Animoca Brands partners with Saakuru Labs to bolster Web3 gaming

Metaverse gaming company Animoca Brands has recently announced a strategic partnership with Saakuru Labs, aiming to drive the adoption and integration of blockchain technology within Saakuru Labs' ecosystem. The collaboration is expected to bolster the expansion of the Web3 gaming industry, particularly in Southeast Asia, where the partnership officially kicks off. The initiative involves the incorporation of Web3 games developed with the Saakuru Protocol into the Animoca Brands ecosystem.

 

Gasless transactions

Animoca Brands will play a crucial role by providing gaming titles to its partners, while Saakuru Labs will facilitate Animoca Brands' expansion efforts in Southeast Asia. Developers stand to benefit from access to accelerated development processes and gasless transactions.

 

Gasless transactions are particularly significant in regions like Southeast Asia, known for lower-income demographics. The market has shown a keen interest in blockchain technology and Web3 games, indicating promising growth potential. With gasless transactions, developers can seamlessly integrate critical functionalities into their gaming titles, including infrastructure components.

Transition to Web3 gaming

The Saakuru Protocol, known for its consumer-centric L2 infrastructure, enables major integrations of Web3 components into traditional gaming segments. This ensures a smooth transition from traditional gaming to Web3 gaming, enhancing the overall gaming experience.

 

Yat Siu, Executive Chairman of Animoca Brands, emphasized the pivotal role of gaming in the evolution of the Internet and open metaverse, highlighting Southeast Asia's potential to lead in Web3 technology adoption.

 

Jack Vinijtrongjit, CEO of Saakuru Labs, underscored the platform's capability to offer seamless engagement with multiplayer gaming titles without latency or transaction fees.

 

The partnership between Saakuru Labs and Animoca Brands aligns with Saakuru Labs' recent collaboration with cloud computing infrastructure platform Aethir, aimed at enhancing blockchain gaming through GPU infrastructure. Notable partners of Animoca Brands, including GameGPT, W3GG and GameFi.org, have already expressed their commitment to adopting the gasless protocol.

 

Experts believe that gaming presents an ideal avenue to accelerate blockchain technology adoption and advance Web3 gaming principles. With gaming becoming a mainstream form of entertainment, seamless integration of technology is crucial for user acceptance. The outcome of the Animoca Brands and Saakuru Labs partnership is anticipated to manifest results in the coming quarter or by the end of the year.

Singapore Bank Opens Branch in the MetaverseSingapore’s OCBC Bank has made its debut in the Metaverse with the opening of OCBCx65Chulia in Decentraland, a virtual platform that uses blockchain technology. It is designed after OCBC Bank’s red logo, “a nod to the bank’s rich heritage,” the bank said in a statement.Reaching a larger and younger audienceOCBCx65Chulia represents a new way to connect with the younger generation, the bank added. “With the Bank’s arrival in the Metaverse, customers gain an additional access point that also represents a new way to engage with the younger crowd,” it said.The bank aims to tap into this emerging technology to reach a larger audience, said Peter Koh, Head of Group Technology Architecture at OCBC Bank.“Many have doubted the purpose of the Metaverse. Though a nascent and evolving space that we are still working to understand, the Metaverse remains one of the newer ways to make a connection. We are ready to tap on these, as they emerge, to reach a larger audience. At the same time, through experimentation and collaborating with an industry player, our younger colleagues can learn and develop themselves,” he said.GamificationIn the third quarter of 2023, OCBCx65Chulia will involve gamification, the bank said. This enhancement will come from the winning ideas of a group of Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) Diploma in Interaction Design students who won the associated hackathon held in February 2023. The bank also collaborated with Web3 firm Memotics, an expert in emotive and social spaces through digital architectural design.Broader banking interestOCBC Bank, which opened its doors in 1932, is the second-largest in Southeast Asia by assets, according to Forbes. It is not the first bank in Singapore to venture into the Metaverse. Last year, DBS partnered with decentralized gaming virtual world The Sandbox to create an interactive Metaverse experience called DBS BetterWorld, which also forms part of its sustainability agenda.In February of last year JPMorgan became the first bank to enter the metaverse. At the time, it launched its virtual Onyx Lounge within Decentraland’s Metajuku Mall. The lounge featured a portrait of JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, a spiral staircase and a dynamic roaming tiger.It also took the opportunity to release its “Opportunities in the Metaverse” report, in which it estimated a trillion dollar metaverse opportunity over the next few years. The metaverse has seen a plethora of well known corporations enter the space in recent times, including Gap, Adidas, PwC, Verizon and Nike.OCBC Bank’s move to the Metaverse represents a new era of banking where technology is used to reach a larger audience, especially the younger generation. With the Metaverse still being a nascent and evolving space, it is a new way to connect, engage, and experiment with the digital world.The gamification element in OCBCx65Chulia also shows how banks are exploring ways to make banking more interactive and fun. It will be interesting to see how other banks and financial institutions will follow suit and use the Metaverse to engage with customers and provide innovative services in the future.

