Coinbase Effects International Expansion By Extending Singapore Offering

In further proof of Coinbase’s recently-adopted strategy of focusing on global expansion, the company has just extended the range of its product offering to Singaporean customers.

No Fees on USDC

The move was announced by way of a blog post published to the company’s website on Tuesday. The expansion entails the introduction of fee-less purchases of the USDC stablecoin for users who buy it with the Singaporean dollar (SGD). Furthermore, it is enabling Singaporean customers to earn rewards on the USDC that they hold on the platform. USDC trading pairs are being added that will allow users to trade USDC directly with over two hundred digital assets.

 

Taking staking overseas

Additionally, Coinbase Global is rolling out staking to the Singaporean market. Users will be empowered with the ability to stake the following digital assets: ETH, SOL, ADA, ATOM, and XTZ.

It’s interesting that Coinbase feels enabled in rolling out a digital asset staking service in this overseas market. In March of this year, the company received a Wells Notice — a formal notice informing the recipient that there are firm plans to bring enforcement actions against it — from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the United States. The notice was sent in relation to digital assets covered under Coinbase’s staking product offering, Coinbase Earn.

In highlighting the issue, the company bemoaned the fact that the SEC had gone down the route of issuing a Wells Notice without it expressing a single specific concern about any specific digital asset offered by the platform in advance of taking the action.

 

Global strategy

Coinbase Founder and CEO Brian Armstrong has been outspoken in criticizing the regulatory approach to crypto in the United States. He expressed that at the time of having received the Wells Notice earlier this year, and again last week, when he and key Coinbase executives visited Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

On the day of SEC Chair Gary Gensler’s appearance before the House Financial Services Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. a few weeks ago, Armstrong signaled that unless there was a more accommodating regulatory approach taken to crypto in the US, Coinbase would increasingly be looking to expand operations overseas.

A short time later, it emerged that the company had obtained a license to trade in Bermuda. At last week’s Dubai Fintech Summit, Armstrong applauded the regulatory approach taken by the UAE and indicated that the company is interested in opening a base in Abu Dhabi.

 

Positive survey results

Against this background, it’s not surprising to hear that Coinbase has expanded its service offering in Singapore, another aspiring global hub for crypto business. As part of reviewing and updating its business offering in the city state, Coinbase carried out a survey of prospective customers in Singapore. It found that 25% of Singaporeans consider crypto as the future of finance, on a par with findings in the US, and higher than the 17% reported in the UK.

Among its other findings, security concerns and price volatility of digital assets are still a barrier to entry for many. Of those who are already crypto-native, they tend to trade higher trade amounts, and with greater frequency, if from higher income backgrounds.

These accounts collectively held a substantial following, with over 8 million followers combined.The move by Weibo comes as a response to official legislation aimed at cracking down on activities that breach a range of regulations encompassing telecommunications, finance, banking, online marketing, securities, exchanges, and internet safety. The 80 influencer accounts in question had actively violated these regulations by endorsing and promoting cryptocurrencies.Ongoing enforcementThis isn’t the first time Weibo has undertaken such a measure. It has been periodically purging crypto-related accounts since China’s cryptocurrency ban took effect in September 2021. In March of this year, Weibo already took down 131 accounts associated with crypto and stock trading activities.The most significant nationwide crackdown occurred in August 2022 when the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) stepped in, resulting in the removal of a staggering 12,000 influencer accounts across both Weibo and Baidu. Furthermore, 51,000 promotional posts related to cryptocurrencies were deleted. The CAC justified these actions by emphasizing their intent to protect the public’s property safety, educate citizens on responsible investment practices, and discourage participation in speculative cryptocurrency trading activities.Weibo echoed similar sentiments in their previous enforcement actions, vowing to increase the crackdown on illegal securities activities on their platform while strictly adhering to legal regulations.Worldwide issueCrypto promotion and crypto influencers are coming under increased scrutiny worldwide. In a recent filing by the Department of Justice (DoJ) in the United States in its criminal prosecution against Sam Bankman-Fried, the Founder and former CEO of failed crypto exchange FTX, it asserted that promotion by way of ads featuring US comedian Larry David and American sports star Tom Brady had blurred the lines between FTXs international and US businesses.Class action lawsuits have been instigated against a long list of crypto influencers and promoters relative to FTX, Celsius, BlockFi, and a number of other high-profile failed crypto platforms.Last month, details emerged of a grizzly end for Argentinian crypto influencer Fernando Perez Algaba, whose dismembered body was found in a suitcase in a town close to the Argentinian capital, Buenos Aires.China’s intensified scrutiny over crypto activities in recent years is driven by multiple factors, including concerns about capital flight, money laundering, and the imperative to safeguard state-controlled cryptocurrency initiatives. These measures have not only affected domestic investors but have also had unintended consequences for international cryptocurrency enthusiasts.

