Coinbase Acquires License to Enhance Crypto Operations in Singapore

US crypto exchange business Coinbase has reached a significant milestone in its Singapore operations by obtaining a Major Payment Institution (MPI) license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).

The achievement, announced by the firm via a blog post published on Sunday, represents a pivotal moment for Coinbase as it expands its digital payment token services in Singapore to serve both individuals and institutions. The issuance of the full MPI license comes approximately one year after Coinbase initially received in-principle approval from MAS.

Enabling broader service offering

The importance of this development lies in Coinbase’s ability to provide advanced services, not only to individual traders but also to institutional investors. Hassan Ahmed, the country director of Coinbase Singapore, stressed the significance of this full license, stating that it will play a crucial role in strengthening relationships with stakeholders, especially regulated entities like banks. The regulatory milestone is anticipated to further cement Coinbase’s presence in the institutional finance sector in the region.

Coinbase’s commitment to the Singaporean market has been evident in its continuous expansion initiatives. The company established a technology hub in Singapore last year, actively recruiting and training product managers and engineers specializing in Web3 technologies.

In May the firm extended its product offering to Singaporean customers, introducing fee-less purchases of the USDC stablecoin and introducing digital asset staking. Meanwhile Coinbase Ventures, the firm’s investment arm, has also demonstrated confidence in the region by investing in more than 15 Web3 startups within Singapore over the past three years.

 

Singapore earmarked for growth

Singapore has emerged as the focal point for Coinbase’s Asia-Pacific institutional business, owing to its progressive stance on cryptocurrencies and a robust Web3 ecosystem boasting over 700 Web3 companies. According to Coinbase’s surveys, 25% of Singaporeans perceive cryptocurrencies as the future of finance, and 32% have had some form of crypto asset ownership. These statistics underscore Singapore’s growing importance in the global cryptocurrency landscape.

Coinbase’s interest in meeting the demands of the local market is evident with the introduction of funding options like PayNow and the banks’ Fast And Secure Transfers (FAST) service, in addition to the integration of the Singpass onboarding system earlier this year.

Despite facing regulatory challenges, including a lawsuit from the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) accusing Coinbase of operating illegally, the exchange continues to explore avenues to grow and expand the business further. In August, Coinbase reported a significant improvement in its financials, with a narrower net loss and higher-than-expected revenue. This performance is reflected in its appreciating stock prices, which have more than doubled in 2023.

This move places Coinbase among a select group of just over a dozen firms licensed to offer digital payment token services in Singapore. Last month, institutional investor-focused AsiaNext was officially designated as a Recognized Market Operator (RMO) by MAS. The firm was building on previous success in Singapore, having acquired a Capital Markets Services (CMS) license from MAS in June.

That same month USDC stablecoin issuer Circle was awarded a full trading license. Other crypto firms to achieve licensing success in the city-state include Crypto.com and Blockchain.com.

Credit Saison launches $50M blockchain fund, deepening push into emerging markets

Credit Saison, one of the largest credit card issuers in Japan, is accelerating its global venture strategy with the creation of Onigiri Capital, a new fund targeting early-stage startups building on blockchain technology. Set up in Singapore last month through Credit Saison’s corporate venture arm, Saison Capital, the vehicle is aiming for up to $50 million in commitments and will run for 10 years, with an optional two-year extension. Established in 2019, the venture arm has backed fintech startups across Asia and, since 2021, has increasingly focused on blockchain-based finance, investing in more than 40 companies. The firm said those investments laid the groundwork for Onigiri Capital, which will also enable other financial institutions to invest alongside Credit Saison in promising blockchain ventures. Onigiri Capital will concentrate on five areas: stablecoins, payments, asset tokenization, decentralized finance (DeFi), and financial infrastructure. The fund will invest primarily at the seed and early stages, with an emphasis on long-term growth. Managing the fund are Qin En Looi, a partner at Saison Capital involved in over 40 blockchain investments, and Hans de Back, a venture investor with more than two decades of experience. Cross-border stablecoin pilotThe launch comes as Japan steps up efforts in digital assets beyond investment alone. According to Electronic Times, the first phase of “Project Pax,” a cross-border stablecoin remittance pilot involving financial institutions in Japan and South Korea, concluded successfully last week. Participants were Progmat—a tokenization platform backed by a consortium of major institutions, including MUFG—along with Datachain and Shoko Chukin Bank from Japan, and Shinhan Bank, NH Nonghyup Bank, and Kbank from South Korea. Fair Square Lab and Korea Digital Asset Custody helped develop an application programming interface (API) for the trial. The pilot demonstrated the feasibility of a network that converts fiat currency into stablecoins for on-chain transfers and then back into local currency at the destination, an approach expected to reduce the time and cost of cross-border payments. The results add momentum to Japan’s bid to modernize financial infrastructure, a backdrop that Onigiri Capital aims to capitalize on as it deploys capital into the sector.

Korea to introduce more effective guidelines for crypto listing and delistingThe South Korean cryptocurrency industry is expected to see standardized guidelines for listing and delisting cryptocurrencies on trading platforms by the first half of next year, according to a report by local news outlet ETnews. This team includes both government officials and experts from the private sector.An official from the FSS noted that the task force is aiming to present the final version of the guidelines to the National Assembly before the implementation of the Virtual Asset User Protection Act in July of next year. Operating under the oversight of the financial regulator, these standardized guidelines are expected to enhance their effectiveness and aid crypto businesses in maintaining self-regulation.Frequent listing and delistingThe decision by the Korean financial authorities to formulate these guidelines was prompted by the frequent listing and delisting of cryptocurrencies on trading platforms, which pose risks and cause confusion for customers. An earlier report from the Financial Services Commission’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) highlighted that the number of tokens listed in the first half of 2023 increased to 169, up from 95 in the first half of 2022, while the number of delisted tokens rose from 78 to 115.The WEMIX controversyThe cycle of listing, delisting, and relisting cryptocurrencies has sparked controversies, with WEMIX serving as a notable example. WEMIX is the native token of blockchain gaming company Wemade’s Wemix blockchain network. In December, WEMIX was collectively delisted by the Digital Asset eXchange Alliance (DAXA), which includes South Korea’s top five crypto exchanges: Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit, and Gopax. The reason cited was Wemade’s breach of disclosure rules regarding token distribution.However, in a turn of events, Coinone relisted WEMIX on its platform in February this year. Following this, DAXA established self-regulatory guidelines concerning the relisting of tokens. Despite these guidelines, Gopax also proceeded to relist WEMIX earlier this month. As a result of this move, DAXA criticized Gopax for not complying with the self-regulatory guidelines. Gopax faced a restriction on its voting rights within the alliance for three months, and a cautionary note was issued against them.An industry insider noted that despite the efforts of DAXA, their self-regulation measures for cryptocurrency trading services, including the listing process, have not been particularly effective. However, the upcoming rules are expected to be more impactful as they will be in line with the forthcoming Virtual Asset User Protection Act.
