Policy & Regulation·September 22, 2023, 1:43 AM

Linear Finance, the Hong Kong-based DeFi protocol, made an announcement by way of a blog post published to the project’s website on Thursday, suggesting that the project’s native stablecoin, LUSD, has come under attack.

Taking precautionary action

This security breach has prompted the team to take immediate action to safeguard user accounts and the project’s integrity. The project team is actively investigating the exploit attack on LUSD. It has issued a stern warning to its users, advising them against buying or trading LUSD until the team can confirm the situation’s status.

This measure is aimed at preventing further complications and ensuring the community’s interests remain protected. Furthermore, the project has temporarily suspended liquidations to secure users’ accounts. This step has been taken to mitigate immediate concerns and ensure that no user faces undue losses as a result of the exploit.

Assets disposed on PancakeSwap & Ascendex

Amid the ongoing investigation, Linear Finance’s team has pledged to provide timely updates as soon as more information becomes available. In explaining away the nature of the attack, the project team clarified:

”The attacker was able to mint an unlimited supply of LAAVE and subsequently traded the liquid asset to LUSD on the Linear Exchange, prior to selling it on PancakeSwap and Ascendex.”

Project response

In its efforts to deal with the issue, the Linear Finance project team has engaged an on-chain data specialist to track down the attackers. The Linear bridge contract has been disabled relative to LUSD. All protocol contracts that allow tokens to be minted, exchanged, or burnt have been paused. Meanwhile, wallets identified as having been involved in the protocol exploit have been shared with the authorities and major cryptocurrency exchanges.

Synthetic asset protocol

Linear Finance creates synthetic assets with the protocol design enabling unlimited liquidity. The network has been built on top of the Ethereum blockchain. As a consequence of activity surrounding the exploit, trading of LUSD over the course of the past 24 hours has proven to be out of the ordinary. At the time of writing volume over the past 24-hour period had increased by 8412%. The current market price of the stablecoin stands at $0.9874.

Protocol and network hacks and exploits have been coming in thick and fast in recent days. Hong Kong crypto exchange CoinEx has been trying to recover from a $70 million hack on the platform over recent days. Meanwhile, Seychelles-headquartered peer-to-peer crypto platform Remitano suffered a $2.7 million hack late last week.

On Wednesday, the project team behind DeFi protocol Balancer warned network users that the Balancer front-end user interface was under attack. The Ethereum-based DeFi network fell victim to another exploit last month, resulting in losses in the region of $900,000.

In the dynamic crypto sector, unforeseen events like potential exploits can disrupt the market and sow uncertainty. The issue remains a major challenge both for centralized exchange platforms and DeFi protocols.

Zodia Custody to Commence Yield Offering on Stablecoins

Zodia Custody to Commence Yield Offering on StablecoinsIn a play that’s designed to entice institutional investors, Zodia Custody, a portfolio company of Japanese financial services conglomerate SBI, is gearing up to offer a yield on digital assets.Photo by CoinWire Japan on UnsplashIntroducing “Zodia Custody Yield”The crypto startup has introduced “Zodia Custody Yield,” a crypto staking option designed to reward holders of crypto assets stored within its platform. The initiative has been launched in partnership with Singapore-based DeFi platform OpenEden. It promises returns on stablecoins although full details on the offering remain undisclosed.Jeremy Ng, Co-Founder of OpenEden, expressed his belief in the potential of cryptocurrencies to generate substantial passive income for their holders. Ng stated:“There are billions of dollars worth of stablecoins sitting on the sidelines when they could easily be generating yields for investors.”TradFi embracing digital assetsZodia’s move aligns with a growing trend in the financial industry. Yesterday, a leading US bank, Citi, disclosed its collaboration with Maersk to facilitate services that convert funds into digital assets. The primary goal is to enable the bank’s customers to execute nearly instantaneous payments, unrestricted by traditional business hours.Simultaneously, several prominent asset management firms are awaiting a pivotal decision from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regarding their applications to launch a spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF). This list includes major players such as BlackRock, Invesco, WisdomTree, ARK Invest, Valkyrie, and Franklin Templeton. BlackRock, the frontrunner in the efforts being expended towards ETF approval, submitted its application for a spot Bitcoin ETF on June 16.In a recent interview, Bloomberg analyst Eric Balchunas said that he expects $150 billion in capital to flow into the Bitcoin market within two years of a spot Bitcoin ETF approval in the US.The financial strategies of these entities now prominently feature blockchain and crypto-based products, once considered niche but now integral to their operations. Nonetheless, even with widespread anticipation of the approval of BlackRock’s ETF, the firm faces substantial obstacles. US regulators have subjected BlackRock to intense scrutiny due to concerns regarding its ties to China. Additionally, political figures have criticized the asset manager for prioritizing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria over investor returns.Zodia was spun out of British multinational banking firm Standard Chartered. The bank has a positive outlook relative to crypto. In a bold prediction made in June, the UK-based bank forecasted that the value of Bitcoin could potentially surge to $50,000 by the end of the year, with an even more optimistic projection of $120,000 for 2024.In 2021 Standard Chartered, in collaboration with Northern Trust, a leading asset servicing firm, founded Zodia Custody. Since its inception, the venture has garnered a respectable level of success. It successfully secured $36 million in investments and solidified a partnership with SBI Digital Asset Holdings, enabling its expansion into the Japanese market. In May, the firm launched its crypto custodian service in Dubai, having signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Dubai International Financial Center (DIFC). In June, Zodia partnered with blockchain infrastructure provider Blockdaemon, in an effort to further its crypto staking offering. Earlier this month, the company announced its arrival in Singapore, with a view towards expanding its digital asset custody service there.