OKX expands McLaren F1 sponsorship deal

Going beyond a mere branding endeavor, the sponsorship initiative has been put together in an effort to energize the blockchain-centric world of F1, enhancing track-side aesthetics and elevating the visibility of the Web3 company. ‘Stealth Mode’The collaboration will see OKX's branding appear on various elements of McLaren cars, from side pods and rear wings to mirrors, drivers' helmets and team apparel. OKX's logo will be prominently featured during 20 out of the 24 races in the upcoming F1 season. The primary 2024 livery of the vehicle draws inspiration from the OKX-McLaren "Stealth Mode" design showcased during the Singapore and Japan Grand Prix races in 2023. According to Haider Rafique, the Chief Marketing Officer at OKX, the decision to expand the sponsorship deal with McLaren aligns with the increased brand awareness achieved through their partnership. Building upon existing sponsorship dealThe collaboration between McLaren and OKX isn't new. OKX's initial partnership with McLaren commenced in May 2022 as a primary partner to its F1 team and laid the foundation for this continued collaboration. The crypto platform’s livery featured on McLaren MCL60 F1 cars at the Singapore and Japan Grand Prix races in 2023.  Surveys conducted post-event revealed that 80% of attendees expressed interest in learning more about the exchange, indicating a curiosity within McLaren's fan base about Web3 and digital finance. This resonance with the audience aligns with OKX's mission to make the crypto economy accessible to everyone and educate the public about the benefits and opportunities within this space. Looking ahead, Rafique expresses OKX's intent to pursue a long-term partnership with McLaren, emphasizing the value derived from longevity and growth over time. He envisions the McLaren-OKX partnership as potentially spanning decades, fostering generational associations akin to his own fondness for Ayrton Senna and McLaren from his youth. Broader crypto sector marketingThe broader trend of the cryptocurrency sector's increased involvement in F1 is evident, with partnerships like Crypto.com creating NFTs for every lap and Kraken's marketing collaboration with the Williams Formula One racing team. Earlier this month, crypto gambling platform Stake signed a sponsorship deal with the Sauber F1 team. Crypto.com has been a prominent sponsor of Formula 1 since 2021, showcasing its logo at Grand Prix circuits globally and sponsoring the Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant F1 team. The other high profile sports sponsorship forum for crypto businesses appears to be the English Premier League (EPL). In this arena too, OKX has been active, having an ongoing deal in place with Manchester City which it strengthened last year. Singapore-based crypto trading platform BingX recently followed suit, securing a sponsorship deal with Chelsea Football Club.

Indian Web3 industry body campaigned for ‘level playing field’

An industry advocacy body for crypto and Web3 in India had urged the Indian government to take action against nine offshore exchanges, prompting the government to issue show cause notices and block URLs recently. Native industry pushbackAccording to CoinDesk, the publication has seen a copy of a letter that was sent in mid-December by the Bharat Web3 Association (BWA), addressed to the Indian Finance Ministry’s Department of Revenue Secretary, Sanjay Malhotra. The letter was penned by BWA Chairman Dilip Chenoy. Chenoy has been in the role since March of last year having a number of years of leadership experience within Indian industry bodies under his belt, with time spent previously as Secretary General of the Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry and as Chairman of the board of Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology. According to its LinkedIn profile, the BWA seeks to “advocate for the collaboration between the regulatory bodies and the Industry for creating awareness about the new age technology and the emerging [Web3/crypto] asset class.” ‘Show cause’ noticesIt emerged last week that India’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) had issued “compliance show-cause” notices to a number of overseas crypto platforms who have otherwise been active within the Indian market. The FIU is a national body tasked with liaising with and providing information to enforcement agencies where suspected illicit transactions are concerned. The offshore exchanges, including Binance, KuCoin, Huobi, Kraken, Gate.io, Bittrex, Bitstamp, MEXC Global and Bitfinex, have been given a two-week deadline to respond to the show cause notice. This notice questions why regulatory actions should not be taken against them, aiming to ensure compliance with the country's financial regulations. It’s understood that the BWA's letter requested a one-month grace period for offshore exchanges to register with the FIU. It remains unclear whether the government's actions were solely prompted by the BWA's letter or if it would have taken place independently. Notably, the BWA's letter aligns with the government's earlier mandate in March, requiring crypto businesses to register with the FIU and adhere to anti-money laundering processes under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Since then, 31 domestic entities have registered with the FIU. Photo by Peter Glaser on UnsplashEnsuring a fair gameThe BWA's letter also proposes that offshore exchanges establish an Indian subsidiary, deposit the applicable tax deducted at source (TDS) from July 1, 2022 and face restrictions, including potential access blocks on mobile app stores and IP addresses, for non-compliance. While it's unclear if all these requests feature in the show cause notices, the BWA emphasizes the need for fair competition. Rajagopal Menon, Vice President of leading Indian crypto exchange WazirX, stressed that “all we are asking for is a level playing field." The BWA's letter also urges the government to grant Indian retailers a 30-day window to withdraw assets before implementing any restrictions. The fledgling BWA industry body recently celebrated its first anniversary with its founding member, CoinSwitch founder Ashish Singhal, stating that he got involved with the BWA “to help build an effective regulatory framework for Web3 and digital assets in India.” Singhal added that the BWA’s mission is “to help India realize its vision to be the leading digital economy.”
