Conquering the Japanese anime market

As part of this strategic venture which was announced on Tuesday, Animoca Brands Japan has acquired equity shares in Cool Cats Group. Cool Cats is a U.S.-headquartered global character brand. It entails Cool Cats and Cool Pets NFT collections, notable for their distinctive and colorful cat designs.

In addition to this, Animoca’s digital experience label, KLKTN, has acquired NFTs from all three of Cool Cats’ collections on the secondary market. Notably, this NFT purchase took place through San FranTokyo, KLKTN’s virtual “decentralized city,” which is known for its focus on licensed anime and Web3 intellectual property.

Daisuke Iwase, CEO of Animoca Brands Japan, highlighted that the partnership goes beyond business growth. According to Iwase, it is about cultural exchange, understanding and delving into what makes Japan’s digital and artistic realm globally appealing. He emphasized their commitment to creating more opportunities for the Cool Cats IP’s growth through Animoca Brands Japan and San FranTokyo.

Accessing Web3 intellectual property

Robby Yung, CEO of Animoca Brands, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, telling The Block that it revolves around building Web3 intellectual property. He emphasized the company’s excitement about collaborating with an iconic Web3 IP holder like Cool Cats to explore the potential of Web3 products and traditional Japanese media products, including manga, to engage the community.

The partnership also introduced several strategic initiatives that are set to roll out. One of the key initiatives is the creation of a “Cool Cats Manga,” which will blend the world of Cool Cats with Japan’s renowned manga tradition. This manga will be crafted by a Japanese manga artist, promising a unique fusion of creative elements.

Japanese Cool Cats brand expansion

Another significant aspect of the partnership involves expanding the Cool Cats brand within Japan. Animoca Japan and San FranTokyo will work collaboratively to promote the Cool Cats IP through various channels. They are also committed to establishing new connections for Cool Cats with prominent organizations in the Japanese entertainment and intellectual property sectors, enhancing the brand’s presence in the country.

The narrative of the Cool Cats IP will be seamlessly integrated into the virtual city of San FranTokyo. This initiative will encompass interactive e-figurine drops and align with the marketing efforts of other iconic Japanese IPs, creating a vibrant digital ecosystem within the city.

David Taing, Co-Chief Operating Officer of KLKTN, expressed their dedication to Japanese and Web3 IP, emphasizing the importance of forging a path forward in the Web3 space. They are committed to bringing together diverse worlds, styles, ideas, industries and technology to drive collaboration to new heights, shaping the future of web3.

The strategic partnership between Animoca Brands Japan, KLKTN and Cool Cats Group represents a significant step toward embracing Web3 in the Japanese anime market, not just in terms of focusing on business growth but also in aiming to bridge cultures, bringing together the rich traditions of Japanese manga and the innovation of Web3.

Gate Ventures, Boon Ventures launching $20M crypto fund

Gate Ventures, the investment arm of Gate.io, a global cryptocurrency exchange with its origins in China, has gotten together with Thailand’s Boon Ventures and Movement Labs, to launch a $20 million fund aimed at supporting projects that utilize the Move programming language, as well as interoperability with the Ethereum ecosystem.  Accelerating Move-based blockchain adoptionMovement Labs is a developer of modular Move-based blockchains. A press release published on PR Newswire on Oct. 13 outlined that the firms intend to direct the fund towards a number of key areas. Firstly, its objective will be to accelerate the adoption of Move-based blockchain solutions. Secondly, the fund will be directed towards supporting projects which enhance security and performance in decentralized networks. A further objective is the extension of support to projects which bridge Move and Ethereum virtual machine (EVM) ecosystems. The final key objective has been set out to drive innovation in Web3 infrastructure and applications. Gate Ventures Managing Partner Kevin Yang claimed that the $20 million fund “marks a significant milestone in [the company’s] mission to drive forward-thinking solutions in the Web3 ecosystem.” Yang added that in collaborating with Movement Labs and other forward-thinking entities within the Web3 sector, the company is “paving the way for the future of decentralized technology.”Photo by Nino Steffen on UnsplashMentorship & hackathonsWeb3 startups supported by the fund will be given access to a mentorship program, while hackathon events will also be organized. Furthermore, there will be an opportunity for selected startups to participate in a research grant program relative to blockchain interoperability. Gate Ventures garnered attention within the industry recently, with the announcement in August that it had entered into a partnership with Abu Dhabi’s Blockchain Center. That collaboration has led to the establishment of Falcon Gate Ventures, a $100 million Web3 innovation fund.Last month, the company participated in the Series A funding round of Kroma, an Ethereum layer-2 network project. While interoperability is singled out as a key objective of this fund, Movement Labs has been working towards that goal recently. Last week, the firm appointed an omnichain interoperability protocol project, LayerZero, as an interoperability provider. It’s envisaged that the partnership will enable developers using the Move programming language to create decentralized applications that can run across various blockchain networks, including EVM. While Facebook parent company Meta developed the Move programming language, Movement Labs has worked towards developing its use further. Earlier in the year, Movement partnered with Aptos Labs, a firm that was founded by ex-Meta employees that has built out a network based on Move, in another effort to bring about blockchain interoperability relative to EVM and non-EVM networks. A spokesperson for Movement Labs told Cointelegraph that “the ultimate goal is to create an integrated blockchain environment where developers can build across platforms without sacrificing security or performance.” Back in April, Movement raised $38 million in a Series A financing round which was led by Polychain Capital. At the time, Movement Labs Co-Founder Rushi Manche said that he and his co-founders “started building Movement to increase the velocity of innovation in crypto where the next Facebook can be built on-chain by developers who do not have the resources for large development teams and expensive auditors.”

