Japan’s PM holds off on supporting Bitcoin as reserve asset

Policy & Regulation·December 30, 2024, 1:26 AM

Despite interest expressed by a Japanese lawmaker earlier this month for Japan to establish a strategic Bitcoin reserve, the country’s prime minister has declined to offer support for the idea.

Insufficient information

Japanese crypto media outlet CoinPost reported on Dec. 26 that the country’s prime minister, Shigeru Ishiba, refrained from endorsing the notion of a Japanese strategic Bitcoin reserve on the basis that he and his government lack sufficient information on the subject. With that, Ishiba feels that it’s “difficult for the government to express its views” on the matter.

The Japanese prime minister was prompted to offer his views on the subject having been queried by Japanese Member of Parliament (MP), Satoshi Hamada. During a question and answer session earlier this month, Hamada cited the United States and Brazil as examples of states that are currently considering the addition of Bitcoin as a reserve asset.

The Japanese lawmaker suggested that policymakers in those countries were leaning towards the consideration of Bitcoin as a hedge against economic risks, and that on that basis, he believed that the Japanese government should give the use of Bitcoin as a national reserve asset consideration. Hamada stated:

“I think Japan should follow the example of the United States and consider turning some of its foreign exchange reserves into crypto assets such as Bitcoin.”

Ishiba has responded by stating that his government lacks sufficient information relative to this “movement of introducing Bitcoin reserves that the United States and other countries are proceeding with.”

Additionally, the Japanese government maintains that stability and liquidity are of paramount importance when it comes to the country’s foreign exchange reserves. With those factors in mind, it believes that Bitcoin is incompatible due to its price volatility.

Unsustainable debt levels

Some proponents of Bitcoin suggest that it offers a way forward for countries that have developed an unsustainable level of debt. In an X post published on Dec. 27, Thomas Jeegers, chief financial officer (CFO) at Swiss Bitcoin-only app enterprise Relai, set out a case for Bitcoin on that basis. Jeegers outlined that the United States has a debt of $36 trillion, accounting for 120% of gross domestic product (GDP).

He describes the Japanese scenario as being considerably worse, where the country’s debt accounts for 200% of GDP. Jeegers forecasts that the trajectory is unsustainable, with debt having grown “far beyond manageable levels.” The Relai CFO warns that the financial world is at breaking point and “it’s not a matter of 'if' but 'when' the system buckles under its own weight.”

Earlier this month, investment manager VanEck published a report claiming that a strategic Bitcoin reserve could facilitate the U.S. in reducing its national debt by up to 36% by 2050.

Like Japan, Russia has also decided against a strategic Bitcoin reserve. Although Finance Minister Anton Siluanov pointed towards Bitcoin’s unit price volatility being an issue, he is open to reassessing the matter in the future.

In addition, the firm has followed up on March 4 with the publication of financial results for Q4 2023.Photo by Thought Catalog on UnsplashSealminer A1The company revealed on X that its inaugural crypto mining chip, known as the SEAL01, destined to drive the Sealminer A1 mining rig, was engineered utilizing four-nanometer process technology, a feat achieved in collaboration with a semiconductor fabricator. Bitdeer boasts that this chip exhibits a power efficiency ratio of 18.1 J/TH. At the heart of Bitdeer's latest achievement lies the SEAL01 chip, the culmination of years of dedicated research and development. By harnessing state-of-the-art technology and meticulous planning, Bitdeer aims to tackle the pressing challenges confronting Bitcoin miners, including skyrocketing operational costs and environmental implications. The company claims that the efficiency of the SEAL01 chip not only promises a shift towards more sustainable mining practices but also holds the potential to significantly reduce energy consumption, thereby bolstering profitability and return on investment for miners. "This powerful chip offers enhanced Bitcoin mining performance with minimized power consumption, leading to lower operating costs and a reduced environmental footprint for miners," Bitdeer affirmed in the X post. The firm stopped short of disclosing the launch timeline for its upcoming mining rig. On the financial front, Bitdeer disclosed its financial results for Q4 2023, on March 4. The company reported a total of 111,966,634 outstanding ordinary shares as of Dec. 31, 2023, including class A and class V ordinary shares. Additionally, Bitdeer revealed key operational metrics for Q4 2023, including total Bitcoin mined, power usage across its mining data centers, average cost of electricity and miner efficiency. Bitdeer's shares closed up 2.11% at $6.76 on Nasdaq on Friday, indicating a positive market response to its recent newly developed Bitcoin mining chip. However, trading outside regular hours, going into March 4, have seen the share price peak at $7.52, yet having retraced to $6.9 at the time of writing. That may indicate that investors are not particularly enthralled by the firm’s Q4 2023 results. Bitdeer emphasizes that the SEAL01 chip is engineered to meet the evolving demands of the cryptocurrency mining industry. As mining activities continue to gain traction and market dynamics evolve, the adaptability of hardware solutions becomes paramount. Bitdeer's strategic emphasis on innovation with the SEAL01 chip aims to pave the way for future advancements in cryptocurrency mining technology, ultimately fostering the growth and sustainability of the industry. Moreover, Bitdeer asserts that the newly developed chip enables it to optimize efficiency, stability and performance in anticipation of the upcoming Bitcoin halving event slated for April. Last month, the company’s founder Jihan Wu was installed as CEO, in a move that is understood to better position the company as it transitions to a growth phase.

