Binance Collaborates with Thai Police to Bust $277 Million Crypto Scam

Policy & Regulation·October 04, 2023, 2:20 AM

In a crackdown on cryptocurrency-related crime, Binance, the world’s largest global exchange, has partnered with Thailand’s Royal Thai Police to aid them in dismantling a major criminal network behind a crypto scam.

Operation “Trust No One”

According to a blog post published by the exchange, the operation, code-named “Trust No One,” has not only resulted in the arrest of five key members of the syndicate but has also seized assets worth a staggering $277 million. Importantly, the operation is likely to offer restitution opportunities for more than 3,200 victims.

Binance collaborated closely with the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) and the United States’ Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) to combat these illicit activities. Police Lieutenant Colonel Thanatus Kangruambutr, an inspector at CCIB, expressed his appreciation for Binance’s involvement, underscoring the exchange’s role in the fight against scams and cybercrimes.

Successful collaborations

Tigran Gambaryan, Binance’s Head of Financial Crime Compliance, reaffirmed the exchange’s commitment to partnering with authorities worldwide to restore trust in the digital asset ecosystem. This operation adds to Binance’s growing list of successful collaborations in its efforts to combat crypto-related crimes, following the recovery and freezing of $450,000 in stolen assets linked to the Curve Finance hack in 2022.

In a separate case, Binance’s investigative team played a pivotal role in exposing a major cryptocurrency scam orchestrated by an extensive network of international criminal organizations. This investigation resulted in the arrest of suspects across 30 different locations in Bangkok and the provinces of Samut Prakan and Udon Thani. Binance provided critical information that facilitated these arrests, even sending an investigator to Thailand to support the process of obtaining arrest warrants.

This collaborative effort empowered the Royal Thai Police to confiscate illicit assets, which included 16 opulent residences, 12 high-end vehicles, and 16 million Thai Baht (approximately $440,000) in cash.

Notably, Binance’s proactive cooperation with law enforcement agencies has yielded an impressive average response time of just three days, surpassing the customary response times of traditional financial institutions. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the company stated: “Our recent support helped [the Royal Thai Police] to conclude two separate investigations, leading to the arrests of criminals behind major crypto scams.”

Ongoing issue

Cryptocurrency scams have been on the rise in Thailand, posing a substantial financial threat to its residents. Last month Thai authorities detained five foreigners due to their involvement in a $76 million crypto-related scam.

In August, Thailand’s Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES) issued Meta (the company behind Facebook) with a warning due to what it deemed to be an inadequate response by the social media giant in Thailand to the prevalence of crypto-related fraudulent ads on the platform.

Binance has been active in collaborating with law enforcement in various jurisdictions to combat crypto-related crime. Over the last three years, the exchange has actively cooperated with and provided assistance in more than 103,000 law enforcement investigations worldwide.

Although Thailand has witnessed a surge in cryptocurrency-related scams, the collaborative efforts between the Royal Thai Police and Binance serve as a commendable model for addressing these challenges going forward.

Intella X Explores Ways to Integrate YGG’s Soulbound Reputation Tokens into Its Wallet