Thai regulator takes action against deceptive crypto ads

In an effort to safeguard crypto investors from falling prey to misleading advertisements, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Thailand has intensified its scrutiny of promotional campaigns within the crypto sphere.  Broker agent eventsOn April 29, the Bangkok Post reported that the SEC has raised concerns regarding the potential violation of local regulations through introducing broker agent (IBA) events. These events, the SEC clarified, may breach regulations as IBAs are only permitted to promote digital token services to deter speculation on cryptocurrencies, categorized as high-risk assets. IBAs, acting as local conduits for partner digital asset exchanges, typically earn commissions by onboarding clients within a specific market. Such practices are common for exchanges or brokers that don't directly operate in certain markets. Deputy Secretary-General Anek Yooyuen conveyed the commission's unease over crypto exchanges offering preferential treatment to onboard users. Yooyuen stated: "When operators organise sales promotions by offering rewards to entice people to use the service, this could encourage use of the service without considering the investment risks. This is especially the case for cryptocurrencies.”Photo by Than Diep on UnsplashWarning of consequencesHe cautioned that failure to adhere to these guidelines would result in “punishment according to the law.” While cryptocurrency exchanges are legal in Thailand, they must secure local approval. Notably, last month, Thailand even greenlit asset management firms to launch private funds, offering Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) exclusively to institutional and ultra-high-net-worth investors. Nonetheless, the country recently prohibited the sale of cryptocurrency lending products and mandated that exchanges prominently display risk warning messages. International regulatory trendThis move by the Thai SEC mirrors actions taken by regulators in other major crypto markets. For instance, the United Kingdom's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) issued 450 alerts for illegal crypto ads in 2023 alone. Similarly, Spain’s principal securities market regulator, the National Stock Market Commission, denounced fraudulent crypto asset promotions in November 2023, emphasizing companies’ obligations to adhere to local laws. Thai advertising guidelines mandate businesses and advertisers to substantiate the “facts” presented in their campaigns, failing which could lead to legal repercussions. A recent incident provides a case in point. Hackers hijacked advertisements on Etherscan, redirecting users to phishing sites aimed at draining crypto wallets. Scam Sniffer, a blockchain investigation firm, attributed the widespread phishing campaign to the inadequate oversight by advertisement aggregators. The company made the following statement on the matter: “Etherscan aggregates ads from platforms like Coinzilla and Persona, where insufficient filtering could lead to exposure to phishing attempts.” The wallet drainer scam involves enticing users to counterfeit websites and coercing them to link their crypto wallets, enabling scammers to siphon funds into their own wallets without user authentication or consent. This is not the first time that the authorities in Thailand have homed in on crypto-related advertising. In August 2023, the southeast Asian country’s Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES) outlined that it had engaged with social media firm Meta, owner of Facebook, informing it that its response to the proliferation of fraudulent platform ads relative to crypto had been inadequate.

South Korea maintains single-bank policy for crypto exchanges

South Korean financial regulators have decided, at least for the time being, to maintain the current policy requiring cryptocurrency exchanges to partner with only one bank, according to a report from the Seoul Economic Daily.Photo by POURIA 🦋 on UnsplashDominance and money laundering concernsA government official cited concerns that allowing multiple banking relationships could potentially strengthen market dominance by leading platforms and increase money laundering risks. Regulators plan to revisit the issue after monitoring new developments following upcoming regulations that will permit institutional participation in the crypto market. This decision runs counter to a recent proposal put forward by the People Power Party (PPP) ahead of the presidential election that seeks to eliminate the one-bank-per-exchange requirement. Bizwatch reported that while the crypto industry initially supported the removal of this restriction unanimously, opinions have recently diverged among market participants. Divided industryMajor exchanges offering Korean won-based trading are mostly against the potential policy change. Except for Upbit, the country's largest platform, competitors express concern that modifying the rules could weaken their existing banking relationships if more financial institutions choose to partner with the market leader. Conversely, crypto-only exchanges, which cannot offer Korean won trading services, generally favor eliminating banking restrictions. These platforms believe relaxed regulations could create more opportunities to establish banking partnerships. Under current rules, virtual asset service providers must secure real-name accounts from a local bank to offer Korean won trading, placing those without such accounts at a competitive disadvantage. Banks also want changeKorean commercial banks align with crypto-only exchanges in supporting the easing of banking regulations. Jung Jin-wan, CEO of key financial institution Woori Bank, recently called for allowing multiple banks to serve individual crypto exchanges. He argues that the current one-bank-per-exchange system not only undermines systemic stability but also limits customer choice. While an official from a crypto-to-fiat exchange acknowledged the need for eventual reform of the one-bank-per-exchange system to improve customer options and market development, they also pointed out that industry stakeholders hold different views depending on their position in the market. The official said that dominant platforms perceive minimal practical benefits from permitting multiple banking relationships.
