SBI Holdings and TradeFinex Partner to Create a Trade Finance JV in Japan

Web3 & Enterprise·October 03, 2023, 1:22 AM

Japanese financial services conglomerate SBI Holdings has joined forces with UAE-based TradeFinex to establish a dynamic joint venture. The objective of the partnership is to propel the widespread adoption of the XDC Network within Japan’s trade finance sector.

Details of the agreement between the firms emerged last Friday. The strategic collaboration represents a move toward harnessing blockchain technology to infuse transparency, efficiency, and accessibility into the fabric of trade finance and supply chain management.

At its core, the XDC Network stands as an enterprise blockchain platform which is compatible with the Ethereum virtual machine (EVM). In recent times, the XDC Network has cultivated partnerships with several international organizations, including the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). It has pioneered solutions aimed at cost reduction, transaction acceleration, and transparency augmentation within the trade finance sphere.

Building upon related partnership

SBI Holdings, deeply ingrained in Japan’s financial services sector, has taken significant strides to embrace the potential of blockchain technology. Earlier this year, its subsidiary, SBI VC Trade, partnered with the XDC Network, becoming the inaugural Japanese exchange to facilitate the cryptocurrency asset XDC. Building upon this previous collaboration, SBI VC Trade has been proactive in championing the expansion of the XDC Network’s presence in Japan.

The freshly minted joint venture between SBI Holdings and TradeFinex has the potential to serve as a catalyst for further XDC Network growth in Japan. A central goal is to localize XDC Network-related information, thereby rendering it more accessible to Japanese businesses and investors.

Additionally, the venture is actively scouting for cryptocurrency exchanges who are prepared to use and promote the XDC network, further amplifying its adoption. Exploring collaborations with subnet and layer-2 enterprises forms an integral part of their strategy.

Japan’s evolving stance on blockchain

The timing of this collaboration coincides with Japan’s evolving stance on blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies. Emerging reports indicate the Japanese government’s contemplation of allowing startups to raise capital through cryptocurrency tokens, marking a seismic shift away from conventional stock listing processes.

In April the Japanese government released a whitepaper on Web3, in its efforts to explore ways to foster innovation in the emerging sector. Furthermore, Japan’s National Tax Agency has made adjustments to its cryptocurrency-related tax code, underscoring a proactive stance toward regulating the cryptocurrency industry. Related to that, the country’s Financial Services Agency (FSA) has been exploring tax exemptions relative to unrealized crypto gains.

Japan has become known historically as a center of technological innovation. There have been soundings recently that it can rediscover its abilities in that respect through the development of Web3.

The strategic alliance between SBI Holdings and TradeFinex charts a promising trajectory for the XDC Network within Japan’s trade finance sector. Anchored in a project that aspires to offer innovation, transparency, and operational efficiency, this joint venture offers considerable potential to spearhead the adoption of blockchain technology within one of the world’s most prominent financial markets.

Crypto.com faces criticism for forcing through 2021 token burn rollback

Recent developments relative to governance of the CRO token, a native token belonging to the Cronos blockchain, have proven controversial, with many in the community unhappy with the actions of Singapore-headquartered Crypto.com.Photo by Markus Winkler on UnsplashProposal controversyThe controversy surrounds a proposal put forward by Crypto.com, which originally developed the Cronos blockchain in 2021, to mint 70 billion CRO tokens. The move would effectively roll back a CRO token burn that took place in 2021. The governance process applicable to the proposal meant that CRO token holders could vote on the proposal between March 2 and March 16. For the majority of that voting period, the outcome appeared to be uncertain. The “yes” vote had a narrow lead, but it would have been insufficient to reach the required 33.4% quorum of eligible votes. Exceeding the quorumHowever, at 14:00 UTC on Sunday, a last-minute influx of 3.35 billion tokens tipped the balance firmly in favor of the proposal while well exceeding the minimum turnout as 70.18% of eligible votes were cast. 61.18% voted in favor, with 17.61% against. Many CRO token holders who opposed the proposal are aggrieved at the manner in which this late voting surge came about. It’s understood that these last-minute votes came from blockchain validators controlled by Crypto.com. Crypto.com is understood to hold in the region of 80% of the voting power. In exercising that voting clout, many CRO holders feel that it has undermined the will of the community. Some commentators believe that increasing the token supply will result in a loss of trust in the project, damaging investor confidence going forward. Earlier this month, Crypto.com CEO Kris Marszalek responded to community pushback against the proposal. Marszalek suggested that the proposal ties in with an overall strategy for the success of the Cronos blockchain and its CRO token in the long term.  He pointed to four items that are relevant in achieving success for an altcoin like CRO. These included finding product-market fit, the need to redeploy free cashflows, successfully launching exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and participating in reserve-building initiatives.  ‘Free to vote and free to sell’The strategy relies upon building demand in order to achieve longer-term success. On X, Marszalek wrote: “People who do not agree that this is the right approach are free to vote & free to sell. We will stay laser focused on building towards new ATHs [all-time-highs].” In another X post on March 19, the Crypto.com CEO outlined that the company generated $1.5 billion in revenue in 2024 while servicing the needs of 140 million users on the platform. The company spent $700 million on branding, user acquisition and user incentives in 2024. Its operations turned a net profit of $300 million.  Crypto.com has also made further headway on the compliance front over the course of the past week. The company received licensing approval in Dubai to offer derivatives from the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA). On March 17 the company announced that it had successfully achieved Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) registration with the Argentine regulator.

