AliExpress Partners With ‘The Moment3!’ NFT Project

AliExpress Partners With ‘The Moment3!’ NFT ProjectAliExpress, the renowned global e-commerce platform and subsidiary of China’s Alibaba Group, is making its entry into the world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) through a newly announced partnership with The Moment3!, a Web3 project. The collaboration aims to release a collection of 5,555 NFTs later this month.Photo by Andrey Metelev on UnsplashWhat is ‘The Moment3!’?Oddly, we know very little about the project. Its Telegram channel has just been established, it doesn’t have a website, while its Discord and Twitter channels are also recently established with modest followings. Anonymity is a feature in Web3 and perhaps that’s the approach this project is taking. Whatever the background, it has to be said that there must be some talent behind the project for it to secure the backing of an entity like AliExpress by way of this partnership. This recent announcement was initially made on AliExpress’ official Twitter account but that tweet has since been removed. The project itself tweeted out news of the partnership on Thursday. The Moment3!’s mission, as stated in its Twitter bio, revolves around utilizing NFTs to immortalize special moments on the blockchain.According to the project’s Discord channel, The Moment3! aims to connect with real-world businesses and provide NFT owners with benefits and exclusive rights beyond the collectible value.NFT debutThis marks AliExpress’ initial venture into the NFT market, although its parent company, Alibaba, has previously explored the Web3 space. In September 2022, Alibaba’s luxury shopping platform, Tmall Luxury Pavilion, introduced an immersive shopping metaverse experience and introduced the Meta Pass, granting users free access to virtual experiences.Alibaba-Centric Web3 projectsThere have been several other Web3-related investments and developments related to Alibaba Group companies in recent months.Last month, Alibaba Cloud, one of the world’s largest cloud computing companies, joined forces with the Avalanche layer one blockchain project to introduce “Cloudverse,” a launchpad facilitating the creation of personalized spaces within the metaverse for businesses. In April Alibaba Cloud was the co-organizer of the Web3 Festival, an event held in Hong Kong to showcase the autonomous Chinese territory for the development of the Web3 sector. The four-day event attracted 10,000 attendees. In early May, Artifact Labs, a Hong Kong-based start-up company that specializes in metaverse and Web3 product offerings, raised $3.25 million in a funding round led by Blue Pool Capital. The investment firm is the personal investment vehicle of Alibaba founders Jack Ma and Joe Tsai.NFT warningAliExpress, owned by Alibaba Group, is a global e-commerce platform that does not cater to customers in mainland China, despite being headquartered in China. The Chinese government prohibited all cryptocurrency transactions in September 2021. NFTs remained legal although authorities recently issued a warning on their use, together with some guidelines. With its new collaboration, AliExpress is expanding its reach into the Web3 space and exploring the potential of NFTs. As the release date approaches, anticipation grows to witness the specific features and benefits offered by the 5,555 NFTs that will soon be available to the public.

