In a crackdown on cryptocurrency-related crime, Binance, the world’s largest global exchange, has partnered with Thailand’s Royal Thai Police to aid them in dismantling a major criminal network behind a crypto scam.

Operation “Trust No One”

According to a blog post published by the exchange, the operation, code-named “Trust No One,” has not only resulted in the arrest of five key members of the syndicate but has also seized assets worth a staggering $277 million. Importantly, the operation is likely to offer restitution opportunities for more than 3,200 victims.

Binance collaborated closely with the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) and the United States’ Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) to combat these illicit activities. Police Lieutenant Colonel Thanatus Kangruambutr, an inspector at CCIB, expressed his appreciation for Binance’s involvement, underscoring the exchange’s role in the fight against scams and cybercrimes.

Successful collaborations

Tigran Gambaryan, Binance’s Head of Financial Crime Compliance, reaffirmed the exchange’s commitment to partnering with authorities worldwide to restore trust in the digital asset ecosystem. This operation adds to Binance’s growing list of successful collaborations in its efforts to combat crypto-related crimes, following the recovery and freezing of $450,000 in stolen assets linked to the Curve Finance hack in 2022.

In a separate case, Binance’s investigative team played a pivotal role in exposing a major cryptocurrency scam orchestrated by an extensive network of international criminal organizations. This investigation resulted in the arrest of suspects across 30 different locations in Bangkok and the provinces of Samut Prakan and Udon Thani. Binance provided critical information that facilitated these arrests, even sending an investigator to Thailand to support the process of obtaining arrest warrants.

This collaborative effort empowered the Royal Thai Police to confiscate illicit assets, which included 16 opulent residences, 12 high-end vehicles, and 16 million Thai Baht (approximately $440,000) in cash.

Notably, Binance’s proactive cooperation with law enforcement agencies has yielded an impressive average response time of just three days, surpassing the customary response times of traditional financial institutions. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the company stated: “Our recent support helped [the Royal Thai Police] to conclude two separate investigations, leading to the arrests of criminals behind major crypto scams.”

Ongoing issue

Cryptocurrency scams have been on the rise in Thailand, posing a substantial financial threat to its residents. Last month Thai authorities detained five foreigners due to their involvement in a $76 million crypto-related scam.

In August, Thailand’s Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES) issued Meta (the company behind Facebook) with a warning due to what it deemed to be an inadequate response by the social media giant in Thailand to the prevalence of crypto-related fraudulent ads on the platform.

Binance has been active in collaborating with law enforcement in various jurisdictions to combat crypto-related crime. Over the last three years, the exchange has actively cooperated with and provided assistance in more than 103,000 law enforcement investigations worldwide.

Although Thailand has witnessed a surge in cryptocurrency-related scams, the collaborative efforts between the Royal Thai Police and Binance serve as a commendable model for addressing these challenges going forward.

INDODAX snags full licensing in Indonesia

INDODAX, Indonesia’s largest virtual asset trading platform by trading volume, has acquired full licensing in Indonesia from the local regulator. That’s according to a report published by local media outlet VOI. The license, a Physical Crypto Asset Trader (PFAK) license, has been awarded to the company by Indonesia’s Commodity Futures Trading Supervisory Agency, better known as BAPPEBTI.  The license will place INDODAX in a complaint position within the Indonesian market, relative to local regulations. The business has been issued certificate number 10/BAPPEBTI/PFAK/12/2024 by the regulator, its approval certificate as a Physical Crypto Asset Trader.Photo by Mark König on UnsplashMandatory registration requirementIn December 2023 the authorities in Indonesia set out a mandatory requirement for crypto trading entities to register with the Commodity Future Exchange (CFX). CFX is Indonesia’s national crypto bourse, while INDODAX is a member. As of April 2024, 35 crypto exchanges had been registered with the regulator. CFX has been given the mandate to monitor crypto exchange operations, to safeguard investors by ensuring exchanges abide by local regulations. Fendy Tan, chief financial officer (CFO) at INDODAX commented on the firm’s recent licensing milestone, stating: "We are grateful to BAPPEBTI and CFX for the trust given through this full license. The long process that must be passed reflects our commitment to providing the best protection for users. The license number 10 also has a special meaning, which symbolizes perfection, and symbolizes the 10-year journey of INDODAX in leading the crypto industry in Indonesia."  Liquidity and SOP requirementsIn order to acquire this license INDODAX had to comply with BAPPEBTI Regulation Number 8 of 2021 and Number 13 of 2022. It has also had to ensure a minimum paid-up capital of 100 billion Indonesian Rupiahs ($6,158,000), and a minimum equity of IDR 50 billion ($3,079,000). Furthermore, the company has had to implement a set of standard operating procedures (SOPs), together with achieving ISO certification in accordance with global security standards, with specific emphasis on complying with regulations to safeguard customer funds according to the balances held on account of fiat currency and digital assets by INDODAX customers. INDODAX is understood to have 7.1 million customers while a transaction volume of 109 trillion Indonesian rupiahs was reached for the period January to November 2024. BAPPEBTI had extended a deadline for the crypto licensing of exchanges late last year, a move welcomed at the time by INDODAX CEO Oscar Darmawan. Darmawan said that the move would strengthen the industry by ensuring that market participants were compliant with recently introduced regulations. While this licensing milestone is a positive for INDODAX, the firm had faced challenges in 2024. In September it emerged that the platform had been compromised with the loss of around $18 million in digital assets. Meanwhile, the authorities in Indonesia had planned to switch crypto market oversight from BAPPEBTI to the Financial Services Authority (OJK) by Jan. 12. However, a recent report published by the Jakarta Globe suggests that the Indonesian government has yet to finalize this regulatory transfer.

