RBI Official Encourages Indian Banks to Adopt Blockchain

Policy & Regulation·June 01, 2023, 12:00 AM

In a recent conference organized by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Deputy Governor Mahesh Kumar Jain highlighted the importance of adopting innovative technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain to ensure sustainable growth and stability in the country’s banking sector.

Speaking at the RBI-hosted event for directors of Indian banks last week, Jain emphasized the need for effective corporate governance, governance structure, and risk management strategies to tackle future challenges arising from technological disruptions, evolving customer expectations, and cybersecurity threats.

Leveraging AI and blockchain

The recommendation to leverage AI and blockchain technologies aligns with India’s digital transformation goals and the desire to enhance customer experiences while investing in cybersecurity measures. Jain advised Indian banks to prepare for the future by focusing on digital transformation, exploring innovative technologies like AI and blockchain, and seeking collaborative opportunities with other industry players. He also emphasized the importance of upskilling the workforce to meet the demands of the digital era.

Inconsistent approach

This proposal comes at a time when the Indian government’s stance on cryptocurrencies remains ambiguous. While India has been exploring the introduction of a central bank digital currency (CBDC), the Cryptocurrency and Regulation of Official Digital Currency Bill, 2021, which aimed to establish regulations for digital currencies, has not been legislated.

According to the RBI’s annual report, which was published on Tuesday, the central bank is progressing with its retail central bank digital currency (CBDC) pilot program, with plans to expand the number of banks involved, the use cases, and the number of locations. It had expanded the scope of the project to involve one million citizens, but it’s looking to broaden that user base also. In contrast, the country’s approach to decentralized cryptocurrency has been contradictory, sometimes banning it and at other times, allowing it.

It is noteworthy that India’s neighbor, Pakistan, has also recently announced plans to train one million IT graduates in AI by 2027, with potential applications in weather prediction, agriculture supply chain optimization, and health services transformation.

The RBI’s recommendation to adopt AI and blockchain technologies reflects the growing recognition of their potential benefits for the banking sector.

Embracing tech innovation in banking

By embracing these technologies, Indian banks can enhance efficiency, automate processes, and strengthen security measures. The adoption of AI and blockchain has the potential to transform various aspects of banking, including risk management, fraud detection, customer service, and transaction processing.

While India continues to navigate the regulatory landscape surrounding cryptocurrencies, the central bank’s focus on AI and blockchain signals its commitment to embracing technological advancements and preparing the banking sector for the future. As India’s financial ecosystem evolves, the adoption of these technologies can empower banks to offer innovative services, streamline operations, and provide secure and efficient financial solutions to customers.

The RBI’s emphasis on digital transformation, AI, and blockchain paves the way for Indian banks to explore new avenues for growth and resilience. As the country progresses on its digital journey, the adoption of emerging technologies will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the banking sector and contributing to India’s overall economic development.

Crypto.com tops USD-supported crypto exchange trading volume in July

Singapore-headquartered crypto exchange platform Crypto.com has boosted its standing amongst its peers by achieving the largest spot crypto trading volume for the month of July where USD-supported exchanges are concerned. According to data published by The Block, the exchange platform achieved $68.85 billion in spot trading volume among USD-supported exchanges in July out of an overall total of $178.84 billion. American exchange platform Coinbase was next in the rankings, with a July trading volume total of $63.97 billion.Photo by Alexander Grey on UnsplashInstitutional client boost It’s understood that the uptick in trading volume experienced by the exchange platform is as a consequence of an increase in the number of institutional clients using Crypto.com’s trading services.  Giuseppe Giuliani, the managing director of Crypto.com, told Cointelegraph that more institutional clients are using the platform due to an improved product offering, together with stronger market conditions. Giuliani stated: “This growth has been primarily driven by the acquisition of new clients on the platform, both large institutions and advanced retail traders, and is being supported by stronger market conditions in 2024.” Giuliani told The Block that growth on the platform has played out over the medium term, stating:  "We have seen incremental market share growth month on month over the last 18 months.” Driving Bitcoin unit price Institutional adoption has been a developing theme in 2024. Some analysts have pointed to its importance in the attainment of an ever higher Bitcoin unit price. Crypto market analyst Willy Woo has suggested recently that a 3% allocation by institutions could lead to a Bitcoin unit price of $700,000. In its most recent quarterly report, global investment bank Canaccord Genuity outlined that there is growing institutional adoption relative to spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The launch of spot Ethereum ETF products in the U.S. last month is also understood to have helped towards an improved monthly trading volume for Crypto.com. Giuliani stated: “In the week of July 21 during which Ether ETF was launched, we have seen double-digit growth in our exchange’s Ether spot and perpetual volume week-on-week, building on consecutive weeks of robust volume growth.” Furthermore, the exchange platform claims to have seen increased interest and market participation from TradFi firms. Growing through licensing and sponsorship Crypto.com has attempted to further its market impact worldwide, including in Hong Kong, having applied for a trading license in the Chinese autonomous territory in February, and succeeding in that endeavor more recently according to subsequent reports. It received a license from the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in 2022, with the FCA awarding the company a further license, an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license, in 2023. High profile sports sponsorships is another marketing strategy the firm has pursued in recent years. The company has claimed to be reaping the rewards of these deals, which it has made in Formula 1 (F1) motor racing and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