Yat Siu: Hong Kong’s Crypto Adoption Sanctioned by the Mainland

Yat Siu: Hong Kong’s Crypto Adoption Sanctioned by the MainlandIn a keynote speech at the Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC) in Paris on Wednesday, Yat Siu, Co-Founder of blockchain gaming and NFT firm Animoca Brands, shed light on Hong Kong’s rapid adoption of cryptocurrencies and Web3 technology, emphasizing its connection to developments unfolding in mainland China.Photo by Serey Kim on UnsplashDriven by the Chinese authoritiesSiu argued that the current crypto trend in Hong Kong signifies more than just the actions of the Chinese autonomous area itself, pointing to a larger agenda driven by China’s aspirations.According to Siu, the Chinese government’s release of its Web3 white paper in May, which positioned Web3 as the future of the internet, carries significant weight. Notably, this announcement came only days after Hong Kong revealed plans to allow retail crypto investments. Siu highlighted that even though China’s white paper did not explicitly mention cryptocurrencies, it is key to acknowledging the country’s commitment to advancing Web3 technologies. The news of Hong Kong’s crypto developments resonated throughout China, capturing attention even on China Central Television, the national TV channel. Siu underscored the broader implications of this coverage, suggesting that the developments in Hong Kong bear the imprint of higher authorities. He made it clear that any actions taken by Hong Kong would require the approval of China.Challenging US global hegemonyBeyond Hong Kong, Siu delved into the broader significance of Web3 as a tool to challenge the United States’ technological hegemony. He expressed concerns about the security risks associated with excessive reliance on tech giants such as Google, Apple, and Facebook. Siu argued that countries like Japan, Korea, and China view Web3 as an opportunity to break free from the dominance of US-centric technologies. This motivation is especially pronounced in China, which is actively pursuing de-dollarization.Reducing dependence on the US dollar represents a key factor driving the adoption of Web3 in these countries. Siu pointed out that the global currency’s position affords the United States significant power and influence, making it crucial for China and other nations to seek alternatives. Embracing Web3 technologies serves as a potential avenue for diminishing reliance on the US dollar and challenging the current financial status quo. While mainland China banned nearly all crypto activities in 2021, the country has remained one of the largest crypto-mining hubs worldwide, despite the prohibition. The proactive stance of Hong Kong in implementing crypto-friendly regulations has sparked hope that it could pave the way for China to eventually lift its long-standing ban. However, prominent figures within the Chinese establishment, such as CPIC Investment Management CEO Chenggang Zhou, have recently reiterated the country’s anti-crypto stance. The rapid adoption of cryptocurrencies and Web3 technology in Hong Kong provides a glimpse into broader developments unfolding in mainland China. Web3 is seen as a potent instrument for challenging US technological dominance, although whether that leads to China lifting its crypto ban is something that remains to be seen.

OKX Entering Indian Market With a Focus on Web3

OKX Entering Indian Market With a Focus on Web3Cryptocurrency exchange OKX is gearing up to make its presence felt in the Indian market.Local recruitmentThat’s according to a discussion between a company executive and CoinDesk, as explained by the publication in a report published on Friday. The firm plans on recruiting local employees in its endeavor to conquer the market within the world’s most populous nation.OKX intends to rely on local employees who will spearhead its initiatives in the country. Haider Rafique, Chief Marketing Officer at OKX explained:“We’re trying to identify who’s who in the zoo and what is their contribution. There’s a large developer community. How do we help them? Build a relationship with them.”He believes that adopting a community-centric approach will pave the way for a successful entry into the local market. Rafique emphasized:“We’re going to learn about the community. We’re going to work with local folks — figure out where we can add value.”Photo by Naveed Ahmed on UnsplashFocusing on Web3 applicationsThe company also intends to take on the challenge by placing emphasis on the use of Web3 applications. Rafique revealed the company’s ambitious plans to scale up its wallet services “exponentially” by engaging with India’s developer community. Currently, there are approximately 200,000 OKX Wallet users in India, accounting for just 5% of the country’s Web3 user base.In a recent collaboration, OKX partnered with the blockchain platform Neo for an APAC Hackathon held in Bengaluru, a city in southern India. Rafique described this move as a strategic test to validate assumptions, understand the local culture, and support the burgeoning Web3 ecosystem. The global exchange already has a physical presence in world centers such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai, and the Bahamas.Indian crypto environmentTrading cryptocurrencies is currently legal in India, albeit with no established regulatory framework by a central authority. Ironically India has been very active in working towards the establishment of global regulatory standards relative to crypto while coming in for criticism from its Supreme Court recently for the government’s failure to provide regulatory clarity at home.Cryptocurrencies are used and traded at the investor’s risk in India and do not hold legal tender status for banking purposes. Additionally, a 30% tax is imposed on cryptocurrency transactions in the country.Rafique believes that Indian regulators are gradually distinguishing Web3 from centralized finance (CeFi). He remarked: “They’re more concerned about venues that have fiat on-ramps, which we do but don’t offer it in India.” He expressed a readiness for the company to become a front-runner once India establishes a regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies. It’s interesting to note that while OKX embarks on expanding its footprint within the Indian market, Indian crypto market incumbents have been looking to downsize. Indian cryptocurrency exchanges like CoinSwitch and CoinDCX have faced layoffs amid the current market downturn.Notwithstanding current market conditions, it’s likely that OKX is taking a long-term view and positioning itself for future success in what should be a very important crypto asset marketplace in the future.Ryan Selkis, CEO and Founder of crypto market intelligence firm Messari expressed this view, stating: “I love to see companies like OKX expanding in India. The largest democracy in the world should be a haven for crypto innovation in the years to come.”
