Xapo Bank, a cryptocurrency bank based in Gibraltar, has set its sights on India and plans to offer banking and cryptocurrency services in the country.

Xapo, which claims to be the first bank in the world to integrate traditional private banking with crypto, issued a press release which was published via Bloomberg on Thursday to announce the development.

Massive market opportunity

With a population of over 1.3 billion, India presents a massive opportunity for Xapo Bank, which is backed by prominent investors like SoftBank, DST Global, and Ribbit Capital. This move comes at a time when India has seen impressive foreign inflows of $15.5 billion in the first quarter of 2023.

The CEO of Xapo Bank, Seamus Rocca, suggested that the absence of conventional banking services in certain parts of South Asia has created a void that Xapo Bank aims to fill. By providing innovative financial products and services, the bank hopes to empower individuals and businesses with access to reliable and inclusive banking solutions.

Rocca stated that the move “represents an opportunity to provide our hybrid banking and investment solutions to its large underserved populations, bridging an important gap in the region’s financial systems and allowing its savvy savers, investors, and professionals the freedom to explore their financial potential with a single mobile application.”

Competitive interest rate offering

One of the attractive features of Xapo Bank for customers in India is its competitive interest rates on deposits. The bank offers attractive returns, with a yearly interest rate of 4.10% on US dollar deposits and 1.00% on Bitcoin deposits. Notably, the daily interest payments on Bitcoin deposits are distributed in the smallest denomination of the cryptocurrency, a satoshi.

Xapo Bank’s expansion into India aligns with the country’s projected economic growth of 6.3%, according to Fitch Ratings. Despite the worldwide economic downturn, India’s GDP demonstrated robust growth of 6.1% in the first quarter, showcasing the country’s resilience.

Government policy challenges

However, Xapo Bank will face challenges as it enters the Indian market. The world’s most populous country has implemented strict measures regarding cryptocurrencies, including a 30% tax on all cryptocurrency income and the elimination of deductibility for losses. Such regulations could potentially impact Xapo Bank’s operations and profitability in India.

Authorities like the country’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), have been more inclined to encourage the financial services sector to adopt blockchain technology rather than offer cryptocurrencies directly. Earlier this month, American multinational financial services company JPMorgan Chase partnered with six major Indian banks in a blockchain offering that aims to improve the interbank settlement process.

Nevertheless, Xapo Bank remains undeterred, recognizing the immense potential of India’s growing economy and the urgent need for accessible financial services. The bank’s expansion promises to create opportunities for individuals and businesses across the nation, contributing to India’s economic development and financial inclusion.

Moreover, Xapo Bank’s entry into India reflects a broader trend of fintech innovation and the convergence of traditional banking and digital currencies. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, financial institutions like Xapo Bank are reshaping the financial services landscape by offering forward-thinking solutions that bridge gaps, ultimately empowering individuals and fostering economic growth.

