LG CNS Chooses Six Startups to Foster Innovation in Digital Transformation

LG CNS, the information technology (IT) arm of South Korean conglomerate LG Group, said Tuesday that it has chosen six startups to nurture under its sixth annual Startup Monster program — a program dedicated to supporting technology startups that are capable of pioneering consumer values in the realm of digital transformation (DX). By directly contributing to their growth as startups, LG CNS also aims to secure them as future business partners.

Among those startups is Zkrypto, a company specializing in zero-knowledge proof technology — a method of providing the validity of a statement without revealing the statement itself. Zkrypto will work with LG CNS on security solutions and privacy protection services necessary for operating digital finance services such as digital wallets and security tokens. The two companies already established their relationship earlier last month when they signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly develop blockchain-powered business models.

 

Investing in startup growth

Under the program, the companies will undergo a six-month technology assessment as well as receive KRW 100 million (approximately $75,000) in funding to demonstrate the feasibility of technology integration into their businesses. LG CNS said that it would carry out the assessment by leveraging its extensive business references and technical resources along with assistance from other IT experts.

“Through the Startup Monster program, we will continue to discover and nurture promising startups with innovative technologies and create an ecosystem where we can grow together,” said Jeon Eun-kyung, Executive Director of LG CNS’ Convergence Technology Research Institute.

 

Participants from diverse industries

This year’s recruitment attracted over 240 applicants, resulting in a highly competitive selection ratio of 40:1. Other selected startups besides Zkrypto include GradeHealthChain, Quantum Universe, Delivery Lab, mAy-I, and Circle Platform, which specialize in emerging DX technologies, such as big data analysis, artificial intelligence (AI) modeling, and extended reality (XR).

GradeHealthChain is known for its health management app LOG, which analyzes health checkup results and medical information to allocate an overall health score. Users can provide these scores and other medical information to insurance companies partnered with GradeHealthChain to receive premium discounts on insurance. In turn, the insurance companies can use this data to accurately assess the customer’s health status and recommend optimal insurance products. LG CNS plans to work with GradeHealthChain to create services for insurance product recommendations.

On the other hand, Quantum Universe specializes in the planning, production, and distribution of XR content. With LG CNS, the company will jointly develop digital twin technology that replicates physical objects in a digital environment for applications in smart factories and manufacturing. They are also pursuing marketing projects using metaverse technology.

mAy-I and Circle Platform were chosen for the program for their impressive technical capabilities in data collection and AI modeling. Meanwhile, Delivery Lab operates a food distribution platform in the smart logistics field.

LG CNS has been actively nurturing startups and working with them through the Startup Monster program since 2018. Up until last year, a total of 22 startups participated in the program.

SelectStar, one of last year’s participants, is currently collaborating with LG CNS as a data construction partner for AI businesses. The two companies have notably created KorQuAD 2.0, a Korean language machine reading comprehension dataset.

In addition, Lovo, an AI text-to-speech solutions startup from the third Startup Monster program, worked with LG CNS on developing an AI contact center. According to industry sources, Lovo’s corporate value has increased more than 20 times from the time it participated in the program, reaching KRW 100 billion.

Sun acknowledged the HTX hack in a tweet, announcing the temporary suspension of deposits and withdrawals without specifying the exact amount pilfered.Separate Heco Chain hackIt is understood that approximately $30 million worth of cryptocurrencies was siphoned from the exchange wallet. The platform is actively investigating the breach, aiming to uncover the specifics surrounding the attack. Simultaneously, the HECO Bridge, which was established by HTX for cost-effective fund transfers across different blockchains, experienced a separate hack.This breach resulted in losses exceeding $85 million, including ETH, US dollar stablecoin Tether (USDT) and various other tokens. Although initially launched by HTX, HECO operates independently from the HTX exchange.Crypto community concernThese security breaches cast a shadow over Sun’s crypto ventures, especially considering the recent hack on Poloniex, which saw losses surpassing $100 million in various cryptocurrencies. A spokesperson for crypto security firm Hacken told Cointelegraph that these hacks could be the work of an insider.“We can see that all these attacks have the same target: Justin Sun’s projects,” the spokesperson stated. These related incidents are the cause of significant speculation within the crypto space, with some concern expressed about the financial health of HTX, given that the firm is currently offering unsustainable interest rates of up to 100% APY on a selection of digital assets.In response to the HTX hack, Justin Sun assured the community in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that HTX would fully compensate for the losses incurred in its hot wallet. The exchange has temporarily halted deposits and withdrawals as the investigation unfolds. Sun emphasized the commitment to resume services once the investigation concludes and the cause of the breach is identified.These incidents raise questions about the security infrastructure of platforms associated with Justin Sun. The crypto community awaits further details on the investigation’s outcomes and preventive measures that will be implemented to fortify these exchanges against future attacks.Such recent security breaches have not just affected Justin Sun-related enterprises. Earlier this month, decentralized exchange (DEX) KyberSwap was exploited to the tune of $46.5 million. Earlier this week, Kronos Research — a Taipei-based crypto trading, market making and venture capital platform — experienced a $25.6 million loss. The past twenty days have seen five major hacks resulting in an aggregate loss of a staggering $290 million.As the crypto industry grapples with increasing security challenges, the importance of robust protective measures cannot be overstated. These developments underscore the need for a cautious and diligent approach in safeguarding digital assets within the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency landscape.