Intella X Explores Ways to Integrate YGG’s Soulbound Reputation Tokens into Its WalletIntella X, a South Korean Web3 gaming platform, has announced its partnership with Yield Guild Games (YGG), a leading DeFi-powered gaming guild.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashBoosting Intella X’s global presenceThis collaborative effort is expected to boost Intella X’s presence in the global Web3 sector. YGG, boasting a membership base of over 450,000 worldwide and collaborating with more than 80 gaming companies, recently launched Superquest, a new way to earn in-game rewards. Superquest awards soulbound reputation tokens to gamers based on their level of community engagement and contributions. The two organizations will explore ways to integrate YGG soulbound reputation tokens into Intella X Wallet (IX Wallet), a Web3 wallet designated for the Intella X platform. In an attempt to expand its ecosystem, Intella X has soft-launched the Android and web versions of IX Wallet. Furthermore, the Korean Web3 platform in February joined forces with IndiGG, a sub-decentralized autonomous organization of YGG in India.Neowiz’s Q2 financialsIn the midst of these developments, Neowiz, the parent company of Intella X, last week disclosed its financial performance for the second quarter. The company garnered revenues amounting to KRW 70.1 billion ($52.7 million), signifying a year-on-year decrease of 0.2%. Neowiz incurred an operating loss of KRW 4.9 billion during the same period, venturing into negative territory in Q2. This setback can be attributed to escalated marketing expenditures associated with the launch of the mobile role-playing game “Brown Dust 2” and the third-year anniversary celebration of the MMORPG title “Kingdom.” The latter is the brainchild of game developer FOW Games, a company Neowiz acquired in May.Meanwhile, Neowiz’s Q2 net income recorded an 8% year-over-year increase, totaling KRW 22.4 billion. This one-time gain is due to the sale of certain shares the company owned in another entity as part of the wider FOW Games acquisition strategy.Path to recoveryIn the latter half of this year, Neowiz is gearing up for recovery, channeling its focus into in-house developed titles. A key highlight among these is the imminent launch of “Lies of P” on September 19. As the launch date of this soulslike video game, inspired by the narrative of Pinocchio, draws near, the company is poised to offer game packages for pre-sale commencing September 17. These packages will be accessible both online and in-person through the e-commerce platform SSG.com and the warehouse chain E-Mart Traders. An extensive global marketing campaign is also in the works, with Neowiz set to participate in Germany’s Gamescom 2023 later this month.

The C1 Fund is ready to deploy substantial capital, ranging from $20 million to $50 million, to acquire private holdings in crypto companies. The fund is only interested in targeting companies that boast valuations of $300 million and above from their most recent funding rounds. The crypto venture capital fund was co-founded by former Coinbase executives. Off the back of recent bullish momentum within crypto markets, the C1 Fund is reportedly eyeing significant discounts of nearly 80% on its investments.Share purchase offerThe fund has extended an offer to purchase Animoca Brand shares at approximately $1.12, representing a 75% markdown from its last capital raise where shares were sold at around $4.50.A few years ago, Animoca Brands, a firm that concentrates on blockchain gaming, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and the metaverse, had been listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX). However, in 2020, the company listing was removed due to the swapping of stock for crypto tokens. It still has involvement with Australia through equity investment from Australian firms Koda Capital and KTM Ventures. In September, Hong Kong-based venture capital firm CMCC Global led a $20 million funding round into Animoca. At the time, it was suggested that funding would go towards further development of Mocaverse, an Animoca project involving the development of Web3-native tools geared towards the gaming and entertainment sectors.Following some market uncertainty regarding the financial health of the company earlier this year, Animoca provided an update on its financial position, clarifying that it held $3.4 billion in cash and assets.Chainalysis interestThe strategic move by the C1 Fund aligns with the recent uptick in the crypto space. Bitcoin (BTC), the market leader, surpassed the $40,000 price point in the first week of December, propelling the overall crypto market capitalization to over $1.6 trillion. At the time of writing, BTC hovers just over $40,000.Similarly, the fund is weighing up an investment in American blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis, offering to acquire its shares at a substantial 63% discount from its latest capital raise.Beyond traditional crypto assets, NFTs are experiencing a surge in market interest. A recent report by DappRadar revealed that NFT trading volume approached $1 billion in November, signaling a notable shift in user behavior. The average value of NFT transactions also witnessed a substantial increase from $126 to $270 in November. The C1 Secondaries Fund was established in March, targeting $500 million worth of investment in blockchain, crypto, Web3 and fintech. As the C1 Secondaries Fund strategically positions itself amid the crypto market boom, its pursuit of discounted investments in industry giants like Animoca Brands and Chainalysis reflects the fund’s confidence in the sustained growth and potential of the digital assets sector.
