BlackRock Investment Marks its Return to India

Web3 & Enterprise·July 28, 2023, 12:05 AM

BlackRock, the world’s largest money manager with $9.4 trillion in assets under management, has made a significant move by joining forces with the financial services arm of Indian tycoon Mukesh Ambani.

This strategic partnership aims to tap into India’s rapidly growing asset management market and marks BlackRock’s return to the country following a six-year absence.

The collaboration between BlackRock and Jio Financial Services, a company built by Reliance Industries Limited, will establish a 50–50 joint venture called Jio BlackRock. BlackRock announced the collaboration via a statement published to its website on Wednesday.

$300 million investment

Both companies plan to invest up to $150 million each in this venture. Larry Fink, BlackRock’s Chairman and CEO, articulated his satisfaction regarding the partnership in a LinkedIn post, emphasizing the significance of expanding BlackRock’s presence in India.

Mukesh Ambani, the Founder and Chairman of Reliance Industries, is India’s richest man with a net worth believed to be in the region of $90.6 billion. The conglomerate is the country’s largest listed company by market share. Collaborating with BlackRock will likely strengthen its position in the financial services sector.

The joint venture aims to leverage BlackRock’s expertise in investment and risk management, combined with Jio Financial Services’ technological capabilities and deep market knowledge. The objective will be to provide “tech-enabled access to affordable, innovative investment solutions” for Indian investors. With rising affluence, favorable demographics, and the ongoing digital transformation across industries in India, the market is undergoing a significant shift.

Potential implications for crypto

This move comes shortly after Jio Financial Services was spun off from its parent company, Reliance Industries. The digital-first service is focused on delivering innovative investment solutions to cater to the growing needs of Indian investors.

While there’s absolutely no mention of crypto relative to this announcement, it may still have implications for crypto in India. BlackRock has progressed from taking a dim view of Bitcoin and crypto to now turning towards this new asset class. It recently filed an application to launch a bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) in the United States. That move is considered highly significant by most market commentators.

Given that Jio Financial takes a digital-first approach and that the idea of the partnership is to bring the latest financial products to retail customers in India, there’s potential for this new entity to bring digital asset-related products to that market.

Indian market re-entry

BlackRock’s re-entry into India’s asset management industry is not the first attempt by the US investment management firm. In 2018, BlackRock exited the Indian market by selling its 40% stake in an asset management venture to partner DSP Group, but the company recognizes the enormous potential that India presents.

Over the past five years, assets under management of Indian mutual funds have doubled, reaching 44.39 trillion rupees ($542 billion) by June this year. The exponential growth in this sector highlights the immense opportunities India offers to global asset managers like BlackRock.

While the launch of the joint venture is subject to closing conditions and regulatory approvals, the collaboration between BlackRock and Jio Financial Services appears to be poised to unlock the power of investing for millions of people in India.