Metaplanet issues more bonds to buy Bitcoin & opens U.S. subsidiary

Japanese Bitcoin treasury firm Metaplanet has opened a U.S. subsidiary company in Florida while also issuing 3.6 billion Japanese yen ($24.7 million) in bonds for the purpose of buying more Bitcoin.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashAccelerating the Bitcoin strategyIn an announcement on May 1, the company outlined that it had established Metaplanet Treasury Corporation in Miami, Florida. The firm cited the purpose of the subsidiary as a means through which it can accelerate its overriding strategy of accumulating more Bitcoin. Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich commented on X on the rationale behind locating the U.S. subsidiary in Florida, stating:”The reason for choosing Florida is clear: the state is rapidly emerging as a global hub for Bitcoin innovation, corporate adoption and financial liberalization.” Gerovich added that the newly formed company will enhance Metaplanet’s “around-the-clock operational capabilities across time zones.” The Metaplanet CEO sees the development as part of the firm’s evolution as a global Bitcoin treasury company.  $250 million capital raiseThe company stated that it had already established a corporate entity in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), with the U.S. addition enhancing the company’s ability “to respond to market dynamics with speed and precision.”  Metaplanet intends to raise $250 million in funding through the Miami-based entity, having launched it with initial capital of $10 million. It’s envisaged that the U.S. subsidiary can act as a vehicle to attract institutional investment.  Back in March it was reported that Metaplanet was investigating the idea of listing its stock in the U.S. At the time, Gerovich stated that the firm was “considering the best way to make Metaplanet shares more accessible to investors around the world.” As part of that process, Gerovich met with officials from the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq.  In further U.S.-related developments, the company appointed Eric Trump, second son of U.S. President Donald Trump, to its strategic board of advisors in March. Last week, Metaplanet appointed David Bailey, CEO of Bitcoin Magazine, to its strategic board of advisors. Bond issuanceIn a separate development, Metaplanet has issued 3.6 billion Japanese yen ($24.7 million) in 0% ordinary bonds to purchase additional Bitcoin. The company used its EVO FUND as the mechanism through which it issued the bonds.  It has set out a goal of accumulating 10,000 BTC by the end of the year. Currently, the company holds 5,000 BTC. One community member believes that Metaplanet could hit this target as early as July on the basis of ongoing share dilution.Appearing on The Bitcoin Treasuries Podcast earlier this year, Metaplanet’s Director of Bitcoin Strategy, Dylan LeClair, described how prior to adopting its Bitcoin treasury strategy in 2024, the firm was a “zombie” on the Tokyo stock exchange with the pandemic having had a negative impact on the company’s fortunes.  He outlined that the company consolidated and dealt with some debt issues, but at that point it lacked a clear strategy. It then set out to replicate the success of U.S. Bitcoin treasury pioneer, Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy). On May 1 Gerovich posted on X that the company had achieved unrealized gains on Bitcoin exceeding six billion yen ($41.68 million).

Boyaa Interactive Greenlights $5 Million Investment in Bitcoin and Ether

Boyaa Interactive Greenlights $5 Million Investment in Bitcoin and EtherBoyaa Interactive International Limited, a Hong Kong-based investment holding company with a track record in developing online chess, card, and puzzle games, has made a strategic move with a proposed investment in digital assets. The company’s board of directors has recently given the green light for the allocation of a substantial budget amounting to $5 million for the purpose of acquiring cryptocurrencies.Photo by Traxer on UnsplashWeb3 positioningThe Chinese company, incorporated in the Cayman Islands, announced the move as Boyaa Interactive seeks to position itself for a dynamic shift into the realm of Web3.While the exact allocation breakdown was not detailed in the disclosure, the company outlined that its primary focus would be on procuring established cryptocurrencies, specifically Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH). Boyaa Interactive intends to execute these purchases through regulated and licensed trading platforms within the upcoming year.In a letter addressed to its shareholders and potential investors, the company emphasized the strategic nature of this decision:“The purchases of cryptocurrencies are for the consideration of the Group’s future business layout into the field of Web3. The Board is of the view that the purchases of cryptocurrencies (including mainly Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH)) by the Group are in the interests of the Company and its shareholders as a whole.”A challenging recent historyThe move towards cryptocurrencies is a significant pivot for Boyaa Interactive, a company that has navigated a series of challenges in recent years. In 2018, the company’s Chairman and CEO, Zhang Wei, faced legal troubles and was sentenced to 12 months in prison for bribery, which led to his resignation from all executive and management positions.Subsequent restructuring saw Dai Zhikang stepping in as the new Chairman of the board, while Tao Ying assumed the role of an Executive Director and Chairman of the Nomination Committee.Financially, Boyaa Interactive experienced a tough period marked by revenue contraction. The company reported revenue declines over the course of 2018, largely attributed to a governmental crackdown on online poker applications and the discontinuation of poker as a recognized competitive sport. Regulatory risks stemming from the Chinese government’s stance on Texas Hold’em poker games resulted in a substantial falloff in revenue by comparison with past performance.Funds seizureThese challenges cascaded into the following year, when the company encountered a substantial freeze on its funds. In 2019, a Chinese court ordered the freezing of RMB 635 million (approximately $88.6 million) belonging to Boyaa Interactive, following the legal actions against Zhang Wei and his associated entities. One of the company’s subsidiaries, Boyaa Shenzhen, was found guilty of offering bribes. The company responded by clarifying that the frozen funds could potentially be confiscated if linked to Zhang’s misconduct. However, Boyaa Interactive also stressed that it had not been directly implicated in the case, thus mitigating the legal risks to the broader organization.Amidst these adversities, Boyaa Interactive’s decision to invest in cryptocurrencies demonstrates its openness to adapting to changing technological landscapes and exploring new opportunities in Web3.
