Four Pillars for Success in Korean Security Token Market

On Wednesday, blockchain experts in various fields gathered at the 2023 Blockchain Meetup Conference held in Seoul to discuss issues with security tokens and their outlook.

What attracted security token businesses’ attention at the meeting was a presentation by Jung Eui-heon from Lambda256, a subsidiary of Korean crypto exchange Upbit’s operator Dunamu. He shared four pillars for success in the Korean security token market.

 

Security tokens gaining traction in Korea

Security tokens have been a trending topic in the Korean blockchain industry since the Korean Financial Services Commission (FSC) allowed the issuance and trading of security tokens last February. Furthermore, a 2022 report jointly published by Boston Consulting Group and Singaporean investment platform ADDX predicted that the total size of illiquid tokenized assets worldwide would reach $16 trillion by 2030.

Against this backdrop, here are the four keys to successful security token projects that Jung outlined.

 

Technology adaptation

First, he emphasized the importance of adopting rapidly changing technology. To tackle the issue, he suggested teaming up with advanced tech companies for long-term collaboration. When choosing tech partners, companies should ensure they are sustainable, possess technological prowess, hold credibility on high volume transactions, and maintain the security level of financial institutions, Jung advised.

 

Forging partnerships

The second point he mentioned was the need to forge partnerships. The FSC’s February guideline requires the issuance and distribution of security tokens to be managed separately. This means that security token projects require collaboration between issuers, distributors, account managers, asset holders, and tech companies.

 

New securities products

Jung also noted that discovering new securities products is crucial. Partnering with existing fractional investing companies may help accelerate the security token project initially, but in the long run, enterprises will eventually have to create products in various fields such as gaming, movies, and entertainment.

 

Token liquidity

Lastly, Jung underlined the token liquidity, which plays a crucial role in determining its prices. Issuers will need to find various distributors and vice versa. Securing liquidity requires the establishment of a technical standard that improves interoperability and compatibility, he highlighted.

The project consists of four editions of NFT mintings, each with a different concept promoting mindful consumerism. 3,000 NFTs each were minted for the first two editions back in December and June, and KT is gearing up to release the third edition soon, according to industry reports on Sunday (local time). A portion of the proceeds from the upcoming third edition sale will also be donated under the project’s name. Notably, all 3,000 NFTs from the first edition were sold out in just a minute.KT has designed the NFT purchase system to encourage ESG-related activities. Buyers can receive items that reflect ESG values, such as bags from The Fair Story, a company that promotes fair trade products made by brands from developing countries. “We will continue to work with companies related to our ESG values to develop household products, miscellaneous goods, and more that are linked to NFTs,” KT said.LG Uplus and SKT’s ESG-led collaborationsLG Uplus and SKT have followed suit by incorporating eco-friendly themes into their own blockchain technologies. In particular, SKT recently signed a business agreement with WinCL, a carbon credit marketplace encouraging carbon offset efforts. The deal aims to combine SKT’s NFT marketplace, TopPort, and WinCL’s carbon credit system to issue NFTs for companies that need help managing their ESG performance indicators.On October 18, LG Uplus announced that a select number of holders of its Moono Crew NFT will be the first to purchase NFTs from the Incheon Heroes NFT collection — a collection launched on the Klaytn Mainnet as part of Incheon City’s Incheon Universe Project, aimed at introducing Incheon’s natural, cultural, historical, and technological heritage, and motivating participation in eco-friendly activities from younger generations. The company had collaborated with Incheon and Lotte Home Shopping to promote and expand the ecosystem of the collection.