Earlier this year, Triv added the Triv Shield, a security tool that prevents platform users from inadvertently interacting with malicious contracts. The company operates under the oversight of Indonesian regulators, the Financial Services Authority (OJK) and the Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency, better known as BAPPEBTI. Gabriel Rey, Founder and CEO of Triv, said that the partnership will enable the platform to expand its coin offerings, “enhance liquidity and introduce more innovative products for both new and existing users.” He believes that the partnership will also be helpful in maintaining CryptoWave Media, an educational platform that forms part of Triv Group, as a leading crypto media outlet in Indonesia.  Earlier this year, MEXC Ventures launched a $300 million Ecosystem Development Fund geared towards accelerating innovation and ecosystem growth within the blockchain sector. At the time, MEXC Chief Operating Officer (COO) Tracy Jin said that the company’s overall vision was to transition from a trading venue to an ecosystem platform, facilitating the needs of crypto industry firms. The company previously made a $16 million strategic investment into Ethena, a stablecoin project built on Ethereum that offers the USDe decentralized stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar. Anson emphasized that this marks a significant step in their joint exploration of the stablecoin’s potential use cases within the Micronesian island nation.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashReducing payment costsPalau’s Ministry of Finance initiated the Stablecoin project to address specific needs within the nation’s financial landscape. By sponsoring this project, the ministry aims to reduce payment costs within the Republic of Palau and enhance access to financial services, especially for underserved communities and various socio-economic groups, utilizing digital solutions.Notably, the Palau Stablecoin operates on the XRP Ledger (XRPL), demonstrating Ripple’s technology as the backbone of this financial initiative.Anson’s tweets also shed light on the meticulous approach taken in developing the Palau Stablecoin. Controlled and limited PSC pilot tests have been conducted to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of the solution co-designed with Ripple. These pilot experiments provide valuable insights into the stability and usability of the Palau Stablecoin before its potential public release.Extensive testingAlready, the Palau Stablecoin pilot program has seen volunteer users actively participating in the testing phase. Videos shared by Anson on Twitter showcased smooth transactions at partner vendors in Palau, promptly confirming the transaction receipts. The successful implementation of the Palau Stablecoin pilot program has drawn attention from the XRP community, and anticipation is building for the official joint press release scheduled for July 27, Thursday morning in Ngerulmud, Palau, as Anson revealed. The collaboration between Ripple and the Republic of Palau was initiated at the end of 2021, with launch originally scheduled to take place in 2022. Ripple has claimed to be in dialogue with in excess of twenty governments relative to enabling central bank digital currency (CBDC) issuance.Given that the island state lacks a functioning central bank and the US dollar is recognized as the primary medium of exchange throughout the country, the creation of a USD-backed stablecoin is a significant achievement resulting from the national stablecoin initiative. The president described this as a “step towards our own central bank digital currency.”There has been plenty of activity in Micronesian nations relative to cryptocurrency in recent times. Tonga is understood to be considering introducing bitcoin as legal tender. The Marshall Islands is considering issuing a CBDC although it is being discouraged by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in that endeavor. Meanwhile, the government of Vanuatu announced its support for the Satoshi Island project. With a strategic focus on addressing financial needs and enhancing accessibility within Palau, this partnership sets the stage for a new era of digital financial solutions for the Micronesian nation.
