New local payment methods

According to a recent press release, the integration offers a direct-to-customer plugin, providing access to a diverse range of cryptocurrencies. The move aims to enhance Bitcoin.com's reach, particularly in Asian and Latin American markets, by incorporating new local payment methods.

Bitcoin.com emphasized the significance of Alchemy Pay's integration, suggesting that it represented a streamlined transition between fiat and crypto with an expanded array of local payment options. This development aligns with Bitcoin.com's goal of meeting the needs of its user base in Asia and Latin America.

Alchemy Pay's payment gateway facilitates transactions using major credit cards such as Visa, Mastercard, Discover and Diners Club across 173 countries. Additionally, the platform supports domestic transfers and mobile wallet payments in developing markets. Alchemy Pay attempts to make the know-your-customer (KYC) process frictionless, coupling that service offering with low fees and competitive conversion rates. The firm’s overriding mission is to make cryptocurrency transactions as convenient as typical online payments.

Focusing on industry partnerships

Alchemy Pay has been pursuing industry collaborations at an ever increasing rate over the course of the past year. The network boasts over 300 fiat payment channels, enabling checkouts beyond card payments to include various local mobile wallet options.

Last month, it clinched a deal with global payment processor, Worldpay. That collaboration facilitates Alchemy Pay service users in leveraging Worldpay’s extensive Visa and Mastercard payment rails. Back in July, it struck a similar deal with global payments processor, Checkout.com.

The company has also been active in the United States. Within that market, it has secured money transmitter licenses in the states of Iowa and Arkansas. It’s understood that the firm has more such licensing applications in the works in other U.S. states.

At the end of November, Alchemy partnered with self custody and multi-coin wallet project Trust Wallet, enabling the wallet providers 70 million users in engaging in crypto transactions involving fiat payments.

VERSE token

Bitcoin.com's native Token VERSE was launched in December 2022, acting as the platform’s rewards and utility token. The VERSE token has been enabled as a supported cryptocurrency as part of the Alchemy Pay platform integration.

The utility token serves as a method of payment in its own right within the Bitcoin.com ecosystem and beyond, unlocking rewards along different tiers, and providing access to exclusive platform services. Users worldwide can leverage the VERSE DEX, Bitcoin.com's decentralized exchange, to swap cryptocurrencies without reliance on third-party custodians.

Bitcoin.com’s goal is to simplify the process of buying, spending, trading, investing, earning and staying informed about cryptocurrency and the future of finance. Millions of users utilize Bitcoin.com's multi-chain digital wallet app for various crypto-related activities.

Meanwhile, Alchemy Pay supports transactions in 173 countries. The ramp, a one-stop solution for buying and selling crypto and fiat, can be seamlessly integrated by platforms and dApps as needed.

Indonesian authorities crack down on illegal crypto mining facilities

Recent reports from local media outlets indicate that Indonesian authorities have conducted raids on crypto mining sites, accusing them of illicitly siphoning electricity from the utility poles of the state-owned electricity company. The government’s intervention comes as part of a broader effort to address energy theft and regulate the cryptocurrency mining industry in the country.Photo by Fré Sonneveld on UnsplashTen mining sites raidedOfficials from the state-owned electricity company PLN highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts in exposing the unauthorized mining operations that were tapping into the national grid without approval. According to the reports, the ten illegal bitcoin mining sites which were raided incurred a financial loss of approximately 1.4 billion Indonesian rupees, equivalent to $100,000 for the state. The impact of energy theft extended beyond financial concerns, raising environmental and community-related concerns. Local students, alarmed by the potential consequences, urged PLN and regional police to investigate the mining operations. Subsequent action revealed that the theft was indeed taking place, prompting PLN officers from the Bukit Barisan Customer Service Implementation Unit (UP3) to conduct a raid. However, the officers faced threats and resistance, leading to a close coordination between PLN and the North Sumatra Regional Police. The raid uncovered a total of 1,300 bitcoin mining machines engaged in illegal operations, with each machine consuming a substantial 1,800 watts of electricity. Inspector General Agung Effendi, the North Sumatra Police Chief, disclosed that the illicit activities had been ongoing for an estimated six months, resulting in the arrest of 26 individuals across the ten locations.PLN reassured stakeholders of continued collaboration with the police to prevent further electricity theft and safeguard the national grid from such unauthorized activities. Worldwide concernThe incident in Indonesia reflects a global concern over the energy consumption of cryptocurrency mining operations generally, but also with regard to illegal activity. In recent years, the environmental impact of these operations has become a focal point in public policy debates, with climate activists emphasizing the harm caused. Government officials, on the other hand, express concerns about the potential disruption to the total distribution network if not properly regulated. In September, neighboring Malaysia identified illegal crypto mining activities in the state of Sarawak as the reason for recurrent power disruption. Meanwhile, in Singapore in August, authorities uncovered a crypto mining scam that cheated investors out of $1.3 million dollars. Indonesia joins other countries that have conducted raids on crypto mining operations accused of running large-scale, unregistered facilities. Malaysia has witnessed multiple arrests related to digital asset mines, while in Venezuela, authorities seized bitcoin machines and weapons from a recaptured prison controlled by a criminal gang. Legitimate mining potentialNotably, this marks the first such incident in Indonesia, and energy theft charges in the country are punishable by up to five years in prison or 200% of the stolen energy’s value. Despite these problems, Indonesia also understands the opportunity that exists where legal bitcoin mining is carried out. In May, Ridwan Kamil, Governor of the province of West Java, participated in a fireside chat titled “The Indonesia Bitcoin Mining Campaign.” During that event, Governor Kamil recognized the potential that bitcoin mining offers Indonesia. He stated: “[Indonesia has] the second most geothermal potential in the world — more than 800 rivers with hydropower. As bitcoin allows the transformation of energy into money, bitcoin could be transformative for Indonesia.” The global trend of addressing energy consumption in crypto mining is evident in Kazakhstan, where regulators seek to limit miners’ access to the national grid unless they operate solar-powered mines. Indonesia, with its pro-crypto population, is also moving towards increased regulation, mandating all crypto exchanges to register with the Commodity Futures Exchange (CFX) to continue operations beyond August 2024.