Cango ramps up crypto production

Cango, Inc., a Shanghai-headquartered Bitcoin mining business which is publicly listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: CANG), provided a mining operations update on Aug. 5, disclosing a significant increase in its crypto production.Photo by Dmytro Demidko on Unsplash45% increase in outputThe update outlined that in June, the firm mined 450 BTC, while holding 3,879.2 BTC, with a deployed hashrate of 32 EH/s. The figures for July show a considerable uptick, with 650.5 BTC having been mined. That Bitcoin was retained, bringing the firm’s overall Bitcoin treasury holding to 4,529.7 BTC, with a deployed hashrate of 50 EH/s. Cango CEO Paul Yu outlined that the firm had added 18 EH/s in hashpower towards the end of June. This additional capacity accounted for the increased output experienced for the month of July, representing a 45% increase month-on-month. Yu stated: “This strong performance not only demonstrates our commitment to execution but also fuels our ambition to accelerate future production.” The Cango CEO added that a new and experienced management team is now in place, and with that, Cango is focusing on working towards transitioning to “a more diversified and resilient portfolio of mining sites and energy infrastructure." Cango isn’t the only company in the Bitcoin mining sector to up its production. Cipher Mining, an American miner with facilities in Texas, also published an update, indicating that it produced 214 BTC in July with a hashrate of around 20.4 EH/s, up 21.43% month-on-month. Cipher outlined that Black Pearl Phase I, the initial 150 MW tranche of its Black Pearl facility, came on stream last month, accounting for the increased output. Unlike Cango, Cipher sold 52 BTC as part of what it described as “its regular treasury management process.” In this respect, Cango bucked a trend in comparison with its industry peers. CryptoQuant reported that miners became significant sellers of Bitcoin in July, depositing 16,000 BTC to exchanges as of July 18.Ranked by BitcoinTreasuries.net in order of Bitcoin held, Cango now holds 18th place among corporations holding BTC.Originally an automotive transaction service platform operating within the Chinese market, Cango announced a new departure last November, with the signing of agreements to buy $400 million in crypto mining equipment from a number of vendors, including Bitmain. With crypto mining a banned activity in China, the company has deployed its mining operations at various locations across North America, South America, the Middle East and East Africa. By January, the company was being referred to as a “Bitcoin mining powerhouse.” At that time, the company’s Communications Director, Juliet Ye, told CoinDesk that the firm’s entry into the Bitcoin mining sector had surprised people, given that “nobody has ever heard of Cango before.” By April, Cango had sold its legacy auto-financing business for $352 million to a firm linked to Bitmain affiliate, Antalpha, allowing it to focus exclusively on mining. The company’s stock has surged 180% over the course of the last 12 months. Ye said that the Chinese firm’s pivot to Bitcoin mining has created a buzz around the company that had been absent previously.

Until now, NFTs have been widely utilized in fields like art, music and entertainment due to their ability to prove individual ownership of digital assets. Starbucks’ adoption of the technology is a significant step in its implementation into daily life, which will lead to an increase in the number of real-world use cases and an acceleration in the transition to the era of Web3.To celebrate the launch of the NFT wallet, Starbucks plans to hold a promotional event where customers who use a reusable cup for one beverage ordered via the Siren Order function will receive one Eco Stamp. Up to three stamps can be collected per day. These can be exchanged for various types of NFTs, which are categorized as Basic, Creative and Artist, and each customer can only own one.Starbucks’ NFTs will be minted in collaboration with Seoul-based art platform and gallery Print Bakery (PBG) and PBG exclusive artist DADAZ, featuring images of unique cups, tumblers and more.The franchise plans to hold an offline exhibition to showcase images of the NFTs as well as its achievements in corporate sustainability at the Starbucks Jongno R store located in Jongno-gu, central Seoul, early next month.Sustainable sipsThe coffee franchise is also known for offering a complimentary beverage voucher to customers who purchase a reusable cup or tumbler. Next month, this voucher will be renamed the Eco Tumbler Beverage Coupon, which customers can exchange for a tall-sized beverage of their choice. This policy is aimed at encouraging the use of personal cups and providing tailored benefits to customers who embrace sustainable options.This new introduction was partially driven by the steady increase in the number of personal cups used at Starbucks stores around the country over the past three years. The annual number of cases has risen from 17.39 million in 2020 to 21.9 million in 2021, then 25.3 million last year.This figure has spiked significantly this year in particular, with the cumulative yearly number reaching 26.7 million last month, surpassing last year’s total. If this trend continues until the end of the year, the estimated figure is expected to be around 29.6 million, representing a 17% increase compared to 2022.This upward trend is attributed to the immediate KRW 400 discount offered to customers who participate, as well as an alternative benefit where customers can earn one “Star”, or reward point, for each purchase that they make. Until last month, the total value of benefits that were distributed via these two systems — with one Star valued at KRW 500 — exceeded KRW 12 billion. The ratio of immediate discount and Star rewards in this value stands at 30% and 70%, respectively.Green commitmentStarbucks also plans to continue its No Single-Use Cup Day campaign, a collaboration with the Korea Zero Waste Movement Network that has been ongoing for the past five years. The brand dedicates the tenth of every month as a day without single-use disposable cups, giving out merchandise like mugs, tumblers, coffee ground planting kits and stickers. Since last year, various events have been organized to celebrate the day, such as coupons gifted to customers who use reusable cups the most. Approximately one million people have participated in these promotions since the campaign’s inception in 2018.Starbucks expressed its hopes that these initiatives would act as a catalyst for positive changes in local communities by encouraging the reduction of waste.
