Xapo Bank, a cryptocurrency bank based in Gibraltar, has set its sights on India and plans to offer banking and cryptocurrency services in the country.

Xapo, which claims to be the first bank in the world to integrate traditional private banking with crypto, issued a press release which was published via Bloomberg on Thursday to announce the development.

Massive market opportunity

With a population of over 1.3 billion, India presents a massive opportunity for Xapo Bank, which is backed by prominent investors like SoftBank, DST Global, and Ribbit Capital. This move comes at a time when India has seen impressive foreign inflows of $15.5 billion in the first quarter of 2023.

The CEO of Xapo Bank, Seamus Rocca, suggested that the absence of conventional banking services in certain parts of South Asia has created a void that Xapo Bank aims to fill. By providing innovative financial products and services, the bank hopes to empower individuals and businesses with access to reliable and inclusive banking solutions.

Rocca stated that the move “represents an opportunity to provide our hybrid banking and investment solutions to its large underserved populations, bridging an important gap in the region’s financial systems and allowing its savvy savers, investors, and professionals the freedom to explore their financial potential with a single mobile application.”

Competitive interest rate offering

One of the attractive features of Xapo Bank for customers in India is its competitive interest rates on deposits. The bank offers attractive returns, with a yearly interest rate of 4.10% on US dollar deposits and 1.00% on Bitcoin deposits. Notably, the daily interest payments on Bitcoin deposits are distributed in the smallest denomination of the cryptocurrency, a satoshi.

Xapo Bank’s expansion into India aligns with the country’s projected economic growth of 6.3%, according to Fitch Ratings. Despite the worldwide economic downturn, India’s GDP demonstrated robust growth of 6.1% in the first quarter, showcasing the country’s resilience.

Government policy challenges

However, Xapo Bank will face challenges as it enters the Indian market. The world’s most populous country has implemented strict measures regarding cryptocurrencies, including a 30% tax on all cryptocurrency income and the elimination of deductibility for losses. Such regulations could potentially impact Xapo Bank’s operations and profitability in India.

Authorities like the country’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), have been more inclined to encourage the financial services sector to adopt blockchain technology rather than offer cryptocurrencies directly. Earlier this month, American multinational financial services company JPMorgan Chase partnered with six major Indian banks in a blockchain offering that aims to improve the interbank settlement process.

Nevertheless, Xapo Bank remains undeterred, recognizing the immense potential of India’s growing economy and the urgent need for accessible financial services. The bank’s expansion promises to create opportunities for individuals and businesses across the nation, contributing to India’s economic development and financial inclusion.

Moreover, Xapo Bank’s entry into India reflects a broader trend of fintech innovation and the convergence of traditional banking and digital currencies. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, financial institutions like Xapo Bank are reshaping the financial services landscape by offering forward-thinking solutions that bridge gaps, ultimately empowering individuals and fostering economic growth.

Indian PM Narendra Modi Calls for Global Crypto Regulatory Framework

Indian PM Narendra Modi Calls for Global Crypto Regulatory FrameworkAmid the rising tide of emerging technologies like cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the urgent need for a worldwide regulatory framework to ensure user safety and ethical utilization. His remarks were delivered at the G20 Summit India 2023, where he stressed the importance of cohesive global efforts in shaping the future of technological advancements.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashG20 PresidencyIndia, currently holding the G20 Presidency for 2023, has taken a strong stance in advocating for the establishment of a comprehensive global regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies. Earlier this month, the country released a presidency note outlining its insights into the proposed framework. These recommendations are closely aligned with the guidelines set forth by authoritative bodies such as the Financial Stability Board (FSB), the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).Notably, India’s presidency note extended its considerations beyond established economies to include provisions for developing nations relative to crypto. At the time, it was revealed that a collaborative “synthesis paper” was in the works, jointly crafted by the IMF and the FSB. This paper, set to be unveiled by the end of August, will delve into the global macro implications stemming from the adoption and growth of cryptocurrency. The timing of this release is particularly significant, coinciding with the upcoming G20 Summit scheduled for September 9.Establishing a global frameworkAddressing the G20 Summit, Prime Minister Modi articulated his vision for a world unified under a comprehensive regulatory framework not only for cryptocurrencies but also for the ethical utilization of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. In an interview with media platform Business Today, he emphasized the reality of rapid technological progress sweeping across the globe. Instead of dismissing or wishing away these advancements, Modi underscored the need for proactive adoption, democratization, and a unified global approach.Modi’s perspective underscores his support for a harmonized global strategy when it comes to formulating regulatory frameworks for emerging technologies. Drawing a parallel with the aviation industry, he highlighted how air traffic control and air security are governed by common global rules and regulations, illustrating the effectiveness of a consensus-based model.Expanding on the implications of India’s G20 presidency, Modi shed light on the deliberations centered around cryptocurrency’s potential impact within broader macroeconomic contexts, particularly within emerging and developing economies.Regulatory needs at a national levelWithin India, various stakeholders have been struggling with the regulation of cryptocurrencies themselves. In July, the Indian Supreme Court criticized the government for its failure to establish clear crypto-related regulations. The country’s central bank, the Royal Bank of India (RBI), has been less enthusiastic about decentralized cryptocurrency, warning of the risks extended by stablecoins more recently. Instead, it has proven to be far more interested in advancing the use of permissioned blockchain networks and a central bank digital currency (CBDC).The proposition of a globally accepted set of guidelines for cryptocurrency regulation has garnered substantial support from authorities worldwide as they begin to understand the difficulty that decentralized technology presents in terms of controlling it. If Modi’s vision translates into reality, it could mark a significant step toward standardizing the governance of cryptocurrencies on an international scale.