Bit Origin makes first purchase following DOGE treasury announcement

Bit Origin, the Nasdaq-listed (BTOG) pork processor turned crypto mining infrastructure firm, has acquired 40.5 million Dogecoin (DOGE), the company’s first purchase of the world’s largest memecoin by market cap since it announced that it was establishing a Dogecoin treasury. In a press release published on July 17, the Singapore-headquartered company with operations in the United States, Canada and China, set out that it would become the “first publicly listed company on a major US exchange to accumulate Dogecoin as a core asset.”Photo by Kanchanara on Unsplash$500 million treasury fundingThe firm outlined that it had entered into agreements with accredited investors, implicating the sale of $400 million in Class A ordinary shares in the company. An additional $100 million unlocked via convertible debt brought funding for its Dogecoin treasury to $500 million. Jinghai Jiang, Bit Origin’s CEO and Chairman, asserted that “what started as a joke has evolved into a globally liquid asset with a payments utility.” Jiang asserted that very few digital assets match the settlement speed and scale of community that Dogecoin offers. X Money potentialIn particular, he singled out the potential use of DOGE for X Money, a new payment system that is in the process of being established by Elon Musk’s X social media platform. Alongside many proponents of the cryptocurrency, Bit Origin is hoping that Musk will implement the use of DOGE to power X money. Jiang added:“In an age of broken institutions, Doge embodies a shared culture of optimism and resilience that transcends existing political and financial systems.” On social media, the company outlined that it believes in “Dogecoin not just as a meme, but as a future payments backbone.” Having utilized the services of Chardan Capital Markets as a placement agent, the company has already completed an initial closing of $15 million under the convertible debt facility that has been established.  On July 21, Bit Origin published another press release, detailing the acquisition of 40,543,745 DOGE with the memecoin holding having been purchased at an average acquisition cost of $0.2466 per DOGE.  Nearing inflection point for paymentsCommenting on the development, Jiang stated:“From our experience in mining, we understand the tradeoffs that define proof-of-work systems. We see Dogecoin’s utility potential for micropayments nearing an inflection point, driven by renewed developer activity and broader institutional interest in tokenization.” Dogecoin emerged in December 2013 having been developed by Jackson Palmer and Billy Markus as a joke. The project borrowed much of its code from Bitcoin. Despite having originated as a joke, the project has developed a sizeable community. The digital asset currently holds a market capitalization of $40.5 billion, according to CoinMarketCap data.  Bit Origin rebranded from China Xiangtai Food Co., Ltd. in April 2022. Up until that point, it had been involved in the pork processing business. The company pivoted to crypto mining, partnering with MineOne on a Wyoming mining facility in the United States. The facility was ordered to be shut down by the former Biden administration on the basis of it being a national security risk to have a Chinese project located within a mile of a U.S. Air Force base that houses nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Bitget believes that crypto loans have been gaining popularity in recent years, with the overall digital lending sector surpassing $8.5 billion in 2022 and experiencing a compound annual growth rate of 20.5%, as reported by Global Market Insights.Despite the overall growth in the digital lending area, the crypto loan sector faced significant setbacks in 2022, particularly with the troubles surrounding centralized crypto lending services. Major firms like Celsius, BlockFi, and Voyager Digital suffered collapses and bankruptcy, raising concerns about the trustworthiness of such services in the future.Bitget, however, is confident in its Crypto Loans product, emphasizing that it has streamlined the loan process to ease user onboarding. The amount users can borrow is determined by the market value of the collateral staked, and the loan is automatically disbursed with a specific interest rate. Borrowers have the flexibility to utilize the funds as needed and adjust the collateral based on their requirements.Swift loans processIt also has the option to repay the loan before or at the predetermined deadline. To further encourage user adoption, Bitget promises support for withdrawals and a swift review process for loan applications. The feature is expected to provide added convenience and ease of use for users.Bitget’s Managing Director, Gracy Chen, highlighted the advantages of the Crypto Loans product, noting that users can now stake less-demanded coins and obtain loans in more liquid assets for investment purposes. The platform’s flexible borrowing and repayment mechanism is designed to accommodate the needs of all users, ensuring convenience and accessibility.Notably, Bitget has been expanding its presence in the crypto market. In March, the platform acquired a controlling stake in BitKeep, a crypto wallet that has been rebranded as Bitget Wallet. Additionally, Bitget unveiled a $100 million venture fund in April, following a $10 million investment from Dragonfly Capital. In May, it announced the launch of its Blockchain4Youth program, recognizing the importance of the younger demographic in achieving crypto mass adoption. As Bitget ventures into the crypto loan market, it’s aiming to go one further than previous crypto lending providers who have largely failed, to provide a secure and user-friendly platform for borrowing and lending digital assets. The success of the product will depend on user trust and confidence, especially given the setbacks experienced by those other players in the sector in the past. Nonetheless, with its growing user base and strategic investments, Bitget is certainly showing some potential relative to making a mark in the cryptocurrency loan market.
