Gemini to Invest $24M as Part of India Expansion Plans

Web3 & Enterprise·September 28, 2023, 10:04 AM

US-headquartered crypto exchange platform Gemini is exploring further operational expansion abroad, turning its attention specifically right now to India.

The company first forayed into the world’s most populous country back in April with the announcement of the imminent launch of an engineering center.

Having tested the waters in the South Asian country, the crypto exchange has decided to broaden its presence in the nation, according to a blog post published to the firm’s website on Tuesday. With a capital influx of Rs. 200 crore ($24 million), the exchange will be growing its development center in Gurgaon, a city that serves as an integral part of India’s National Capital Region (NCR).

70-member Gurgaon team

Gemini has already onboarded over 70 staff members to its Gurgaon team. The company is actively hiring for more roles to fill its internal verticals, including tech development, finance, and compliance. In the next two years, the exchange plans to invest up to Rs. 200 crore ($24 million) in its Gurgaon facility, demonstrating a significant commitment where the Indian market is concerned.

In an official statement, the company stated:

“India has long been regarded as a hub for bar-raising talent by the world’s top technology companies, and we are thrilled to share that we are deepening our investment in the country. We are delighted to build on that announcement and reveal that we have opened our office within the Cyber Hub at Campus Cyber Greens.”

The business is looking to tap into India’s rich pool of engineering talent to bolster its ecosystem with fresh Web3 solutions, inclusive of resource allocation towards optimized platform security.

Singapore expansion

Pravjit Tiwana had previously been welcomed on board as the CEO of Gemini’s Asia-Pacific (APAC) operations earlier this year. He was previously the global chief technology officer (CTO) at the crypto exchange. Alongside this expansion, the company’s previous announcement in June to expand operations in Singapore is a task that also falls within Tiwana’s remit. At the time, the firm expressed the view that the APAC market will be crucial in securing the next phase of growth for the enterprise.

Gemini signaled back in June that it intended to expand its reach in the Middle East also by pursuing a trading license in the United Arab Emirates.

“India is undoubtedly a leading global hub for entrepreneurship and technological development. We are thrilled to build Gemini’s presence in India as we continue on our mission to unlock the next era of financial, creative, and personal freedom with crypto and Web3 innovation,” Gemini’s blog added, praising the ‘Startup India’ initiative.

Growing interest in Indian market

Previously, other crypto platforms like Coinbase and Algorand have also shown interest in onboarding software talent from India onto their teams. Amid the backdrop of India coming closer to possibly getting a concrete set of crypto rules around December this year, other crypto firms have also stepped into the market.

In June, Gibraltar-based crypto-friendly bank Xapo announced its entrance into the Indian market. The OKX crypto exchange based in Seychelles is also scheduling a full-fledged expansion into the country.