Titi Financial Announces $TITI Airdrop

Titi Financial Announces $TITI AirdropTiti Financial, the team behind Titi Protocol, a project that aims to further its $TiUSD algorithmic stablecoin, announced that it is currently distributing the first round of airdrops of its $TITI governance token.Taking to social media, the Singapore-based project encouraged interested parties to check their eligibility for the airdrop on the project’s website. In a Medium blog post, the project stated: “In order to give back to the users who have supported us all the way, TiTi protocol has decided to conduct the first round of airdrops to community users.”An algorithmic stablecoinTiTi Protocol is a decentralized, 100% collateral-backed, ‘use-to-earn’ algorithmic stablecoin. It aims to provide diversified and decentralized financial services based on the crypto-native stablecoin system, with an autonomous monetary policy.Alongside $TITI as the project’s governance token, $TiUSD is the accompanying stablecoin issued by TiTi Protocol.Initial DEX offering (IDO)The airdrop runs until May 9. Once that process has been completed, the project intends to launch on mainnet through an initial DEX offering (IDO). IDO volume will be 10 million $TITI, 1% of total issuance, with an initial price per token of $0.06.Launching on the Ethereum blockchain, the IDO commences on May 10, with the sale running until 8:00 UTC on May 13. Buyers have until 08:00 UTC on May 14 to claim their tokens. Total token supply has been set at 1,000,000,000 $TITI. Purchase amount parameters have been set, with a minimum to maximum range extending from $100 to $3,000. The $TITI token can be purchased using USDC, USDT or DAI stablecoin. The project has advised participants to prepare by having an Ethereum compatible wallet available, such as MetaMask, Gnosis Safe or WalletConnect.$3.5 million fund raiseLast month, the project disclosed that it had been successful in raising $3.5 million in funding. The funding round was led by California-based Spartan Group, a blockchain advisory and asset management firm. Other venture investors included SevenX Ventures, Incuba Alpha, DeFi Alliance, Agnostic Fund, Fourth Revolution Capital and Solidity Venture. A number of individual investors associated with Alpha Venture DAO and 0x1b from Fold Finance also participated.Overcoming algorithmic design shortcomingsIt’s interesting to see a renewed interest in algorithmic stablecoins after the epic collapse of Terra Luna in 2022. Additionally, it’s noteworthy that an institutional investment appetite exists given that backdrop. Lead investor Spartan Group cited the depegging risk alongside poor liquidity as being a known problem where algorithmic stablecoins are concerned. However, the investor believes that the Titi Protocol has the necessary design elements incorporated to counteract these issues. One of the key features of the protocol is that liquidity providers only need to provide single sided liquidity to Titi automated market makers (AMMs). The protocol itself covers the other side of that process, doing the math to mint the equivalent value of TiUSD.In April, the project also announced a partnership with Alpha Venture DAO. The decentralized venture capital fund is financed by its own community. Furthermore, Titi Finance can call on the expertise and skills of the DAOs members.Photo by CoinWire Japan on Unsplash

OKX shores up App security following bug discovery

OKX shores up App security following bug discoveryCryptocurrency exchange OKX has swiftly responded to a recently uncovered security flaw by releasing an updated version (v6.45.0) of its iOS app.User data and asset vulnerabilityThe flaw was identified by Web3 and blockchain security specialist CertiK. It posed a Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability that had the potential to compromise sensitive user data and crypto assets. Notwithstanding that, no user assets were lost or security compromised.Taking to the X social media platform on Tuesday, CertiK wrote:”Attention! We urge users of OKX wallets to update their iOS app to the latest version immediately. Earlier this month, we identified and reported a critical Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability in the OKX iOS App, leading to potential compromise of sensitive data and crypto assets.”Photo by FLY:D on UnsplashPrompt responseRecognizing the risk, OKX has acted promptly to rectify the issue and commit to protecting user assets. It too followed up on social media with its own announcement:”Thanks @Certik for the note. We’ve completed the relevant upgrade & this is no longer an issue. We have verified that this did not impact any customer assets. The fix has been deployed to iOS version 6.45.0 & we recommend you update the app asap.”Ongoing exploitsThis security incident has played out amid a backdrop that has seen a worrying number of hacks, exploits and vulnerabilities in the crypto space. In recent weeks, hacks at HTX (formerly Huobi), cross-chain bridge Heco and Poloniex have accounted for millions of dollars in losses. As recently as last week, users of the Ledger hardware wallet were told by the company not to connect to decentralized applications as it had discovered that a malicious version of its Ledger Connect software had been distributed.Industry collaborationThe collaboration between OKX and CertiK in addressing this security concern is demonstrative of how industry actors are having to cooperate in order to deal effectively with these vulnerabilities and threats.Transparent communication and a swift response in this instance are likely to have played a role in minimizing any potential loss. In a noteworthy development, OKX, in collaboration with Tether, has collaborated with the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) to freeze $225 million in USDT tokens. This unprecedented action primarily targeted a human trafficking syndicate in Southeast Asia, illustrating the increasing cooperation between crypto entities and law enforcement in addressing illegal activities involving digital currencies. The immediate resolution of the iOS app vulnerability in this instance resulted in no loss occurring. That outcome underscores the importance of the prioritization of user safety and data security. With the updated app version (v6.45.0) now available, users can proceed with their crypto transactions with renewed confidence in the platform’s security measures. As the cryptocurrency landscape evolves, crypto platforms and platform users will need to remain vigilant in order to safeguard and protect funds.
