South Korean blockchain fintech company Infinite Block announced Monday that it has been selected to participate in the Tech Incubator Program for Startups (TIPS) program.

“Being selected for TIPS as the first domestic custodial services company to do so carries significant importance, as it acknowledges our technological capabilities and business viability on an international scale,” said the company’s CEO Jeong Gu-tae.

Paving the way for an innovative future

TIPS is a private investment-led technology entrepreneurship program organized by the Korea Business Angels Association and Korea Institute of Startup and Entrepreneurship Development (KISED) — two affiliated institutions under the Ministry of SMEs and Startups — to foster startups that possess innovative technology.

The program appoints and designates venture founders to serve as angel investors and leaders of technological enterprises as a given startup’s incubator and/or accelerator. Throughout the two-year duration of the program, the startups can take advantage of angel investor networking and mentoring and receive KRW 500 million (approximately $370,000) in research and development (R&D) funding from the government. They can also receive an additional KRW 200 million in commercialization funds.

Infinite Block, which specializes in custody services tailored to corporate-owned virtual assets, was selected for TIPS by attracting investment from the fintech innovation fund operated by venture company Infobank. This is part of a series of strategic investments that it secured within just six months of its establishment, including those from leading domestic financial institutions like banks and securities companies.

Pioneering fintech development

The company has consistently been boosting efforts to expand into a prominent fintech platform, starting by receiving approval from Korea’s Financial Services Commission (FSC) to become a virtual asset service provider (VASP) and later on obtaining ISO 27001 certification for the information security management system of its blockchain platform. More recently, it launched a custody-based Ethereum staking service for corporate clients.

“We will strive to provide trustworthy digital asset infrastructure by implementing a fintech platform that not only offers innovation through blockchain and cyber security technology but also meets regulatory requirements assigned by financial authorities,” Jeong stated.

Singapore’s UniPass Plays Role in ERC-4337 Vulnerability Fix

Singapore’s UniPass Plays Role in ERC-4337 Vulnerability FixSmart contract wallet provider UniPass and crypto infrastructure firm Fireblocks have successfully addressed a significant vulnerability in the Ethereum ecosystem.Photo by Nenad Novaković on UnsplashAccount abstraction vulnerabilityThis vulnerability, identified as the ERC-4337 account abstraction vulnerability, posed a critical security risk to hundreds of mainnet wallets. The joint effort between Fireblocks and UniPass was detailed in a blog post published to the Fireblocks website on Thursday. This vulnerability, if exploited, could have enabled a malicious actor to execute a complete takeover of the UniPass Wallet by manipulating Ethereum’s account abstraction process. The vulnerability represented a substantial threat to the security of smart contract wallets, as it could lead to unauthorized access and fund drainage.Improving user experienceAccount abstraction, as dealt with via ERC-4337, is a mechanism that introduces a novel way of processing transactions and interacting with smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain. It allows for a more flexible and efficient handling of transactions, transcending the traditional distinction between externally owned accounts (EOAs) and contract accounts.EOAs are controlled by private keys and can initiate transactions, while contract accounts are governed by the code of a smart contract. When an EOA initiates a transaction with a contract account, it triggers the execution of the contract’s code. Account abstraction introduces the notion of abstracted accounts, which are not tied to a specific private key and can initiate transactions and interact with smart contracts, similar to EOAs.In the context of ERC-4337, an account executing an action relies on the EntryPoint contract to ensure that only signed transactions are executed. Typically, these accounts trust a single audited EntryPoint contract to validate user operations before executing commands. However, the vulnerability resided in the fact that a malicious or buggy EntryPoint contract could potentially skip the validation step and directly call the execution function, bypassing essential security measures. This vulnerability, identified by the two firms, had allowed attackers to seize control of UniPass wallets by replacing the trusted EntryPoint of the wallet. Once this takeover was completed, the attacker could access the wallet and drain its funds. It’s worth noting that the vulnerability posed a threat to several hundred users who had activated the ERC-4337 module in their wallets, making them susceptible to exploitation by any actor on the blockchain. Fortunately, the wallets affected by this vulnerability contained only small amounts of funds, and swift mitigation efforts were successful in preventing further harm.Company mergerEarlier this year, Singapore’s UniPass merged with Chinese wallet provider Keystone to form Account Labs, a company which has been incorporated in Singapore. At the time, Keystone founder Liu Lixin outlined that further developing account abstraction-derived products was the objective of the creation of Account Labs. He stated:“We are on the cusp of a Web3 Account Abstraction revolution. Together, we’ll drive rapid transformation, making the transition from Web2 to Web3 effortless for users. Our goal is to ensure everyone can securely and smoothly manage a decentralized account. We welcome partners to join us in advancing the Web3 account domain.”In furthering that objective, Account Labs announced on Thursday that it had raised $7.7 million in a funding round led by Amber Group, MixMarvel DAO Ventures, and Qiming Ventures.