Kuwait Implements Full Ban on Crypto Activities

Kuwait Implements Full Ban on Crypto ActivitiesIn a significant move to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, Kuwait has taken a decisive step by announcing a complete ban on all crypto-related activities.Photo by Jan Dommerholt on Unsplash“No legal status”According to a circular issued by the Capital Markets Authority (CMA), Kuwait’s top financial regulator, earlier this week, cryptocurrencies are deemed to have “no legal status” and lack the support of any government or any asset. As a result, the prices of these digital assets are vulnerable to speculative swings, exposing investors to potential substantial losses. Consequently, the CMA asserts that engaging in crypto activities can lead to adverse consequences and financial risks for individuals and businesses alike. The ban extends beyond trading and mining. It also prohibits public companies from offering any cryptocurrency-related services. The CMA emphasized that it has never granted approval for crypto services in the past, and this outright ban reinforces the country’s commitment to curbing illicit financial activities facilitated by cryptocurrencies.Aligning with FATFThe decision comes in the wake of Kuwait’s determination to align with the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) global requirements for handling crypto assets. The country is attempting to demonstrate its compliance with international anti-money laundering guidelines by clamping down on digital assets.Kuwait’s approach towards cryptocurrencies diverges significantly from other Gulf states that have embraced the nascent industry with more openness. The likes of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain have previously engaged with crypto assets in various ways. For example, Bahrain granted approval to global crypto exchange platform Binance to provide digital asset services within the country. It’s keen to embrace digital assets as it pivots away from an oil-based economy. The Kingdom recently welcomed plans by Singapore-based private equity firm Whampoa Group to establish a crypto-friendly digital bank there.Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund has also invested in several US-based venture capital funds which are focused on crypto and blockchain technologies.Dubai, in particular, has been actively working on establishing a regulatory framework for digital assets, aiming to position itself as a digital hub in the region. The UAE as a whole has recognized crypto assets as securities for several years, fostering a favorable environment for crypto businesses.CriticismNews of the ban also provoked criticism, including commentary from Alex Gladstein, Chief Strategy Officer with the Human Rights Foundation. Gladstein, taking to Twitter, stated: “ Not surprising. I expect all authoritarian regimes (especially gulf tyrannies like the UAE and Saudi Arabia) to follow in Kuwait’s footsteps and eventually pass severe restrictions on citizen use of Bitcoin.” While the UAE trends in the opposite direction, Gladstein is not optimistic about the free use of decentralized cryptocurrencies in the UAE over the longer term.As the global crypto landscape continues to evolve, each country in the Gulf region is adopting unique approaches to address the opportunities and challenges posed by digital assets. While there may be opposition to the technology, decentralized digital assets will benefit from jurisdictional arbitrage in efforts to get this innovation rolled out for the benefit of ordinary people around the world.

Funding Round Sees HashKey Target Unicorn Valuation

Funding Round Sees HashKey Target Unicorn ValuationLeading financial technology company, Hong Kong-based HashKey Group, is looking to raise between $100 million and $200 million based on a $1 billion dollar company valuation that sees it take on unicorn status.According to an initial report by Bloomberg, early stage talks on the fund raise are progressing positively. It cites sources familiar with the matter in suggesting that as the fund raise negotiations progress, the terms of the offering, extent of the capital raise, and the valuation upon which its all based could change.Photo by Annie Spratt on UnsplashLeveraging a crypto-friendly environmentThe Web3 infrastructure developer and digital asset management firm has decided to take advantage of favorable conditions in Hong Kong in order to raise capital. The current business backdrop in the Chinese autonomous territory is particularly positive, and something that’s likely to make the capital raise a much easier task.Hong Kong has sought to create a crypto-friendly environment by way of both word and deed over the course of the past six months. With that being the case, it’s logical that there is tremendous opportunity for businesses like HashKey to achieve rapid growth in the nascent digital assets sector.Under the supervision of the Hong Kong regulator, Hashkey has already started to offer its services, one of only two companies (alongside OSL) to be permitted to trade in advance of the full implementation of licensing next month. While there have been some difficulties relative to banking the digital assets sector in Hong Kong, ZA Bank, Hong Kong’s largest virtual bank, has stepped up with the aspiration of banking the sector. ZA Bank is expected to facilitate crypto-fiat conversions with both of the currently licensed exchanges, HashKey and OSL, where customers can swap crypto into fiat currencies. The bank will also offer basic banking services to local web3 startups, a category that is currently underserved by traditional financial institutions.HashKey itself is cognizant of the conditions being right on the ground in Hong Kong and the opportunity that presents. Its chairman, Xiao Feng stated that Hong Kong is “very serious about building an international virtual asset center,” when speaking at the city’s Web3 Festival recently, an event that drew 13,000 attendees on its first day.Diversified service offeringThe firm’s activities in Hong Kong extend to HashKey Pro, a Hong Kong-compliant virtual asset exchange, and HashKey Capital, an investment firm. In April, the company established HashKey Wealth. This wealth management service offers investors access to a wide range of digital assets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies, together with alternative investments such as decentralized finance (DeFi) projects and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).The program is designed to meet the needs of both institutional and high net worth individual investors. The investment strategies offered vary, ranging from passive to actively managed portfolios. Different risk profiles are employed to suit investors’ preferences. The program also provides a range of other services, including custody, trading, and portfolio rebalancing, to ensure that investors can manage their investments with ease.
