Renault Korea Establishes Metaverse Space for Car Enthusiasts

Renault Korea Motors made an announcement on Friday that it will establish the Renault Korea Hub, an immersive automotive experience located within a metaverse, according to a report by Korean news media Dailian. The company intends to commence operations of this unique venture in the upcoming autumn season.

The Sandbox and Korean brands

The Renault Korea Hub will operate within K-verse, a designated area of Korean brands within The Sandbox, a metaverse platform based on blockchain technology.

The Sandbox metaverse has recently announced its latest Korean brand partners, and as part of this development, a land sale event is being organized where their adjacent land will be raffled off. The event is named “Hallyu Rising.” Hallyu or the Korean Wave is a cultural phenomenon that has experienced a significant surge in global popularity since the 1990s, mainly thanks to its pop songs and TV shows.

During the land sale event, users have the chance to acquire land adjacent to various prominent brands associated with Korean culture. This will be made possible through raffles and auctions facilitated by the metaverse platform. Other notable partners besides Renault Korea are Channel A, a TV broadcasting network; Netmarble, a game publisher; and CJ ENM, an entertainment company.

 

Unique experiences for car enthusiasts

The Renault Korea Hub, the first of its kind in Korea, will provide a unique space for automobile enthusiasts to indulge in a diverse array of experiences and games. As per the automaker’s announcement, visitors will have the chance to engage in activities like developing their own vehicle designs.

Visitors will have the opportunity to experience Renault Korea’s vehicles in voxel form, allowing them to explore the technology, design philosophy, and stories associated with each vehicle. A voxel can be understood as a 3D counterpart to a 2D pixel, representing a value on a regular grid in 3D space.

Renault Korea CEO Stéphane Deblaise stated that the carmaker intends to continue its pursuit of diverse Web 3.0-based activities centered around metaverses and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). He said the automaker’s projects aim to establish a connection between customers’ mobility experiences and their digital lives. Deblaise also highlighted that these projects will undergo further development through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

 

Storytelling contest

Earlier this month, Renault Korea introduced the storytelling contest titled “create your SM6,” which concludes today. This campaign inspires customers to utilize emerging AI technologies to design their own SM6 vehicles and transform them into NFTs. The SM6, Renault Korea’s midsize sedan, initially debuted in 2016 and has undergone subsequent facelifts to enhance its features and aesthetics.

The top ten performers in the storytelling contest, who create captivating renditions and stories featuring the SM6, will be rewarded with utility NFTs and KLAY, the native token of the Klaytn network. The first-place winner will receive a prize package consisting of 1 million KRW ($750) worth of KLAY, along with six SM6 NFTs.

The announcement of the winners is scheduled to take place between May 31 and June 9. Following the announcement, the airdrop of rewards will be conducted from June 30 to July 7.

To remedy this, Lee proposed that facilitating the transition for Web2 gamers to Web3 is a more sustainable method than directly targeting only Web3 users. The latter strategy is not ideal due to the fact that there aren’t many Web3 users yet in the first place, and more importantly, existing ones are not typically gamers.Balancing the shiftThe Com2uS Group has thus chosen to concentrate on Web2 while gradually transitioning to Web3. “We must remember that the transition is slow. We went through a similar process when shifting from PC to mobile gaming,” Lee cautioned.“Our company’s mission is to make people want to play games with ownership rights and make them want to own game assets.”