Binance Japan Sets Out Market Vision

Binance Japan Sets Out Market VisionDuring a virtual business discussion recently led by Takeshi Chino, the Head of Binance Japan, the firm provided insights into its vision within the Japanese market.Photo by David Edelstein on UnsplashIntegrating international version featuresSince its recent launch, Binance Japan has primarily been offering cryptocurrency spot trading and its “Simple Earn” crypto lending service. Expansion into leverage trading is on the horizon, aligning with the international version once regulatory requirements are met.Other key services that Binance has been offering on an international basis include its Initial Exchange Offering (IEO) platform “Launchpad” for emerging projects, staking services, and an NFT marketplace. While the exact timeline for introducing these services in Japan remains undisclosed, Chino assured attendees that there would be a gradual roll-out in compliance with local regulations. The vision that has been set out will see a particular focus being placed on potential collaborations involving stablecoins. Elaborating further on the company’s plans, Chino outlined that domestic expansion would encompass equities management, leverage trading, and the integration of features present in Binance’s global version. In reporting on the event, local crypto media outlet Coinpost explained that Chino further expressed Binance Japan’s ambition to establish connections between its ecosystem and Japanese private entities and government bodies, going beyond the scope of crypto transactions.Focusing on stablecoinsCentral to this vision is the integration of stablecoins into the existing financial infrastructure, with active partnerships leveraging Binance’s technology stack and track record.Chino recognizes the recent regulatory developments regarding yen-based stablecoins as a positive development for business expansion. While Japan’s stablecoin issuance framework remains stringent, collaborations for joint developments are being considered. The potential of yen-backed stablecoins for trade settlements and programmable payments is also being explored.Expanding crypto asset offeringBinance Japan has already made a significant mark by managing 34 equities since its inception, establishing itself as a leader in the Japanese equities landscape. Notably, Binance’s native BNB (Build and Build) token and the Algorand ALGO token have made successful entries into the Japanese market. In its take on the online briefing, Bloomberg outlined that Chino has an initial target of one hundred crypto assets. The global version of the company offers in excess of 350 assets to its users. In adding new assets, a focus will be placed on those particular digital assets that resonate with Japanese market preferences.Other short-to-mid-term goals include facilitating Security Token Offering (STO) payments through stablecoins, merchant onboarding for “Binance Pay,” educational initiatives, among others.Binance Japan emerged following the acquisition by Binance of Sakura Exchange Bitcoin (SEBC), a local crypto exchange, in November of last year. A regulatory backlash following a number of high profile crypto platform failures in 2022 led to Japanese regulators issuing Binance with a warning letter for failing to attain full registration.A response to past difficulties in Japan, in particular relative to the failure of Mt.Gox in 2014, meant that crypto market traders were protected better by comparison with market participants overseas.

Korean crypto exchange Upbit launches BTC-ETH Duo Index

Dunamu, the operator of South Korea’s leading crypto exchange Upbit, announced today that it launched a new crypto price tracking service, Bitcoin-Ethereum Duo Index (Duo Index). The news was reported by the local media outlet Etoday.  The service tracks the two most prominent tokens, Bitcoin and Ethereum, each being the top performer and the runner-up in terms of market capitalization in the crypto asset market. It is a strategy index that equally weights Bitcoin and Ethereum, with their holding ratio updated to 1:1 every month. The weightings of the two cryptocurrencies in the index are subject to an adjustment factor, which is based on their prices. The BTC-ETC Duo Index is currently available on the Upbit Cryptocurrency Index (UBCI) website. Photo by Markus Winkler on UnsplashThe Federal Reserve’s approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in January has drawn significant attention from many investors, driving up the prices not only of Bitcoin but also Ethereum. Dunamu explained that this heightened interest surrounding Bitcoin and Ethereum is the reason behind its launch of the Duo Index. New tool to boost crypto portfolio’s performance Referencing the Duo Index can help investors estimate their own crypto assets portfolios and boost their performances based on the indicators it offers, including the winning rate of the two coins combined.   The current winning rate of the Duo Index stands at over 58%, which is three percentage points higher than that of the Upbit Market Index (UBMI), which tracks not only Bitcoin and Ethereum but also other altcoins. The high winning rate of the Duo Index demonstrates the bullish sentiment surrounding the two top coins. A Dunamu official stated that the company will continue to keep up with the crypto market trend and further release other strategy indices that would serve the emerging needs of the investors.