Bitcoin layer-2 project Elastos sees ELA token surge

Bitcoin layer-2 project Elastos sees ELA token surgeSingaporean blockchain developer Elastos has unveiled its BeL2 layer-2 network set to run on top of the Bitcoin blockchain, eventually prompting a token price surge.50% increaseThe project aims to address challenges such as transaction volume limitations and the complexity of programmable contracts within the Bitcoin ecosystem. Despite the initial muted response from the crypto community after the late November announcement, Elastos’ native token, ELA, has experienced an extraordinary surge on Wednesday. Over the course of the past 24 hours, the token’s unit price has jumped from $2.06 to $3.09. That represents a 50% increase.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashBringing smart contracts to BitcoinOn Dec. 2, the project released its BeL2 whitepaper, describing it as “a transformative approach to enhancing Bitcoin’s functionality.” BeL2 has the potential to bring about significant advancements by leveraging SmartWeb technology to introduce staking solutions and incorporate zero-knowledge proof technology.A zk proof is a cryptographic method through which one party can prove to another party that a particular statement is true, all the while avoiding the leakage of any additional information aside from confirming the statement is true. Up until now, zk proofs have been largely the preserve of Ethereum-centric projects.Alongside zk proofs, BeL2 will utilize Bitcoin-powered Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) smart contracts. This approach is expected to expedite transactions within the network and introduce governance through a decentralized model.BeL2 roadmapThe roadmap for BeL2 includes a three-month development phase for a proof-of-concept, followed by an additional three months dedicated to the decentralization of relayers. These relayers, acting as third-party services facilitating communication and data transactions between different blockchain networks, play a crucial role in the overall implementation of BeL2.Elastos envisions BeL2 as a Layer 2 network built on Bitcoin, introducing sophisticated BTC transactions on its blockchain. Beyond staking, the network aims to provide direct yield and affordable transactions on native decentralized applications. The move marks a significant shift, allowing Bitcoin holders to stake their assets directly, unlocking potential value exceeding $700 billion.Looking ahead, Elastos plans to chart the decentralized finance (DeFi) course on BTC by enabling smart contract deployment and irreversible digital agreements between participants. As interest in Bitcoin continues to rise, driven by innovations like inscriptions and spot ETF discussions in the United States, Elastos’ BeL2 initiative is garnering greater attention, relative to the potential to usher in a new era of possibilities for the world’s most popular digital currency. The project was founded in 2017 by Rong Chen, a former senior software engineer at Microsoft. Taking to the X social media platform earlier this month, Chen wrote:“I don’t see any other paths to the final #Web3 destination except:(1) A #BTC merge mining blockchain, plus smart-contract sidechains as needed;(2) A #SmartWeb operating system (OS) to facilitate personal node to own data, plus personal-node to personal-node direct communication links;(3) Personal Cloud Compute (#PC2) Runtime sandbox, so individuals are on the same footing as big brothers;(4) Digital goods software-development-kits (embedded OS #SDKs), entrusting your data to nobody else but yourself, i.e., your own code to check access tickets/tokens before loading and rendering data.”The Elastos ecosystem employs three-layer consensus mechanisms: auxiliary proof-of-work, proof-of-integrity and bonded proof-of-stake. It’s hoped that the project can improve upon the original layer-2 solution for Bitcoin, the Lightning Network, which has had issues in terms of scalability and centralization risk.
