Hong Kong Crypto Licensing Yet to Result in Job Surge

Policy & Regulation·July 11, 2023, 12:25 AM

While Hong Kong has seen a rush for crypto licenses, scrambling for licensing has not yet resulted in a corresponding surge in job opportunities, according to recruiters in the industry.

Approximately 150 companies applied for a local crypto license on June 1, allowing them to operate crypto trading platforms, but recruiters have not witnessed a high demand for talent in the field. That’s according to reports received by Cointelegraph from a number of recruiters active in the crypto space in the Chinese autonomous territory.

Bear market hangover

Sue Wei, the Managing Director of major recruitment firm Hays, revealed that her firm has experienced a significant decrease in requests for recruiting technical talent since the recent dip in the crypto market. This decline was particularly notable when many talents were laid off en masse, which led to hesitancy among individuals to work for crypto companies due to the volatile nature of the business, heavily reliant on cryptocurrency prices.

Neil Dundon, the Founder of crypto recruiter Cryptorecruit, also noted a lack of significant activity in the Hong Kong market. Despite the regulatory changes, venture activity remains low. However, Dundon expressed optimism that the market has reached its bottom and expects an upward trend to emerge soon.

Olga Yung, the Managing Director of Michael Page Hong Kong, echoed the sentiment, stating that there hasn’t been a substantial increase in individuals seeking jobs in the Web3 sector, despite the government’s recent efforts to promote it. However, Yung did mention a slight increase in Web3 firms seeking legal and compliance hires in the latter half of Q2 2023.

At the time of publication, 85 crypto-related jobs were being advertised on LinkedIn. Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s Cyberport, the city’s flagship technology hub, has attracted more than 150 companies operating within the Web3 space over the course of the past 12 months. Authorities in Hong Kong are also trying to entice Web3 companies based in mainland China to establish bases within Hong Kong.

Increased job openings anticipated

Although these firms have displayed enthusiasm in entering the Hong Kong market, the recruitment needs of the crypto industry remain relatively light at present, as many Web3 companies are still in their early stages of development. However, recruiters anticipate a rise in job openings as these companies continue to grow and mature.

Kevin Gibson, Founder of Proof of Search, a Web3 recruitment specialist, said that it may take six months before current crypto licensing activity in Hong Kong translates into a surge in demand for staff. Gibson maintains that specialist talent in Hong Kong is in short supply due to many such professionals having left the city in recent years.

While Hong Kong has witnessed a rush for crypto licenses, the recruitment landscape in the industry has yet to experience a corresponding surge. However, recruiters remain optimistic about future job opportunities as Web3 companies progress and regulatory conditions stabilize.

With Singapore-based Matrixport and international banking firm Standard Chartered both predicting a Bitcoin unit price in the region of $120,000 by the end of 2024, the market is expected to trend upward in the coming months. That could potentially lead to increased hiring activity in the crypto sector.

Intella X Explores Ways to Integrate YGG’s Soulbound Reputation Tokens into Its Wallet

