Indian Crypto Exchange CoinDCX Implements Workforce Reduction

Policy & Regulation·August 23, 2023, 1:51 AM

Indian cryptocurrency exchange CoinDCX has recently taken the step of reducing its workforce by approximately 12%.

The strategic move was announced by way of a statement from CoinDCX founders Sumit Gupta and Neeraj Khandelwal, published to the firm’s website on Tuesday. The cutback is being made in response to the prolonged bear market and the consequences of India’s Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) policy on domestic exchanges.

Macroeconomic and crypto market headwinds

Gupta and Khandelwal described the decision that they’ve taken as being challenging, although they outlined that it was taken with a view toward steering the business to profitability and sustainability amidst trying macroeconomic conditions in the crypto sector.

The company has encountered significant headwinds due to the overall tough conditions in the crypto market. These challenges have resulted in decreased trading volumes and revenues for CoinDCX. In light of these circumstances, the company has determined that resizing specific teams within the organization is necessary in order to secure the viability and long-term growth of the operation.

71 jobs cut

Approximately 71 employees are being affected by the workforce reduction, out of CoinDCX’s total workforce of around 590 based in Mumbai. To mitigate the impact on these employees, the company has implemented a support package aimed at providing comprehensive assistance during this transition.

This package includes severance pay equivalent to the full notice period, an extra month of salary, compensation for variable pay and incentives, encashment of unused leave days, extension of health insurance and wellness benefits, and access to counseling support.

In spite of the necessity for workforce reduction, CoinDCX’s outlook on the Indian market remains optimistic. The company remains steadfast in its commitment to driving crypto and Web3 adoption to a target of 50 million individuals by 2025.

No further reduction plans

The founders emphasized that this reduction is a unique, targeted action and that they have no further plans for team reductions. They claim to have engaged in thorough discussions with senior leaders within the company to ascertain the best path forward, with a commitment to overcoming challenges and reinforcing the company’s foundation.

In spite of this setback CoinDCX maintains that its vision is intact, encompassing a presence not only in the Indian market but also further afield.

Industry trend

CoinDCX’s current struggle has been mirrored by a plethora of leading crypto exchanges over the course of recent months. In July, it emerged that Seychelles-based Kucoin was cutting jobs although the firm’s CEO asserted that it wasn’t a layoff plan and more so a reevaluation of the organization’s structure.

Earlier that month, Thai digital asset exchange Bitkub cut its headcount in an effort to manage costs during this period of challenging market conditions. Recently, leading global crypto exchange Binance announced one thousand job losses while stating that more jobs may be cut in the future.

The decision made by CoinDCX underscores the broader struggles that startups and businesses within the crypto space face. With the bear market’s impact and regulatory pressures, companies are being compelled to make difficult choices in pursuit of long-term sustainability.

