VCs Say US Crypto Crackdown Opportunity for Asia

A couple of Hong Kong-based venture capitalists told Bloomberg TV in an interview that aired on Tuesday that the current crypto crackdown in the United States is a boon for Asia and particularly for Hong Kong in establishing itself as a global crypto hub.

Martin Baumann, Managing Partner and Co-Founder of CMCC Global, one of Asia’s first VC funds focused purely on blockchain and crypto, said that “Hong Kong has always been a financial capital of Asia and we believe in this location.”

Golden opportunity

While the fund has a global mandate, it believes that investor focus is shifting away from North America towards Asia. Baumann’s colleague, CMCC Global Managing Partner and Co-Founder Charlie Morris said that “the US has been quite negative from the regulatory perspective and it really seems to us that the US is shooting itself in the foot with a machine gun.”

Morris elaborated, stating that the US crypto crackdown is handing a golden opportunity to other world regions to lead on blockchain and crypto. Baumann chimed in to clarify that one third of all blockchain equity deals are currently being done in Asia. He maintains that most of the investment community in the West doesn’t appreciate the extent to which capital is being committed into the space by Asian entities.

Morris expanded further: “We see places like Hong Kong having a real opportunity at this point in time to bring those firms and entrepreneurs to the city.”

Launching $100M blockchain fund

Against that backdrop CMCC Global is launching a $100 million fund, where funding will be allocated to blockchain projects. Specifically the duo are targeting crypto and blockchain firms at Series A and Series B funding stages. Baumann believes that in tandem with the fact that there’s a lot of innovation emerging in Asia, “there’s plenty of capital sitting on the sidelines waiting for the right entry valuations to pull the trigger.”

While Baumann and Morris are majority stakeholders in CMCC Global, the Winklevoss twins (Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss) also have an equity stake in the business. Founders of the Gemini crypto exchange platform, they are investors alongside Hong Kong based Richard Li, who has a net worth estimated to be in the region of $4.6 billion.

VC investment into crypto slowed down considerably since the onset of the most recent crypto winter. However, that activity has still been ongoing, something that is entirely different to the 2018 bear market when investment came to a complete standstill. In April, CMCC partnered with Switzerland-based Syz Group with the objective of establishing a funding vehicle with a minimum $50 million fund earmarked for crypto-centric hedge fund investment.

Meanwhile, in speculating on the prospects of bitcoin, the CMCC duo expressed the view that double digit gains are well within reach. Morris envisages a Bitcoin unit price of $40,000 in 2023. From a long term perspective the CMCC co-founder suggested that “I can easily see us breaking all time highs and easily breaking $100,000 for bitcoin.”

Japan to implement crypto insider trading restrictions

According to a report published on March 31 by Nikkei, a Tokyo-based financial news outlet, the Japanese authorities are gearing up to categorize digital assets as financial products, while in the process broadening the scope of insider trading restrictions. While the publication didn’t cite a particular source, it reported that the Japanese Financial Services Agency (FSA) is expected to file a draft amendment related to the existing Financial Instruments and Exchange Act in 2026.Photo by M.S. Meeuwesen on UnsplashFrom payment to investment productCurrently, Japan’s Payment Services Act categorizes crypto assets as a means of settlement. That categorization looks at these assets from the perspective of a payment tool rather than considering them as investment products. The move is understood to be part of a broader effort to copper-fasten crypto sector oversight. Earlier this month, the Japanese cabinet approved a proposal that seeks to amend the Payment Services Act.  At the time, it had been suggested that the amendment would look to exclude crypto assets from being classified as securities, while also bringing about a reduction in the capital gains tax rate as it is applied to digital assets. It’s likely that crypto assets will find themselves in a distinct category, apart from securities like stocks and bonds. Crypto adoptionActivity related to crypto assets has been growing in Japan. 7.34 million active accounts were found to be responsible for crypto transactions in Japan in January. That amounts to a tripling in such crypto transaction activity over the course of five years. Japan enjoyed greater adoption at a very early stage in the global development of crypto. However, following the Mt. Gox crypto exchange collapse in 2014, which at the time accounted for the loss of 7% of Bitcoin’s supply, regulators responded by clamping down on the sector.  That situation led to greater investor protection for Japanese investors but it presented as a difficulty for Japan-based exchanges to compete globally with other exchange businesses overseas. A conservative stance taken by the FSA has also held back crypto exchange-traded fund (ETF) approval and adoption. Bitcoin ETFs were approved in the United States over a year ago. Earlier this month, Astar Network founder Sota Watanabe outlined that the current ruling party in Japan plans to remove crypto assets from a securities classification, alongside other changes which could potentially lead to the approval of crypto ETFs. The Liberal Democratic Party has also put forward crypto tax reforms that, if implemented, would see a 20% tax rate brought into effect where capital gains on digital assets are concerned. The finer detail with regard to the nature of insider trading restrictions as they will be applied to crypto assets has yet to be revealed. Nikkei speculated that such restrictions would likely be similar to those applied to conventional financial products. Last week, the Asia Web3 Alliance Japan, a crypto advocacy group, put forward a proposal to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that, if implemented, would see collaboration between the U.S. regulator and Japan’s FSA, its central bank and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The objective of the proposal is to bring about cross-border regulatory clarity related to the further development of the Web3 ecosystem in both Japan and the U.S.

