Animoca Indicates Fund Interest From Console Makers

Web3 & Enterprise·May 17, 2023, 12:37 AM

The head of Animoca Ventures has said that Web3 gaming is attracting the interest of veterans of the gaming world as well as that of “key Japanese console makers.”

Animoca Ventures is a subsidiary company of Hong Kong-headquartered Web3 gaming and NFT firm, Animoca Brands. In a conversation with The Block recently, James Ho explained that although Web3 gaming has seen a short to medium-term downtrend when using the pricing of gaming-related tokens as the metric, the Animoca Ventures lead is seeing interest coming from “some of the best, most profound veterans in gaming.”

Proof of interest

Ho elaborated that there are a host of examples that back up his claim. He referred to FunPlus’s investment in global cross-platform play-and-earn games developer and publisher, Xterio. FunPlus itself is a Switzerland-headquartered independent games developer and publisher with offices and operations in China, Singapore, Canada, Spain, and the United States. Xterio raised $40 million in a funding round led by FunPlus in August of last year, with funding going towards building out its platform alongside further game development.

Ho also cited Square Enix, a Japanese gaming conglomerate that has shown an interest in blockchain-based gaming in recent years. In April, it announced that it was tripling down on blockchain by partnering with Web3 platform Elixir. The objective of the collaboration is to generate visibility and adoption of Web3 gaming among traditional gamers.

It’s also understood that Chinese tech giant Tencent has had a games studio under its group of companies which is believed to be building a blockchain-based first-person shooter game. Meanwhile, French video game publishing behemoth Ubisoft is an investor in Animoca Brands while also participating in a crypto-focused fund run by multi-stage technology investment platform, White Star Capital.

Console-maker intent

Most notable from Ho’s interview, though, is his claim that “key Japanese console makers” have an interest right now in pursuing Web3 gaming. That’s incredibly significant because if Web3 can conquer the consoles, it will truly be a mass-market affair at that point.

Ho elaborated: “Console makers never cared about free-to-play until it grew into multi-million users, what we’re seeing here now is some of the console makers with their deep pockets want to get involved in potentially a fund to stay on top of innovation… And that to me is a signal that they want to build something in this space in the near future, or not too distant future.”

The Animoca Ventures lead talked about “key Japanese console makers,” specifically in the context of interest expressed by them in investing in a second early-stage venture fund that Animoca is considering. The expression of interest has become evident to the company as it’s a response it received having touted the prospect of establishing the fund.

It’s interesting to hear that Animoca is actively pitching the notion of raising another fund, as it had been speculated that the firm has scaled down some of its existing funds. It’s understood that the firm was working on the new fund in November of last year, initially proposing a target of $2 billion. Once January came around, Animoca took the decision to scale that target back by half to $1 billion.

The company denies that reporting on the subject, suggesting instead that the original target of the fund was $1 billion from the outset.

Experts Gather at KBW 2023 to Explore the Future of Blockchain and Web3

Experts Gather at KBW 2023 to Explore the Future of Blockchain and Web3Blockchain and Web3 experts from around the world gathered at the Shilla Hotel in Seoul on Tuesday and Wednesday to attend Impact, the main conference of Korea Blockchain Week (KBW) 2023. There, they shared insights on the challenges faced by the blockchain industry as well as future prospects, especially their anticipation for South Korea’s role in shaping the industry’s landscape.Photo by Terren Hurst on UnsplashCurrent challengesAmong these experts was Sid Powell, CEO and Co-founder of Maple Finance; Stephen Richardson, Managing Director of Financial Markets and Head of the Asia Pacific region at Fireblocks; and Kelvin Koh, Co-founder and CIO at Spartan Group, who discussed the opportunities presented by bridging traditional finance with decentralized finance (DeFi) during a panel session on Wednesday. They mentioned the recent trending decline in DeFi transactions among institutional investors, which can be attributed to the DeFi industry’s fragmented infrastructure that can be difficult to understand. In order to rekindle investor confidence and interest, the industry must consider the integration of infrastructure and highlight the advantages of DeFi such as low costs, transparency, and liquidity to showcase its potential for financial gain.In a fireside chat on the same day, Jeremy Allaire, Co-founder and CEO of global fintech company Circle, acknowledged yet another mounting challenge facing the industry — the mass adoption of blockchain technology and Web3. However, the solution to this roadblock is not far out of reach, he said. Allaire predicted that by 2025, most cryptocurrencies, including stablecoins — cryptocurrencies that are pegged to a commodity or fiat currency to maintain a stable price — will have a legal foundation, thus paving the way for mass adoption.Suk Hwan Paul Kim, CEO and Vice Chairman of Grip Labs, and Archie Ravishankar, CEO of Cogni, also said that implementing user-friendly services and institutional entry will be a key strategy for persuading Web2 users to transition to Web3 platforms and encouraging mass adoption.Outlook for KoreaMeanwhile, several key figures expressed positive hopes for the pivotal role that Korea will play in the development of the Web3 ecosystem. In particular, Polygon Labs co-founder Sandeep Nailwal and COO Michael Blank pointed out that Korean companies, especially those in the gaming industry, are open to applying Web3 technology to their business projects, thus accelerating next-generation innovation in various fields like gaming, social media, and entertainment. Indeed, Polygon Labs’ own Korean partner firms recognize that the future of the Internet will rely on blockchain technology. In order to build a solid Web3 ecosystem, they said, three core values are of utmost importance — privacy, transparency, and openness. Fostering an environment that users can trust while freely interacting with others is the key, and Polygon Labs has vowed to contribute to doing so.Notably, Commissioner Caroline D. Pham of the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) was also in attendance, where she shared her thoughts on the proper regulation of virtual assets. She stated that it is essential to apply the safety measures we have learned from the past century of financial history to the future cryptocurrency industry, cautioning against a one-sided view that virtual assets are inherently bad.In drawing a comparison between the US and Korea, she stated that although the US possesses strong technical capabilities and is gradually adopting a more positive perspective on virtual assets, Korea is still ahead by a decade due to the fact that the general public is more open to embracing emerging technologies. Therefore, the future partnership between the US and Korea could offer valuable insights, not only in terms of economic prosperity but also in legal and regulatory aspects.

