Gate.io Shrugs Off Withdrawal Concerns Amid Multichain Crisis

Web3 & Enterprise·June 02, 2023, 2:31 AM

Gate.io, a prominent cryptocurrency exchange, has refuted rumors circulating within the crypto community about withdrawal issues on its platform. On Wednesday, the exchange reassured users that its operations remain unaffected by recent events.

Gate.io confirms smooth operations

Gate.io is one of the oldest Chinese Bitcoin exchanges. It moved its corporate headquarters to the Cayman Islands once the Chinese authorities took a hardline stance on cryptocurrencies a few years ago. It also maintains offices in Seoul, South Korea, and is currently preparing to launch a bespoke Hong Kong-based platform.

According to the exchange, withdrawals are functioning properly, and the overall operations of the exchange are healthy. It explicitly stated, “There are no issues with our operations or withdrawals as rumored.”

Multichain concerns

Speculation emerged on social media on May 24 when Arkham Intelligence reported that members of the separate blockchain project Multichain had transferred $3 million worth of the $MULTI token to Gate.io. Arkham also mentioned other transactions involving Multichain-related tokens, some of which were subsequently suspended for deposit on the leading exchange, Binance.

While Arkham did not directly suggest any risks to Gate.io itself, the combination of market activity and other events led to rumors. ‘Coinsumption,’ a Twitter account with nearly 31,000 followers, suggested on May 31 that Gate.io might be facing insolvency problems and advised users to withdraw their funds from the exchange.

The ongoing issues with Multichain may well be unrelated to Gate.io. Multichain’s team members recently stated that they are unable to contact their CEO or access project servers. The project has experienced transaction delays over the past few days.

Native token price impact

Gate.io’s native token ($GT) has reportedly been affected by these rumors, as its value has declined by 6.59% over the past 24 hours. In contrast, Bitcoin has only experienced a 1.4% decrease.

The $GT token losses can be attributed, in part, to a period of several hours during which the token’s price dropped from $4.92 to $4.49. In isolation, this change represents an 8.7% loss, although there have been partial recoveries and other fluctuations to offset the decline. At the time of publication, the $GT token unit price stood at $4.36.

Despite the recent challenges, Gate.io continues to demonstrate significant trading volume. On the most recent day, the exchange recorded approximately $525 million in trading volume, solidifying its position as one of the largest centralized exchanges with sub-billion daily trading volumes.

The almost ten-year-old exchange is among several cryptocurrency exchanges preparing to comply with upcoming regulations in Hong Kong. It aims to operate alongside other platforms, such as CoinEx, OKX, Huobi, and BitMEX, as they adapt to the regulatory framework being implemented in the region.

Gate.io has dispelled rumors of withdrawal issues, assuring users that its operations are functioning normally. Notwithstanding that, as with everything in the crypto space, the facts and circumstances can change in an instant. Therefore, it’s a topic that is worthwhile watching as further news emerges relative to ongoing issues on the Multichain project.

WEMIX Foundation launches omnichain wallet

WEMIX Foundation launches omnichain walletThe WEMIX Foundation, a subsidiary of South Korean blockchain gaming publisher Wemade, has officially launched the una Wallet, according to an official announcement on the company’s website on Thursday (KST). una Wallet is a core application of the Unbound Networking & Accelerating Growth Initiative, or “unagi,” the company’s newest innovative omnichain network and interoperable Web3 gaming platform.Photo by Shubham’s Web3 on UnsplashEasy asset managementThe wallet service offers a solution for users to conveniently earn, manage and trade their digital assets like NFTs and tokens on multiple blockchains — such as WEMIX3.0, Ethereum and Polygon — in one borderless place. The WEMIX Foundation said it would add more supported chains in the future.Effortless access and robust securityIn particular, una Wallet’s convenience and security stem from an easy login procedure utilizing connections to social media accounts and multi-party computation (MPC) technology. MPC is a cryptographic security measure that enables multiple parties to assess a computation without revealing their private information or data. This technology splits private keys, or mnemonic phrases, and allows users to easily recover their wallets through social login even if they lose their keys. The service also provides transaction route recommendations, allowing users to move or trade assets across chains with minimal costs or signature procedures. Subsequently, they can also view their transaction history on each chain and the movement of assets between different chains.WEMIX plans to add various features to make authentication and asset-tracking processes even easier. una Wallet is currently available on Google Play and the Apple App Store.