China Performs Well as Global Crypto Industry Employment Surpasses 190,000

China Performs Well as Global Crypto Industry Employment Surpasses 190,000According to new data, the cryptocurrency industry has seen a remarkable surge in employment, with nearly 190,000 individuals currently working in the field as of July 2023, with China fairing particularly well despite its hostile approach to crypto. This figure represents a significant increase compared to pre-2020 employment statistics, marking the onset of the crypto frenzy. The data was produced via a report published by K33 Research, a Norway-based digital assets research and data analysis firm.Photo by Valentin Farkasch on UnsplashIndia leads in AsiaThe data highlights an over-representation of crypto workers in the Western world, with more than 50% based in North America and Europe. Within this figure, the United States alone accounts for 29% of the crypto workforce. In Asia, India emerged as the leading employer in the crypto industry, employing 20% of the regional workforce, primarily in developer-related roles. Surprisingly, despite China’s historically hostile stance on the crypto industry, it stands as the second-largest employer in Asia, employing 15% of the regional workforce. It’s also interesting that China has been found to account for such a sizable chunk of Web3-related employment when recent feedback from recruiters in Hong Kong suggest that the crypto licensing program rolled out in the autonomous Chinese territory has not yet resulted in a surge in employment. Recruiters maintain though, that this employment boost will come in due course. Most employment via exchangesDuring 2021, a period characterized by high prices and soaring company valuations, the crypto industry employed approximately 211,000 individuals, highlighting the industry’s rapid growth. Researchers from K33 found that around one-third of the crypto workforce is engaged in exchanges or brokerages, emphasizing the crucial role these entities play. Additionally, 26% of employees work for companies offering a diverse range of financial services related to cryptocurrencies.Interestingly, the study revealed that NFTs occupy only a small portion of the workforce, with only 6% of individuals involved in this field. On the other hand, 21% contribute their skills to blockchain protocols, analytics, and mining operations. The remaining 13% hold cryptocurrency-related jobs that do not neatly fit into any specific category. The researchers employed various methods, including LinkedIn searches, AI-assisted web searches, and manual mappings, to gather this data.Remote workingA notable trend in the crypto industry is the prevalence of remote work arrangements. Major crypto companies have opted for globally distributed workforces, capitalizing on jurisdictions with favorable regulations and lower tax rates. By establishing headquarters in these locations, but employing individuals remotely or establishing local offices worldwide, companies can reduce costs and eliminate logistical barriers. The significant growth in crypto industry employment reflects the expanding and maturing nature of the sector. As cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology gain wider acceptance, professionals from various backgrounds are entering the industry, contributing their skills to different sectors within the crypto ecosystem. The prevalence of remote work arrangements and the global nature of the industry allow talent to be sourced from around the world, transcending geographical boundaries. This upward trajectory in employment is likely to continue as the crypto industry evolves and continues to shape the future of finance and technology.