Alchemy Pay Enables Rupee Payments Through UPI

Alchemy Pay, a Singapore-based platform that supports fiat to crypto purchases across 173 countries using Visa, Mastercard, regional mobile wallets and domestic transfers, has announced that it now provides a rupee-denominated on-ramp using India’s UPI real-time payments system.Photo by rupixen.com on UnsplashIn a recent blog post, the fiat to crypto payments solutions provider outlined that it now has the capacity to more effectively on-ramp India’s 1.4 billion citizens by enabling domestic transfer payments to effect crypto purchases through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), a popular instant payments system in India. Processing domestic transactionsThe move means that Indian citizens can interact with the platform by way of simple, real-time domestic transfers, with a minimum purchase value of 1250 INR. First introduced in 2016, UPI has been wildly successful. In September 2022, the system recorded a monthly transaction volume of 6.7 billion transactions, representing a movement of $140 billion. The platform has partnered with 358 banks and continues to grow and expand its network. In Alchemy Pay’s home territory of Singapore, UPI has recently secured an integration with PayNow, a Singaporean secure funds transfer service. Referring to the PayNow/UPI integration in its blog post, Alchemy Pay is likely to be extending its UPI-based transfer service as a direct consequence. The payments facilitator claims that its plugin is “now being used by many wallets, DeFi, gaming and NFT marketplaces, as well as exchanges like OKX and LBank.”The Alchemy Pay platform has focused in particular on emerging regional real-time payments platforms. Within emerging markets it supports similar systems such as Pix, SPEI, GCash, Dana and OVO. As the Singaporean start-up puts it, ”simplifying the on-boarding process is crucial for the widespread adoption of cryptocurrencies and by enabling local payment options, Alchemy Pay makes the adoption by a growing number of users possible.”Off the back of this expanded service offering, the company is currently inviting developers of Web3 platforms and dApps to get in touch so as to enable them in adding its plugin and integrating its API. Importance of bridging crypto with fiatIn another blog post on Monday, Alchemy Pay underscored the importance of an ability to on/off ramp to and from the crypto ecosystem. The company points out that in its recent history, the crypto space has been a complex and intimidating environment to enter or exit to/from the conventional world. It claims to be playing its part in changing this.According to the firm, its available options of transferring fiat currency to a user’s credit card, savings card or bank account via SWIFT, IBAN or local bank transfer is far more seamless than what has been offered to crypto space participants up until now. These transfers can be effected in minutes, with the platform supporting 22 currencies and payouts facilitated in over 60 countries. The digital assets space doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Current generations were all born into fiat-based monetary systems and naturally enough, the overwhelming majority of wealth is tied up within traditional systems. While digital assets have garnered quite a bit of attention over the course of the past few years, the overall market capitalization of crypto, which stands at $1.2 trillion at the time of publication according to cryptocurrency data aggregator CoinGecko, is only a drop in the bucket by comparison with the wealth that exists within the conventional system. More seamless bridging in line with what Alchemy Pay is offering will be necessary for this space to have a realistic chance of conquering mass market adoption.