Russia to allow retail investors limited crypto exposure under law changes

Russia is moving to let ordinary investors gain limited exposure to cryptocurrencies under a draft law that would bring digital assets under the country’s existing financial market framework rather than treating them as a separate category of regulation.Photo by Michael Parulava on UnsplashAnnual retail crypto cap set at $3,800According to a Jan. 13 report by TASS, Anatoly Aksakov, chairman of the State Duma Committee on the Financial Market, said the changes would allow digital assets to become part of everyday life for Russian citizens, but within limits. Under the proposal, annual crypto purchases by retail investors would be capped at 300,000 rubles (roughly $3,800). Aksakov added that professional investors would face no restrictions on crypto investing, noting that digital assets are expected to play a significant role in international settlements. The shift had already been signaled in a December statement from the central bank, cited by Bloomberg. The Bank of Russia said non-qualified investors would be allowed limited access to the most liquid cryptocurrencies after passing a knowledge test. Qualified investors, meanwhile, would be able to buy digital assets without restrictions—excluding anonymous tokens—after completing a risk-awareness assessment. Under the proposals, crypto transactions would be routed through existing market infrastructure. Regulated exchanges, brokers, and trust managers would operate under their current licenses, while custodians and crypto exchange services would be subject to separate requirements. Residents would also be permitted to buy digital assets abroad and transfer their holdings through Russian intermediaries, provided such transactions are reported to tax authorities. The central bank submitted the proposals to the government as part of legislative amendments intended to regulate trading by July 1. It also warned that crypto assets remain high-risk and that investors could face losses. The move marks a notable shift in tone for the Bank of Russia, which in early 2022 pushed for strict limits on the issuance and use of digital assets, likening them to pyramid schemes. Crypto’s role in Russia’s cross-border activity has since expanded amid Western sanctions, including restrictions on access to the SWIFT messaging system imposed on Russian banks after the invasion of Ukraine. Ruble stablecoin booms amid sanctionsThat environment has helped fuel the recent rise of a ruble-backed token used in cross-border flows. A7A5, launched in Kyrgyzstan in January 2025, capitalized on this demand, processing more than $93.3 billion in transaction volume over about a year, according to Chainalysis data. Operating on the TRON and Ethereum blockchains, the token has become a major tool for Russian users navigating banking restrictions. This utility had driven daily transfer volumes past $1 billion by July, according to Elliptic. The activity has persisted despite sanctions and questions about fundamentals, even as the ruble had gained roughly 40% against the dollar by early June, based on Bank of America data cited by CNBC. CoinMarketCap data show A7A5 listed only in a USDT pair on Uniswap V2, while an August Chainalysis report found that activity is concentrated on U.S. Treasury Department Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC)-sanctioned services with Russian ties, including Meer, Bitpapa, and Grinex, a confirmed successor to Garantex. Operations on these platforms follow a strict Monday-to-Friday schedule, with volumes surging early in the week and vanishing on weekends.

LG Goes Further Down the Web3 Rabbit Hole with NFT PatentSouth Korean consumer electronics behemoth LG has delved deeper into the Web3 world, this time with a patent filing that would make NFTs more available to TV viewers.Enabling NFTs for the mass marketAccording to the filing, which was made with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the electronics giant is seeking to acquire intellectual property protection on a capability to have a smart TV connect with an NFT market server.That ability would allow the user to then send, receive and display digital artwork. Furthermore, the consumer could complete purchases using an associated digital wallet, relative to NFT-based artwork that they would have the ability to browse through on their LG smart TV.While crypto and Web3 continue to garner a lot of attention, it can still seem sometimes that it exists in a bubble all of its own. Moves like this one from an organization as professional as LG are encouraging, as they demonstrate that LG believes that NFTs are going to be a part of the future, and most importantly, that they’re going to enable mass market participation and adoption.Blade WalletThis is not LG’s first venture into the world of NFTs. Last year, the corporation launched its very own NFT marketplace. Known as “LG Art Labs”, it enables users of US LG TVs that run the WebOS 5.0 operating system, to trade digital collectibles.Earlier this year, the firm launched the Blade Wallet, a third party audited, self-custody digital wallet which runs on the Hedera public ledger. That development has come out of a partnership that LG has developed with the Hedera Hashgraph platform much earlier in 2020. Just as with the Blade Wallet, the LG Art Labs NFT marketplace also runs on Hedera. To support these early stage products, LG itself has been a node operator on the Hedera network since 2020.This recent patent filing references an NFT marketplace and a digital wallet. As we’ve established, the corporation has already launched both of them already. All of that points to the electronics giant executing on a well thought through plan which will bring NFTs to the mass market.Broader interestLG isn’t going to have it all to itself. Samsung, yet another South Korean consumer electronics giant, has also dipped its toe in the water where NFTs are concerned. In January 2022, the company released an NFT marketplace on three of its TV models. That initiative was enabled due to its partnership with leading curated NFT marketplace, Nifty Gateway.Neither will the South Koreans have the consumer electronics-enabled NFT market all to themselves. Japanese consumer electronics conglomerate Sony filed a patent in March that will allow players of Sony products to access interactive Web3 gameplay. That application will be centered upon the use of NFTs also.Sony’s attempts to delve into the Web3 arena have been more recent.
