Animoca Brands Remains Bullish on Blockchain Gaming

Web3 & Enterprise·July 07, 2023, 12:28 AM

Blockchain-based games have gained significant attention within the cryptocurrency space, witnessing remarkable growth and daily activity across various protocols despite challenging market conditions. Hong Kong-based Animoca Brands, the Web3 and metaverse company, recently pronounced its bullishness where blockchain gaming is concerned.

In 2022 alone, Web3 gaming attracted approximately $4.5 billion in funding, as asset managers, investment funds, and venture capitalists sought to capitalize on the flourishing sector. In an interview with Cointelegraph, Yat Siu, Co-Founder of Animoca Brands, expressed the company’s renewed optimism in the blockchain gaming sector and provided an update on its eagerly anticipated metaverse fund, which made headlines in late 2022.

Animoca’s metaverse fund

The metaverse fund, originally planned to have a budget of up to $2 billion in November 2022, aimed to invest in mid to late-stage startups focused on developing metaverse products and experiences. However, due to recent volatility affecting the cryptocurrency space, Animoca Brands scaled back its investment target to $1 billion in January 2023. Reports in March suggested a further reduction to $800 million.

While awaiting the required license to launch the metaverse fund, Siu emphasized that Animoca Brands has been actively investing in early-stage startups through its venture arm, with additional investments directly from the company’s balance sheet. Currently, the company boasts a portfolio of over 450 companies.

AAA blockchain games anticipated

Despite the challenges, Siu anticipates the release of several “AAA” blockchain games, in which Animoca Brands has made investments, by the end of 2023 or early 2024. Siu believes that the quality of titles backed by Animoca Brands, built on open protocol systems such as Ethereum and Polygon, will contribute to the long-term sustainability of the sector. He underlined the importance of these games being on-chain, enabling third parties to leverage the capabilities of blockchain technology and explore exciting possibilities.

Siu also highlighted the significant role of scaling protocols like Polygon and technological advancements such as zero-knowledge proofs in boosting the development and quality of upcoming blockchain games. Immutable, a layer-2 platform, effectively reduced costs and improved transaction speeds for NFT generation in blockchain games. Choosing the right blockchain platform, especially Ethereum, is crucial for success in the industry.

While fully decentralized games present challenges, Siu acknowledged that a hybrid on-chain and off-chain approach might be more suitable as the industry progresses towards true decentralization. Certain game features, such as provenance and skins, lend themselves well to on-chain implementation, while others may require a gradual transition.

Integrating blockchain tech with existing gaming

Siu emphasized the potential for integrating blockchain elements into the existing gaming culture worldwide. By designing interfaces that are familiar to gamers and gradually introducing crypto and Web3 experiences, gaming companies can facilitate the adoption of blockchain technology while promoting financial literacy among players.

The Head of Animoca Ventures, an Animoca Brands sister company, recently explained that key Japanese games console makers are also showing an interest in blockchain gaming.

Looking ahead, the year 2023 and beyond are critical for the blockchain gaming sector. The release of high-quality games, coupled with significant investments, will shape the long-term success of the industry. With its extensive portfolio and unwavering optimism, Animoca Brands remains dead set on driving innovation and pushing the boundaries of blockchain gaming.

