Ragnarok Origin driving up revenue

This upswing in revenue can be primarily attributed to the successful launch of Ragnarok Origin, an MMORPG mobile and PC game that debuted in Southeast Asia on April 6, 2023. Another contributor was the introduction of Ragnarok Origin in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau, alongside Ragnarok X: Next Generation’s performance in Korea.

Gravity’s reputation as a prominent player in the gaming industry has been solidified through its creation of the popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) Ragnarok Online. This flagship game draws its inspiration from a series of comics bearing the same name, which weave together elements from Norse mythology.

Upcoming release plans

Looking ahead, the game publisher has plans to bring a variety of IP-based games to players worldwide. First, Ragnarok V: Returns is gearing up to enter its closed beta test (CBT) phase in South Korea on August 17. Meanwhile, Japanese gamers can anticipate the launch of White Chord, a character-collecting RPG mobile game, set to debut on August 29. This creation comes from the collaborative efforts of Yulong Games, a Chinese mobile game developer, and Gravity Games Alliance (GGA), Gravity’s Japanese subsidiary.

Drawing on its remarkable achievement in Southeast Asia, Ragnarok Origin is now gearing up for a forthcoming launch in Central and South America, scheduled for the fourth quarter of this year. Additionally, fans in Vietnam can look forward to the release of Ragnarok M: Eternal Love, an MMORPG mobile game, slated to arrive in 2024.

Blockchain initiatives

Gravity’s ventures into the realm of blockchain technology also deserve attention. In this regard, Ragnarok Landverse, an MMORPG blockchain PC game, is poised to undertake its second round of CBT during the third quarter of this year. The game sets its sights on a broader launch in the latter half of 2023, encompassing regions like Southeast Asia (excluding Thailand and Indonesia), the Middle East, India, Africa, and Oceania.

Furthermore, the anticipation mounts for the global launch of Ragnarok Poring Merge NFT, a time-effective RPG blockchain mobile game, projected to make its debut in the fourth quarter of this year. Another captivating prospect is Ragnarok Monster World, a Web3-based RPG blockchain game for both mobile and PC platforms. Developed by Singaporean company Zero X And, known for its expertise in blockchain game and solution development, the game utilizes NFT technology and is earmarked for release in 2024.

Circle Considers Issuing Stablecoin in Japan

Circle Considers Issuing Stablecoin in JapanCircle, the US-headquartered payment services company and stablecoin issuer, is considering issuing a stablecoin in Japan following the implementation of new regulations on stablecoins.Jeremy Allaire, Co-Founder and CEO of Circle, expressed his interest in exploring partnerships in Japan due to the significant potential of the market under the new rules.Photo by Su San Lee on UnsplashGrowing importance of stablecoinsIn an interview with CoinDesk Japan recently, Allaire highlighted the growing importance of stablecoins in cross-border trade, foreign currency transactions, and global commerce. He believes that Japan, with its recently established framework for the use of overseas stablecoins, has positioned itself as a pioneering country in this regard. Allaire described the stablecoin bill as the Japanese government’s and the Financial Services Agency’s most significant achievement. The revised Payment Services Act in Japan recognizes stablecoins backed by legal tender as an “electronic payment method” and allows for their issuance. However, stringent rules are in place for stablecoin issuers. These include the requirement for stablecoins to be pegged to the yen or other legal tender and the guarantee of redeemability at face value for holders. Only licensed financial institutions, such as banks, registered money transfer agents, and trust companies, will be authorized to issue stablecoins.Breaking into AsiaAllaire emphasized Circle’s interest in establishing partnerships within Japan, a country he recently visited. Circle has already obtained a Major Payment Institution (MPI) license in Singapore, enabling the company to offer various digital payment services, cross-border money transfers, and domestic money transfer services. The Japanese market has witnessed major financial institutions exploring stablecoin initiatives. Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation (MUFJ), for instance, announced its plans to launch its own stablecoin platform named Progmat last month. MUFJ also entered into a partnership with Japanese blockchain interoperability solutions provider, Datachain, recently. It’s thought that the move will facilitate both parties in undertaking further work on stablecoin-related initiatives.Circle’s consideration of issuing a stablecoin in Japan underscores the company’s recognition of the country’s regulatory advancements and the potential for stablecoin adoption. As stablecoins gain further traction globally, Japan’s new framework positions it as an important market for Circle and other players in the industry. It’s not just Japan that highlights the need for further stablecoin development. A new policy proposal was published in Hong Kong earlier this week that made a point of urging the Hong Kong authorities to issue its own Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin. The objective of such an initiative would be to compete on an international basis with leading US dollar stablecoins such as Circle’s USDC and USDT/Tether. By being proactive in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, Circle could head off rising potential challenges such as that suggested by these stablecoin researchers in Hong Kong. The partnership opportunities in Japan align with Circle’s mission to facilitate efficient and secure digital transactions, and it will be intriguing to observe how the company navigates this emerging landscape in the months to come.

Korea Exchange sets the stage for security token trading

Korea Exchange sets the stage for security token tradingStarting next year, South Koreans may have the opportunity to trade security tokens, as the Korea Exchange (KRX), the sole securities exchange operator in the country, has officially begun preparations to establish a security token market. The Busan Digital Asset Exchange (BDX), slated for launch next year, is expected to play a pivotal role in spearheading the growth and development of this emerging security token market.Photo by Tierra Mallorca on UnsplashSeeking approval from financial regulatorsAs reported by local news outlet Busan Ilbo, KRX applied to the FSC last month for registration as an innovative financial service under the financial regulatory sandbox scheme. On Nov. 19, the FSC approved the creation of pilot markets for investment contract securities and non-cash trust beneficial certificates. KRX’s recent initiative is a follow-up to this development. The financial regulator is set to make a final decision after holding a main committee meeting to review KRX’s application.Investment contract securities and non-cash trust beneficial certificates represent two distinct types of security tokens. Investment contract securities provide a means for fractional investments in real-world assets (RWAs). This can include a diverse range of assets such as artworks, music copyrights, beef and carbon credits, allowing investors to own a portion of these assets. On the other hand, non-cash trust beneficial certificates function as secondary investment instruments. These certificates enable individuals to invest in financial products that themselves have invested in security tokens, offering an indirect pathway to participate in the security token market.Fractional investments on the horizonVarious industries are poised to benefit from the emerging digital market, especially platforms focused on fractional investment in artworks. Companies like Yeolmae Company, Art Together and Seoul Auction Blue are keen on this opportunity and have applied to the FSS for permission to register security tokens. Upon receiving regulatory approval, these platforms plan to accept subscription requests, enabling investors to participate in the art market in a more accessible way.The development of security token markets is expected to positively impact BDX, which is currently seeking an operator. Initially, when BDX’s operation plan was unveiled in September, it excluded security tokens due to regulatory constraints. However, with KRX now involved, it’s more probable that the Busan exchange will feature security tokens as major trading assets. Experts believe the success of these token exchanges will largely depend on the quality and appeal of the underlying assets.A local securities industry official emphasized the significant role of the security token market in enhancing the stature of Busan as a blockchain hub. The growth of this market is seen as pivotal in boosting the value and utility of BDX. The official noted that BDX’s appeal to investors would increase if it offered a diverse range of underlying assets or unique security tokens. This development could mark a significant turning point for Busan in the blockchain industry.