Shots Fired in New OKX Ad Campaign

Shots Fired in New OKX Ad CampaignGlobal crypto spot and derivatives exchange OKX has launched a daring ad campaign that sets US-based rival exchange Coinbase firmly in its cross hairs. The formerly Chinese and now Seychelles-based exchange has pushed out a global ad campaign along the following theme: “The system doesn’t need an upgrade; it needs a rewrite.” The ads were launched on Tuesday, pointing out the ills of the traditional, centralized financial system.Photo by Merakist on UnsplashCrypto exchange rivalryThe advert doesn’t explicitly call out its rival, Coinbase. However, it is nuanced in taking a subtle dig at the US-based exchange. Exactly two months prior, on March 9, Coinbase released its own ad campaign. Coinbase claimed in its ad that “it’s time to update the system,” with OKX’s subsequent commercial having been carefully worded to poke fun at the Coinbase commercial. With a number of high profile epic failures of crypto businesses over the past twelve months, including the fall of FTX, the remaining exchanges in the business have been tripping over themselves in an effort to convince the alternative asset-investing public that theirs is the safest platform upon which they can securely trade. In its sixty second commercial, OKX poses the question “why don’t we change everything?”, set up by its claim that the conventional finance system is broken. The last of the big spendersThere’s been a notable change of strategy in the marketing activities of crypto businesses since the height of the last crypto bull run. Gone are the marketing excesses exemplified most by the now bankrupt FTX exchange.FTX demonstrated itself to be a profligate spender on all manner and means of marketing, particularly during 2021 and 2022. It paid Wall Street investor and Shark Tank star Kevin O’Leary $15 million to be a spokesperson for the company. Similar deals were struck with a range of celebrities including former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal, NFL stars such as former New England Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady, and a host of others. At the height of its marketing opulence, the fraudulently run firm signed a $135 million sponsorship deal that provided it with the naming rights to the home stadium of the NBA’s Miami Heat. 2022's Super Bowl, one of the world’s largest single marketing opportunities, saw FTX and others pay out big on advertising spend.By contrast, this year’s Super Bowl was almost a complete washout as far as crypto business participation was concerned. Meanwhile, all of the celebrities that featured in FTX’s marketing activities have found themselves the subject of multi-million dollar class action lawsuits filed by FTX creditors.A more sobering marketing strategyDespite the reputational damage that crypto has suffered due to these high profile failures, firms like OKX and Coinbase have continued to maintain a responsible level of advertising and marketing activity. That’s best exemplified by OKX’s ongoing marketing relationships with McLaren’s Formula One racing team and Manchester City Football Club. In March, US-based crypto exchange Kraken announced a marketing partnership with the Williams Formula One racing team.Crypto.com is probably the only crypto firm that spent excessively during the last bull run yet has continued to maintain a relatively high level of marketing activity. Much of that may have been due to commitments it had made during a more buoyant market. Notwithstanding that, the firm did fall foul of the UK advertising regulator, who banned its NFT promotion in December 2022.

India’s Upcoming G20 Summit Bullish for Crypto

India’s Upcoming G20 Summit Bullish for CryptoThe upcoming G20 summit in Delhi, India, will mark the first-ever G20 summit hosted in South Asia. The G20 comprises 19 countries and the European Union. While the summit is focused on discussing critical issues related to the global economy, it will also include discussions on cryptocurrencies.©Pexels/Studio Art SmileCrypto policy precursor to mass adoptionRegulations and policy frameworks around crypto will be a significant topic of conversation at the summit, alongside discussions on international financial stability. India’s Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, confirmed that G20 nations are working towards creating an effective Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for regulating crypto during the summit.India has been taking a systematic approach to regulate the evolving crypto space, as evidenced by the nation’s evolving stance on cryptocurrencies and the recently launched central bank digital currency (CBDC) pilot. With this in mind, the G20 summit in Delhi is expected to provide a platform for countries to discuss and collaborate on effective crypto regulations and policy frameworks.According to Gracy Chen, Managing Director of the Singapore-based Bitget cryptocurrency exchange, more work on policy relative to crypto in India is bullish for the development of the sector within the South Asian country. “India’s consistent growth in adapting to cryptocurrencies and forming newer policies around it has made it a hub for tech investments. With more development and a policy framework, we can expect higher mass adoption. The G20 summit will be bullish for crypto’s growth in India,” Chen told Indian weekly English-language news magazine, India Today.During the 2022 Budget discussions, the government of India proposed some significant changes to the taxation of cryptocurrencies. As a premium investment product, cryptocurrencies are known for their high volatility, and the government believed that they should be subject to a heavier tax burden. Specifically, they introduced a 30% tax on capital gains earned through the sale of digital assets, as well as a 1% tax on Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) for all crypto transactions. The tax on capital gains applies to all digital assets, and the government intends to track historical records to ensure compliance. Additionally, the 1% TDS is applied to every single transaction, regardless of its size or frequency. These changes were seen by some as a trial framework, and many in the crypto space hoped for greater leniency from the government in the future. However, it remains to be seen whether the government will revise these tax policies in the coming years.CBDC pilot projectsFurthermore, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has recently launched two CBDC pilots to test the feasibility of digital currencies in India. The first pilot is a wholesale CBDC, which is being conducted in collaboration with nine banks. The second pilot is a retail CBDC, launched in December, which is being tested in four major cities across India — Mumbai, New Delhi, Bengaluru, and Bhubaneswar. The goal of these pilots is to evaluate the potential of digital currencies in facilitating secure and efficient transactions, as well as to study the possible impact on the traditional banking system.By exploring both wholesale and retail CBDCs, the RBI is taking a comprehensive approach to CBDC development, which may inform future decisions regarding the adoption of digital currencies in India.Chen maintains that “discussions around cryptocurrency policy frameworks accelerate the possibilities of mass adoption in the region.” “With over 750 million internet users, India holds the potential to not just pilot but establish real-life crypto and blockchain use cases for the masses,” she added.
