Japanese Games Publisher Suspends Metaverse Downloads

Web3 & Enterprise·October 21, 2023, 3:39 AM

Japanese video game publisher Bandai Namco has taken the step of temporarily suspending downloads of its recently unveiled Gundam Metaverse, raising questions and concerns about a potential major leak within the project.

In an official announcement on Thursday (local time), the company expressed regret over the temporary suspension of client file downloads, stating that the firm is sorry that downloading the client files for the Gundam Metaverse has been temporarily suspended.

Recent game release

Gundam Metaverse was launched with the collaborative intention of Bandai Namco and Gundam fans, aimed at creating a community that contributes to future Gundam projects. The sudden halt to downloads came as a surprise, given that the game was released just this month.

The Gundam Metaverse was initially slated to be open for a limited time in Japan and the US. It featured an “Early Access” phase for a select number of users, which commenced on October 6, followed by the “General Access” phase available to the public starting on October 12.

During this time, visitors had the opportunity to immerse themselves in a 3D world inspired by the iconic Gundam anime. The virtual world included a store offering six distinct Gundam Plastic models, commonly known as Gunpla, and a space for digital live performances by artists affiliated with the Gundam series.

Suspected design file flaws

Bandai Namco has remained tight-lipped about the reasons behind the decision to cease downloads, leaving fans and observers speculating about potential issues with the project. Speculation was further fueled by rumors that circulated online, suggesting that the game’s downloads contained unencrypted design files related to specific models from “Gundam SEED Freedom.”

These rumors began circulating as early as mid-September when a Weibo user claimed to have shared images of the “Freedom Gundam” and “Justice Gundam” designs, scheduled to make their debut in “Gundam SEED Freedom.” This upcoming animated film is produced by Bandai Namco Filmworks and directed by Mitsuo Fukuda, with a release date set for January 26 next year, marking the 20th anniversary of the Gundam SEED franchise.

Given that Gunpla models were set to be released in tandem with the film’s screening in January, the alleged leak of design files would be a substantial concern for Bandai Namco.

Hong Kong news outlet HK01 reported:

“There were a large number of 3D model CAD [computer-aided design] files of Gundam models hidden inside [a download], including 2024-only 3D model CAD files.”

Metaverse vision

Bandai Namco set out its metaverse vision in March 2022 when it provided initial details on what it termed back then as its “Gundam Metaverse Project.” The project involved an outlay of $130 million for the company to get it off the ground.

At the time, Bandai Namco saw its entry into the world of the metaverse as an opportunity for it to be “connected with fans,” becoming a hub so that those connections could run more deeply and broadly and result in greater enjoyment for IP fans, partners, group employees, and society worldwide.

Bandai Namco’s decision to halt downloads remains a topic of intrigue that has left Gundam fans and industry observers eagerly awaiting further developments and clarifications from the gaming giant.

Japan’s ODX to commence digital securities trading in December

Japan’s ODX to commence digital securities trading in DecemberOsaka Digital Exchange (ODX) is set to commence security token trading with Ichigo’s real estate assets, marking yet another milestone in Japan’s evolving digital asset landscape.Photo by note thanun on UnsplashDecember 25 ‘START’ODX’s Proprietary Trading System (PTS), named “START,” is scheduled to commence operations on Dec. 25, as announced in a Nov. 20 statement. This development follows the approval from Japan’s Financial Service Agency (FSA) on Nov. 16 for ODX’s securities token proprietary trading system.A security token, essentially a digitized version of traditional securities, represents fractional ownership in real-world assets like equity, real estate, or company shares. ODX’s trading system aims to enhance liquidity and funding opportunities for securities token operations within the region, aligning with its broader vision of establishing a digital stock exchange to rival the Tokyo Stock Exchange.Established in 2021 by SBI Holdings and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMFG), ODX is poised to welcome Ichigo as its inaugural client on the START platform. Ichigo is a Japanese sustainable infrastructure firm based in Tokyo. Real estate is one of the sectors it is involved in, where it specializes in the renovation and improvement of existing buildings.Third security token launchThe real estate company has previously issued two security tokens and now plans to issue a new token, facilitating real estate investment opportunities for individuals. A company statement reveals that the new security token will invest in six strategically located rental residential properties with superior access to the city center. Bloomberg reported on Monday that Ichigo intends to sell approximately $20 million worth of securities backed by property investments, with trading set to commence on Dec. 25.The release of real estate-backed security assets will take place on Progmat, a Japan-regulated digital asset platform established in 2022 by Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) in collaboration with other Japanese banks. Progmat integrates blockchain technology with financial expertise to manage digital assets within the regulatory framework of Japan. As a consequence, MUFG will effectively be acting as custodian and security token issuer as part of this security token offering. SBI Securities will act as the lead underwriter of the project.Security tokens, subject to federal regulations, derive their value from external tradable assets and represent ownership in an enterprise or asset. The introduction of security token trading on ODX has the potential to enhance liquidity and streamline the investment process for individuals. However, with the initial offering of $20 million in securities, it is evident that Japan is cautiously exploring the demand for alternative forms of securities.SBI portfolio companyInitially, Japanese financial services conglomerate SBI Holdings had a 70% stake in ODX, with SMFG holding a 20% equity stake. Investment Bank Daiwa Securities and global financial services group Nomura made up the balance, with each having a 5% equity holding in the business. Those equity stakes have most likely been diluted as in September ODX confirmed that it had accepted equity participation from the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), the largest U.S. options exchange platform, private equity firm Virtu Investments and proprietary trading firm and global market maker Optiver Principal Strategic Investments (PSI).

