XPLA’s vision

“XPLA is a project working towards promoting new levels of fun in Web3 gaming and building an ecosystem based on a fair system of sharing rewards with users,” said Paul Kim, Team Leader at XPLA. “Through this partnership with PERPLAY, we are one step closer to fulfilling our Web3 philosophy, which is centered around the participants in our ecosystem.”

Rewards for everyone

The PERPLAY app runs on a Proof of Play (POP) algorithm that employs a rewarding mechanism that distributes tokens to users based on their game playtime and collection of tiered NFTs. PERPLAY users can earn $XPER and $PER token rewards by playing any mobile game — existing or newly downloaded — that they have registered in the PERPLAY app.

XPLA hopes to integrate this algorithm into its ecosystem to add a rewarding layer to various games on its mainnet, offering a unique and elevated gaming experience. The first of these games will be Com2uS Holdings’ popular mobile role-playing game (RPG) The Walking Dead: All-Stars.

“We see this partnership with XPLA as an opportunity to further strengthen the PERPLAY user ecosystem,” said Lim Jae-chung, CEO of PERPLAY. “Starting with The Walking Dead: All-Stars, we will bring the PERPLAY experience to various Web3 games on XPLA.”

In a related development, XPLA has partnered with Google Cloud, which will serve as a Volunteer Validator for its blockchain protocol. The collaboration with the cloud computing platform is expected to enhance the integrity of the XPLA network.

Taiko Labs Raises Funding to Build Ethereum-Equivalent zkEVM

Taiko Labs Raises Funding to Build Ethereum-Equivalent zkEVMTaiko Labs, a crypto startup focused on scaling the Ethereum blockchain, has successfully raised a total of $22 million in two funding rounds.According to a blog article published to the startup’s website on Thursday, the first funding round, a $10 million seed raise, was led by Sequoia China and concluded in the third quarter of 2022. The second round, a recent pre-Series A round, raised $12 million and was led by Generative Ventures, according to co-founder Daniel Wang.Photo by cottonbro studio on PexelsBroad investor participationNotable investors in the two rounds include IOSG Ventures, GSR, and GGV Capital, as well as angel investors like Patricio Worthalter, the Founder of the Proof of Attendance Protocol (POAP), Tim Beiko from the Ethereum Foundation, and Anthony Sassano, Co-Founder and COO of the decentralized virtual world, The Sandbox. Taiko Labs has not disclosed its valuation.Scaling EthereumThe primary focus of Taiko Labs is to develop a scaling solution for the Ethereum blockchain that closely adheres to Ethereum’s design and ideology. The company refers to its product as a Type 1 zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM).Vitalik Buterin, the inventor of Ethereum, emphasized the importance of Type 1 zkEVMs for scaling the Ethereum layer 1 in a blog post. Taiko Labs aims to extend Ethereum’s capabilities by sticking to the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) specification and leveraging its best properties, as explained by Matthew Finestone, co-founder of Taiko Labs.On Wednesday, Taiko Labs released its latest version, its alpha-3 testnet, Grímsvötn, marking a significant milestone on its path to a decentralized and Ethereum-equivalent ZK-EVM.Taiko backstoryThe journey towards Taiko Labs began when Daniel Wang and Matthew Finestone worked together at Loopring Foundation, a trading and payment protocol based on zk-rollup technology. Wang served as the founder and CEO of Loopring Foundation from July 2017 until November 2021, while Finestone worked as the head of business for three years.Wang initially intended to build a decentralized social network but encountered a major obstacle — the lack of infrastructure and scalability. This realization led to the birth of the idea for Taiko Labs.Wang commented on the funding milestone, stating: “We believe that we are now on the cusp of having a truly decentralized Ethereum-equivalent ZK-rollup. This is our core mission at Taiko and we are incredibly proud to partner with leading investors who share our uncompromising vision.”The successful financing rounds will enable Taiko Labs to ensure a successful launch of its mainnet. However, the company is considering raising additional capital, partly to establish an ecosystem investment fund that will attract decentralized applications (dApps) and developers to the ecosystem. In terms of organizational structure, Taiko Labs plans to follow in Ethereum’s footsteps. Wang told The Block: “We are going to quickly convert the organization into a non-profit one. Ideally, we’ll operate very similarly to the Ethereum Foundation.”These successful funding rounds provide a solid foundation for Taiko Labs’ future endeavors, and the company is aiming to make a meaningful impact on the global adoption of blockchain technology with its focus on scaling.

