Bakkt targets business expansion in Asia

Web3 & Enterprise·January 26, 2024, 3:58 AM

Bakkt Holdings, a software as a service (SaaS) and API platform for owning and trading cryptocurrency, has unveiled its plans for an extensive expansion into Asia and other crypto-friendly international jurisdictions.

Focus on Hong Kong and Singapore

According to a recent press release, Bakkt has broadened its footprint into two additional Asian markets, namely Hong Kong and Singapore. This strategic expansion aligns with the company's key objectives for 2024.

Data from South Korean Web3 advisory and research firm Tiger Research suggests that Asia is poised to become the epicenter of the global crypto landscape within the next five years.

In particular, Singapore and Hong Kong have emerged as dominant forces in the Asian crypto landscape. Their well-defined regulations, favorable tax structures and status as international financial hubs have attracted major players in the crypto industry.

The announcement emphasizes Bakkt's commitment to making cryptocurrencies more accessible globally. The company envisions that crypto has the potential to enhance financial inclusivity and connect communities within the global economy. CEO Gavin Michael expressed excitement about the opportunities these regions present, highlighting the company's dedication to reaching millions of people through its crypto services.

Broader global expansion

Bakkt's international expansion is not limited to Asia. Additionally, the company is targeting Latin America. Brazil, Argentina and Mexico lead the way in the adoption of crypto assets in Latin America.

The digital assets solutions firm has successfully established crypto trading and on-ramp capabilities in Brazil and Guatemala, adding to its existing operations in Argentina and Mexico.

Furthermore, Bakkt has plans to establish a presence in the United Kingdom and Australia in the coming months.

The decision to expand into these specific jurisdictions is influenced by the rapid growth of the crypto economy and the regulatory clarity observed in these regions. Despite global market fluctuations and recoveries, certain countries continue to welcome crypto-related businesses with robust regulatory frameworks.

In collaboration with Bakkt Holdings, Hapi and SogoTrade have launched new crypto trading capabilities, expanding their offerings across Asia, Europe, North America and South America. Hapi, a stock trading platform, has extended its crypto trading services to Brazil, Guatemala and Spain, deepening its relationship with Bakkt. On the other hand, SogoTrade, a digital brokerage, has initiated crypto trading in Hong Kong and Singapore, marking the beginning of its foray into Asian markets.

Bakkt, established in 2018, is focused on providing institutional-grade custody, trading and on-ramp capabilities. The company positions itself as a partner for sustainable, long-term crypto involvement. The firm was established with Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the owners of the New York Stock Exchange, having a 66.7% controlling interest in the company.

Bakkt's strategic expansion into diverse international jurisdictions, including the Asian region, underscores its intention to enable global platform accessibility, together with its belief in the transformative power of cryptocurrencies within the financial landscape.

India tops global crypto adoption despite regulatory hurdles: Chainalysis report

India has once again emerged as the global leader in cryptocurrency adoption for the second consecutive year, according to the latest Chainalysis Global Crypto Adoption Index for 2024. Despite strict regulations, including high taxes and restrictions on foreign exchanges, India continues to see widespread participation in digital assets, showcasing resilience in the country’s growing cryptocurrency ecosystem.Photo by Jovyn Chamb on UnsplashIndia leads in crypto adoptionIndia ranked first out of 151 countries in the 2024 Chainalysis report, maintaining its top position from 2023. Indian investors have continued engaging with both centralized and decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms despite regulatory challenges such as the 30% capital gains tax and a 1% tax deducted at source (TDS) on crypto transactions. This activity highlights the country's strong interest in digital assets. India received $143 billion in crypto inflows from July 2023 to June 2024, placing second in the Central and Southern Asia and Oceania (CSAO) region behind Indonesia, which received $157 billion. CSAO as a whole accounted for $750 billion in crypto assets over the same period, making up 16.6% of global crypto activity. Offshore exchange restrictions and workaroundsIn December 2023, India’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) issued show-cause notices to nine offshore cryptocurrency exchanges, including Binance, Kraken and KuCoin, for non-compliance with anti-money laundering laws. The FIU also blocked access to these platforms for Indian users. However, many investors found ways to bypass these restrictions, continuing to access these exchanges via pre-downloaded apps. Despite these regulatory hurdles, Binance and KuCoin have since re-entered the Indian market after paying fines and complying with local laws. Binance settled a $2.25 million fine in June 2024, while KuCoin resolved a $41,000 penalty in March 2024. Indonesia’s rapid growth in cryptoIndonesia on the other hand has emerged as the fastest-growing crypto market in the CSAO region, climbing four places to third in the global rankings. The country experienced a nearly 200% year-over-year increase in crypto activity, driven primarily by retail investors seeking alternative investments such as meme coins. Indonesia received $157.1 billion in crypto inflows during the 12-month period, reflecting strong engagement with decentralized finance services. Broader regional trendsSeven of the top 20 countries in Chainalysis’ adoption index come from the CSAO region, including Vietnam, the Philippines and Pakistan. This growth is fueled by investment opportunities and an embrace of digital assets as new financial tools. Countries with lower purchasing power tend to have higher adoption rates, with retail-sized transactions making up a significant portion of activity.India’s resilient crypto marketDespite regulatory challenges, India’s crypto market continues to thrive. The government's strict policies have done little to dampen enthusiasm for digital assets. Chainalysis found that investors remained committed to crypto, even as the country enforces strict tax policies. India’s high adoption rate reflects strong demand and adaptability in the market. Future outlook for India’s crypto ecosystemIndia’s leadership in crypto adoption is expected to continue. The FIU is reviewing applications from more foreign exchanges, with at least two expected to be approved by the end of 2025. As the regulatory landscape evolves, clearer guidelines could encourage further growth and innovation in the digital asset space.

