India’s CoinSwitch Trims Workforce Amid Market Downturn

Web3 & Enterprise·August 30, 2023, 12:16 AM

In the wake of an extended cryptocurrency market downturn, India’s CoinSwitch, a crypto investing app, has become the latest platform to downsize its staff, as reported by local news agency Moneycontrol on Monday.

Customer support cuts

The exchange has reportedly let 44 employees go from its customer support division this month, attributing the move to redundant roles caused by the bear market’s decline in customer queries.

In a statement, CoinSwitch explained: “We continuously evaluate our business to stay competitive, prioritizing innovation, value, and service for our customers. To that end, we right-sized our customer support team to align with the present volume of customer queries on our platform.”

The company noted that this decision led to the voluntary resignation of 44 members from its support team, following detailed discussions with their managers. The 44 employees represent a significant portion — approximately 8% — of CoinSwitch’s total workforce. The company’s LinkedIn profile currently indicates that it has 519 employees.

Following local industry trend

CoinSwitch’s staff reduction news emerged barely a week after another prominent local exchange, CoinDCX, downsized its workforce by 12%, based on an overall headcount of around 730 employees (according to LinkedIn data).

The fact that both businesses have taken the decision to cut staffing is indicative of an overall market downtrend currently. That said, CoinSwitch had onboarded 60 people since April, which would imply that the firm is expanding in other areas despite these customer service-related layoffs.

This may reflect the company’s plan to change strategic direction. Going forward, CoinSwitch intends to diversify its product offering and transition towards becoming a wealth tech platform.

CoinDCX layoffs

CoinDCX’s Co-Founders, Sumit Gupta and Neeraj Khandelwal, stated last week that they were making what was a very difficult decision to reduce the size of the team by 12% and that they regretted that talented team members would be moving on from the organization. The founders attributed the decision to market challenges and also pointed out the impact of the 1% Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) applied to local crypto exchanges. They clarified:

“These factors had a significant impact on our volumes and thus revenues. To adapt, we undertook several proactive measures, including direct cost optimization and investment in automation to drive efficiency and productivity.”

According to the announcement, the affected CoinDCX employees will receive a support package including severance pay equivalent to their full notice period, an additional month of salary, extension of health insurance, and other forms of assistance.

CoinSwitch was founded by Ashish Singhal, Govind Soni, and Vimal Sagar Tiwari in 2017. The company received the backing of leading venture capital firms such as Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Sequoia Capital, Tiger Global, Paradigm, Coinbase Ventures, and Ribbit Capital. In 2021 it was recognized as India’s second crypto firm to reach unicorn status, following a $260 million Series C funding round that saw the company reach a valuation of $1.9 billion.

In 2022 India introduced a 30% tax on cryptocurrency gains, resulting in the exodus of numerous cryptocurrency service providers and a steep decline in crypto trading activity. The country has also implemented a 1% TDS for crypto exchanges, mandating that exchanges pay 1% on all crypto asset transfers.