Remixpoint raises $215M to buy Bitcoin, CEO to receive salary in BTC

Remixpoint, Inc., an energy management solutions provider that trades on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TYO:3825), has announced the raising of $215 million to finance its Bitcoin treasury while the company’s CEO has become the first public company executive in Japan to receive his entire salary in Bitcoin.Photo by Michael Förtsch on Unsplash3,000 BTC targetIn a statement published to X on July 9, the company outlined that it had raised ¥31.5 billion ($215 million). The proceeds will be entirely allocated to Bitcoin acquisition. The company is targeting the accumulation of 3,000 BTC.  As of June 16, the company held 1,051 BTC, valued at around $114 million. At today’s pricing, the funds raised would allow Remixpoint to buy a further 1,977 BTC. However, the firm warned that actual acquisition volume may vary depending upon Bitcoin pricing over a certain period of time, combined with the firm’s share price. Providing its justification for the funds raised, Remixpoint said that the decision reflected its “conviction in Bitcoin’s future,” a view that the company has formed following extensive internal discussion. Remixpoint initiated this treasury strategy in September 2024, compelled to do so due to concerns about the Japanese yen, with a desire to hedge against its depreciation. In addition to Bitcoin, the company has also bought altcoins such as Ether (ETH), Solana (SOL) and Dogecoin (DOGE). Japanese firms buying BitcoinRemixpoint is one of a growing number of Japanese firms to establish crypto-based treasuries. Japanese fashion retailer ANAP Holdings held 200 BTC as of July 8, with plans to acquire over 1,000 BTC by August. Publicly listed marketing business Agile Media Network stated in April that the company would make an initial purchase of ¥10 million worth of Bitcoin on a trial basis in an effort to determine if it's worthwhile to invest in the asset on a broader basis. Earlier this year, Japanese gaming firm Gumi announced plans to build up a Bitcoin treasury worth in the region of ¥1 billion. In recent months, SBC Medical Group, nickel processing firm S Science and textile manufacturer Kitabo have either added Bitcoin to their balance sheets or announced plans to do so. Japan’s standout Bitcoin treasury company is Metaplanet, a former hotel operator. Earlier this week, it emerged that the company aspires to build up a 210,000 BTC treasury. Furthermore, it plans to use its Bitcoin holding to buy cash-producing businesses, with a digital bank being one of its potential acquisition targets. On July 8, Remixpoint announced that it had taken the decision to pay the entire salary of its recently-appointed CEO, Takashi Tashiro, in Bitcoin. Tashiro will become the first Japanese CEO of a publicly-listed company to receive his salary in Bitcoin. Remixpoint said that it had taken this decision as part of a shareholder-perspective management outlook. In a tongue-in-cheek comment on X, market analyst Caleb Franzen said that "Now that the Remixpoint CEO is taking their salary in Bitcoin, I think Satya Nadella [CEO of Microsoft] will do the same any day now!" The emergence of crypto treasury firms has faced criticism. However, Elliot Chun, a partner at Architect Partners, asserted back in March that by 2030, a quarter of S&P 500 firms will have invested in Bitcoin.