HTX and Heco Chain exploited with $115 million loss

HTX and Heco Chain exploited with $115 million lossSeychelles-incorporated cryptocurrency exchange HTX, linked to digital-asset entrepreneur Justin Sun, has fallen victim to a significant hack, only a few months after having suffered another hack in September.Photo by Markus Spiske on UnsplashSecond HTX hack in recent monthsThe last hack, involving a loss of digital assets to the value of $8 million, was resolved when the hacker agreed to return funds in October in return for a goodwill payment of around $400,000.This latest unfortunate incident follows another hack on Poloniex, also associated with Sun, just weeks ago. Sun acknowledged the HTX hack in a tweet, announcing the temporary suspension of deposits and withdrawals without specifying the exact amount pilfered.Separate Heco Chain hackIt is understood that approximately $30 million worth of cryptocurrencies was siphoned from the exchange wallet. The platform is actively investigating the breach, aiming to uncover the specifics surrounding the attack. Simultaneously, the HECO Bridge, which was established by HTX for cost-effective fund transfers across different blockchains, experienced a separate hack. This breach resulted in losses exceeding $85 million, including ETH, US dollar stablecoin Tether (USDT) and various other tokens. Although initially launched by HTX, HECO operates independently from the HTX exchange.Crypto community concernThese security breaches cast a shadow over Sun’s crypto ventures, especially considering the recent hack on Poloniex, which saw losses surpassing $100 million in various cryptocurrencies. A spokesperson for crypto security firm Hacken told Cointelegraph that these hacks could be the work of an insider.“We can see that all these attacks have the same target: Justin Sun’s projects,” the spokesperson stated. These related incidents are the cause of significant speculation within the crypto space, with some concern expressed about the financial health of HTX, given that the firm is currently offering unsustainable interest rates of up to 100% APY on a selection of digital assets. In response to the HTX hack, Justin Sun assured the community in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that HTX would fully compensate for the losses incurred in its hot wallet. The exchange has temporarily halted deposits and withdrawals as the investigation unfolds. Sun emphasized the commitment to resume services once the investigation concludes and the cause of the breach is identified. These incidents raise questions about the security infrastructure of platforms associated with Justin Sun. The crypto community awaits further details on the investigation’s outcomes and preventive measures that will be implemented to fortify these exchanges against future attacks.Such recent security breaches have not just affected Justin Sun-related enterprises. Earlier this month, decentralized exchange (DEX) KyberSwap was exploited to the tune of $46.5 million. Earlier this week, Kronos Research — a Taipei-based crypto trading, market making and venture capital platform — experienced a $25.6 million loss. The past twenty days have seen five major hacks resulting in an aggregate loss of a staggering $290 million. As the crypto industry grapples with increasing security challenges, the importance of robust protective measures cannot be overstated. These developments underscore the need for a cautious and diligent approach in safeguarding digital assets within the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency landscape.

Coinbase Ventures invests in Indian exchange CoinDCX amid mixed regulatory signals

Coinbase's venture capital arm, Coinbase Ventures, has invested in the India-based crypto trading platform CoinDCX, the American crypto exchange company said on its official blog. This move follows Coinbase's direct entry into the Indian market earlier this year. In March, Coinbase registered with the Financial Intelligence Unit–India (FIU-IND), announcing plans to launch products for retail investors.Photo by PiggyBank on Unsplash100 million crypto holdersWhile the investment sum remains undisclosed, Coinbase highlighted CoinDCX's strong performance indicators. As of July 2025, the Mumbai-headquartered exchange reported a user base of 20.4 million, accounting for about one-fifth of the country’s estimated 100 million crypto holders. CoinDCX also recorded $141 million in annualized group revenue, $165 billion in annualized transaction volumes, and $1.2 billion in assets under custody. The investment targets a market with high adoption. According to Chainalysis’ 2025 Global Crypto Adoption Index, India ranked first among 151 countries studied. Regulatory uncertainty in IndiaCoinbase’s push into India, however, comes amid a complex and often contradictory regulatory environment for digital assets. On one hand, India maintains a cautious stance. Profits from crypto transactions are taxed at a flat 30% rate, supplemented by applicable surcharges and an additional 4% cess. Recent reforms unveiled by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) did not mention the acceptance of crypto assets. Rather than supporting cryptocurrencies, regulators have focused on advancing the central bank digital currency (CBDC), the e-rupee, through pilot initiatives in deposit tokenization and a fintech sandbox. This conservative approach was also evident at the recent 6th Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai. According to Reuters, a handout given to speakers at the Oct. 7-9 event read, “Please avoid political, crypto, religious, or personal remarks on stage or at the venue.” On the other hand, some officials have signaled a willingness to engage. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Oct. 4 that India must prepare to engage with cryptocurrencies such as stablecoins, according to the Financial Times. She noted that no country can stay isolated from broader systemic shifts, possibly alluding to the pro-crypto policies emerging in the U.S. and the anticipated acceleration in adoption. Global exchanges resume operationsFurthermore, India has shown more openness to foreign crypto platforms lately. Bybit recently reinstated access to its mobile app for Indian users via the Apple App Store and Google Play. Last year, both Binance and KuCoin registered with the FIU-IND after paying penalties for earlier compliance violations. Binance was fined 188.2 million rupees (about $2.14 million), while KuCoin faced a lighter penalty of around $41,000.