Aave v3 Launches on Metis Scaling Network

Aave v3 Launches on Metis Scaling NetworkMetisDAO confirmed on Tuesday that leading decentralized liquidity protocol Aave has been deployed on the layer 2 Ethereum-centric scaling platform.Photo by Joshua Sortino on UnsplashGiven the distributed nature of the teams behind decentralized networks and projects, it can be difficult at times to determine where project teams are based, albeit in the case of MetisDAO, according to LinkedIn, its primary location is Singapore despite having a Canadian Co-Founder and CEO.Aave’s move to ZK networksThe move comes following a vote taken by Aave’s user community, who voted in favor last month of a proposal to deploy the liquidity protocol on zero knowledge-based networks. In a social media post, the Metis team referred to the decentralized lending market going live on the network as “a new era of Decentralized Finance.”The development is significant for Metis, given that Aave is the third largest project in crypto based on the total value locked (TVL) metric. Within DeFi lending, it’s the biggest project in the sector, holding a TVL of $5.4 billion. One of the keys of Aave’s dominance is its multi-chain strategy. Metis marks the eighth network upon which it has been deployed. The others include Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Fantom, Harmony and Avalanche.Metis technical roadmapWhile there’s a lot of uncertainty as to how various crypto projects will pan out over the longer run, most agree that Ethereum is here to stay. Metis stands a good chance of contributing to that ecosystem over the long term as layer two scaling networks are likely to be part and parcel of the Ethereum environment for some time to come.Last month, the project set out a technical roadmap, detailing what the project has in store, while claiming that in general, 2023 would be a great year for Ethereum. Metis is a layer two network based on Optimistic Rollup architecture. It has grown into the third largest scaling network relative to Ethereum. The project plans to roll out Bedrock, a technical upgrade that will enable improved network security. Furthermore, it plans on bringing about consensus and execution separation. Also in its sights are faster deposit times, which the project claims, will enable better UX.Many DeFi networks are under scrutiny in terms of the centralized elements that they incorporate. Metis plans to make improvements in this regard, with the intention of decentralizing the sequencer pool. The project claims that “Metis Andromeda will be decentralized to the core.”Hybrid rollupsDemonstrating further ambition, Metis is aspiring to bring about hybrid rollups, combining the features of optimistic rollup architecture with zero-knowledge proofs. In a tweet, Head of Marketing and MetisDAO Co-Founder Kevin Li said that “by combining the best traits from both schemes, hybrid rollups will offer the unmatched scalability and EVM-equivalence of optimistic rollups, together with the censorship resistance and fast finality enabled by zero-knowledge proofs. The best of both worlds.”MetisDAO believes it adds value for users of its network through Aave’s offering, enabling them to borrow assets with less collateral via Aave’s High-Efficiency mode. Furthermore, the deployment makes for improved risk management through supply and borrow caps, and siloed borrowing, reducing the risk in the event of market contagion.

OKX Strengthens Partnership with Manchester City Football Club

OKX Strengthens Partnership with Manchester City Football ClubSeychelles-based crypto exchange OKX has announced the expansion of its sponsorship deal with Manchester City Football Club, the treble-winning English Premier League soccer champions. The announcement was made through a virtual reveal video featuring player avatars, presented at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium. News of the deal was also posted on the English club’s website on Friday. While the valuation of the deal remains undisclosed, the collaboration signifies a significant milestone for both parties. The new agreement, which spans multiple years, establishes OKX as the official sleeve partner on both the men’s and women’s first-team playing kits.Photo by Giero Saaski on UnsplashExtended partnershipUnder this extended partnership, the OKX logo will be prominently displayed on the sleeves of Manchester City’s playing kits, solidifying its position as a key sponsor. Additionally, OKX will retain its presence on the club’s training kit sleeve.City Football Group, the holding company that owns Manchester City and other soccer teams like New York City FC and Melbourne City FC, oversees the management and operations of the club.OKX initially became Manchester City’s official cryptocurrency exchange partner in March 2022. Subsequently, in July of the same year, the exchange secured a sponsorship deal to feature its logo on the front of the club’s training kit throughout the 2022/2023 season. At the time, the agreement was reported to be valued at over $12 million.OKX CollectiveIn February, OKX launched the “OKX Collective” alongside Manchester City players Jack Grealish, Rúben Dias, Ilkay Gündoğan, and Alex Greenwood. This immersive metaverse fan experience offered exclusive content and rewards, allowing fans to engage with the club in a unique way.OKX’s CMO Haider Rafique expressed satisfaction with the evolving partnership, stating: “Manchester City was our first official global brand partnership, and in just a year and a half, we have come a long way. We always intended to integrate with the sport and help the club lead on leaning into Web3. Fast forward fifteen months, we now have a metaverse, an NFT initiative, and a number of other new projects that we are excited about.”Additional sports sponsorshipsBesides Manchester City, OKX has also established partnerships with other prominent sports brands and athletes, including McLaren Formula 1, the Tribeca Festival, Olympian Scotty James, and F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo. While OKX’s partnership with Manchester City strengthens its global fan base, it’s worth noting that the sale of crypto derivatives, a product offered by OKX, was effectively banned by the UK’s financial regulator in January 2021. Consequently, OKX and other crypto exchanges have refrained from advertising such services in the country. As the Premier League clubs have collectively agreed to restrict gambling sponsorships on team shirts, there are concerns that similar restrictions may be imposed on crypto company sponsorships. However, any such developments are expected to be some years away, as the changes regarding gambling sponsorships are scheduled to take effect in the 2026/2027 soccer season.Marketing spend by crypto firms has sobered up quite a bit since the heady heights of the last bull run. However, OKX remains one entity which has been fairly consistent in continuing its marketing efforts regardless of market conditions.
