Gate.io Shrugs Off Withdrawal Concerns Amid Multichain Crisis

Web3 & Enterprise·June 02, 2023, 2:31 AM

Gate.io, a prominent cryptocurrency exchange, has refuted rumors circulating within the crypto community about withdrawal issues on its platform. On Wednesday, the exchange reassured users that its operations remain unaffected by recent events.

Gate.io confirms smooth operations

Gate.io is one of the oldest Chinese Bitcoin exchanges. It moved its corporate headquarters to the Cayman Islands once the Chinese authorities took a hardline stance on cryptocurrencies a few years ago. It also maintains offices in Seoul, South Korea, and is currently preparing to launch a bespoke Hong Kong-based platform.

According to the exchange, withdrawals are functioning properly, and the overall operations of the exchange are healthy. It explicitly stated, “There are no issues with our operations or withdrawals as rumored.”

Multichain concerns

Speculation emerged on social media on May 24 when Arkham Intelligence reported that members of the separate blockchain project Multichain had transferred $3 million worth of the $MULTI token to Gate.io. Arkham also mentioned other transactions involving Multichain-related tokens, some of which were subsequently suspended for deposit on the leading exchange, Binance.

While Arkham did not directly suggest any risks to Gate.io itself, the combination of market activity and other events led to rumors. ‘Coinsumption,’ a Twitter account with nearly 31,000 followers, suggested on May 31 that Gate.io might be facing insolvency problems and advised users to withdraw their funds from the exchange.

The ongoing issues with Multichain may well be unrelated to Gate.io. Multichain’s team members recently stated that they are unable to contact their CEO or access project servers. The project has experienced transaction delays over the past few days.

Native token price impact

Gate.io’s native token ($GT) has reportedly been affected by these rumors, as its value has declined by 6.59% over the past 24 hours. In contrast, Bitcoin has only experienced a 1.4% decrease.

The $GT token losses can be attributed, in part, to a period of several hours during which the token’s price dropped from $4.92 to $4.49. In isolation, this change represents an 8.7% loss, although there have been partial recoveries and other fluctuations to offset the decline. At the time of publication, the $GT token unit price stood at $4.36.

Despite the recent challenges, Gate.io continues to demonstrate significant trading volume. On the most recent day, the exchange recorded approximately $525 million in trading volume, solidifying its position as one of the largest centralized exchanges with sub-billion daily trading volumes.

The almost ten-year-old exchange is among several cryptocurrency exchanges preparing to comply with upcoming regulations in Hong Kong. It aims to operate alongside other platforms, such as CoinEx, OKX, Huobi, and BitMEX, as they adapt to the regulatory framework being implemented in the region.

Gate.io has dispelled rumors of withdrawal issues, assuring users that its operations are functioning normally. Notwithstanding that, as with everything in the crypto space, the facts and circumstances can change in an instant. Therefore, it’s a topic that is worthwhile watching as further news emerges relative to ongoing issues on the Multichain project.

Turkish lira becomes third largest fiat currency in crypto trading

The Turkish Lira (TRY) has become the third largest fiat currency by volume in the cryptocurrency market, according to a report by Kaiko. This milestone was reached as TRY's share of the crypto market hit an all-time high of 19% in early June. The increase in volume is attributed to the country's economic challenges, notably its high inflation rate, which has surpassed 70%, making the lira one of the most volatile fiat currencies globally.Photo by Afdhallul Ziqri on UnsplashFactors influencing the increaseThe shift in the Turkish lira's position in the crypto market is partly due to increased foreign exchange volatility and currency devaluation, common catalysts for cryptocurrency adoption in developing economies. Additionally, geopolitical factors such as a record number of elections and diverging monetary policies have intensified market fluctuations. This environment has favored cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, which reached new highs against the lira in recent months. For instance, Bitcoin escalated to 2.3 million TRY in March from 979,000 TRY in October 2023. The recent adjustments in cryptocurrency trading platforms, particularly Binance's delisting of certain fiat trading pairs due to banking issues, have also increased the dominance of TRY in crypto transactions. This series of events underscores the growing interconnection between traditional and digital finance markets, highlighting the increasing role of cryptocurrencies in regions facing economic instability.

