Four Pillars for Success in Korean Security Token Market

On Wednesday, blockchain experts in various fields gathered at the 2023 Blockchain Meetup Conference held in Seoul to discuss issues with security tokens and their outlook.

What attracted security token businesses’ attention at the meeting was a presentation by Jung Eui-heon from Lambda256, a subsidiary of Korean crypto exchange Upbit’s operator Dunamu. He shared four pillars for success in the Korean security token market.

 

Security tokens gaining traction in Korea

Security tokens have been a trending topic in the Korean blockchain industry since the Korean Financial Services Commission (FSC) allowed the issuance and trading of security tokens last February. Furthermore, a 2022 report jointly published by Boston Consulting Group and Singaporean investment platform ADDX predicted that the total size of illiquid tokenized assets worldwide would reach $16 trillion by 2030.

Against this backdrop, here are the four keys to successful security token projects that Jung outlined.

 

Technology adaptation

First, he emphasized the importance of adopting rapidly changing technology. To tackle the issue, he suggested teaming up with advanced tech companies for long-term collaboration. When choosing tech partners, companies should ensure they are sustainable, possess technological prowess, hold credibility on high volume transactions, and maintain the security level of financial institutions, Jung advised.

 

Forging partnerships

The second point he mentioned was the need to forge partnerships. The FSC’s February guideline requires the issuance and distribution of security tokens to be managed separately. This means that security token projects require collaboration between issuers, distributors, account managers, asset holders, and tech companies.

 

New securities products

Jung also noted that discovering new securities products is crucial. Partnering with existing fractional investing companies may help accelerate the security token project initially, but in the long run, enterprises will eventually have to create products in various fields such as gaming, movies, and entertainment.

 

Token liquidity

Lastly, Jung underlined the token liquidity, which plays a crucial role in determining its prices. Issuers will need to find various distributors and vice versa. Securing liquidity requires the establishment of a technical standard that improves interoperability and compatibility, he highlighted.

He made these comments in response to the emergence of information earlier this week that raised questions about internal trading practices at Crypto.com, a Singapore-based exchange.BitMEX, once the world’s largest crypto derivatives exchange, also used to employ internal traders who acted as market makers. However, Lutz explained that BitMEX’s internal trading team, named Arrakis Capital, now functions primarily as a “treasury desk.” He sees this transition as a natural evolution for crypto exchanges in a market that has matured and attracted more institutional liquidity providers.Arrakis Capital currently performs limited functions, including converting commission fees earned in Bitcoin into fiat currency for operational purposes, hedging BitMEX’s exposure to tokens held as inventory, and making markets for BitMEX’s token $BMEX. Lutz clarified that Arrakis’s market-making activities are limited because external market makers find the token’s liquidity insufficient.Regarding profitability, Lutz stated that Arrakis earns “very minor returns” of up to $100,000 per month from holding T-Bills, but it incurred losses last year. He noted that Arrakis used to play a more significant market-making role when BitMEX dominated the crypto futures market. However, he assured that the trading desk was always segregated, despite accusations in the past.Fee structuresLutz acknowledged that exchanges with internal trading teams have faced increased scrutiny since the controversies surrounding Alameda Research and FTX. To differentiate between benign internal trading teams and hedge fund-like operations, Lutz highlighted several factors, including the separation of client funds and house funds, access to sensitive data, and the ability to move markets on their own exchange. Fee structures also play a role, with low or no transaction fees potentially signaling a market-making motive rather than serving as a counterparty.Lutz’s perspective suggests that crypto exchanges should rely on external liquidity providers and HFTs rather than maintaining internal market-making teams. He argues that the market has evolved. At this point he feels that these teams are no longer necessary, due to the presence of established players within the digital assets space.As regulatory scrutiny grows, ensuring transparency and avoiding conflicts of interest become crucial for maintaining trust within the crypto exchange ecosystem. The digital assets industry is far from arriving at a mature stage in its development. While many in the industry have found the stance taken by regulators to be unhelpful, the industry itself must also demonstrate its ability to iteratively move towards best practice, without that being a knee-jerk response to regulatory enforcement.

NBC and AliPay collaborate to enable enhanced cross-border paymentsThe National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) and Ant Group, the parent company of AliPay+, the borderless payment and marketing solutions provider for merchants, have inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on “Cross-Border QR Code Payment Cooperation.”The deal was announced at last week’s Singapore FinTech Festival. The collaboration aims to boost the use of KHQR codes through Alipay+. KHQR codes provide for a standardization of QR codes which have been created for retail transfers and payments within Cambodia.Chea Serey, the Governor of NBC, and Douglas Feagin, Senior Vice President of Ant Group, formally signed the MOU to facilitate efficient and secure cross-border QR code payment transactions. Japanese fintech developer Soramitsu has collaborated with the Cambodian authorities in developing it.This latest development unfolded as Chea Serey took the stage as a keynote speaker at the Singapore Fintech Festival, addressing the theme, “The Intersection of Policy, Finance, and Technology.”According to a statement from Chea Serey’s official Facebook account, this collaboration opens doors for Cambodia Bakong users to access Alipay+ and engage with over 83 million merchants worldwide. Additionally, it allows international tourists to seamlessly make payments to KHQR merchants in Cambodia. Serey stated:“Today I am glad to announce the MoU signing between Alipay Plus and NBC, hence I encourage local banks to inform their merchants to open KHR accounts and start accepting KHR payments otherwise they won’t be able to benefit from this arrangement.”Greater interoperabilitySerey highlighted that this collaboration marks a significant step in enhancing Cambodia’s payment connectivity on a global scale, creating a more convenient and inclusive experience for tourists and contributing to the growth of the national economy.In an interview with CNBC at last week’s event, Serey said that the initiative will enable greater interoperability. In China, Cambodian merchants and visitors can use the Cambodian payment system to make payments to Chinese vendors. Likewise, Chinese visitors can use Alipay+, a platform they are familiar with, to make payments for goods and services in Cambodia. Serey believes this to be important, given that Cambodia depends heavily on tourism.The Alipay+ platform facilitates payments through various digital wallets, including Korea’s KakaoPay, Malaysia’s TouchnGo, Thailand’s TrueMoney and the Philippines’ GCash. Ant Group has been attempting to extend the regional utility of its payment system for some time.As far back as 2017, Ant Group signed an MOU with British bank Standard Chartered with a view towards increasing financial services access to clients located along China’s “Belt and Road” initiative route. In 2019, Alipay inked a deal with Cambodia’s DaraPay to allow Alipay wallet holders to pay for goods and services at DaraPay POS terminal points.Alipay and WeChat Pay are recognized as two of the most preferred payment methods among Chinese consumers. Together, they dominate the Chinese mobile payments landscape, boasting a market share of over 92 percent and a user base exceeding 2 billion.