Subreddit Token Price Slide Following Surge

Subreddit Token Price Slide Following SurgeReddit’s subreddit community tokens, Moon and Brick, having experienced a remarkable surge in prices last week fueled by a significant increase in trading volume, have taken a downward trajectory, plummeting in price.Photo by Mike Petrucci on UnsplashCrypto.com token listingThe Moon token, associated with Reddit’s r/CryptoCurrency community boasting over 6.5 million members, shot up from approximately $0.09 to nearly $0.58 on July 19, just after Singapore trading platform Crypto.com listed the token.Concurrently, trading volume spiked to around $3 million on Wednesday, marking an impressive boost.Similarly, the Fortnite subreddit community token, Brick, which Crypto.com distributes as a reward to contributors of r/Fortnite, also witnessed a substantial price surge. The token’s value surged from $0.01 on July 17 to approximately $0.10 on July 19, according to data from CoinGecko.Surge acknowledgedIn response to the sudden price surges, Crypto.com released a note early on Monday, acknowledging the surge both tokens had experienced recently. However, in a swift turn of events, both tokens experienced a significant downturn in the past 24 hours, with their prices plummeting by over 20%.As of midday (ET) on Monday, Moon was trading at $0.33, while Brick was valued just under $0.05, as reported by CoinGecko data. Moreover, trading volumes for both tokens have significantly contracted during this period of volatility. Moon’s volume shrank from over $1 million on July 23 to approximately $200,000 on Monday. On the other hand, Brick’s volume saw an even more drastic decrease, falling from approximately $210,000 on July 23 to a mere $26,000 on Monday.Terms of service changeMarket analysts speculate that the recent change in Reddit’s Terms of Service might have been the catalyst for the initial price increases. Reddit’s alteration of its Terms of Service on July 16 to permit users to trade community tokens and avatars potentially triggered the surge in token prices. It appears that Web2 centralized virtual goods such as coins and awards are making way for tradable Web3 community points.Speculating on the token price surge, Bobby Ong, the Co-Founder and COO of Malaysia-headquartered cryptocurrency data aggregator CoinGecko, wrote via Twitter last week: “Both tokens increased at the speculation of the changes coming at Reddit. No one knows exactly what is happening but Reddit deprecating Web2 Coins & Awards while allowing trading of their Web3 CPs could be something to monitor in the coming months.”Despite the recent downturn, the overall crypto space remains highly dynamic and unpredictable. Events such as the listing of tokens on prominent trading platforms can cause rapid price fluctuations. As always, that scenario makes it essential for investors to approach these assets with caution. While Moon and Brick may have encountered a sharp decline, the cryptocurrency market, in general, has proven its resilience and ability to rebound with Bitcoin currently holding a unit price of $29,125. As the market continues to evolve and gain wider acceptance, investors will need to continue to exercise caution and consider the volatility inherent in digital assets.
