Animoca Brands Remains Bullish on Blockchain Gaming

Web3 & Enterprise·July 07, 2023, 12:28 AM

Blockchain-based games have gained significant attention within the cryptocurrency space, witnessing remarkable growth and daily activity across various protocols despite challenging market conditions. Hong Kong-based Animoca Brands, the Web3 and metaverse company, recently pronounced its bullishness where blockchain gaming is concerned.

In 2022 alone, Web3 gaming attracted approximately $4.5 billion in funding, as asset managers, investment funds, and venture capitalists sought to capitalize on the flourishing sector. In an interview with Cointelegraph, Yat Siu, Co-Founder of Animoca Brands, expressed the company’s renewed optimism in the blockchain gaming sector and provided an update on its eagerly anticipated metaverse fund, which made headlines in late 2022.

Animoca’s metaverse fund

The metaverse fund, originally planned to have a budget of up to $2 billion in November 2022, aimed to invest in mid to late-stage startups focused on developing metaverse products and experiences. However, due to recent volatility affecting the cryptocurrency space, Animoca Brands scaled back its investment target to $1 billion in January 2023. Reports in March suggested a further reduction to $800 million.

While awaiting the required license to launch the metaverse fund, Siu emphasized that Animoca Brands has been actively investing in early-stage startups through its venture arm, with additional investments directly from the company’s balance sheet. Currently, the company boasts a portfolio of over 450 companies.

AAA blockchain games anticipated

Despite the challenges, Siu anticipates the release of several “AAA” blockchain games, in which Animoca Brands has made investments, by the end of 2023 or early 2024. Siu believes that the quality of titles backed by Animoca Brands, built on open protocol systems such as Ethereum and Polygon, will contribute to the long-term sustainability of the sector. He underlined the importance of these games being on-chain, enabling third parties to leverage the capabilities of blockchain technology and explore exciting possibilities.

Siu also highlighted the significant role of scaling protocols like Polygon and technological advancements such as zero-knowledge proofs in boosting the development and quality of upcoming blockchain games. Immutable, a layer-2 platform, effectively reduced costs and improved transaction speeds for NFT generation in blockchain games. Choosing the right blockchain platform, especially Ethereum, is crucial for success in the industry.

While fully decentralized games present challenges, Siu acknowledged that a hybrid on-chain and off-chain approach might be more suitable as the industry progresses towards true decentralization. Certain game features, such as provenance and skins, lend themselves well to on-chain implementation, while others may require a gradual transition.

Integrating blockchain tech with existing gaming

Siu emphasized the potential for integrating blockchain elements into the existing gaming culture worldwide. By designing interfaces that are familiar to gamers and gradually introducing crypto and Web3 experiences, gaming companies can facilitate the adoption of blockchain technology while promoting financial literacy among players.

The Head of Animoca Ventures, an Animoca Brands sister company, recently explained that key Japanese games console makers are also showing an interest in blockchain gaming.

Looking ahead, the year 2023 and beyond are critical for the blockchain gaming sector. The release of high-quality games, coupled with significant investments, will shape the long-term success of the industry. With its extensive portfolio and unwavering optimism, Animoca Brands remains dead set on driving innovation and pushing the boundaries of blockchain gaming.