Pakistan’s newly appointed Minister of State for Crypto and Blockchain, Bilal bin Saqib, has been spending time in the United States recently with a view towards collaborating with the Trump administration and Wall Street on matters related to digital assets and digital asset regulation. Pakistani TV channel 24 News HD reported on June 4 that bin Saqib met with Bo Hines during a visit to the White House in Washington, D.C. Hines was appointed by U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this year as the executive director of the President’s Council of Advisors on Digital Assets. Ways to broaden cooperation between Pakistan and the U.S. with regard to the digital assets sector were a primary topic covered during their meeting. Consideration was given to the potential for future partnerships between the two nations, with a particular emphasis on strategic alignment on digital asset policy.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashStrategic Bitcoin ReserveBitcoin was also a topic of conversation during the meeting. Last week, bin Saqib, who also heads up the South Asian nation’s newly formed Pakistan Crypto Council (PCC), appeared at the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas to announce that “the Pakistani government is setting up their own government-led Bitcoin Strategic Reserve.” In his keynote address, he stated that Pakistan would hold Bitcoin in a national wallet and would “never ever sell them.” Following his meeting with Hines, bin Saqib took to X, stating:”We’re building strong bridges with the U.S. on Bitcoin reserves, stablecoins, and digital asset frameworks.” Responding to bin Saqib’s X post, Faizan Siddiqi, a Pakistani expat and COO of Canadian advertising services firm, MonetizeMore, underscored the importance of the meeting for an emerging generation in Pakistan inspired “to believe in a brighter, decentralized future.” In addition to meeting with Hines, bin Saqib also met with officials from the White House Counsel’s office, engaging with them on blockchain governance and legal framework matters. New York meetingsFollowing his meeting in Washington, D.C., bin Saqib moved on to New York. A video clip posted by the PCC to the X social media platform on June 6 showed bin Saqib meeting with New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The Pakistani minister thanked Adams for all he is doing for the crypto ecosystem, while inviting him to visit Pakistan and to consider a partnership between New York and the PCC. While in New York, bin Saqib also met with Brandon Lutnick, chairman of global financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald and son of former Cantor Fitzgerald Chairman Howard Lutnick, who was appointed by U.S. President Donald Trump to the position of secretary of commerce back in February.  While Cantor Fitzgerald is a well-established traditional finance (TradFi) firm founded in 1945, the company has embraced digital assets more recently. Cantor has taken on leading stablecoin issuer Tether as a client, having also invested in the company. Last month, the firm launched its first Bitcoin fund. It’s understood that bin Saqib discussed tokenization, Bitcoin mining, the future of Web3 in Pakistan and potential for collaboration with Lutnick. Last month, Pakistan allocated 2,000 MW of surplus electricity to Bitcoin mining and AI data centers.

IOTA co-founder meets with Philippine Secretary of Trade to further adoption

Dominik Schiener, the co-founder of distributed ledger technology (DLT) project IOTA, outlined on X on Dec. 12 that he had met with Cristina Aldeguer-Roque, Secretary of Trade of the Philippines. Commenting further, Schiener wrote: “We are looking forward to expand IOTA and our trade infrastructure TWIN across South East Asia in 2025.” Photo by iSawRed on UnsplashCutting through trade barriersTWIN refers to IOTA’s Trade Worldwide Information Network, a continuation of another longstanding IOTA project, the Trade and Logistics Information Pipeline (TLIP). The objective of TWIN is to cut through trade barriers and improve connections between disparate national trading systems. In rolling out the network, IOTA has formed a consortium which includes organizations such as TradeMark Africa, the Global Alliance for Trade Facilitation and the Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade. TWIN seeks to optimize trade processes by merging physical goods with digital infrastructure, eliminating inefficiencies and boosting transparency. Schiener anticipates that once participants place data on the network, they will ultimately tokenize assets on it. In turn, this will result in utility for the IOTA token, once TWIN is released on the IOTA mainnet. The TWIN project is currently staffed by 28 people but Schiener believes that this will grow to 100 people over the course of the next two years. The project originally emerged in Germany, with the IOTA Foundation having its headquarters in Berlin. Initially, IOTA concerned itself with European blockchain initiatives in trying to find its place in the industry. Earlier this year, its Web3 identity authentication solution was chosen by the European Commission for inclusion within the European Blockchain Sandbox Initiative (EBSI). In August, the IOTA Foundation completed the final stage of the European Union’s blockchain pre-commercial procurement (PCP) program. Strategic expansionHowever, over the course of the past year, the project has expanded towards searching for product market fit within emerging markets. In November 2023, the project established the IOTA Ecosystem DLT Foundation within the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) financial center in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This marked the first DLT foundation to have established itself within the ADGM.  $100 million in funding was provided with the objective of nurturing the IOTA ecosystem and accelerating the growth of the IOTA protocol. Since then, the TON Foundation and the Aptos Foundation have moved to register under the ADGM’s DLT Foundations framework. East Africa has been ground zero for IOTA’s attempts to enhance cross-border processes related to trade documentation, where it has been working with TradeMark Africa and local regulators. In Singapore, the IOTA Foundation has collaborated with global innovation ecosystem Tenity to establish the IOTA Accelerator, a 12-week initiative aimed at assisting early-stage startups concerned with real-world asset (RWA) tokenization within the IOTA ecosystem. Schiener’s meeting in the Philippines would suggest that the project is making greater efforts still in terms of bringing about the adoption of the technology in Southeast Asia. In his X post, Schiener wrote: “Let's connect the world with sovereign digital infrastructure.”