SUI hits new ATH following blockchain academy collaboration

The SUI token has surged to an all-time high (ATH) price after the revelation of the project’s partnership with the American University of Sharjah (AUS) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to establish the AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy. SUI is the native token of the Sui blockchain, a layer one blockchain network and smart contract platform that’s striving to make digital asset ownership private, secure and accessible. The AUS-Sui Blockchain AcademyAccording to a press release published via regional news media outlet Zawya on Monday, the AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy is situated within the multidisciplinary Center of Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Sustainable Development, within the AUS. It’s been set out to align with the principles of entrepreneurship, innovation and sustainability with the objective of fostering responsible and impactful technological advancement relative to blockchain. The Academy aims to equip the next generation of leaders and innovators with the necessary knowledge to harness Web3 technology so as to address future global challenges. Dr. Greg Siourouni, Managing Director of the Sui Foundation, expressed enthusiasm for the blockchain education initiative, emphasizing its role in advancing Sharjah's goal of becoming a leading educational and research hub.Photo by Ainur Kamaev on UnsplashPrice surgeIn response to the announcement, SUI's token price has surged. While it’s up 4% over the course of the past 24 hours, the token is now standing at a record-high unit price of $1.79 since its launch in May 2023. The positive momentum in SUI's price underscores market enthusiasm for the layer-1 blockchain platform's educational initiatives. However, other in-roads being made by the project may also be playing a role. Last September the project launched zkLogin, a Web3 authentication solution that enables dApp users to login using social media accounts. The following month, the Sui Foundation announced a $50 million ecosystem fund in an effort to bolster growth relative to the Sui network. AUS and SUI blockchain education initiativesThis latest initiative is part of Sharjah's vision to position itself as a regional powerhouse for education and research, particularly in the realm of technology and blockchain. It’s not the first blockchain-centric collaboration that the university has engaged in. In June of last year, Dubai-headquartered crypto spot and derivatives trading platform Bybit partnered with AUS to establish a scholarship fund of $272,000. That endeavor is supporting fintech and blockchain studies for the benefit of 20 students. The Sui Foundation too has established a track record where educational initiatives are concerned. It has previously introduced several programs, including a Web3-focused curriculum at the Wheeler Institute for Business and Development at the London Business School. Additionally, it awarded $400,000 in Sui Academic Research Awards (SARAs) to 15 universities worldwide and introduced a Web3 curriculum for high school students. SUI's partnership with AUS to establish the AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy reflects its commitment to advancing education and innovation in the blockchain space, while its price surge is suggestive of market optimism for its future endeavors.

Gate.HK ceases operations and withdraws license application in Hong Kong

Gate.HK, cryptocurrency exchange Gate.io’s Hong Kong entity, is discontinuing its operations and has retracted its application for a crypto trading platform license with the local regulator. The company announced on Wednesday a planned "major overhaul" of its platform and has ceased new user registrations and deposits immediately. In compliance with local regulations, Gate.HK will delist all tokens—including major ones like Bitcoin, Ether and USDT—on May 28, urging users to withdraw their assets by August 28. The trading platform, which launched officially in May 2023, aims to re-enter the Hong Kong market in the future after securing the necessary approvals and contributing to the virtual asset ecosystem.Photo by Kelly Sikkema on UnsplashRegulatory environment and industry responseThe withdrawal of the license application, initially submitted in February 2023, was noted on the website of the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) on May 22, without a disclosed reason for the withdrawal. The SFC mandates that crypto trading platforms without a submitted license application by Feb. 29 must shut down by May 31 or within three months upon receiving further notice. This regulation has impacted several platforms, including HKVAEX and Huobi HK, both of which have recently withdrawn their license applications and ceased operations or faced operational uncertainties in the region. Currently, the SFC is reviewing applications from 20 crypto firms, indicating significant interest among global exchanges in securing retail trading licenses in Hong Kong.
