SBI Holdings and TradeFinex Partner to Create a Trade Finance JV in Japan

Japanese financial services conglomerate SBI Holdings has joined forces with UAE-based TradeFinex to establish a dynamic joint venture. The objective of the partnership is to propel the widespread adoption of the XDC Network within Japan’s trade finance sector.

Details of the agreement between the firms emerged last Friday. The strategic collaboration represents a move toward harnessing blockchain technology to infuse transparency, efficiency, and accessibility into the fabric of trade finance and supply chain management.

At its core, the XDC Network stands as an enterprise blockchain platform which is compatible with the Ethereum virtual machine (EVM). In recent times, the XDC Network has cultivated partnerships with several international organizations, including the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). It has pioneered solutions aimed at cost reduction, transaction acceleration, and transparency augmentation within the trade finance sphere.

Building upon related partnership

SBI Holdings, deeply ingrained in Japan’s financial services sector, has taken significant strides to embrace the potential of blockchain technology. Earlier this year, its subsidiary, SBI VC Trade, partnered with the XDC Network, becoming the inaugural Japanese exchange to facilitate the cryptocurrency asset XDC. Building upon this previous collaboration, SBI VC Trade has been proactive in championing the expansion of the XDC Network’s presence in Japan.

The freshly minted joint venture between SBI Holdings and TradeFinex has the potential to serve as a catalyst for further XDC Network growth in Japan. A central goal is to localize XDC Network-related information, thereby rendering it more accessible to Japanese businesses and investors.

Additionally, the venture is actively scouting for cryptocurrency exchanges who are prepared to use and promote the XDC network, further amplifying its adoption. Exploring collaborations with subnet and layer-2 enterprises forms an integral part of their strategy.

 

Japan’s evolving stance on blockchain

The timing of this collaboration coincides with Japan’s evolving stance on blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies. Emerging reports indicate the Japanese government’s contemplation of allowing startups to raise capital through cryptocurrency tokens, marking a seismic shift away from conventional stock listing processes.

In April the Japanese government released a whitepaper on Web3, in its efforts to explore ways to foster innovation in the emerging sector. Furthermore, Japan’s National Tax Agency has made adjustments to its cryptocurrency-related tax code, underscoring a proactive stance toward regulating the cryptocurrency industry. Related to that, the country’s Financial Services Agency (FSA) has been exploring tax exemptions relative to unrealized crypto gains.

Japan has become known historically as a center of technological innovation. There have been soundings recently that it can rediscover its abilities in that respect through the development of Web3.

The strategic alliance between SBI Holdings and TradeFinex charts a promising trajectory for the XDC Network within Japan’s trade finance sector. Anchored in a project that aspires to offer innovation, transparency, and operational efficiency, this joint venture offers considerable potential to spearhead the adoption of blockchain technology within one of the world’s most prominent financial markets.

Notably, Progmat now counts among its stakeholders some of Japan’s major financial institutions, including the second and third largest banks, SMBC and Mizuho.The scope of this venture extends beyond the confines of Japanese users, potentially transforming Japan into Binance’s stablecoin issuance hub. The initiative has emerged against the backdrop of recent regulatory events in the United States, notably the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) instructing Paxos Trust to halt the issuance of the Binance USD (BUSD) stablecoin earlier this year. The timeline for the launch of Japanese Binance stablecoins is set for 2024, contingent upon Binance Japan obtaining an Electronic Settlement Methods Transaction Business Provider license.Japan has been making strides in its regulatory landscape to accommodate various types of stablecoins, including those issued by banks and trusts. Under this framework, stablecoins issued by trusts like Mitsubishi UFJ Trust enjoy some unique advantages, such as exemption from licensing requirements and the absence of Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols for stablecoin transfers. Furthermore, these stablecoins are backed by ring-fenced reserve assets, mirroring the approach taken by Paxos Trust.The underlying Progmat blockchain technology is rooted in the Corda enterprise blockchain. However, MUFG has been actively collaborating with DataChain and TOKI technology to facilitate stablecoin issuance on multiple public blockchains, allowing for cross-chain transfers. The initial plan encompasses blockchain platforms like Ethereum, followed by Cosmos, Polygon, Avalanche, and others. This development raises questions about the potential elevation of Binance’s BNB Chain in the broader blockchain ecosystem.Tatsuya Saito, Founder and CEO of Progmat, remarked on the collaboration, stating:“We believe that the new stablecoin from this collaboration will be a step forward in advancing the Web 3.0. Progmat is a neutral infrastructure that enables the issuance of various brands of stablecoins with the greatest flexibility of use and the least risk of de-pegging, it does not compete with players issuing their own stablecoins.”Saito also hinted at other stablecoin projects in the pipeline with Japanese financial institutions and partners, underscoring Binance’s dominant position in the cryptocurrency trading world.Expanding presence in JapanBinance Japan, which recently acquired an existing crypto exchange and rebranded it as Binance Japan, currently lists 34 tokens. In addressing the WebX conference in July, Binance Founder and CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) recognized the positive regulatory environment that exists in Japan relative to Web3.From Binance’s perspective, this latest collaboration represents a substantial win, especially after the loss of its own stablecoin. Binance has been promoting lesser-known stablecoins on its exchange by reducing transaction costs, a strategy with inherent risks. In contrast, the alliance with MUFG, a globally significant bank, adds credibility and a different level of assurance to stablecoins.

