Bitfinex Turkiye Facilitates Zero-Cost Deposits via VakıfBank Partnership

Web3 & Enterprise·August 25, 2023, 2:06 AM

In a strategic move to bolster its presence in Turkey, cryptocurrency trading platform Bitfinex has introduced a seamless and cost-free method for Turkish customers to deposit Turkish lira directly into their accounts.

According to a press release published by the company on Thursday, this integration comes as a result of collaboration between Bitfinex Turkiye and VakıfBank, Turkey’s second largest bank in terms of asset size, and a significant player in the Turkish banking sector.

Expanding market access

Bitfinex’s Chief Technology Officer, Paolo Ardoino, emphasized the user-centric benefits of this partnership. He stated that Turkish customers can now deposit lira effortlessly and economically, streamlining their access to the cryptocurrency market.

This development could potentially aid Bitfinex in expanding its operations within Turkey, which stands as one of the largest markets for leading global crypto exchange Binance. Ardoino stated that the move facilitates “the ability to deposit [lira] seamlessly and cost-effectively.” Additionally, Ardoino maintained that market access was being enabled “by integrating with VakıfBank,” and that “[Bitfinex] is making it easier” for customers to participate.

Collaborating with the crypto sector

Founded in the 1950s, VakıfBank has 935 brick-and-mortar branches, a network of over 4,000 ATMs and almost one million point-of-sale (POS) terminals in use. This latest partnership is not the first touch point for the bank when it comes to the crypto sector. It has a similar deal in place with Istanbul-based crypto platform, CoinTR. In that instance, CoinTR customers can deposit or withdraw Turkish lira to or from their CoinTR accounts via VakifBank instantly, 24/7 and with zero fees.

The bank has also participated in a blockchain-based trade finance initiative, the Turkish Trade Chain Project. In a press release published by the bank last year, it expressed the belief “that blockchain technology will make data sharing more transparent, traceable, verifiable and controllable by reducing the communication traffic between parties in the foreign trade process that requires many documents.”

Partnering with TradFi

By aligning its services with a traditional financial institution, Bitfinex joins the ranks of other industry players like Fidelity, BlackRock, and PayPal, which have demonstrated increasing openness to cryptocurrencies despite the ongoing bear market.

Turkey has proven to be an important market for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and USDT, the US dollar stablecoin issued by Bitfinex’s sister company, Tether. Runaway inflation in recent years has led to an outsized interest in decentralized money in the country.

Bitfinex’s business in Turkey has not been without its hiccups. Earlier this year, a Wall Street Journal report alleged that Bitfinex Turkiye user accounts had been implicated in terrorist financing. One particular account was alleged to have been used for money laundering purposes by the armed wing of Palestinian militant group, Hamas.

This latest initiative follows Bitfinex’s recent announcement of the launch of Bitfinex P2P, a peer-to-peer exchange catering to clients in Argentina, Venezuela, and Colombia. With such expansions and collaborations, the cryptocurrency sector continues to evolve, demonstrating resilience and adaptability in the face of bear market conditions and regulatory challenges.