Web3 Security Startup Blockaid Raises $33M in Funding

Web3 Security Startup Blockaid Raises $33M in FundingIsraeli enterprise Blockaid, a Web3 security startup founded by two former Israeli military cyber intelligence personnel, has secured a total of $33 million in funding. The recent Series A round of $27 million was led by Ribbit Capital and Variant and saw participation from Cyberstarts, Sequoia Capital, and Greylock Partners. This funding totals $33 million when consolidated with an initial $6 million seed round.Photo by Shubham’s Web3 on UnsplashSecuring Web3 against threatsBlockaid offers comprehensive Web3 security solutions designed to combat crypto fraud, phishing, and hacks. Its approach involves the examination of both on-chain and off-chain transactions. In this way, the firm is seeking to set itself apart from competitors like CertiK and Cyvers. The company’s decentralized application (dApp) Scanning Engine simulates and validates blockchain transactions before they are executed. This process takes place within Blockaid’s dApp Scanning Sandbox, which also assesses the potential maliciousness of interactions and dApps.Since its inception in September 2022, Blockaid claims to have successfully scanned over 450 million transactions, preventing over 1.3 million attacks and safeguarding more than $7.1 billion in assets. Furthermore, the Israeli startup’s efforts have averted losses of over $500 million in the Web3 ecosystem.Recent success storiesOne notable success story involves the prevention of a phishing attack targeting Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin’s X (formerly Twitter) account. Due to Blockaid’s security measures, users’ wallets remained protected, though unsecured wallets with approximately $700,000 in assets, including valuable NFTs, suffered losses in the attack. Blockaid has been involved in enhancing security for prominent platforms, including MetaMask, OpenSea, Zerion Wallet, and Rainbow Wallet. With the newly acquired funds, Blockaid aims to expand its client base and meet an increasing demand for its security solutions. Ido Ben-Natan, co-founder and CEO of Blockaid, expressed confidence in their ability to support both existing and new customers during these market conditions. Blockaid operates from New York and Tel Aviv and plans to bolster its workforce by hiring additional personnel across various functions.Addressing the Web3 security challengeThe significance of Blockaid’s work becomes even more apparent when considering the current challenges in the Web3 space. In recent years, the Web3 sector has faced a rising tide of fraud, phishing attempts, and hacks. As noted by Ben-Natan, Web3 has experienced staggering losses, with $14 billion stolen in just one year, surpassing losses in all non-crypto cyber-crime combined. Additionally, one in ten decentralized applications (dApps) has been identified as malicious, making even crypto-savvy users susceptible to malicious actors.Furthermore, there is a growing concern about nation-state actors actively targeting and stealing user funds for their economic gain. In this adversarial and uncertain environment, the usability and security of Web3 must be enhanced to unlock its full potential. Blockaid’s innovative security tools aim to provide the necessary protection for Web3 builders and users. There’s no doubt that Web3 has to become more seamless and far more secure if it is to appeal to the mass market. In its blog post announcing the funding round, the project stated:”We believe that users shouldn’t have to know they’re interacting with crypto. We believe that web3 should just work, and work securely.”