Bybit suspends services in India amid regulatory blowback

It’s been a tough couple of months for global crypto exchange, Bybit. Having had to leave the Malaysian market due to regulatory issues, the firm is now being forced to shutter its service in India for similar reasons.Photo by Naveed Ahmed on UnsplashWithdrawing services on January 12The exchange announced its withdrawal from the Indian market via a statement published to its website on Jan. 10. The service for Indian residents has been ceased from 08:00 UTC on Sunday, Jan. 12.  Account opening and crypto trading has been disabled. Furthermore, the ability to place market orders through other exchange products offered by the company has also been disabled. The ability for customers to withdraw fiat currency and digital assets remains in place. Achieving full complianceWhile the company is leaving the market, it has stated that its services are temporarily suspended in India. It cited a need to “operate in full compliance” as the firm’s primary objective relative to the Indian market. Elaborating on this, it stated:”We have taken this measure while we continue to work closely with the regulator to finalize our registration as a Virtual Digital Asset Service Provider in India, which we expect to secure in the coming weeks.” Malaysian market issueThe situation mirrors a similar set of circumstances that Bybit finds itself in relative to the Malaysian market. On Dec. 27, the Malaysian Securities Commission published a statement outlining details of an enforcement action it had taken against Bybit and the firm’s CEO, Ben Zhou.  In that instance, Bybit was directed to disable its service offering within the Malaysian market. The company indicated that it would return to the market once it had secured the necessary licensing. India hasn’t proven to be the most crypto-friendly jurisdiction to date. Indian crypto influencer R.K. Gupta took to the X social media platform, claiming that the government was at fault for Bybit having to withdraw from the Indian market. He stated: “Our country’s flawed policies are ruining crypto, while others aim for reserve currency status. Govt targeting exchanges, and now Bybit might stop services in India.” In December 2023, India’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) took action to prevent unregistered overseas exchanges from operating within the Indian market. It issued compliance show-cause notices to nine exchanges at the time. Shortly afterwards, Apple India blocked access to these exchanges on the Indian Apple App Store.  While Bybit wasn’t amongst them, it is now being brought into line by Indian regulators. Back in September, it emerged that the FIU was considering requests to allow four offshore cryptocurrency exchanges to resume activity within the Indian market. Having been deemed to have come into compliance, Binance and KuCoin resumed activities in India in August 2024. Aside from Malaysia and India, Bybit has also encountered regulatory difficulties in Europe. Last August, it left the French market due to regulatory problems. In May 2022, the Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF), the French financial markets authority, blacklisted Bybit, warning investors that it wasn’t a registered digital asset service provider.  As part of that market withdrawal, Bybit collaborated with partner Coinhouse, a regulated French crypto-asset platform. Accounts holding assets above the value of 10 USDC were transferred to Coinhouse.

LG Goes Further Down the Web3 Rabbit Hole with NFT Patent

LG Goes Further Down the Web3 Rabbit Hole with NFT PatentSouth Korean consumer electronics behemoth LG has delved deeper into the Web3 world, this time with a patent filing that would make NFTs more available to TV viewers.Enabling NFTs for the mass marketAccording to the filing, which was made with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the electronics giant is seeking to acquire intellectual property protection on a capability to have a smart TV connect with an NFT market server. That ability would allow the user to then send, receive and display digital artwork. Furthermore, the consumer could complete purchases using an associated digital wallet, relative to NFT-based artwork that they would have the ability to browse through on their LG smart TV.While crypto and Web3 continue to garner a lot of attention, it can still seem sometimes that it exists in a bubble all of its own. Moves like this one from an organization as professional as LG are encouraging, as they demonstrate that LG believes that NFTs are going to be a part of the future, and most importantly, that they’re going to enable mass market participation and adoption.Blade WalletThis is not LG’s first venture into the world of NFTs. Last year, the corporation launched its very own NFT marketplace. Known as “LG Art Labs”, it enables users of US LG TVs that run the WebOS 5.0 operating system, to trade digital collectibles.Earlier this year, the firm launched the Blade Wallet, a third party audited, self-custody digital wallet which runs on the Hedera public ledger. That development has come out of a partnership that LG has developed with the Hedera Hashgraph platform much earlier in 2020. Just as with the Blade Wallet, the LG Art Labs NFT marketplace also runs on Hedera. To support these early stage products, LG itself has been a node operator on the Hedera network since 2020.This recent patent filing references an NFT marketplace and a digital wallet. As we’ve established, the corporation has already launched both of them already. All of that points to the electronics giant executing on a well thought through plan which will bring NFTs to the mass market.Broader interestLG isn’t going to have it all to itself. Samsung, yet another South Korean consumer electronics giant, has also dipped its toe in the water where NFTs are concerned. In January 2022, the company released an NFT marketplace on three of its TV models. That initiative was enabled due to its partnership with leading curated NFT marketplace, Nifty Gateway.Neither will the South Koreans have the consumer electronics-enabled NFT market all to themselves. Japanese consumer electronics conglomerate Sony filed a patent in March that will allow players of Sony products to access interactive Web3 gameplay. That application will be centered upon the use of NFTs also.Sony’s attempts to delve into the Web3 arena have been more recent. In February of this year, Sony Network Communications, its internet provider division, partnered with the project team behind the Astar blockchain in order to create an incubation program for companies who are working on NFT-based innovation and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs).Photo by Shubham Dhage on Unsplash