KDIC Seizes Crypto from Debtors Linked to Losses at Financial Firms

KDIC Seizes Crypto from Debtors Linked to Losses at Financial FirmsDuring the first half of this year, the Korea Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC) tracked the cryptocurrency holdings of 1,075 individuals and debtors responsible for causing losses at financial entities, including savings banks, according to documents obtained by local news outlet Herald Economy, from the office of lawmaker Kim Han-kyu, a member of the National Assembly’s National Policy Committee. From this scrutiny, KDIC identified 29 wrongful cases and proceeded to confiscate cryptocurrencies in 16 of those instances.KDIC is a semi-state body that has been instrumental in tracing and recovering assets from culpable employees at troubled financial firms and debtors in arrears. Meanwhile, methods for hiding wealth have become more sophisticated, typically unfolding behind the curtain.Photo by Georg Bommeli on UnsplashFirst crypto seizureOut of these individuals, 900 had taken out loans of at least KRW 3 billion ($2.2 million) from beleaguered financial institutions, while the remaining 175 were employees of these institutions, held responsible for their failures. This occasion represents the KDIC’s first seizure of virtual assets.Until recently, the KDIC struggled to reclaim hidden assets funneled into cryptocurrency exchanges, given their limited authority to seek documentation. KDIC’s purview mainly extended to requesting information from public institutions, banks, insurance companies, and securities firms. However, KDIC has now found a way to seize crypto assets by investigating the bank accounts linked to these exchanges. In Korea, crypto exchanges facilitating Korean won trades are legally mandated to secure real-name accounts from banks.Call for expanding KDIC’s authorityGiven the evidence of using cryptocurrencies to conceal wealth, many suggest that amendments to the Depositor Protection Act are necessary, enabling KDIC to directly request relevant data from exchanges and recover more hidden assets effectively.Furthermore in August KDIC secured a court order allowing them to liquidate these assets. Following this successful confiscation, the debtors’ cryptocurrencies have been frozen in their wallets, rendering them unresponsive to any market shifts. Discussions are now underway regarding the method of liquidating the debtors’ cryptocurrencies at market value on exchanges. This includes deliberations on whether KDIC will assume ownership of the cryptocurrencies and directly proceed with their sale.In a chat with Herald Economy, Lawmaker Kim emphasized the need for KDIC to have the authority to access information from virtual asset service providers. This would enable them to more effectively retrieve assets from responsible debtors. Kim further stated that such steps would enhance both the efficiency of debt collection and overall market fairness.

XREX secures MPI license from Singapore regulator

XREX secures MPI license from Singapore regulatorTaipei-based cryptocurrency exchange XREX has received in-principle approval from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) for a Major Payment Institution (MPI) license.Photo by Mark König on UnsplashBitCheck payment tool offeringThe approval marks a crucial step for the fledgling exchange business, enabling it to offer digital payment token products and services in Singapore. Once it’s upgraded to a full license, XREX will be able to expand its BitCheck payment tool, currently facilitating transactions involving fiat currencies, stablecoins and various cryptocurrencies. This regulatory milestone places XREX among the approved exchanges, stablecoin issuers, neobanks and payment service providers in Singapore. Since the introduction of the licensing regime in January 2020, the MAS has received over 580 applications for payment services licenses, with fewer than 20 Digital Payment Token (DPT) licenses and in-principle approvals granted to date. XREX now joins the ranks of established entities like Coinbase, DBS Vickers, Circle, Paxos, Ripple and Revolut in receiving approval from the MAS.Taking to X on Friday, the company acknowledged the license award while outlining that the license would mean that it can now start to offer an e-money issuance service, cross-border money transfers, account issuance services, digital payment token services, as well as merchant acquisition and domestic money transfer services.Serving home and overseas marketsWayne Huang, Co-Founder and Group CEO of XREX, emphasized that XREX Singapore will serve as the primary provider of products across the Asia Pacific (APAC) region. Simultaneously, XREX Taiwan will continue to play a pivotal role in product design, engineering, research and threat analysis functions for the company. Positioning itself as the Asia Pacific headquarters for the group, XREX Singapore aims to target emerging markets in the region where access to USD liquidity may present challenges.Christopher Chye, CEO of XREX Singapore, expressed the significance of the approval, noting the thorough scrutiny by Singapore’s regulatory authorities. Chye stated:“Singapore wants to attract responsible actors, and the reality is that doing so necessitates a fine-tooth comb. This is great for Singapore and great for our industry as a whole. XREX is looking forward to introducing cheaper, safer, and faster domestic and cross-border payments for Singapore and emerging market businesses.”It was no secret that the company had been working towards acquiring a license in Singapore for some time. In December 2022, its Singapore team tweeted out such a claim, adding that an MPI license from MAS “is one of the most coveted and well-regarded licenses worldwide.”Highlighting Singapore’s progressive and robust regulatory framework, Nick Chang, XREX Group and XREX Singapore Head of Compliance, said:“Singapore boasts a progressive and robust regulatory framework, offering our users the clarity and confidence they need to access digital assets and use stablecoins.”XREX has also made in-roads into the European market. In May of last year, the company opened an office in Lithuania, while becoming a crypto asset service provider within the Baltic state. Earlier this year the company strengthened its compliance process by integrating transaction monitoring and investigative tools from blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis.