Diamond Hands is a Japan-based company involved in providing Bitcoin-related products. It helps companies to integrate Bitcoin and lightning payments into their services. Based in Wilmington, Delaware, Fulgur Ventures invests in early-stage startups. It is particularly focused on Bitcoin and Lightning Network-related projects.Photo by David Edelstein on UnsplashBootstrapping brand awareness Fulgur Ventures is Blockstream’s largest shareholder. The objective is to bootstrap brand awareness within Japan using these partnerships with local companies. To that end, Diamond Hands CEO Koji Higashi will become Blockstream’s brand ambassador. It’s thought that efforts will be made going forward to further expand partnerships with local Japanese companies. Blockstream announced in a press release that it aims to drive adoption of self-custody technologies and Bitcoin layer-2 innovations within the East Asian country. Furthermore, it plans to drive adoption of real-world asset (RWA) tokenization. Commenting on the development, Blockstream Founder and CEO Adam Back stated:"With increased regulatory clarity and rising institutional interest in Bitcoin now is the moment for Blockstream to establish a direct presence in Japan, one of our most important markets." Back added that the company is looking forward to “empowering Japanese enterprises and individuals to fully harness Bitcoin as the foundation for a financial future that's secure, scalable and decentralized.” Tokyo office Another aspect to the expansion involves the opening of an office in Tokyo by Blockstream.  Adam Back is a Bitcoin OG who has often been the subject of speculation in attempts to identify pseudonymous Bitcoin founder Satoshi Nakamoto. Back proposed Hashcash, a proof-of-work-based system and forerunner to Bitcoin, in 1997. The Japanese corporate world has demonstrated its interest in Bitcoin in recent months, with local company Metaplanet launching an ambitious plan to acquire 21,000 Bitcoin by 2026, having adopted the Bitcoin playbook pioneered by American business intelligence and Bitcoin development company MicroStrategy. Blockstream’s investment arm, Blockstream Capital, has also been active in the market. Last month, the company invested $75 million into crypto custodian Komainu. Komainu is a joint venture between CoinShares, Ledger and Japanese global financial services company Nomura.  The same month, the company launched two institutional-grade Bitcoin investment funds. The funds, Blockstream Income Fund and Blockstream Alpha Fund, have been devised to cater to a growing demand from institutions for transparent, regulated and secure financial products. A third fund, Blockstream Yield Fund, is due to launch later this year. It will offer Bitcoin holders consistent, low-risk returns on their holdings. Blockstream was founded in 2014. In its earlier years, the company has served as a technology provider relative to the Liquid Network. In Core Lightning, it has developed a well-recognized implementation of the Lightning Network protocol.  To facilitate Bitcoin holders in terms of self-custody of the leading crypto asset, Blockstream developed Blockstream Jade, a hardware wallet built on open-source software. The device offers air-gapped functionality, meaning that users can perform transactions without connecting the device itself directly to the internet.
