed spoke about what this latest investment means for the company. He stated: “Euroclear’s global connectivity, operational expertise and market-leading position as a trusted financial market infrastructure will catalyse the growth of Marketnode’s platforms, especially Fundnode.” Ongoing blockchain interestWhile this may be Euroclear’s first foray into the Asian market, it’s not its first step into the world of blockchain and tokenization. The European clearinghouse launched a tokenized securities issuance service in 2023. The Digitally Native Notes (DNN) service enables the issuance, distribution and settlement of fully digital international securities, running on R3’s Corda blockchain. The first DNN was issued using the system by the World Bank, raising €100 million to finance its sustainable development activities. Earlier this month, it emerged that Euroclear, alongside the World Gold Council and international law firm Clifford Chance, had collaborated on a pilot project led by real-world asset (RWA) tokenization firm Digital Asset. The project concerned itself with the tokenization of UK bonds (gilts), Eurobonds and gold, using the Canton Network protocol.

Coti plans transition to Ethereum layer-2 network in 2024

Coti plans transition to Ethereum layer-2 network in 2024Israeli blockchain developer Coti plans to introduce a scalable, privacy-focused Ethereum layer-2 protocol in 2024. This strategic move aims to extend Coti’s privacy-centric features to a wider audience within the Ethereum ecosystem.Photo by Zoltan Tasi on UnsplashIncorporating ‘garbled circuits’Taking to the X social media platform on Wednesday, Coti unveiled its plan to transition from a standalone protocol to an Ethereum layer-2. The centerpiece of the project, which Coti has termed “Coti v2: a privacy-centric Ethereum L2,” is a cryptographic method known as “garbled circuits.”Garbled circuits are a cryptographic primitive that enables two or more parties to evaluate an arbitrary Boolean circuit securely, without revealing any information beyond the output, all while using a constant number of communication rounds. This innovative approach enables the processing of transactions without exposing sensitive information and data, aligning with the platform’s commitment to privacy.Having originated in the 1980s, garbling protocols have evolved into a crucial element of privacy-preserving technologies, excelling in scenarios where confidential data needs to be part of a computation without revealing the information itself.Focusing on privacyCoti CEO Shahaf Bar-Geffen emphasized the significance of this privacy-oriented protocol, stating:“Sensitive data transmitted as public information on a blockchain is a bug, not a feature.”Bar-Geffen highlighted the protocol’s ability to prevent sensitive data from being exposed to competitors, partners and clients engaged in transactions on Coti’s chain. The CEO elaborated on how garbling protocols differentiate Coti v2 by facilitating transactions and smart contract executions where details remain private between involved parties. The Coti CEO emphasized the critical role of such privacy features in decentralized finance applications, where transaction confidentiality is as essential as transaction integrity. Coti claims that other platforms focusing solely on anonymity for privacy may face regulatory challenges and might not provide a compliant foundation for the broader ecosystem.Targeting specific use casesCoti envisions its protocol catering specifically to use cases demanding advanced privacy provisions in finance and healthcare. Currently designed for enterprises, Coti’s existing protocol enables the management of blockchain-based products such as custom-branded tokens, wallets, website integrations and fiat on-and-off ramps. In a blog post on Medium, the blockchain startup outlined that in addition to privacy, v2 will enable smart contracts, EVM compatibility and Solidity programming, alongside the features currently offered by v1. Notwithstanding these new features on the v2 product, the company confirmed to The Block that in respect of Coti’s original Cardano-based product, “Coti’s work with Cardano continues. We have a project built there called Djed, and that will continue to remain on Cardano.” Djed is an ADA-backed stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar. The anticipated release of Coti v2’s developer net in the second quarter of 2024 signals a move towards realizing the potential in advancing Ethereum’s privacy standards. As a layer-1 protocol, Coti presently contributes to Web3 applications by providing digital infrastructure, including tools for wallets, tokens and payment modules, with a total value locked of $31 million. The upcoming integration as a privacy-centric layer-2 positions Coti as a key player in enhancing Ethereum’s capabilities and fostering a more secure and confidential blockchain experience.