Metaplanet aims for 10K Bitcoin stockpile

Metaplanet, a Japanese Bitcoin treasury company listed on the Tokyo stock exchange, is targeting a holding of 10,000 BTC in 2025.2025 targetTaking to the X social media platform on Jan. 5, the company’s CEO, Simon Gerovich, set out a number of objectives which the company will strive to reach in 2025. Among them is the objective to expand the company’s Bitcoin holdings to 10,000 BTC. Gerovich said that the expansion of the firm’s Bitcoin holding would be achieved “by utilizing the most accretive capital market tools available to us.” He followed up on Jan. 6 with an announcement that Metaplanet has completed its 12th series stock acquisition rights. Gerovich claimed that the successful completion of the stock issuance marked “a milestone in Metaplanet’s financing and Bitcoin acquisition strategy.” The 12th series stock issuance was first announced back in November, with a six-month exercise period opening on Dec. 17. Additionally, the company issued 4.5 billion yen ($28,562,451) and 5 billion yen ($31,736,057) in ordinary bonds, with a maturity date of June 2025. Other objectives the company has set out for 2025 include enhancing transparency and shareholder engagement through new initiatives. Furthermore, Metaplanet intends to leverage its partnerships to advance Bitcoin adoption in Japan and further afield. Gerovich said that Metaplanet will explore innovative opportunities to grow the firm’s impact in Japan and within the Bitcoin ecosystem.Photo by Vasilis Chatzopoulos on Unsplash2024 ‘transformational’The Metaplanet CEO claimed that 2024 had been “transformational” for the company. He added: “We broke records, expanded our Bitcoin treasury, and reinforced our position as Asia’s leading Bitcoin Treasury Company.” Shifting its attention to 2025, the firm is focused on its efforts to drive greater value for shareholders. Metaplanet’s fortunes are now heavily dependent upon the performance of Bitcoin. In an interview at a New Year’s Eve party held in Miami by Microstrategy founder Michael Saylor, Gerovich commented on Bitcoin adoption, stating:"I’m slowly but surely seeing Bitcoin becoming a topic of discussion at the highest levels of government. Corporations around the world are beginning to adopt it as a Bitcoin standard." The Metaplanet CEO is optimistic that the U.S. will adopt a strategic Bitcoin reserve once the Trump administration commences. Should that happen, he believes that other countries will follow. He sees Japan as one of those countries where they do look to the U.S. as a guide on such matters. “So I think if President Trump does adopt it as a strategic reserve, then Japan and many countries in Asia will do the same,” he stated. Metaplanet is understood to be pursuing a business model very similar to the one pioneered by Microstrategy in the United States. The company increased the rate at which it acquired Bitcoin in H2 2024. Metaplanet made its first Bitcoin purchase in April 2024. At that time, its stock was trading at $1.90. Just as the Bitcoin unit price surged, so too did Metaplanet stock, closing the year at $22.05 per share.

Cango ramps up crypto production

Cango, Inc., a Shanghai-headquartered Bitcoin mining business which is publicly listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: CANG), provided a mining operations update on Aug. 5, disclosing a significant increase in its crypto production.Photo by Dmytro Demidko on Unsplash45% increase in outputThe update outlined that in June, the firm mined 450 BTC, while holding 3,879.2 BTC, with a deployed hashrate of 32 EH/s. The figures for July show a considerable uptick, with 650.5 BTC having been mined. That Bitcoin was retained, bringing the firm’s overall Bitcoin treasury holding to 4,529.7 BTC, with a deployed hashrate of 50 EH/s. Cango CEO Paul Yu outlined that the firm had added 18 EH/s in hashpower towards the end of June. This additional capacity accounted for the increased output experienced for the month of July, representing a 45% increase month-on-month. Yu stated: “This strong performance not only demonstrates our commitment to execution but also fuels our ambition to accelerate future production.” The Cango CEO added that a new and experienced management team is now in place, and with that, Cango is focusing on working towards transitioning to “a more diversified and resilient portfolio of mining sites and energy infrastructure." Cango isn’t the only company in the Bitcoin mining sector to up its production. Cipher Mining, an American miner with facilities in Texas, also published an update, indicating that it produced 214 BTC in July with a hashrate of around 20.4 EH/s, up 21.43% month-on-month. Cipher outlined that Black Pearl Phase I, the initial 150 MW tranche of its Black Pearl facility, came on stream last month, accounting for the increased output. Unlike Cango, Cipher sold 52 BTC as part of what it described as “its regular treasury management process.” In this respect, Cango bucked a trend in comparison with its industry peers. CryptoQuant reported that miners became significant sellers of Bitcoin in July, depositing 16,000 BTC to exchanges as of July 18.Ranked by BitcoinTreasuries.net in order of Bitcoin held, Cango now holds 18th place among corporations holding BTC.Originally an automotive transaction service platform operating within the Chinese market, Cango announced a new departure last November, with the signing of agreements to buy $400 million in crypto mining equipment from a number of vendors, including Bitmain. With crypto mining a banned activity in China, the company has deployed its mining operations at various locations across North America, South America, the Middle East and East Africa. By January, the company was being referred to as a “Bitcoin mining powerhouse.” At that time, the company’s Communications Director, Juliet Ye, told CoinDesk that the firm’s entry into the Bitcoin mining sector had surprised people, given that “nobody has ever heard of Cango before.” By April, Cango had sold its legacy auto-financing business for $352 million to a firm linked to Bitmain affiliate, Antalpha, allowing it to focus exclusively on mining. The company’s stock has surged 180% over the course of the last 12 months. Ye said that the Chinese firm’s pivot to Bitcoin mining has created a buzz around the company that had been absent previously.
