Bitdeer pivots amid onset of Trump’s tariff war

In response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s imposition of tariffs on foreign imports into the United States, Singapore-based and Nasdaq-listed Bitdeer has pivoted in an effort to handle this latest challenge.

 

In a discussion with Bloomberg, Jeff LaBerge, the company’s head of capital markets and strategic initiatives, said that rather than concentrating on sales and exporting crypto mining rigs, the company plans to utilize those rigs itself within its own mining operations.

LaBerge stated:

 

“Our plan going forward is to prioritize our self-mining.”

 

90-day window

The company is also planning to take advantage of a 90-day tariff suspension period that the Trump administration put in place earlier this month, to ship mining machines from Southeast Asia to the United States. 

 

In tandem with this short-term push on U.S. exports, it is expected that miners will focus on buying hardware during this time. Jaran Mellerud, CEO of Hashlabs Mining, told Cointelegraph last week that in the short term, there is likely to be a spike in mining rig imports into the U.S. Some reports have suggested that U.S.-based mining firms have chartered flights in an effort to quickly import mining equipment and avoid tariffs of up to 104%.

Additional capital overheads for U.S. miners

Over the longer term, the crypto mining services company CEO believes that tariffs will hurt U.S.-based miners, increasing their capital costs to a greater extent than in the case of overseas-based mining operations. 

Earlier this month Kristian Csepcsar, chief marketing officer (CMO) at Bitcoin mining technology firm, Braiins, similarly claimed that Trump administration tariff policy would likely harm domestic mining companies, while benefiting those located in regions such as Russia and Kazakhstan. 

 

In another effort to deal with the challenge of tariffs on its products entering the United States, Bitdeer anticipates that it will begin production of its mining equipment in the U.S. sometime during H2 2025.

 

Much has changed for the Singapore-based firm over the course of a short period of time. A month ago LaBerge told CoinDesk about its efforts to challenge the leading ASIC Bitcoin mining equipment manufacturers, Bitmain and MicroBT. He said that Bitdeer wants to become “the top player in the market,” while believing that it has the technology and know-how to do so.

 

Challenging market conditions

Even before this tariff war bubbled over recently, the environment for Bitcoin miners was already proving to be difficult. Miners had been selling off Bitcoin reserves in recent weeks, taking profits while anticipating lower Bitcoin prices in the near future.

 

American multinational financial services firm JPMorgan estimated recently that the market cap of the 14 U.S.-listed Bitcoin miners had fallen by 25% in March, writing off $6 billion in value in what was the third worst month for miners on record. Last month Bernstein analysts cut their 2025 price targets for a range of publicly-listed Bitcoin miners.

 

Miners have been adapting to their business environment by upgrading equipment, cutting costs and diversifying into AI data hosting.

Ripple supports Japanese Web3 initiative & crypto research within APAC

Ripple Labs, the American technology company that developed and supports XRP and the XRP Ledger (XRPL), has partnered with Japan’s Web3 Salon initiative, while in a separate development, the company is also funding crypto-related academic research within the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.Photo by Moose Photos on PexelsDriving Web3 adoption in JapanIn a statement published to its website on June 9, the company outlined that it has partnered with Japan’s Web3 Salon project, a Web3 initiative with the objective of educating businesses and developers, nurturing blockchain startups and driving Web3 adoption through the provision of startup incubator programs and running hackathons and workshops.One of Japan’s most active Web3 projects, Web3 Salon has the backing of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). The project has also collaborated with a range of Japanese Web3 startups, Asia Web3 Alliance Japan (AWAJ), institutional investors and venture capital firms, as well as a number of key industry stakeholders. Grant fundingAs part of its involvement in this collaboration, Ripple will provide grant funding of up to $200,000 to Japanese startups who have developed their projects on XRPL. Ripple’s grant funding forms part of its broader initiative to finance XRPL-related startups in Japan and Korea. Earlier this month, it confirmed that it had established the XRPL Japan and Korea Fund for this purpose.  At a broader level still, Ripple said that this latest funding commitment also falls under its one billion XRP commitment. Back in 2022 the company committed one billion XRP to advance XRPL ecosystem projects. Christina Chan, Senior Director of Developer Growth at Ripple, commented on the development, stating:“Ripple is proud to collaborate with Web3 Salon to unlock new opportunities in Japan’s thriving startup ecosystem. Together, we hope to fuel innovation and support the next generation of leaders.” Supporting APAC university researchIn a separate blog post published to its website on June 10, Ripple outlined that it was committing $5 million in funding within the APAC region as part of its University Blockchain Research Initiative (UBRI). The funding will cover blockchain-related academic research projects in Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Australia. $1.1 million has been allocated to South Korea’s Korea University in funding that will be released over a six-year period. The funding builds on another relationship that had already been established with Yonsei University via the UBRI in 2024. Equally, Japan’s Kyoto University had engaged with the UBRI last year. That support is now being renewed while funding is also being allocated to the University of Tokyo. The two institutions will be able to avail to funding in excess of $1.5 million.Other APAC region educational institutions to benefit include the National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST) in Taiwan, the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore and the Australian National University (ANU) in Australia.’An epicenter of digital finance’Ripple called APAC “an epicenter of digital finance.” Expanding further on that assertion, it stated that the region has shown “an appetite for experimentation and boasting thriving communities for builders.” Consequently, it views the APAC region as a leader in payment technologies and digital asset adoption.

Animoca Brands makes key appointment to drive Japanese market expansion

Animoca Brands Japan, a key subsidiary of Hong Kong-headquartered Web3 investor Animoca Brands, has welcomed Kensuke Amo as its Chief Operating Officer (COO) to spearhead the company's growth in Japan. Industry credentialsAmo, a seasoned industry veteran who previously served as the managing executive officer at Japanese bitcoin wallet and exchange service Coincheck, officially assumed his role as COO last Thursday. With a proven track record in launching NFT businesses and steering new crypto asset ventures, Amo played a pivotal role at Coincheck. During his tenure as an executive officer from 2020, he pioneered initiatives such as Japan's first NFT marketplace for crypto asset exchanges and an inaugural initial exchange offering (IEO). In a social media post, Amo stated that in the role, he “will be committed to doing [his] best to contribute [to] Web3 technology [so that it takes] root in society.” In 2022, Amo ascended to the leadership position at Coincheck, where he led the NFT business and metaverse business, heading three distinct web domains. That deal also implicated a collaboration with Animoca’s digital experience label, KLKTN. As Animoca Brands Japan strategically aligns itself within Animoca Brands' larger framework, Kensuke Amo aims to leverage the company's extensive assets and network, including over 400 portfolio companies. His mission involves combining his expertise in business and rule-making within the Japanese Web3 industry to facilitate the integration of Web3 into society. Commenting further on his appointment, Amo expressed his commitment to advancing the Web3 landscape in Japan.