IOTA commits $10M to advance tokenization in UAE

At the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) 13th Ministerial Conference (MC-13) in Abu Dhabi, a consortium of major global institutions including distributed ledger project IOTA came together to ink a landmark pact aimed at enhancing digital trade, including the tokenization of real-world assets. The agreement, termed the Teaming Agreement, signifies a collective effort to propel digital trade forward, emphasizing the creation of an open, non-profit and inclusive digital infrastructure for trade data sharing. The initiative involves IOTA’s recently-formed Abu Dhabi-based IOTA Ecosystem DLT Foundation.Photo by Belinda Fewings on UnsplashCapital pledgeThe Foundation has pledged an investment of $10 million towards early-stage startups focusing on digital trade and the tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs). These investments, to be unveiled publicly over the next few weeks, will support TradeTech or trade finance technology ventures and provide assistance to startups utilizing IOTA through an accelerator program. The signatories to the Teaming Agreement include esteemed organizations such as the World Economic Forum (WEF), the Institute of Export and International Trade, the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI), the IOTA Foundation, TradeMark Africa and the Global Alliance for Trade Facilitation (GATF). This collaboration brings together a diverse range of expertise and resources, blending tech and trade proficiency to streamline supply chains and customs procedures. More efficient cross-border tradeThe primary objective of the agreement is to foster collaboration and information sharing across global supply chains, with the aim of reducing barriers and enhancing inclusivity in international trade. By leveraging digital infrastructures, the coalition aims to minimize the time and cost associated with cross-border trade, thus promoting greater participation in global commerce. The timing of this agreement is particularly pertinent, given the multitude of challenges facing global supply chains. Threats such as attacks on shipping routes and the potential rise of protectionist policies underscore the necessity for enhanced information sharing and cooperation across trade networks. Trade Logistics Information Pipeline (TLIP)At the core of this initiative lies the Trade Logistics Information Pipeline (TLIP), a public global trade infrastructure developed by TradeMark Africa in collaboration with the IOTA Foundation. Leveraging open-source technology, TLIP facilitates seamless information exchange in international trade, promoting transparency and inclusivity while empowering participants to retain control over their data. The implementation of TLIP is expected to address challenges such as document loss, information discrepancies and fraud, thereby fostering a more efficient and secure global trade ecosystem. Commenting on the development, IOTA Co-Founder Dominic Schiener stated:"By investing in the future of TradeTech, we are not just facilitating smoother trade transactions; we are laying the groundwork for a more interconnected and efficient global trade ecosystem. Our collaboration with leading organizations through the TLIP is a testament to our commitment to innovation and excellence in this field." In a separate positive development for the IOTA project on Feb. 29, Jelle Millenaar, the co-founder of Impierce Technologies and a former IOTA software engineer, outlined that his company intends to develop a digital identity wallet on top of the IOTA Identity framework. The intention is to build a wallet that is compliant with digital identity regulation within the European Union.

Utilizing a debit card linked to the CBDC account, Zhalenov demonstrated the practicality of the digital tenge during his speech, showcasing its potential impact on the nation’s financial landscape. The official launch of the digital tenge on the retail market is expected to usher in a wave of development, with Zhalenov outlining that it will result in massive platform development in 2024. Collaborating with global giants Visa and Mastercard, as well as local banks, Kazakhstan aims to integrate the CBDC into plastic cards, enabling users to make digital tenge payments globally through platforms like Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.Eurasian Bank is one of the local banking participants in the project. Its CEO, Lyazzat Satiyeva, commented on the development:“Participation in the ‘Digital Tenge’ project opens up opportunities for launching innovative products for consumers and businesses using blockchain and cryptocurrency technology, developing a regulatory framework for digital assets and, in general, this is a big step in the development of a new digital economy in the country.”Meanwhile, Zhalenov emphasized the programmable capabilities of the digital tenge, envisioning its utilization in smart contracts, innovative financial services and digital asset transactions. Looking ahead, the CBDC’s development roadmap includes a focus on offline payments in 2024, with ambitions to incorporate the digital tenge into cross-border trade by 2025.The journey towards the digital tenge commenced in February 2023, with the NPC, established in September, spearheading the development and implementation of the CBDC. The launch of the NPC was likened to a restructuring of the Kazakhstan Center for Interbank Settlements. Its mandate includes overseeing interbank clearing services, managing digital identification and enabling money transfers. As Kazakhstan strides into the digital era, parallel measures have been taken to tighten oversight of the cryptocurrency market.‘Great Kazakh investment firewall’While the central Asian country may be progressing its CBDC, authorities in Kazakhstan appear to be taking a different approach to international crypto businesses operating within its borders. Following this, local crypto mining operators addressed President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in an open letter in October, urging a reconsideration of newly introduced tax rates on mining activities.Kazakhstan’s advancement of the digital tenge signals a transformative phase in the nation’s financial landscape, aligning with global trends in digital currency adoption. As the NPC continues its strategic development, the intersection of traditional finance and emerging digital assets in Kazakhstan is poised for further evolution.
