OKX collaborates with Polygon Labs on layer-2 network launch

Web3 & Enterprise·November 16, 2023, 12:22 AM

Seychelles-incorporated OKX, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, has collaborated with blockchain development firm Polygon Labs to unveil the testnet for its latest zero-knowledge layer-2 network, named “X1.”

Introducing “X1”

The company announced initial details on X1 via a press release published on Tuesday. This Ethereum-based ZK network has been constructed using the Polygon Chain Development Kit (CDK), with OKX playing a pivotal role as a core contributor to the CDK. Substantial engineering resources are being invested by OKX to strengthen the Ethereum scaling solution.

The new network will serve to bolster the utility of OKX's native token, OKB. OKB will be used for X1’s gas fees. There has been a lot of chatter about the utility of exchange tokens following the collapse of FTX, as that platform was over-reliant on its native token in propping up the exchange. Similarly, critics are speculating that a comparable dynamic may be at play at Binance, relative to its native token BNB.

Likely buoyed by news of this development, OKB observed a 10% unit price increase on Tuesday. However, that move has retraced downwards in the meantime.

ZK proof technology

X1 has been designed with ZK proofs, a method through which one party can convince another that a particular claim is true without disclosing details of the claim itself. In this way, X1 ensures high security and scalability while mitigating transaction costs. The network seamlessly aligns with Ethereum, facilitating the secure deployment of EVM-based dApps and connectivity with a wide array of smart contracts, wallets and tools. OKX underscores X1’s status as its new native network.

Chief Innovation Officer of OKX, Jason Lau, expressed optimism about X1, deeming it integral to the firm’s efforts in guiding users into the realm of Web3. Lau emphasized the scalability and accessibility of X1, especially for developers who can leverage it to construct user-friendly Web3 applications while maintaining interoperability with other networks.

The collaboration with Polygon Labs marks another milestone in the evolution of Polygon’s CDK. Launched in August, the CDK enables the development of layer-2 blockchains on Ethereum, emphasizing zero-knowledge proofs. Networks deployed using the CDK gain the ability to connect to a shared ZK bridge, fostering interoperability.

Sandeep Nailwal, co-founder of Polygon, underscored the significance of X1’s adoption of Polygon CDK technology, envisioning a future where CDK-deployed chains interoperate and coexist within a larger network of ZK-powered layer 2s in the Polygon CDK ecosystem. The CDK has gained traction, with various Layer 2s, including Immutable zkEVM, IDEX, Palm Network and Astar zkEVM, currently in development using this technology.

Industry trend

A trend is developing among crypto exchange platforms and their involvement in establishing layer two networks. Earlier this year, U.S. crypto platform Coinbase introduced the Base network, an Ethereum layer-2 network that focuses on offering a safe, low-cost and developer-friendly mechanism to build on-chain.

Last week, it emerged that another leading U.S.-based crypto platform, Kraken, is on the lookout for a development partner to enable it in building out its own layer-2 blockchain network. According to those reports, it’s understood that Kraken is considering partnering with Polygon Labs, Matter Labs or the Nil Foundation.

As this OKX-Polygon Labs collaboration progresses, the industry will continue to observe how X1, with its innovative technology stack and seamless integration with Ethereum, contributes towards broader Web3 development.

dtcpay shifts exclusively to stablecoin-based payments

dtcpay, a regulated and licensed digital payment services provider headquartered in Singapore, has announced that it is changing direction, and adopting a stablecoin-only digital payments model. Phasing out Bitcoin, EtherThe company set out details of its new stablecoin-only approach in a series of posts on X on Dec. 3. dtcpay will phase out support for other cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ether by the end of 2024. It will then transition to the exclusive use of stablecoins, starting with Tether (USDT) and Circle’s USD Coin (USDC). Additionally, FDUSD, a U.S. dollar stablecoin issued by Hong Kong’s First Digital, and Worldwide USD (WUSD), a stablecoin which was developed by the Worldwide Stablecoin Payment Network (WSPN), a Singapore-based project, will be supported.Photo by CoinWire Japan on UnsplashVolatility issuesdtcpay cited the volatility of non-stablecoin cryptos as being an issue for payments. Volatility is driving the company’s plan to concentrate solely on stablecoins. Outlining its rationale further, the company stated: “By transitioning to focus dtcpay’s #DPT services purely on #stablecoins, we are setting the stage for the future of global, digital payments. This move is designed to provide our customers with a more reliable, scalable, & secure payment experience.” A significant portion of the firm’s transaction volume is already stablecoin-based. On that basis, the move can be viewed as aligning with the preferences of its current user base to a large extent. Originally established in 2019 by Alice Liu, Band Zhao and Sam Lin as Digital Treasures Center Pte. Ltd., the company later rebranded as dtcpay. In August 2022, the firm was awarded a full Major Payment Institution (MPI) license by the Monetary Authority of Singapore. In 2023, the company collaborated with Singaporean data-sharing platform PlatON and Chinese payments firm Allinpay, to launch a payments system using point-of-sale terminals which accepted Bitcoin, Ethereum and USDT. Asian expansiondtcpay has set out its objective as aiming to unify payment methods across Asia for the benefit of merchants and consumers alike. Last year, it identified Hong Kong and Dubai as locations of particular interest relative to the company’s expansion plans. In October, it furthered its international presence with the opening of an office in Kuala Lumpur. In an effort to make further in-roads into the payments sector, dtcpay announced a strategic partnership with Visa in September. The integration allows dtcpay to gain access to Visa’s global network of 130 million merchants across 200 countries. As part of the partnership, the company is rolling out its dtcpay Visa Infinite card, enabling users to convert digital currencies to fiat at competitive rates. In 2023, the company raised $16.5 million in a pre-series A funding round led by real estate development company Pontiac Land Group, which is controlled by Singaporean billionaire Kwee Liong Tek.

Haru Invest executives arrested for $750M crypto embezzlement

The joint virtual asset crime investigation unit of the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office announced the arrest of three executives from South Korean cryptocurrency yield platform Haru Invest, according to a report by local news agency Yonhap. They are accused of embezzling cryptocurrencies valued at over 1 trillion Korean won ($750 million).Photo by niu niu on UnsplashFraud lawsuitThis development comes after approximately 100 investors filed a fraud lawsuit in June against the executives of Haru and Delio, another Korean crypto lending firm.  The three leading executives of Haru, one aged 44 and the other two aged 40, are facing fraud charges for failing to return cryptocurrencies deposited by around 16,000 customers.Misleading promotionsInvestigations uncovered that Haru Invest was offering misleading promotions for its products. Despite assurances that it utilized a risk-free, diversified investment strategy to manage user assets, Haru Invest predominantly allocated the majority of these assets towards concentrated investments from March 2020 to June 2023. Haru Invest had garnered attention from crypto investors, promising an annual return of up to 12%.  Subsequently, on June 13, Haru halted the withdrawal of digital assets without prior notice. The platform is currently in the midst of bankruptcy proceedings.  Delio, having allocated some of its assets with Haru, also came under public scrutiny that same month when it ceased withdrawals just a day following Haru's questionable action.