Kbank’s Upbit Customer Deposits Total $2.2BKbank, an internet-only bank in South Korea, is facing criticism due to its relatively high proportion of cryptocurrency customer deposits compared to other banks. Kbank reportedly manages approximately KRW 3 trillion (equivalent to $2.2 billion) in deposits from customers of cryptocurrency exchange Upbit, which accounts for about 18% of its total customer deposits.This percentage stands out, being notably higher than other banks that provide accounts to the other four crypto-to-fiat exchanges in Korea. That is according to a report by Maeil Business Newspaper, which obtained documents submitted to lawmaker Kim Hee-gon by the Financial Services Commission (FSC).According to Korean law, crypto exchanges must secure real-name bank accounts from banks to offer crypto trading services against the Korean won. Kbank offers its accounts to Upbit, the dominant player in the Korean crypto market.Photo by David McBee on PexelsNotable exposure to crypto exchangeThe FSC documents showed that Kbank’s Upbit customer deposits totaled KRW 3.09 trillion, making up 18% of its total deposits, which amount to KRW 17.2 trillion.In a striking contrast, Nonghyup Bank had 0.2% of its deposits, equivalent to KRW 557.8 billion, in Bithumb, which is the nation’s second-largest cryptocurrency exchange. Kakaobank, another internet-only bank, had 0.3% (KRW 112.2 billion) of its deposits in Coinone. Shinhan Bank held 0.01% (KRW 43 billion) in Korbit, and Jeonbuk Bank had a similarly small 0.02% (KRW 4.2 billion) in Gopax.Lawmaker Kim pointed out that Kbank has become a bank dedicated to crypto trading. Kim proposed that financial authorities take proactive measures to assess the potential risks that may emerge when Kbank utilizes Upbit customer deposits as a basis for offering credit loans. Such risky financial practices could potentially result in higher loan defaults and the emergence of a greater number of individuals with poor credit histories, which could ultimately jeopardize the stability of the financial market.Regulatory gapThe current Financial Transaction Reporting Act mandates that virtual asset service providers (VASPs) segregate customer deposits from their own assets as a measure to combat money laundering. However, it has been noted that there are regulatory gaps stemming from the absence of specific guidelines for the custody of these deposits.According to the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), Nonghyup and Kakaobank store deposits in separate accounts within the bank. On the other hand, Kbank and Jeonbuk Bank keep deposits in corporate accounts under their respective exchange partners’ names.When deposits are stored in separate accounts within the bank, only the bank has access to those funds, and they are essentially operated in a manner similar to a trust, preventing the bank from using the funds arbitrarily. In contrast, funds held in corporate accounts can be used by the bank as a source for lending. Lawmaker Kim warned that in scenarios such as exchange bankruptcies or similar situations, banks holding customer funds in corporate accounts could face difficulties in ensuring customer protection.Each of these banks receives reserve funds from crypto exchanges in anticipation of potential compensation requirements in the event of unforeseen losses. The FSS states that as of the end of last month, the reserve amounts held by each bank were as follows: Kbank had KRW 200 billion, Nonghyup Bank had KRW 100 billion, Kakao Bank had KRW 73 billion, and both Shinhan Bank and Jeonbuk Bank had KRW 30 billion.Kbank’s Upbit customer deposits are approximately 72 times larger than Shinhan Bank’s Korbit customer deposits. However, the reserve amounts held by Kbank are only 6.7 times greater than those held by Shinhan. Lawmaker Kim emphasized the importance of banks maintaining reserve funds that are proportional to the customer deposits held in their partner crypto exchanges.Signs of recoveryMeanwhile, the Korean cryptocurrency industry, which faced a downturn in the latter half of last year due to events like the Terra collapse and FTX’s bankruptcy, has exhibited signs of recovery in the first half of this year.The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of the FSC recently reported that the cryptocurrency market cap in South Korea has reached KRW 28.4 trillion as of the end of June this year. This reflects a 46% increase compared to the end of last year when it stood at KRW 19.4 trillion. Additionally, the total operating profit of domestic exchanges surged by 82% to KRW 227.3 billion over the past six months, compared to the previous figure of KRW 124.9 billion.The total market’s max drawdown (MDD) was 62%. MDD assesses the extent to which an asset has declined in value from its highest point to its lowest point within a specific time frame, before experiencing a recovery. The FIU considers this MDD to be high, urging investor caution.

Huobi Rebrands as HTX to Mark Tenth AnniversaryIn a move marking its 10th anniversary, Seychelles-registered cryptocurrency exchange Huobi has decided to rebrand itself as “HTX.”Rebranding confusionIn crypto-centric discussions on social media, the decision has sparked controversy and raised eyebrows, drawing comparisons to the now-defunct exchange FTX.The announcement of Huobi’s rebranding to HTX was made on Wednesday. According to the company, the new name is a combination of symbolic elements. The “H” represents the first letter of “Huobi,” the “T” is a nod to Justin Sun’s blockchain project Tron, and the “X” stands for the exchange itself.Alternatively, some interpret “HT” as a reference to the exchange’s native Huobi Token (HT), while the “X” symbolizes the Roman numeral for 10, commemorating the company’s 10th anniversary. Huobi’s new slogan accompanying the rebranding is “HTX, Just Trade It.”Before the official announcement, Huobi changed its social media account names to align with the new brand. In one of a range of similar comments, a user lined up the Huobi logo next to that of FTX and wrote: “I think I’ve seen this movie before.” Although a matter of speculation, there has been some chatter on social media in recent weeks, questioning the health of the Huobi business. It didn’t help the firm that in August, rumors swirled that some of the company’s executives were subject to an investigation by Chinese authorities.This isn’t the first time a crypto-related entity has seemingly borrowed part of its name from FTX. In January, the founders of the collapsed cryptocurrency hedge fund Three Arrows Capital announced plans to raise $25 million for a proposed crypto exchange called “GTX.” Huobi’s rebrand has amused some FTX creditors who had faced criticism from some in the crypto sector for wanting to resurrect the business while maintaining the same branding.In early August, Huobi refuted reports suggesting insolvency and the arrest of senior executives by Chinese authorities. Additionally, the exchange had previously been ordered to cease operations in Malaysia following regulatory actions by the country’s securities regulator in May.International marketing effortHuobi’s rebranding to HTX has undoubtedly stirred debate and curiosity within the cryptocurrency community. Justin Sun, an advisor to the project, stated at a media briefing at Token 2049 in Singapore that the HTX brand will be marketed towards Huobi’s international English-speaking users.Sun said: “It’s very hard for foreigners, Westerners, to pronounce ‘Huobi’… It doesn’t make any sense to them,” Sun said, explaining that the word Huobi means fire and coin in Chinese. “That’s why we rebranded as HTX for international branding.”As the crypto industry continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how this new identity will impact Huobi’s reputation and standing in the market. Regardless, the crypto world is known for its surprises, and Huobi’s marketing move serves as a reminder that the industry is in constant flux, filled with unexpected developments.
