Concerns Hanging Over Huobi Result in Significant Net Outflow

Web3 & Enterprise·August 08, 2023, 2:46 AM

Amidst rumors swirling around its executives’ involvement in a Chinese investigation, Seychelles-headquartered cryptocurrency exchange Huobi has observed net outflows exceeding $73.3 million in the past week.

$73 million net outflow

According to data sourced from blockchain analytics firm Nansen, Huobi reported an outflow of tokens worth $505.9 million over the previous week, with an inflow of $432.5 million. This resulted in a net outflow of approximately $73.3 million.

Notably, this net outflow seems to be gaining momentum, as the exchange witnessed an outflow of $32.9 million on Monday alone, based on Nansen data. Additionally, Huobi’s stablecoin balances experienced a significant 33% contraction, dwindling to $99.47 million within the seven-day span, as per the data.

Unverified reports

However, the outflow of funds coincided with unverified reports. Techub News, a Hong Kong-based crypto media outlet, cited insider sources to suggest that at least three high-ranking Huobi executives had been apprehended by Chinese authorities for investigation. Huobi originated in China with Chinese founders, albeit it has based itself in Seychelles ever since the Chinese crackdown on crypto trading emerged.

Huobi’s Head of Social Media, Jiayin Xie, acknowledged the rumors and likened the situation to being “invited to tea,” a colloquial Chinese expression for being summoned by authorities for questioning. Despite this, Xie expressed concern over the baseless nature of the allegations, suggesting that the path to restoration might be challenging yet necessary for the exchange’s resurgence.

Justin Sun, an advisor to Huobi, responded cryptically by tweeting the number “4,” a term commonly used in the crypto community to counter FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt). He also retweeted Xie’s post, standing in defiance of the rumor.

Alongside this specific difficulty, Huobi continues to grapple with financial challenges. Sun revealed that the exchange hadn’t posted a profit from last year’s third quarter to this year’s second quarter. Despite this, Sun remains optimistic, projecting a potential break-even in the present quarter and a return to profitability in the upcoming quarter.

Crypto platform uncertainty

The aftermath of widespread crypto platform failures in 2022 has resulted in both regulatory pushback and concern among the crypto community relative to the well-being of the platforms that remain standing. Both Huobi and Binance are front and center of this speculation and concern. The issue is that without independently verified audits carried out by reputable auditors, market participants simply have no way of telling if these platforms are solvent.

Travis Kling, the Chief Investment Officer at Ikagai Asset Management didn’t mince his words in taking Houbi to task via Twitter: “You are clowns and criminals, and there’s a billion dollar hole in your balance sheet that customers will have to eat.” Kling has been equally scathing in his criticism of Binance and its founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ). Ikagai took a significant hit in the FTX collapse, and in its wake, Kling promised to speak out more and be more critical regarding emerging issues within the sector.

As the net outflows coincide with reports of executive custody, the situation surrounding Huobi remains fluid. The exchange’s journey through these challenges will no doubt be closely monitored by the crypto community.