Huobi Rebrands as HTX to Mark Tenth Anniversary

Huobi Rebrands as HTX to Mark Tenth AnniversaryIn a move marking its 10th anniversary, Seychelles-registered cryptocurrency exchange Huobi has decided to rebrand itself as “HTX.”Rebranding confusionIn crypto-centric discussions on social media, the decision has sparked controversy and raised eyebrows, drawing comparisons to the now-defunct exchange FTX.The announcement of Huobi’s rebranding to HTX was made on Wednesday. According to the company, the new name is a combination of symbolic elements. The “H” represents the first letter of “Huobi,” the “T” is a nod to Justin Sun’s blockchain project Tron, and the “X” stands for the exchange itself.Alternatively, some interpret “HT” as a reference to the exchange’s native Huobi Token (HT), while the “X” symbolizes the Roman numeral for 10, commemorating the company’s 10th anniversary. Huobi’s new slogan accompanying the rebranding is “HTX, Just Trade It.”Before the official announcement, Huobi changed its social media account names to align with the new brand. The exchange’s Twitter handle is now HTX_Global, and its official Telegram group is named “HTXglobalofficial.” As of the time of writing, the website domain still retains the original Huobi name.Photo by Kate Trysh on UnsplashFTX comparisonsThe rebrand immediately drew attention on social media. In one of a range of similar comments, a user lined up the Huobi logo next to that of FTX and wrote: “I think I’ve seen this movie before.” Although a matter of speculation, there has been some chatter on social media in recent weeks, questioning the health of the Huobi business. It didn’t help the firm that in August, rumors swirled that some of the company’s executives were subject to an investigation by Chinese authorities. This isn’t the first time a crypto-related entity has seemingly borrowed part of its name from FTX. In January, the founders of the collapsed cryptocurrency hedge fund Three Arrows Capital announced plans to raise $25 million for a proposed crypto exchange called “GTX.” Huobi’s rebrand has amused some FTX creditors who had faced criticism from some in the crypto sector for wanting to resurrect the business while maintaining the same branding. In early August, Huobi refuted reports suggesting insolvency and the arrest of senior executives by Chinese authorities. Additionally, the exchange had previously been ordered to cease operations in Malaysia following regulatory actions by the country’s securities regulator in May.International marketing effortHuobi’s rebranding to HTX has undoubtedly stirred debate and curiosity within the cryptocurrency community. Justin Sun, an advisor to the project, stated at a media briefing at Token 2049 in Singapore that the HTX brand will be marketed towards Huobi’s international English-speaking users.Sun said: “It’s very hard for foreigners, Westerners, to pronounce ‘Huobi’… It doesn’t make any sense to them,” Sun said, explaining that the word Huobi means fire and coin in Chinese. “That’s why we rebranded as HTX for international branding.”As the crypto industry continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how this new identity will impact Huobi’s reputation and standing in the market. Regardless, the crypto world is known for its surprises, and Huobi’s marketing move serves as a reminder that the industry is in constant flux, filled with unexpected developments.
