Emphasis on Asia

Murray set out her predictions for the coming year in a thread of posts on the X social media platform on Monday. This foresight coincides with a notable upswing in interest from traditional financial institutions within the digital currency market, especially in the APAC region.

Murray predicts an unprecedented surge in cryptocurrency adoption within financial institutions, underscoring a shifting landscape where companies increasingly leverage cross-border payment solutions powered by blockchain technology. She wrote:

”Entering 2024, we are expecting to see a surge in institutional adoption of crypto by financial institutions, especially in the APAC region. This includes the greater usage of cross-border payments among companies.”

Web2 firms to integrate blockchain

This departure from traditional payment methods signifies a growing confidence in the security and efficiency offered by digital currencies. Ripple’s APAC executive emphasizes the escalating investments by well-established Web2 companies and legacy payment institutions as they integrate blockchain utility into their offerings.

“More than ever, leading Web2 companies and legacy payments institutions are investing resources to integrate blockchain utility into their services — ‘Nearly half of APAC finance leaders expect blockchain to have a significant impact on business in the next 3 years.’” she stated.

This positive outlook is reinforced by proactive measures taken by countries like Singapore and Hong Kong, positioning themselves as global leaders in cryptocurrency and blockchain adoption.

Crypto ETFs

The continued rollout of crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) adds to the level of institutional adoption that has occurred in 2023 and is likely moving forward into 2024. Hong Kong has been the regional leader in this regard within APAC. The Hong Kong Stock Exchange was the first platform in Asia to offer crypto asset exposure by way of an ETF in December of last year. Since then, several such ETFs have been listed within the Chinese autonomous territory.

Last month, multinational investment bank UBS joined industry peers like HSBC in following suit to offer institutional clients access to crypto-linked ETFs. Going into 2024, most industry commentators seem to be convinced that the emergence of BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, in promoting a spot bitcoin ETF in the United States means that approval is likely over the course of the next few months. That milestone will undoubtedly have positive reverberations for institutional digital asset adoption in the APAC region also.

Strategic importance of APAC

The APAC region holds strategic importance for Ripple’s expansion plans, given its rapid technological advancement and openness to innovation. In Singapore, the company received “in principle” approval from the Monetary Authority of Singapore in June. That was upgraded to full license approval in October.

Singapore and Hong Kong, among other countries in the region, have emerged as frontrunners in the global cryptocurrency market, fostering regulatory environments conducive to blockchain innovation.

These factors underscore the region’s crucial role in Ripple’s global strategy, aligning with the company’s vision and objectives as it seeks to grow its business.

Coinone’s recent addition of USDT/KRW trading pair expected to reduce Kimchi premium

Coinone’s recent addition of USDT/KRW trading pair expected to reduce Kimchi premiumCoinone, a major South Korean cryptocurrency exchange, listed USDT, a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar on the platform’s Korean won-denominated market on Thursday (local time). Its listing price was KRW 1,289.Tether Limited, the company behind USDT, asserts that their stablecoin is “backed 100% by Tether’s reserves.” These reserves comprise a variety of real-world assets such as U.S. Treasuries, overnight reverse repurchase agreements, corporate bonds and precious metals. According to CoinMarketCap, USDT’s market capitalization stands at $89 billion, ranking it third in the cryptocurrency market, just behind Bitcoin and Ethereum.Photo by DrawKit Illustrations on UnsplashFirst to list USDT/KRW trading pairDespite the significance of USDT in the cryptocurrency market, Korean exchange users have faced the limitation of not being able to purchase the stablecoin using Korean won, although these exchanges did offer markets denominated in USDT. This limitation has prompted Koreans to turn to foreign cryptocurrency services for acquiring USDT. With Coinone’s latest move, the platform has become the first to facilitate USDT/KRW trading among the nation’s five fiat-to-crypto Korean exchanges — Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit and Gopax.Regarding this development, Kwon O-hoon, Managing Partner at the law firm Cha and Kwon, told local news outlet Decenter that there seem to be no particular legal concerns with the crypto exchange’s engagement in USDT transactions. This perspective stems from the absence of stablecoin regulations in the country.Reducing the Kimchi premiumAccording to Decenter, crypto experts anticipate that the introduction of USDT/KRW trading will help in reducing the Kimchi premium, a term referring to the discrepancy in cryptocurrency prices on South Korean exchanges compared to those in foreign exchanges. For instance, according to data from CoinNess, the average price of BTC on Korean exchanges is around KRW 51,177,250. This is about 2.34% higher than its average price on foreign exchanges, which stands at KRW 50,005,909. This difference means that users on Korean exchanges need to pay an additional KRW 1,171,340 to buy one BTC, compared to what they would pay on international platforms. However, the newly added trading pair will streamline transactions between exchanges, making it simpler for investors to engage in arbitrage. This ease of transfer is expected to lead to more balanced pricing across different markets, reducing the Kimchi premium. In light of this development, Jo Dong-hyeon, CEO of blockchain company Undefined Labs, said various institutions and blockchain projects will likely find USDT increasingly useful as a store of value, given USDT facilitates easy transfers between different exchanges.

Hong Kong regulator set to grant additional crypto exchange licenses

Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) is gearing up to issue additional crypto exchange licenses before year’s end.  11 applicants under considerationThat’s according to SFC CEO Julia Leung. Leung commented on the matter while speaking with Hong Kong-based online news portal, HK01, on Oct. 7. She stated that 11 companies are considered as applicants for licensing and new progress is expected before the end of the year. Overall, 16 firms have applied for licenses and of these, the regulator is indicating that 11 will likely be awarded licenses at this stage. The 11 firms underwent reviews carried out by the SFC in August to determine and ensure their compliance with the current regulatory framework. The virtual asset service providers (VASPs) inspected included HKbitEX, PantherTrade, Accumulus, DFX Labs, Bixin.com, EX.IO, YAX, WhaleFin and Matrixport HK. Overseas applicants inspected included Crypto.com and Bullish. The regulator’s intention is to work towards an SFC objective of drafting these VASPs into the regulated environment established by the SFC. Leung explained that the SFC intends to award licenses in batches. Those applicants who have already had SFC on-site reviews carried out have been asked by the regulator to rectify issues identified based on the regulators findings. "Applicants who do not meet the requirements will lose their qualifications for licensing, while applicants who meet the requirements will be granted a license conditionally,” Leung told HK01.Photo by Bowen Chin on UnsplashSFC roadmapLeung also told the media outlet that relative to over-the-counter (OTC) crypto services, a new licensing system has been put in place to regulate OTC custody provision. The SFC CEO outlined that the organization’s roadmap for the period 2024 to 2026 incorporates plans to promote the tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs), further advance regulations relative to virtual asset platforms and gain further understanding of Web3 technologies and regional blockchains. Last week the regulator awarded a license to HKVAX, allowing it to join OSL and HashKey as the only fully licensed VASPs in Hong Kong thus far. While Hong Kong has made great strides over the course of the past two years to work towards becoming a regional hub for crypto businesses, it has faced criticism recently for having an overly restrictive regulatory framework.  Regulators felt the need to tighten up regulations in the aftermath of the collapse of the JPEX crypto exchange which implicated fraud and resulted in around 2,600 Hong Kong residents experiencing financial losses in the region of $200 million. The regulatory requirements have resulted in some platforms turning away from attempts to acquire licensing. In May, Gate.io’s local platform Gate.HK ceased operations in Hong Kong, while withdrawing its licensing application. In July HKX followed suit, advising its users to withdraw their funds from the platform, while notifying them that it had withdrawn its application for Type 1 and Type 7 licensing, as well as VASP licensing.