BIS Collaborates with Singapore’s MAS, Bringing CBDC Pilot to a Close

BIS Collaborates with Singapore’s MAS, Bringing CBDC Pilot to a CloseThe Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has recently signified the culmination of Project Mariana, a pilot initiative centered on exploring the cross-border trading and settlement of wholesale central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).Photo by Pixabay on PexelsUpdating financial market infrastructureThe bank of central banks published the findings of the project on Thursday. Conceived in partnership with the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) alongside the central banks of France and Switzerland, the endeavor could have profound implications for the future landscape of financial market infrastructure.Project Mariana, conducted under the patronage of the BIS, harnessed principles gathered from the emerging world of DeFi to probe the viability of employing automated market makers (AMMs) for CBDC trading and settlement. The project involved three key facets:DeFi Ingenuity: Project Mariana took inspiration and cues from the DeFi universe, particularly AAMs, to streamline foreign exchange trading and settlement. This approach was designed to bolster market efficiency while curtailing settlement risks.Cross-Border CBDC Transactions: Hypothetical wholesale versions of the Swiss franc, euro, and Singapore dollar in CBDC form were tested for cross-border trading and settlement. The central banks of France, Singapore, and Switzerland orchestrated simulated transactions via AAMs to gauge feasibility.Interoperability and Token Standards: The project showcased the practical application of a standardized technical token format offered by a public blockchain, enabling seamless interoperability across various currencies. This interoperability element played a pivotal role in facilitating cross-border CBDC transactions. While the project represents a significant move forward for the BIS in its consideration of decentralized technology, the organization is still mindful that these decentralized tools are in their infancy and in need of further scrutiny and experimentation. With that, the BIS Innovation Hub has outlined its intent to further explore the prospective advantages and obstacles associated with DeFi-infused solutions within pertinent use cases going forward.Proof of conceptWhile the BIS and participating central banks were happy with the outcome of the project, the exercise was still a proof of concept and doesn’t mean there will be any immediate adoption of CBDCs by the participating nations.Rather, it spotlights the potentials of CBDCs and DeFi in streamlining financial transactions and enhancing efficiency. Central banks can oversee wholesale CBDCs without necessarily exerting control over the underlying infrastructure, thereby furnishing commercial banks with a potent tool for instantaneous FX trading and settlement while simultaneously mitigating credit and settlement risks. The project also shone a spotlight on certain challenges, including the logistical intricacies arising from the 24/7 availability of wholesale CBDCs. Nevertheless, the manifold advantages of instant foreign exchange trading and settlement appear to outweigh these hurdles.Central bankers are likely to want a different outcome from the use of this technology by comparison with those who are currently knee-deep in building out DeFi. One commentator on X had a cynical take on the project, stating: “Intermediaries attempting to justify their existence in an age with bitcoin.”Notwithstanding that, FX is the largest financial market in the world, where $7.5 trillion in value is traded every day. To utilize DeFi technology in that context would likely be profound, regardless of the nature of the application of the technology.

Indian Railways to issue NFT train tickets for world’s largest religious festival

Indian Railways (IR), the state-owned manager of India’s railway network, plans to issue non-fungible token (NFT)-based train tickets to transport pilgrims to Maha Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious festival. The Hindu festival is of particular significance given that it only occurs once every 144 years. ChainCode Consulting partnership According to a report published by Indian news outlet Pune.news on Jan. 13, IR has collaborated with ChainCode Consulting, a Bangalore-headquartered enterprise blockchain development and consulting firm, to provide the digital tickets. The Polygon blockchain has been chosen as the network upon which the NFT tickets will be minted. The tickets will then be made available to end users via NFTtrace, a real-world assets (RWA) tokenization and traceability platform run by ChainCode Consulting.Photo by Choong Deng Xiang on UnsplashLong-running collaborationService users and railway personnel will be free to check the validity of tickets on the public blockchain. This announcement is just the latest installment of a long-running collaboration between ChainCode Consulting and IR. In March 2024, a similar project was pursued by both parties. On that occasion, the collaboration involved the release of a series of NFT tickets for use on a train line running from Lucknow, the capital of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, to the Indian capital, New Delhi.  In that instance, NFTs were minted on the Hyperledger blockchain. A previous collaboration, earlier in 2024, saw NFTs minted on Polygon for digital tickets covering journeys to the sacred Hindu city of Ayodhya. Commenting on the choice of Polygon relative to this latest collaboration, Alok Gupta, CEO of ChainCode Consulting, stated: “By partnering with IRCTC and leveraging the Polygon blockchain, we are enabling a digital-first experience that complements the spiritual and traditional significance of the Mahakumbh while introducing a new level of engagement through NFTs.” Polygon is an Ethereum ecosystem scaling network. With that, it has fast throughput and low gas fees and it's on this basis that it’s understood that Polygon was chosen in this instance. Aishwary Gupta, global head of payment and fintech at Polygon Labs, the key developer behind the Polygon blockchain, told Cointelegraph that public blockchains are playing an important role in doing away with middlemen and intermediaries.  The Polygon Labs executive stated that at both state and central government levels in India, Polygon has been used on a number of projects. He added: ”With its low cost and high throughput, we are sure that the NFTs being issued around Maha Kumbh Mela would be yet another great success.” $94 billion market opportunityTicketing remains one of the proposed use cases for blockchain technology that has the potential to gain traction. That potential hasn’t gone unnoticed by ticketing industry leader Ticketmaster. In 2023 the company rolled out token-gated ticket sales. The feature enables artists to reward fans who hold NFTs with access to exclusive pre-sale events, prime concert seating and many other incentives and rewards. NFT technology offers a solution to a number of issues experienced within the events industry, including ticket scalping, fake tickets and security issues. The live events business is a $94 billion industry, underscoring the opportunity available to be exploited by innovative NFT-based ticketing startups.