Intella X Explores Ways to Integrate YGG’s Soulbound Reputation Tokens into Its WalletIntella X, a South Korean Web3 gaming platform, has announced its partnership with Yield Guild Games (YGG), a leading DeFi-powered gaming guild.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashBoosting Intella X’s global presenceThis collaborative effort is expected to boost Intella X’s presence in the global Web3 sector. YGG, boasting a membership base of over 450,000 worldwide and collaborating with more than 80 gaming companies, recently launched Superquest, a new way to earn in-game rewards. Superquest awards soulbound reputation tokens to gamers based on their level of community engagement and contributions. The two organizations will explore ways to integrate YGG soulbound reputation tokens into Intella X Wallet (IX Wallet), a Web3 wallet designated for the Intella X platform. In an attempt to expand its ecosystem, Intella X has soft-launched the Android and web versions of IX Wallet. Furthermore, the Korean Web3 platform in February joined forces with IndiGG, a sub-decentralized autonomous organization of YGG in India.Neowiz’s Q2 financialsIn the midst of these developments, Neowiz, the parent company of Intella X, last week disclosed its financial performance for the second quarter. The company garnered revenues amounting to KRW 70.1 billion ($52.7 million), signifying a year-on-year decrease of 0.2%. Neowiz incurred an operating loss of KRW 4.9 billion during the same period, venturing into negative territory in Q2. This setback can be attributed to escalated marketing expenditures associated with the launch of the mobile role-playing game “Brown Dust 2” and the third-year anniversary celebration of the MMORPG title “Kingdom.” The latter is the brainchild of game developer FOW Games, a company Neowiz acquired in May.Meanwhile, Neowiz’s Q2 net income recorded an 8% year-over-year increase, totaling KRW 22.4 billion. This one-time gain is due to the sale of certain shares the company owned in another entity as part of the wider FOW Games acquisition strategy.Path to recoveryIn the latter half of this year, Neowiz is gearing up for recovery, channeling its focus into in-house developed titles. A key highlight among these is the imminent launch of “Lies of P” on September 19. As the launch date of this soulslike video game, inspired by the narrative of Pinocchio, draws near, the company is poised to offer game packages for pre-sale commencing September 17. These packages will be accessible both online and in-person through the e-commerce platform SSG.com and the warehouse chain E-Mart Traders. An extensive global marketing campaign is also in the works, with Neowiz set to participate in Germany’s Gamescom 2023 later this month.

Sony Singapore partners with Crypto.com to enable USDC payments

Sony Electronics Singapore has partnered with Singapore-headquartered Crypto.com to enable USDC stablecoin payments for local consumers on Sony’s online store. In a statement published on April 2, Crypto.com provided details on the development. By accessing Crypto.com’s payment system, Sony customers in Singapore can pay for items on the Sony platform using the U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin.Photo by Alwin Thomas on UnsplashPlans to expand payment optionsThe gaming, entertainment and consumer electronics giant also outlined that USDC payments are a starting point, with plans to expand the offering to include other crypto payment options in the future. Commenting on the development, Crypto.com’s General Manager for Singapore, Chin Tah Ang, stated: “We’re pushing to make paying in crypto more mainstream and partnering with a well-established and forward-thinking brand like Sony Electronics Singapore further raises awareness of how simple it can be to pay for everyday goods and services using crypto.” The Crypto.com executive added that a high-profile brand like Sony would provide further visibility with regard to crypto payments. Sony dominates the gaming console market in Singapore, with a 61% share of the market within the city-state. A successful roll-out of this crypto payment option in Singapore could potentially lead to further roll-outs in other regions. Keeping pace with shift towards cryptoBlockchain industry pioneer Kyle Chasse, outlined on X that the development demonstrates that adoption isn’t coming, rather that it has already arrived. Sony sees the move as an effort the firm is making to “stay ahead of the curve” and future-proof its operations. It has formed the view that diversifying payment options to include crypto payments is necessary in order to keep pace with what it perceives as a global shift towards the use and integration of crypto.  Ang sees upside for both companies as a consequence of the development. He stated: “This payment integration will not only benefit our users by giving them another way to utilise their crypto in the real world, but we believe adding a new and streamlined crypto payment method will also broaden [Sony Electronics Singapore’s] customer base.”  This development is not Sony’s first touchpoint with crypto and blockchain. In recent times, it has developed its own blockchain, Soneium. The Ethereum layer-2 network officially launched its mainnet in January. In 2024, Sony Group acquired Amber Japan, the Japanese subsidiary of Singaporean crypto market maker Amber Group. Last year, another Sony Group company, Sony Bank, announced plans to develop a stablecoin in partnership with Astar Network, a Polkadot-based smart contract platform.  Commenting on Sony’s participation within the crypto and blockchain space last year, independent game designer Chad Steingraber said, “Sony entering crypto is a MUCH bigger deal than people realize yet.” He predicted that the entire entertainment sector will become engulfed by crypto assets.  At the time, Steingraber was reacting to the news that Singaporean financial services firm Phillip Securities and Securitize were planning a security token offering in connection with a Sony movie production.