HKMA incentivizes tokenization in Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), the Chinese autonomous territory’s central bank, has launched a scheme which subsidizes projects endeavoring to issue tokenized bonds. Grants of up to $321KThe objective behind the initiative, which was announced in a statement published to the HKMA website on Nov. 28, is to nurture moves towards tokenization within Hong Kong’s capital markets. The initiative, titled the Digital Bond Grant Scheme (DBGS), can be accessed by financial services firms for up to two digital bond issuances. The grant may cover up to 50% of what the HKMA describes as “Eligible Expenses” incurred in the process of issuing and establishing the digital bond. A maximum grant level of HK$2.5 million ($321,000) has been established. Digital bond issuers are entitled to the full grant where both basic requirements and additional requirements have been met. A half grant of up to HK$1.25 million ($160,600) has been established for those issuers who have met the basic requirements. The scheme has been opened to applicants from Nov. 28 onwards, with it having been set out to run for an initial period of three years. To fulfill the basic requirements, a bond must be issued in Hong Kong and either be issued on a decentralized ledger technology (DLT) platform, or the project itself must be based in Hong Kong while being involved in the running of a DLT platform.Photo by Fidel Fernando on UnsplashAdditional requirementsThe HKMA has listed four items under additional requirements. These include a need for a digital bond to be issued on a DLT platform run by an entity that is not an associate of the issuer. The bond issuance, whether effected in one instance or in tranches, must account for a value of greater than HK$1 billion ($128.5 million).  The bond must be issued to greater than five investors who are not connected with or associates of the issuer. Finally, the bond must be issued on either the Hong Kong Stock Exchange or a virtual asset trading platform (VATP) licensed and regulated by the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC). Project EvergreenIn 2021, the HKMA launched Project Evergreen, an initiative geared towards exploring how DLT could enhance processes and efficiency within capital markets. On Nov. 28 the HKMA published an update on the project, outlining that since its foundation, tokenization had gained considerable momentum, with $10 billion in tokenized bonds having been issued globally within the last decade. The Hong Kong government carried out two tokenized bond issuances as part of the project. Due to the second issuance being seven times larger than the first one, the HKMA believes that this accounted for institutional investors being attracted to the bond issuance.  In the update, the HKMA outlined that going forward, the plan is to promote wider adoption of what is viable, within the confines of what is possible. The central bank asserted that the DBGS was established on this basis. The update stated: "To fully reap the potential of DLT, we need to keep pushing the boundaries and explore further innovation." In a related development, a report published by the Financial Times on Nov. 28 suggests that the Hong Kong government is considering offering crypto tax breaks to hedge funds and private equity funds.

Shots Fired in New OKX Ad CampaignGlobal crypto spot and derivatives exchange OKX has launched a daring ad campaign that sets US-based rival exchange Coinbase firmly in its cross hairs.The formerly Chinese and now Seychelles-based exchange has pushed out a global ad campaign along the following theme: “The system doesn’t need an upgrade; it needs a rewrite.” The ads were launched on Tuesday, pointing out the ills of the traditional, centralized financial system.Photo by Merakist on UnsplashCrypto exchange rivalryThe advert doesn’t explicitly call out its rival, Coinbase. However, it is nuanced in taking a subtle dig at the US-based exchange. Exactly two months prior, on March 9, Coinbase released its own ad campaign. Coinbase claimed in its ad that “it’s time to update the system,” with OKX’s subsequent commercial having been carefully worded to poke fun at the Coinbase commercial.With a number of high profile epic failures of crypto businesses over the past twelve months, including the fall of FTX, the remaining exchanges in the business have been tripping over themselves in an effort to convince the alternative asset-investing public that theirs is the safest platform upon which they can securely trade.In its sixty second commercial, OKX poses the question “why don’t we change everything?”, set up by its claim that the conventional finance system is broken.The last of the big spendersThere’s been a notable change of strategy in the marketing activities of crypto businesses since the height of the last crypto bull run. Gone are the marketing excesses exemplified most by the now bankrupt FTX exchange.FTX demonstrated itself to be a profligate spender on all manner and means of marketing, particularly during 2021 and 2022. It paid Wall Street investor and Shark Tank star Kevin O’Leary $15 million to be a spokesperson for the company. Similar deals were struck with a range of celebrities including former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal, NFL stars such as former New England Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady, and a host of others.At the height of its marketing opulence, the fraudulently run firm signed a $135 million sponsorship deal that provided it with the naming rights to the home stadium of the NBA’s Miami Heat. 2022's Super Bowl, one of the world’s largest single marketing opportunities, saw FTX and others pay out big on advertising spend.By contrast, this year’s Super Bowl was almost a complete washout as far as crypto business participation was concerned. Meanwhile, all of the celebrities that featured in FTX’s marketing activities have found themselves the subject of multi-million dollar class action lawsuits filed by FTX creditors.A more sobering marketing strategyDespite the reputational damage that crypto has suffered due to these high profile failures, firms like OKX and Coinbase have continued to maintain a responsible level of advertising and marketing activity.That’s best exemplified by OKX’s ongoing marketing relationships with McLaren’s Formula One racing team and Manchester City Football Club. In March, US-based crypto exchange Kraken announced a marketing partnership with the Williams Formula One racing team.Crypto.com is probably the only crypto firm that spent excessively during the last bull run yet has continued to maintain a relatively high level of marketing activity. Much of that may have been due to commitments it had made during a more buoyant market. Notwithstanding that, the firm did fall foul of the UK advertising regulator, who banned its NFT promotion in December 2022.