NEOPIN Strengthens Japanese Market Strategy for Its Global Expansion

NEOPIN Strengthens Japanese Market Strategy for Its Global ExpansionNEOPIN, the global CeDeFi platform of South Korean investment holding company Neowiz Holdings, announced the strengthening of its strategy to enter the Japanese market as part of its global expansion plan.Photo by Aditya Anjagi on UnsplashThree key initiativesTo achieve this goal, NEOPIN has devised three key initiatives. Firstly, it will make investments in Japanese partners and provide support for their entry into other markets such as Korea, the Middle East, and Africa. Secondly, NEOPIN aims to facilitate the entry of its existing partners into Japan. Lastly, the Korean platform plans to collaborate closely with the Finschia Foundation and its members to effectively drive its expansion efforts in Japan.Web3 landscape in JapanSince the Mt. Gox incident in 2014, wherein the major Tokyo-based cryptocurrency exchange went bankrupt due to hacking attacks, Japan has responded by implementing stricter regulations. However, in recent times, the Japanese government has displayed a more positive stance towards Web3 technology, aiming to attain dominance in this sector. Illustrating this commitment, the Web3 project team, operating under the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP) Working Group for Digital Society Promotion, released the Web3 White Paper in April. The document underscores Japan’s determination to lead the global market by fostering a business-friendly environment for Web3 innovation. Moreover, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida recently delivered a keynote speech at Japan’s annual Web3 conference, WebX, reaffirming the government’s dedication to establishing a Web3-friendly ecosystem. These initiatives signal Japan’s potential to contribute to the growth of the cryptocurrency and decentralized finance (DeFi) industry.Adaptation to regulationsNEOPIN’s operator Neowiz Partners, formerly known as NEOPLY, became part of the Innovation Programme of the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with an aim to become the world’s first regulated DeFi platform. It is also working with the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) to develop a DeFi regulatory framework for the Gulf nation. In a similar vein, NEOPIN strives to respond quickly to the changing regulatory landscape in Japan to ensure the Korean CeDeFi protocol firmly establishes its presence in the Japanese market. In addition to providing direct and indirect service offerings in Japan, NEOPIN will also invest in and partner with local Web3 projects. One significant step taken by NEOPIN was its participation in IVS Crypto 2023, a high-profile Web3 startup event held in Kyoto in June. At this event, NEOPIN engaged with various Japanese businesses, initiating important connections. Since then, the Korean platform has been making progress in advancing communication and collaborations with Japanese enterprises.NEOPIN as blockchain validatorCollaboration with the Finschia Foundation will also be strengthened to achieve success in the Japanese market. In July, the blockchain mainnet Finschia launched its governance consortium and revealed its members. Within just four hours of the consortium’s launch, NEOPIN, as a governance member, received more than 1 million delegated votes, maintaining its position at the top spot in terms of voting power ever since. The Finschia mainnet was established by Line Tech Plus, a blockchain subsidiary of Tokyo-based messaging app giant Line Corporation.Serving as validators on various blockchains, including Ethereum, Tron, Cardano, and Cosmos, since 2017, NEOPIN has acquired blockchain and technical expertise. Last month, NEOPIN launched liquid staking products for ETH and KLAY, making it Korea’s first blockchain project to introduce an ETH liquid staking product. Liquid staking is a mechanism that allows users to deposit their cryptocurrencies into a staking pool, where they receive liquidity provider tokens in exchange. By holding these tokens, users can further redeposit them to earn additional yield. In light of this development, NEOPIN CEO Kim Yong-ki emphasized the CeDeFi protocol’s global expansion strategy, establishing its bases in the UAE, Japan, and Indonesia. These locations will serve as hubs for NEOPIN’s expansion efforts in the Middle East and Africa, Northeast Asia, and Southeast Asia. Kim added that NEOPIN will leverage its physical and human resources to achieve notable outcomes in the Japanese market.
